July 2015
As our Illinois Region calendar clearly shows, June seems to be our busiest month yet. A nice turnout of
“A”s toured to Sharon, Wisconsin for the annual Model A Days joined by others from the tri-state area. On
June 16 many of us went to the Galt Airport “Barnstorming” event. Model “A”s made up the majority of
antique cars there. Several planes were on hand including two restored bi-planes that were personal
favorites of mine. Unfortunately, cloudy overhead skies prevented those of us that wanted to fly in
excursions that were planned. However a nice breakfast, viewing of the cars and planes was capped off by a
lineup of our cars with the planes as a photographic backdrop. Several of us have used the past couple
months of activities to ready our “A”s for the national meet in Niagara Falls, Canada. A respectful amount
of members are planning to attend this year. The Illinois Region will be well represented there.
Deborah Sarasin has volunteered to run our Awards Banquet. This will be held in early January. We want
to combine this event with a celebration of the Illinois Region 60 th Anniversary as a club. Several ideas
have been put forth to make this a very special event. If you have a suggestion please contact Deborah, her
husband (and club editor) Steve, or myself.
Hope to see all that have volunteered to drive in our July 4 th parades. This is a very ambitious effort by us
attending six parades on July 4th.
Dan

Meeting was called to order at 7:42 PM by Dan Pritchett. Dan
welcomed everyone. Motion made and seconded to approve the
May Business Meeting minutes as printed in the Distributor.
Old Business
ABC Meet – We resurrected an old event a few weeks ago.
Vince reported that we had 21 cars attending. All the winners
received great trophies. 25-30 people attended. Dan added that if
you didn’t make it, you missed a great event. The main judges
brought in other members to demonstrate what was correct on the
cars. Laverne Podgorski gave special thanks to the judges.
June 2, 2015
trade parades let him know. We are signed up for six communi
ties. We are looking to get magnetic signs to put on the cars so
people can see who we are and what we are doing. Dan mentioned that we need people to sign up for the remaining openings.
The club is going to order enough signs so we can have at least
one set per parade. We can sell them for $25 each if anyone
wants to purchase their own set.
Club Sales – Mark Maron said he has items for sale and he is taking orders for next month delivery
Mini-Swap – Bob Friskis has parts for sale. Dan mentioned that
members can bring in items to sell.
New Business
Treasurer’s Report - Don Morman reported the financials as
printed in the magazine. We have a balance of $6,033.05.
Editor – Steve Sarasin reported that the classified section is growing. Please keep him updated if something is sold or fulfilled so
he can make space for other items. If anyone wants to run an ad
contact Steve.
Teen Activity – Amy Rozny is working on it, and she hopes to
have something for the teenagers this summer.
National Events – Ron talked about the National events. We have
at least 12 Model As going to Niagara Falls. If you want to go let
Ron know so you can join a group. If you haven’t registered yet,
you can still register. To date there are approximately 375 registrations.
Gilmore Part Swap is in the fall. All proceeds go to MAFFI.
Also, Ken Ehrenhofer has a swap on August 22 with all proceeds
going to the MAFFI.
There is also a MAFCA event in Maine.
Next year there will be a tour along the Hudson River with the
MARC club.

Mike and Laverne are leading the pack. Mike Podgorski
wants to depart at 7:45 AM from the Cary Family Restaurant
on Northwest Hwy.
Galt Airport – We are leaving on the 13th of June from
McDonalds. We will have breakfast at Galt for half price.
They will offer airplane rides and want to accommodate our
group in whatever way.
Picnic – Val will provide some type of meat. Guests should
bring a dish to pass on July 26
Vintage Transport Show at Union – August 2 – Dan reported

They have added other museums to the complex.
Fall Tour - Mike Kochevar – It will be in Moline IL the beginning of October or the end of September.
Parades – John Drengenberg thanked everyone for signing up, but
he needs a couple more cars. He needs cars for Skokie and Evanston. See John or call him with questions. If anyone wants to
Announcements - Sue Szymanski reported that Joe Falotico
passed away. It happened on March 18. He was a long time
member of the club. He had been hospitalized for a month before
he died. He was 81 years old. He loved the cars. Was always
happy and will be missed.
New Member Coordinator – Ron Ehrenhofer reported we have
one guest – Fran Woods from Arlington Heights. He just inherited his father’s Model A Tudor Sedan. Former member Bob
Hanselman was introduced – who stated he was here to sell his
home in Arlington Heights.
Awards and Dash Plaques - Chris Rozny gave a service award to
Mike and LaVerne Podgorski for running the ABC Meet.
Membership – Mike Kochevar reported we have 124 members.
Greeter- Mark Maron reported that we have 58 members, 8 cars,
and 1 Tbird in attendance.
Dan mentioned that he has extra dash plaques from events that
were held this year.
Dan commented that we have heard a lot about insurance recently. A couple weeks ago, after a lot of work Mike Podgorski was
told we need 2 million dollars insurance or we could not hold the
ABC meet at the designated local. Ken Ehrenhofer suggested Dan
call the National office. He spoke with a woman in the office and
she emailed him the insurance documentation within four hours.
MARC came to our aide but we need their assistance for our hobby and our club.
Deb Sarasin has agreed to run the Anniversary Party. Thank
you!!
Laverne said Mike have copies of the score sheets from the ABC
Meet. Dan Manola has a tech talk for us.
Blanche, Jim and Andy Stockinger told a joke and held the raffle.
Motion was made and seconded for adjournment.
Meeting adjourned at 8:26 PM
Respectfully submitted,
Melinda Pritchett

Monthly Meeting Awards & Technical Session (Electrical Disconnect Switch & Cables):
Cover Photo – My “KATE” / Dianne Lee Kory
My love affair with the Model A started when I was twelve years old. My Uncle, Hank had a Fordor and he taught
me how to drive on the country roads. I remember drawing the “H” with the corresponding numbers for shifting the
gears and memorizing them. I loved the sound and the feel of that wonderful car. He couldn’t keep me off the
horn. I vowed to have one of my own someday. Finally, my dream came true. About nine years ago I saw a 1930
Town Sedan for sale in Burlington, Wisconsin. I took a Model A expert with me to “steer me” in the right
direction. Joe Passalaqua said it was a good solid car and that I wouldn’t go wrong buying it. He said it had very
good sheet metal, solid doors and good interior wood. The inside was gutted except for the condominiums of
HORNETS!
My goal was to restore Henry’s Lady to her original glory. I have named her” Kate” after the great Kate Hepburn.
My challenge was on and brother what a challenge. I joined two Model A Clubs and met some wonderful people
who were willing to answer my endless questions. I collected all the available reference manuals, service bulletins,
restoration tips and shop manuals and studied them. I went to every “swap meet” to buy used “original” parts and
began the project. My greatest resources were the devoted club members, they were the real experts. These fellows
had restored a number of cars and really knew what they were doing. Joe Passalaqua changed the broken pulley,
adjusted the brakes and taught me all about setting the timing and the function of the generator “cutout”.
I removed the gas tank for proper acid dipping and then interior sealing. Next, the radiator had to be cleaned and
pressure tested. Restoration of the differential is a particularly “greasy” memory for me. Jack Thomas seemed
surprised that I wanted to be right in there cleaning and checking the teeth on the spider gears. We were both
shocked at the amount of dirt and sand in the tube. Another greasy job was the restoration of brakes. Unfortunately, some things I learned the hard way. Frank Smith and I got the brakes done only to repeat the whole process
again once the retaining rings were applied to the drums. Lots of cuts, bruises and pinched fingers made me
appreciate what it takes to do this restoration work. It is particularly challenging to reattach the various springs that
are part of the “lady’s” brake assembly. I have the scars to prove it.
In preparing the car for her new paint I had to sand every inch of her. The fenders had to be sanded top and bottom.
Then, she went off to the painter for a coat of “filler primer”. When she came back I had to sand every inch of her
again and again.
Once while attempting to remove a particularly stubborn castle nut under the chassis, my wrench slipped and my
hand slammed into the hanging battery holder. The metal was as sharp as a razor slicing a deep gash through my
thumb and hand. Chuck Kelley gave me a piece of shop paper towel and some duct tape ...to put pressure on the
wound and stop the bleeding. We continued to install the clutch assembly and I am proud to say, without a tear.
We thought that “Kate” was ready for her “maiden road test” so off we went to the local gasoline station to put a
few gallons of fresh gas. While I was inside paying for the gas … my heart sank. I saw oil pouring out from under
the poor thing like someone had turned on a faucet. Quick … back to the garage to assess the problem. It was a
massive “rear main” leak that required replacement of the short block. More redo work, more cuts and bruises but it
was as always a labor of love.
Chuck Kelley helped me replace the vinyl top molding. Paddy Gardner helped me mount the tire inner tubes. Jim
Antoni reupholstered the seats. I was sure that I would jazz up those pleats. Dave Jahn shared all his tips and hints
with me while together we installed the LeBaron Bonney upholstery kit over five Sundays. Larry Rust restored my
shades with the very expensive, original design material I was fortunate enough to find. Edie Jendahl crocheted the
top covers for “Kate’s” assist straps. I will always be grateful to Jack Thomas who thought me the technique for
woodgraining the moldings and dash. I did them all by myself and they all turned out great.
Mike Podgorski has been my “go to guy”. He has always given me great advice, helped me restore my door
channels and adjusted the wheel alignment. I know it sounds like a role call of the club members, and I guess it is.
I have learned that without their help and the patience and understanding of their wives it couldn’t be done.
Nobody restores one of "Henry’s Ladies" alone! So, to all these good friends goes all the glory and gratitude.
Each one of them has contributed to the successful completion of this restoration. They have all been so generous
in sharing their time, knowledge and expertise. I am extremely grateful for their help and their friendship. Honk if
you see us on road. Don’t be afraid to use that horn!

TECH TALK – Penetrating Oil
“Machinist’s Workshop” recently published information on various penetrating oils.
The magazine reports they tested these products for “break out “torque” on rusted nuts and bolts.
A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required
to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” bolt.
Average torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ……………………516 foot pounds
WD-40 ………………… ……..238 foot pounds
PB Blaster …………………….214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ……………….127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil ……………………106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix………………53 foot pounds
The ATF/Acetone mix is a “home brew” mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.
Note this “home brew” released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results.
Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price.
ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a50/50 mix.
ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid. This version of the story was in one of the Military Vehicle
Club newsletters.
