Hope-Amundson provided the structural engineering
services for this design-build housing facility located
on the UCSD Muir College campus in La Jolla. The
scope also included project program confirmation
resulting in a Detailed Project Program (DPP).
The new campus facility consists of a nine-story,
99,000 square foot apartment building containing
275 beds constructed of cast-in-place concrete
with shear walls providing lateral resistance. A
food services convenience store is located on the
Ground Floor. The resident population is primarily
undergraduate second year students. The campus
was designed to earn LEED Silver certification.

“The Rita,” also known as the Health Sciences
Graduate Housing, is a design-build project
composed of two wings, one seven stories tall
and one nine stories tall, with a total of 226 fully
furnished apartments configured in two-bedroom
units. Amenities include a “green roof,” on-site
conference, study and meeting rooms, gymnasium
and laundry. The design-build process enabled
to keep construction costs down and accelerated
construction. Students were able to move into the
apartments one year ahead of schedule.
The project earned LEED Gold Level Certification
for Core & Shell from the U.S. Green Building
Council.

services for this campus facility located on the
Northeast corner of Interstate 5 and La Jolla Village
Drive, in La Jolla.
One Miramar Street Graduate Student Housing
contains four, four-story metal stud framed
apartment buildings totaling approximately 398,000
square feet, containing 800 apartment-style beds
configured in two-bedroom, one-bathroom units.
In addition to the apartment buildings, HopeAmundson provided the structural design services
for the six-story, 190,000 square foot parking
structure. The parking structure was constructed
of cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete,
accommodating up to 685 vehicles, with an
additional 121 surface level parking spaces. Sundt
performed all of the concrete work for the parking
structure. Hope-Amundson provided the structural
design of all components of the project.

studies, seismic analysis, design and construction
administration services for The Pines dining facility
located at Muir College.
Our scope included a preliminary Tier 1 and Tier 2
seismic evaluation in compliance with ASCE/SEI 4106 and ASCE/SEI 31-03 for the existing cafeteria,
restaurant and mixed use areas. The 26,000 square
foot renovation included the first level of the El
Mercado and the second level Sierra Summit dining
spaces within the Stewart Commons Dining Facility.
The project earned LEED Gold Level Certification
for Core & Shell from the U.S. Green Building
Council.

facility located north of the existing Thornton
Hospital and Cardiovascular Center in La Jolla.
The cast-in-place, post-tensioned long span parking
facility is comprised of two structures: a five-tier,
approximately 216,000 square foot Main Structure
and a three-tier, approximately 209,150 square foot
structure with a soccer field located on the top tier.

structural engineering services for a new medical
facility located on the campus of San Diego State
University.
The Student Health Services Building, also known
as Calpulli Center, is a four-story, 112,300 square
foot facility providing student medical services,
counseling and health education to an expanding
student population at SDSU.
The steel moment frame building is situated over
one level of subterranean parking containing 60
vehicle spaces and is occupied by three separate
departments within the Division of Student
Affairs: Student Health Services, Counseling and
Psychological Services and Disabled Student
Services. Calpullli Center provides high quality
health services for students, including Urgent Care,
Imaging, Optometry, Pharmacy, General Medicine,
Health Promotion, Specialty Clinics, Administration
and Medical Records.

The Donald P. Shiley Science & Technology Center
is a four story, 150,000 square foot educational
building unifying the Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Marine Science and Environmental Studies
departments under one roof. The reinforced
concrete building utilizes a concrete floor and roof
framing system and concrete shear wall lateral
system. The floor system was subjected to vibration
analysis for the department’s use of high-powered
microscopes.
The Spanish Renaissance-style center contains
73 laboratories, as well as several aquariums,
a greenhouse, fluid dynamics laboratory, aviary
and astronomy deck. The Center allows for
classes in multiple science disciplines, promoting
interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning.

Provided the structural engineering services for this
90,000 square foot, two-story steel moment frame
structure situated over an 86,000 square foot, twolevel subterranean cast-in-place parking garage.
The Institute for Peace and Justice was built to
serve the University’s new master’s degree program
in peace studies, houses classrooms, conferences,
visiting scholars and working areas for mediation
and dispute resolution. The largest feature of
the 90,000 square foot Institute is a 270-seat
centrally located auditorium with break-out rooms
and entrance rotunda. Also included among the
classrooms and faculty offices are a production
studio, a mediation center and Board room.
The project was made possible with a $25 million
gift from the late San Diego philanthropist Joan B.
Kroc, who asked that the Institute be a place that not
only “talked about peace, but made peace.”

architect to provide the structural engineer services
for this new educational facility. The site selected
for this project was previously used as a surface
parking lot.
The School of Leadership and Educational Sciences
(SOLES) campus facility is two-stories above grade
with one basement level of parking, containing
approximately 215 vehicle spaces. SOLES features
15 classrooms, a 200-seat auditorium, a 60-seat
executive training classroom, underground parking
and an 800-square foot instructional resource
center, a 2,000 square foot reading room and a
terrace cafe.

Hope-Amundson was retained by the project
architect to provide the structural engineering design
and construction documents for a new eight-story
education building with three levels of subterranean
parking, accommodating 175 vehicles. Thomas
Jefferson School of Law, a nationally-known private
non-profit post secondary law school, relocated from
the current location in San Diego’s Old Town to the
East Village.
The eight-story campus has expansive roof
terraces at the Fifth and Eighth levels. The school
is comprised of classrooms, law libraries, faculty
offices and student and faculty lounges. The lobby,
public Law Clinic, Cafe and Bookstore is at grade.
The campus earned LEED Gold Certification for
New Construction from the U.S. Green Building
Council.

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) identified
a need to enlarge and modernize their sciences
curriculum physical facilities when it became
apparent the existing fifty-year old Rohr science
building was not meeting modern needs of the
Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Math and Computer
Science Departments.
The new 44,200 square foot three-story Science
Building immediately adjacent to the Rohr building
contains research laboratories, laboratory support
areas, offices, office support areas and conference
rooms. A viewing deck and an astronomy telescope
deck are located above the lower south end
classrooms. A pedestrian bridge connects the new
Science Building to the soon to be renovated Rohr
building.
The project is framed in cast-in-place concrete and
is planned to be LEED Silver certified.
Founded in 1902, PLNU offers more than sixty
undergraduate areas of study and graduate program
regional centers in San Diego, Bakersfield and the
Inland Empire, serving more than 3,500 students.

This new Math and Science building replaces
aging existing and campus facilities constructed in
the mid-sixties and early seventies. The project
supports the long term growth and enhancement of
Southwestern Community College.
The approximately 92,000 square foot building
consolidates the teaching programs of Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Geography and
Mathematics into one modern facility. Departments
include Life Sciences/Biology, Physical Sciences
and Mathematics. Primary spaces include lab
spaces, lecture rooms, greenhouse, astronomy
observation platform, classrooms, faculty offices,
support spaces, a Dean’s Suite and collaboration
areas. DSA review and approval is required.
The project is targeted for LEED Silver certification.

on the campus of City College in San Diego.
When complete, Building A will be a 53,200 square
foot office building. T Building will be a 76,400
square foot lab classroom building. D Building will
be a 6,000 square foot bookstore renovation. This
project will require LEED Silver certification from the
U.S. Green Building Council.
The project is currently under design and requires
DSA review and approval.

College Campus in San Diego.
When completed, the 46,500 square foot, twostory structure will contain science instructional
laboratories, classrooms and administrative offices.
The structure will be of steel frame construction.
The design-build project is currently under
construction and required DSA review and approval.
Completion is scheduled for June 2014.

the Mesa College campus in San Diego.
The two-story 60,000 square foot structure is a steel
framed Cafeteria and Bookstore Building, including
a food service area, a stockroom, a bookstore and a
culinary arts classroom with kitchen, dining areas, a
student lounge and an outside deck area.
The project is currently under construction and
requires DSA review and approval.

The four-story, 206,000 square foot steel framed
structure consists of steel moment frame and braced
frame construction housing several departments,
including math, biology, chemistry, physical
sciences and administrative / common functions.
Spaces include classrooms, offices, laboratories
and support spaces. Specialty spaces include a
greehouse and an astronomy observation area. The
project required DSA review and approval.
The project is the largest to be built on the Mesa
College Campus with Propositions S and N
construction bond funds.

College.
The campus building includes a computer lab,
classrooms, a clinical dental lab, physical therapy
lab, medical lab, and faculty and staff offices.
Situated at the college’s main campus entry off
Mesa College Drive, the building serves as a
prominent landmark for the college.
Construction of the building for the San Diego
Community College District was funded by the
$1.555 billion Propositions S and N bond program.
The building required DSA review and approval.
The project earned LEED Gold Level Certification
for Core & Shell from the U.S. Green Building
Council.

Headquarters building with a steel-framed roof.
The single-story police facility incorporates a
reception lobby, staff offices, conference areas,
locker and exercise rooms, and other secure areas
for campus police.

Community College District was funded by the
$1.555 billion Propositions S and N bond program.
The building required DSA review and approval. The
project earned LEED Gold Level Certification from

campus.
The six renovated buildings total 25,000 square feet
housing several departments, including Architecture,
Building Construction Technology, Interior Design
and Landscape Architecture. Spaces include
classrooms, computer labs, offices and support
spaces. This project required DSA review and
approval.
Situated on a 104-acre mesa in the geographic
center of San Diego, Mesa College is one of the
largest community colleges in California.

The Kellogg Library is a 200,000 square foot,
five-story steel framed structure with the lower two
levels buried into an existing hillside. The upper
four stories of the building incorporate steel moment
frames, while the lower story consists of brace
frame and concrete shearwall construction, resisting
the pressure from the existing hillside.
As a signature campus building and focal point for
the community, the Kellogg Library blends traditional
library functions with state-of-the-art technology.
Design features include an irregular floor plan and
a roof level exterior cornice. The facility includes
traditional library stack, curriculum and periodical
spaces as well as incorporating a media library
center, classrooms, research services and food
services. The library was named in honor of Janet
R. and W. Keith Kellogg II, in support of the project.

for the design-build construction of a new student
health facility located on the CSU campus in San
Marcos.
When complete, the building will include
examination rooms, medical offices and counseling
spaces and a wellness and health program to an
expanding student population at CSUSM. The
project is designed to meet LEED Gold certification
from the U.S. Green Building Council.
CSUSM combines the ambiance of a mid-sized,
personal, modern campus with the unequaled value
of the California State University.
The project is currently under construction and is
slated for completion in the Fall of 2014.
