A Message from Mayor Tammy
Sincerely, Mayor Tammy
• Are you looking for a way to impact others your age in Meridian?
• Do you possess leadership skills?
Then come join the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council!
The council is made up of students who live in Meridian, are ages
14 to 18, and attend Meridian schools. They meet twice a month during the
school year at Meridian’s City Hall to discuss issues that affect youth.

Spring & Summer Activity Guide 2013
Saturday, April 13, 2013 In Meridian, we are lucky to have many members of our community who generously
donate countless hours towards programs, projects, and events that benefit us all. Our
volunteers are a great example of our community as a whole; a caring community who
give their time and talents to so many great causes. Volunteers provide a broad source of expertise and manpower for City programs.
In addition to what they give, they gain new skills, meet new people, develop greater
knowledge and understanding of city government, help address community issues, and
gain personal satisfaction – all while making a difference here in Meridian.
Annually, citizens donate more than 20,000 volunteer hours to the City of Meridian. Having
volunteers involved in many projects saves taxpayers countless dollars and helps the City
responsibly utilize its resources.
Continuing in that tradition, the Meridian Police Department is launching a new Park
Volunteer Program for Kleiner Park. This program will train citizen volunteers to be the
“eyes and ears” of law enforcement within the park and to answer questions park visitors
Mayor of Meridian
might have regarding the park’s amenities and the broader community. If you are interested
Tammy de Weerd
in the Park Volunteer Program or any volunteer opportunity with the City, please email
volunteer coordinator Barb Hatch at [email protected] or call her at 846-7340.
Everyone has a talent and we know there are many needs to be met and opportunities for involvement in our community. If
you have time you want to share, we’d be happy to help find the right opportunity for you! Please accept my heartfelt thanks
to all of our current and past volunteers - you make a huge impact on Meridian and we are so grateful for your service.

from many familiar artistic masters, all the while exploring different
media. We will create a large scene reminiscent to Roy Lichtenstein’s
“Still Life with Figurine” from 1974. We will explore the many ways
to illustrate shadow and light using techniques that Lichtenstein used.
On Day 2, we become caricaturists and create unique cartoons of
many famous artists. The final day allows us to explore pastels chalks
as we learn about Paul Cezanne and his mastery of light and color. We

Ages 6-12
We can’t wait to take a tour of Australia. This three-day workshop will
provide us plenty of opportunity to try different techniques and media
all in the hopes of challenging our artistic skills. Day 1 highlights the
Australian Opera House and its unique shell shaped design. We will
create a graphic version of this remarkable structure for a dramatic
representation. Day 2 will take us Down Under as we explore
cartooning with Australian-related jokes and scenes. Day 3 will finish
off this workshop with a powerful pastel drawing of a furry koala bear. Pastels are a unique medium and allow us the opportunity to practice
some truly sophisticated techniques. We will walk away with several
Australian-themed drawings to impress everyone. No experience
necessary. Please wear an old shirt or smock on the last day. Classes
are located at the Meridian Community Center. Min: 3/Max: 12.
Grab your passport and join us for three days of adventurous fun as
we explore many “locations” and experience a new medium; pastels.

different artists. Each day, we will create a large, original pastel
drawing replicating a famous artist’s masterpiece. We will draw a
colorful goldfish bowl as Henri Matisse did in his “Goldfish” painting. On Day 2, we will recreate Vincent Van Gogh’s famous “Starry Night”
complete with swirls throughout the sky. On our final day, we will
create powerful still life full of robust color as Paul Cezanne did often
in his paintings. Each day will challenge us with the pastel media. But
in the end we will be Masters ourselves. You will want the drawings
