David’s Page
Welcome everyone to 2015
Another year has gone by and last year was as busy as ever. This is our 22nd year as the HPMG.
Our retired police motorcycles have been seen up and down the country, from the Stafford Bike
Shows down to Mount Brown, Surrey Police. On the back page you will find a full list of events and
shows of which many are organised by the Emergency Services. There is still time to enter into large
shows such as the Emergency Services Day in May at the Brooklands Museum which feels like
stepping back in time. We shall also be at the Southern Classic Bike show in May, please come and
see us. Hampshire Police are holding their annual Families Open Day in June and I urge to please
bring along your bikes. It’s always been a good show for us. Although we are a still a very small group,
it would be nice to see a lot more of you coming to some of the events to show off your exceptional
and rare police motorcycles. Please see our full events diary on the back page for 2015.
Hope to see you at the events throughout the year - Remember, Enjoy Yourselves.

From the Archive - City of London Police
The picture above was kindly supplied by Bob Hennessy and shows him riding his
ex City of London Police BMW R60/6 from 1976 taking part in the Lord Mayor’s Parade
in 2014. The Force was celebrating their 175th anniversary.
So, in honour of their anniversary, the pictures on the next page show motorcycles
from the 1940’s to the present day that were in use within the City of London.
The front cover picture is a Triumph 650 outside St Paul’s Cathedral.

Emergency Services Day - Aldingbourne Trust 13th April 2014
We were invited down to the Aldingbourne Country Centre to put on a display together with Ken’s Ambulance,
the local Fire Brigade and Sussex Police. The Centre is dedicated to helping local businesses, communities and
people with learning disabilities to reach their potential and enjoy life. Weather was great and we had a very
enjoyable day, it’s great to let the kid’s sit on the motorbikes and the police car, smiles all round.

Brooklands Emergency Services Show - 5th May 2014
Once again, we went to the Brooklands Museum in Surrey for their annual Emergency Service Day. Slightly
overcast but pleasant. We had seven motorcycles on the display including Terry’s Kawasaki KZ1000P in
gleaming chrome, Nick’s Honda CD250 (ex Hampshire Police) and Andy’s BMW K1200RSP. PC-UK also turned
with their collection Police cars, the Metropolitan Police brought their museum collection and the America
Car Owners put on a large and colourful display. All the Emergency Services of every kind were represented
on site. We were asked to put on a small display in the arena and there is a video of us at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx36XNTmiyc.
We first came to this show way back in 1998 when they had a small show, my how it’s grown over the
years. The Brooklands Museum is a fantastic venue with events all year round.

Southern Classic Bike Show, Kempton Park - 24th May 2014
Eric Patterson invited us over to the Southern Classic Bike Show at Kempton Park Racecourse. We put on
our usual display of police bikes and pictures. Dick kindly supplied his Metropolitan Police LE Velocette, Terry
his Honda CBX750P Gifo Police, Japan and Nick his Hampshire Police CD250. All around us were club stands
with brilliant displays of old and some new bikes. Terry’s luck is still good because he won yet anther prize for
his Honda CBX750. This show is highly recommended because besides the club stands, it also hosts a very
large auto-jumble outside.

Chiltern Open Air Museum Transport Show - 20th July 2014
Chiltern Open Air Museum had their annual Transport Show on their grounds and we attended with our
colourful collection of bikes and pictures. Beside us were a large contingent of old motorcycles from various
clubs. In the field opposite were the car displays and by the village green, the Veteran Cycle Club in their
period costumes. The highlight of the day has to be the flyover of the last surviving UK Lancaster bomber,
fantastic. Has to be my favourite aircraft of all time. The event is on this year and if you fancy a nice quiet lazy
day in the country, see the events list on the back page.

Transportfest - 19th October 2014
In October, the London Bus Museum located at Brooklands had their annual Transportfest. David very
kindly helped with the transportation of the bikes down to the museum. We were joined by the London
Ambulance Service who brought their preserved vehicles for display together with some members of the Fire
Preservation Society. As always, there were lot’s of old buses and coaches all over the museum site. Another
great show and so much to see. If you are interested in showing of your motorcycle, the event is on again this
year. Please see events page for details.

Retired Police Motorcycle - Kawasaki Z200
The Z200 was built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in the 1970’s and just like the Honda CB200 of the
same period, it proved very popular with rural British police forces, an ideal bike for local policing.
Model shown in the pictures was originally owned by Kent County Constabulary and was part of a
fleet on 94. They were replacements in 1981 for their aging Honda CB200s’ and were the last small
motorcycle to be used by the force. In 1983, they were replaced with the arrival of Ford Fiesta vans.

Retired Police Motorcycle - Honda CB200
Honda produced the CB200 in the mid 1970’s based on the old CB175. It proved very popular
with regional forces in the UK such as Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The perfect little machine
for rural work, it was reliable and economical to run. It was also used for training new riders before
they advanced onto the larger machines.
The CB200 shown on this page has been restored to it’s police livery. It was registered to Kent
Constabulary in July 1976 and was one of 142 CB200s’ on the fleet, replacing their ageing LE
Velocettes’. They were the first Japanese bikes to be used by the force.
