President’s Message
December 10,
2014
December has arrived and with
it the cold weather. It seems it
got cold very fast this year but
that should just put all of us in a
skiing mood. If the weather didn’t get you thinking about the
upcoming season, the November meeting should have. If you
missed the meeting you lost out
on a chance to get your skis
waxed by the WSC Race team
and a great presentation on new
equipment and clothing by the
Ski Bum. Also in November,
our club was represented at the
Philly Ski Expo by Betsy
Grosskopf, Sandy Dobbs, Patti Bartlett, and Mich Steele.
They were able to talk with tour
operators and resort reps and
tell other attendees about our
club. This is part of the new mar-
Dessert Bake-off!

Also, the Capers & Lemons
Happy Hour was well attended.
Thanks Anne!
December will be a busy month
for all of us. WSC has three big
events this month starting with
the Mitten Christmas Party on
December 5. Then our Holiday
Monthly Meeting and bakeoff
and finally the first ski trip of the
season to Stowe. I hope everyone gets to at least one event.
We still need trip leaders for day
trips and it is getting late. Please
see Jerry Holt or Craig Wemmers if you are interested
Member of the Month for December is Clyde Dossett. Clyde
has been a long-time member
of the WSC and has been a
member of Council serving as
President on at least two occasions and in many other roles.
He is active in leading trips
each year and picks some of
the best resorts. Clyde was my
mentor as a trip leader when I
first joined the club and his
guidance has proved priceless.
Thank you, Clyde, for all your
time and effort in making our
club better!

EPSC Philly Ski Expo at Crown Plaza
November 2
A good time was had by all! WSC had a good representation at the EPSC/PRW Philly Ski/Snowboard Expo at the
Crown Plaza. We met many members from other EPSC clubs. Shared information. Met new friends. Thanks to
Patti Bartlett, Betsy Goffscroff, Mich Steele, and Sandy Dobbs for their work and participation in this
event. EPSC knows we are an involved, participating, active club. Lynne Cutler, won our first prize of a free day
trip of her choice. Ellen Minnicks won our second prize of a WSC membership thru June 2015. Both winners are
from Main Line Ski Club.

Racing News
Our 2014-2015 ski racing season will begin at Killington, VT on December 12-14 with the ASRA Openers.
(ASRA, American Ski Racing Alliance, is the league we race with.) Also at Killington, December 8-11, there is preseason training at the ASRA Race Camp. So many of my team mates will be in Vermont in mid-December. Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to go to Openers this year. But the good news is I will be able to attend the December ski
club meeting and get fat eating lots of holiday cookies.
We should have a good turnout for Openers. Many of our teammates were skiing well at the end of last season,
so we are looking for good results this year. There will be races throughout January, February and March at sites that
include Elk and Montage in PA and Belleayre in NY. The season will conclude the weekend of March 14 at Pico, VT.
There are a few tentative dates and I expect there will be some races added. I have included our race schedule in this
month’s Scrapings. Our race schedule also will appear on wilmski.org.
Some of our teammates will participate in other races during the ski season such as New York or New England
Masters races. And we usually participate individually and as a group in some NASTAR races.
I was very pleased with the November ski club meeting. The Ski Bum, as always, did a nice job of presenting
information on new equipment and apparel. I was especially impressed with Chris’s discussion on ski construction and
the continuing changes in ski design. He also talked about helmet design and how the helmet distributes the effect of an
impact. As someone who is adept at falling, I strongly urge that people wear a good helmet when skiing or participating
in any “kinetic sport” such as biking, skating, or even water skiing.
The Race Team waxed skis at the November meeting. We raised some money for our social activities. At some
of our bigger races, such as in Vermont or New York, we often have a group dinner at one of the condos and often invite
people from other ski clubs to join us. This waxing money is used to off-set some of those costs. I was pleased with the
turnout for the waxing. Ron Konsza, Rich Zober and Fred Forbes (who all live at least an hour away in Pennsylvania) and Steve Zilli, John Hadfield and Paul Fowser handled the ski waxing and Susan Maximuk handled the organization.
Now for my standard reminder: This is recreational racing. All of us started racing as adults. We do it for the fun.
There is no pressure to do well, other than any pressure we put on ourselves. We do this for the fun of skiing, to improve
our skiing and because we enjoy being with the people we ski with. If you are interested in skiing with us, let me or one
of my teammates know. We are not as interested in good skiers as we are in good team mates. If you don’t race well,
the worst that will happen is they will make you be team captain.
THINK SNOW!

WE NEED LEADERS FOR DAY TRIPS. CONTACT JERRY HOLT AT [email protected] IF INTERESTED. LEADING
AND CO-LEADING DAY TRIPS IS A PREREQUISITE TO BECOMING A WINTER TRIP LEADER. IT’S ALSO A GREAT WAY
TO MEET CLUB MEMBERS.
FAM Trips
(Familiarization and Business Appreciation Trips)
The WSC FAM Trip Policy is to encourage WSC members to become involved in leading ski trips and administration of
the club. Therefore only previous trip leaders, WSC officers and voting council members will be eligible to participate in
these trips.
What is a FAM Trip?
FAM Trips are those offered by travel agencies and resorts at a reduced cost to WSC so trip leaders can become familiar with various ski areas as potential destinations for WSC trips.
So…
If you would like an inexpensive ski trip to benefit WSC and yourself and you have been a Winter Trip Leader, a WSC
officer, or a voting Council member—you, TOO, can go on a FAM trip. Think of joining Council or leading a trip!
Go to http://wilm-ski.squarespace.com/s/fam_2010.pdf for the full policy.
SKI TRIP
