The Distributor - Illinois Region
The Distributor August 2016 Director’s Corner August 2016 This weekend was the Illinois Region annual picnic. Running the event were Val and Dan Koepke, who kept everything running like clockwork. It was hosted by John and Marilyn Krenger. They opened up their picturesque property to our club again this year, and I am thrilled to say that it won’t be the last! John Murphy was the hit of the picnic with his Model A trailer with ice cream cart. Even though John agreed to a price for the ice cream prior to the picnic, when I called him on Monday to arrange payment, he said to consider it a donation! What a wonderful, unexpected surprise! Thank you, John! I want to thank everyone who jumped in to help with setup, food, and clean up; Sharon Hendricks, Marilyn Krenger, Sue Holmes, Deb Sarasin, Paulette Halvorsen, Mike Kochevar, Jerry & Camille Tiesch, Mike Goode, and Ron & Ken Ehrenhofer. Thank you to Roger Halvorsen and his crew for the fun car games and to Carl Hagland for the fabulous trophies that everyone loves. And of course, a huge thank you to my daughter Amy, who, along with her helpers John and Luke, ran some very creative kids games complete with prizes and trophies. Thank you to my husband, John, for making Bozo buckets for the kids (Model A style of course), and his spark plug event, which was a hit again this year. I know that the picnic takes an army of volunteers, but it is one of our best events because we have so many wonderful members! Looking forward, we have a cruise night in Park Ridge on Friday, August 5th. The board of directors meeting will be held on August 9th. On August 10th, we have a cruise night in Mundelein, with the featured car being the Model a Ford. On August 27th, we have the Model A and T swap meet in Woodstock. Please see Ken Ehrenhofer or Mark Maron for details. I hope that everyone has the chance to get on the road with your Model A and enjoy the summer! -Christine “What’s right about America is that although we have a mess of problems, we have great capacity-intellect and resourcesto do something about them” -Henry Ford 2016 Officers and Staff Director: Assistant Director: Treasurer: Secretary: Editor: Regional Correspondent Activities Chairmen: Christine Rozney (847) 421-9895 [email protected] Steve Sarasin (847) 826-0992 Don Mormon (847) 825-5046 Susan Holmes (847) 977-1381 Michael Goode (773) 407-1884 [email protected] Melinda Pritchett (630) 842-7065 Roger Halvorsen (847) 566-2846 Vince Scalbrino (847) 934-8167 Club Sales: Bob Friskies (847) 788-9272 Distributor Staff: Jim Dodaro (847) 398-1957 Membership Chairman: Mike Kochevar (847) 827-1555 Announcements: Susan Szymanski (847) 455-8815 Pay Car Show Chairperson: John Drenenberg (847) 272-7192 New Member Coordinator: Dan Pritchett (847) 980-5076 Official Greeter Dan Pritchett (847) 980-5076 MAFFI Liaison Mark Maron (847) 302-7900 Web Master: Mark Maron (847) 302-7900 Official Photographer: Mike Giamari (773) 631-3903 Property Chairman: Ken Ehrenhofer (815) 337-4656 Raffle Coorinator: Jerry Tiesch (773) 405-5613 Technical Coordinator: Ron Ehrenhofer(815) 337-4656 Winter Swap Committee:Mark Maron (847) 302-7900 Val Maron (847) 951-585 Ron Ehrenhofer(847) 255-6758 Larry Rust (847) 913-9233 Mike Sargis (773) 507-5144 Refreshments: Amy and John Rozny (847) 823-7919 Youth Coordinator Amy Rozny (847) 823-7919 Restoration Technical Advisors Judging Standards: Ron Ehrenhofer (815) 337-4656 Ken Ehrenhofer (847) 255-6758 Era Accessories Vince Scalabrino (847) 934-8167 License Plates/Tags Frank Smith (847) 942-0905 Fashion Marilyn Krenger (815) 338-4008 Electrical Marty Brown (847) 673-1157 www.illinoisregion.com Illinois Region – Business Meeting Meeting was called to order at 7:36pm by Christine Rozny, who welcomed everyone. Motion made and seconded to approve the May Business Meeting Minutes as printed in The Distributor. Old Business Rand Red Hots Cruise Night- The weather did not cooperate but everyone had fun anyway. Blackhawk Farms Vintage Racing- Colin James reported that it was a beautiful Father’s day with 19 drivers and 7 Model A’s in attendance. John Rozny served hot dogs for lunch. There was a lot to see including a prewar race. It was a great time for all. National Meet- The Sweet 16 A’s sponsored the meet in Perrysburg, Ohio. According to Chris, they did a flawless job with many different activities including a self-defense class, watercolor painting, and a murder mystery on a train, with our very own Vince Scalabrino as the “guilty one”. Friday night was the awards banquet. Two of our members went home with awards: Jay Wychoff received the Masters Award with 485 points with his 4 door Blind back, and Val Maron who won the Mark of Excellence, the Henry Ford Award, and Best of Show, scoring 494 out of 500 points! Thank you for making the Illinois Region proud! 4th of July Parades-John Drenenberg did an awesome job coordinating all the parades and participants, which took months to achieve. John thanked everyone who participated in the parades. They were a few cars short for the Skokie parade, and over for others. All information concerning the parades will be sent via email in the future. The crowds really enjoyed the cars, and the club enjoyed a profit of $1,650.00 New Business Treasurer’s Report-Mike Dennis reported we have a balance of $9806.53. The financials are printed here in the magazine. Editor-Mike Goode reported that the Distributor is back to black and white. There was a misunderstanding concerning the cost of the color issues, which are $350 per issue rather than per year. Mike paid for the two color issues that made it to print rather than the club. Activities Report- Vince reported on the following upcoming activities. -Illinois Region Picnic-Val Koepke is in charge of the picnic on Sunday, July 17 at John and Marilyn Krenger’s home. Please make sure your name is on the sign-up sheet if you are attending, and please bring a dish to pass. -Parking Lot Swap/Dinner-August 2 meeting includes dinner for $1.00. Chris Rozny invited everyone to bring a table and parts for the swap. The $1.00 dinner includes pulled pork, beans, and coleslaw. Invite your friends and neighbors so that they can learn about our great club. Cruise Night in Mundelein-Wednesday, August 10, featured car is the Model A Ford. Model A & T Swap meet-held on Saturday, August 10, and will be at Ken Ehrenhofer’s beginning around 7:00am. He is looking for helpers for the event. Mark is working on the “space” information for what will be one of the best swap meets around. Gilmore, Michigan Model A Days-September 16-17. There are wonderful museums in Gilmore including new museums for Lincolns and Cadillacs. There will be several tech talks and seminars and they also have one of the best swap meets around. Other- There will be a train going from Chicago to Milwaukee which features and murder mystery/dinner. It is a little expensive, but well worth it. There are also several car shows in Mount Prospect coming up. July 6, 2016 National News-Ken Ehrenhofer also reported on the National Meet in Ohio. A lot of people attended and had a great time. The youth who attended took a chassis apart one day and put it back together (with some adult help) the next, and made it run. The banquet was outstanding and he spoke about awards won by Jan Wychoff and Val Maron. A fall tour is being planned for Newberg, NY-Hudson Valley. There will be a welcoming party at Orange County Choppers, and a bus tour to the 9/11 Memorial and West Point. The Membership Meet for 2017 will be in Shipshewana, Indiana. A few members from our club have volunteered to help. This is a great Amish town with many craft and hobby shops. Next year’s National Meet will take place in Gettysburg. If you are planning to attend, make your hotel reservations now as 150 reservations were made in one day after the announcement was made at this year’s National Meet. Youth Activities Coordinator-Amy Rozny is working on a national level to get more kids involved in the hobby. She did an outstanding job at the National Meet, addressing a crowd of over 400 people. There will be more youth activities at next year’s National Meet. Club Sales- Mark Maron reported that they are offering T-shirts, polos, etc. Bob Friskes mentioned he will be handling the swap at the August meeting. Announcements-Sue Symanski reported that past member Mary Molnar passed away. A card and flowers were sent from the Club. Our condolences to Mary’s friends and family. Sue also mentioned that Jim Dodaro’s wife, Judy, is sick and on a ventilator. We send Jim and Judy prayers. Guests/New Members-Dan Pritchett announced that 33 members have signed in. There was one guest, Jim Patterson’s son Mike from Oregon, who drove in two parades during his visit. Membership- Mike Kochevar reported that there were no new members. Awards- Steve presented awards to Colin James and his family for the Blackhawk Farms Vintage Racing, which was accepted by his son, Theo. John and Carol Drenenberg received awards for the 4th of July Parades. John in turn presented dash plaques to all of the drivers who participated. Director’s Comments-Chris did not personally make any announcements, but asked Mark Maron to comment on Val’s near perfect car at the National. He said that 17 cars were displayed, all of which were magnificent. He spoke of the nervousness of the experience as well as the highlight of taking the 3 mile required drive. He told everyone that the car was 9 years in the making at that many people helped. Comments from the Membership-Mark Maron mentioned that he has an original book from a Montana Ford Dealer which logged the dealership activity from 1928-31. Ken Ehrenhofer has an article that confirms that the Illinois Region is the oldest Region in MARC, having formed in 1955. Jerry Tiesch held the 50-50 raffle and Blanche told a joke. Motion was made and seconded for adjournment at 8:50pm. A Tech Talk was presented by Colin James on transmissions. Respectfully submitted -Susan Holmes Help promote our hobby by bringing your Model A to multi make cruise nights this Summer! See www.carcruisechicago.com for information. Tech Talk This month’s tech talk isn’t about how to tune your car up or how to really do anything to an actual Model A. But many of us enjoy collecting auto related items to go along with our favorite little flivvers. While visiting the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan, Member Coordinator and Greeter Dan Pritchett admired the restored Shell gas station there. One item in particular, a shell back vintage patio chair, caught his attention. He happened to have a couple of old shell back chairs at home. Aided by a picture he had taken of the chair at the gas station, he sandblasted and repainted his own chairs, this time using Shell Oil Company yellow with red letters and accents. Flanking his garage door, they looked great and grabbed the attention of many. Dan went on to redo a few other various vintage chairs using different company logos. Dan did some research and found that the vintage chairs were made from the 1940s to the 1960s. There are many styles, especially the backs. Some of the arms and legs are made of spring steel. He has replaced rusted out legs with electrical conduit, which does require some extra reinforcement as this material is not quite as strong as the original material. He relies on different stencils and narrow artists tape, and has improved his skill as he has progressed. He has painted various chairs, including a Cubs chair recently for his son in law. Dan has found a source for new chairs to redo to replace his inventory of vintage chairs, which are very similar in appearance. If you are interested in having a custom chair done (your own or one that Dan furnishes), contact Dan Pritchett. His information is printed on page 2 of The Distributor under the Officers and Staff heading. CONTEST TIME! The Model A pictured below is quite significant for an amazing accomplishment for both it and its drivers. The first person to correctly tell us, via email, this significance as well as the names of the drivers-and we need specifics-will get a $25.00 gift certificate courtesy of your charming editor, for Antique Engine Rebuilding in Skokie, IL. If you have no need for the prize, you’ll get bragging rights printed here in September’s issue and an Atta boy or Atta girl. Answers must be sent to [email protected]. Must be in before August 20, 2016. Period Fashion and Events Last month we talked about two important and stylish people from 1928. This month, we have two people who were popular for decades, particularly the 1920s and 30s, and who were also known for high style and for not being afraid to risk it all to push for what they believed in. Norma Shearer-Model and Actress. Norma Shearer was certainly popular for much longer a period than summer of 1929, when this photo was taken. As you can see, Norma was certainly very stylishthat outfit would look good today, don’t you think? She was very active in movies from 1919-42, when she took an early retirement at age 40. She enjoyed renewed popularity in the 1950s, 70s, and late 80s and once again in the 1990s, over a decade after her death. She struggled early on, after moving to New York from Montreal to try out for the Zigfried Follies (which she was turned down for), but became a successful model. She finally got a break in film, working her way up from B movies to a long run of very successful pictures. She was eventually nominated for the Academy Award 6 times, winning once, for The Divorcee. Perhaps most important was the role that Norma shared both on and off screen-that of a powerful, liberated woman. When offered the roll of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, she said, “No Thanks-I’d prefer to play Rhett!”. Norma saw herself as a man’s equal both on and off screen, becoming the epitome of the modern woman. She starred in roles that one might consider controversial at the time, stood by her moral beliefs, and was very much in control of her workseven when that meant fighting executives at MGM (a battle which she won in court). If you have not heard of Norma Shearer, look her up and look for some of her movies. King Vidor was a successful Film Director, Producer, and Writer even before he came out with his August 1929 release, Hallelujah. This was one of the very first all-black films by a major studio, and that made the folks at MGM very nervous-enough that they made King Vidor invest his own salary into making it. And make it Vidor did-his first sound film was a commercial and critical success, and went on to earn him the nomination for the Oscar for Best Director. Hallelujah also represented authentic black religious music and entertainment. Photoplay praised both Vidor and the actors-who had never been before a camera or microphone before. The soundtrack was considered remarkable for the time as well. National Meet-Ohio 4th of July Parades Our Club Picnic (Above, L) Seventy one going on eight! I think Ken might be harder to be coaxed out of the pool than anyone! Illinois Region August 2016 Meeting (L) If Colin can’t fix it, Theo has an Adjustment tool that can. Other images below-awards. Yes, it’s possible, part 2 We’re not sure if the photo of Steve and Deborah Sarasin’s run in with the law in last month’s Distributor is causing other members to try similar daredevil acts with their Model A’s, but this is an actual photo of the Rozny’s on the highway on the way back from the National Meet. Not only are they on a type of road that was not even thought of back in the day of our little cars, but notice that they are not even in the rightmost lane-but someone this brave is not someone you’d want to meet in a dark alley at night. Christine denies any memory of this. Our Model A’s are more capable than even old Henry thought-and there are overdrives and 4 speeds and other modifications that can make long distance highway travel a reality. ON THE COVER: Val Maron’s 1929 Roadster Mark and I joined the Illinois Region when we bought our first Model A from Mike Podgorski-a green Tudor that Mark worked on long and hard enough to earn a 500-point MARC of Excellence in Touring. I wanted my own car and after searching, located a 1929 Roadster in Idaho. I brought the car back in crates, buckets, and baskets via U Haul in the dead of winter. I decided to go for the Henry Award (little did I know how much more time, money, detail, sweat, research and team work it would take). We started the restoration immediately, working on the chassis nightly, enlisting the help of my 80-year old mom who helped me sand the frame. Every part was disassembled, photographed, documented and it all HAD to be stored in my living room so it would not be damaged in the garage. At this point we had little knowledge as to what a Fine Point Restoration required, so we enlisted the help of Ken and Ron Ehrenhofer and came up with a restoration plan. For the next 9 years we searched and collected all NOS parts. Mark researched, read, and made calls to find what we needed. Often we would buy 10 of the same item (after all, who doesn’t need 10 fuel bowls and 6 light bails for the same car?). It was decided that we were going to aim for the National in Ohio to show the car. Work was now on at a feverish pace-practically every item was triple checked. We knew that we needed to get at least 480 points for the Henry OR within 10 points of the highest scoring car at the meet over 465. We had a few items up our sleeve, including our secret weapon-an ORIGINAL 1929 FORD BATTERY, which we located purely by chance and restored. Finally, the car was ready to go. Ron, Ken, Jan, Mark, and the Barn crew were working 7 days a week and there was not even time to test drive the car. Ron announced we would just do that at the meet. No reason to argue, I just figured Mark would be in trouble if things didn’t work out! We arrived in Ohio with so much support from the Illinois Region and our west coast friends, as well as many from other areas, who had flown in. It meant the world to me that a number of these people had come all this way just for the day to support me. Finally, it was time for the required drive, and after Ron walked me through starting it, Mark got in, and after 9 years of hard work, he yelled, “We built a car!’. I was off on the inaugural drive. Stiff clutch and tight steering, just like it came off the assembly line, I put 3 miles on it. Everything worked (OK, maybe a few tweaks in the parking lot!). It was now or never. Judging was a long day, with many incredible cars being judged. I was hoping for those 480 points to achieve the coveted Henry Award. Friday night was the awards banquet, and the last thing you want to hear is your name called early, as awards are given in order of points. 14 cars were judged. We were down to 3 cars and my name had still not been called. Another car was called for a Henry, and then it was announced that my good friend Rick Nance scored 490 points. Mark leaned over and said to me, “This is bad, they have made a terrible, embarrassing mistake by not calling your name-there is no way Rick Nance has a lower score than you”. Ron looked at me and said, “You made the 490 club”. Mark said “No way!”. Then it happened-the announcement came “Val Maron, Number 265, 1929 Roadster, 494 points, the Marc of Excellence, the Henry Ford Award and the High Point Car of the show”! I ran to the podium in tears and heard Mark scream “YES!”. So many people made this possible and there is just not room to thank everyone. Ken and Ron Ehrenhofer-truly the best in the business, Jan Wychoff, Bob, Teacher Mark, Steve James, Jim Patterson and the entire barn crew. Thank you to Mark for your drive, confidence, research and knowledge that made this happen- WE DID IT! NO, you cannot drive it and YES, I want it back in my living room now! -Val Maron Congratulations to Val Maron on an epic effort and an amazing award, and for making the club and entire hobby proud!
