Michael Schmitz Vicar General The Reverend Canon Matthew Talarico Provincial Superior The Reverend Canon Antoine Boucheron Chaplain INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST We have to choose! Money can be used for great good; for our family, our friends, to feed the poor and care for the sick, to defend the weak against oppressors, to spread the word of the Gospel, and to build beautiful churches for the honor of God. But we are not to be servants of the dollar. Rather, the dollar is to serve our needs. There is something obviously wrong with the person whose main interest is in accumulating money for its own sake. This is simply a practical truth. Money has no value in itself; more and more, it is just an entry in a ledger in the bank's computer. Great evil is caused when people ignore the real things in life, concentrating on money, or on complaining that they don't have enough. Our Lord is telling us not to allow ourselves to be weighed down by the non-essential things of the material world; particularly when they keep us from rising to the level of the spiritual things in life. As God who became man, Jesus Christ could have been born into the family of the wealthiest king on Earth. Instead, He chose to be born into the house of a humble carpenter who lived in the backwoods of Israel. We are always wise to imitate Christ. September is coming. It is the month of the Holy Cross, a symbol of self-abnegation, of renunciation of the allurements of the world, of refusal to be weighed down by unnecessary material constraints. Let us allow today's readings to remind us that our hearts must be directed to the things of God, not bound by attachment to the things of earth. “Do not be anxious. Your Father knows that you need these things. Seek first the kingdom of God and His justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Canon Antoine Boucheron Sunday, August 21st 2016 - Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost The Immaculate Heart of Mary August 22nd The attention of Christians was early on attracted by the love and virtues of the Heart of Mary. It was, so to speak, at the foot of the Cross that the Christian heart first made the acquaintance of the Heart of Mary. Simeon's prophecy paved the way, and furnished the devotion with one of its favorite formulae and most popular representations —the heart pierced with a sword. Toward the end of the 11th century, we see slight indications of a regular devotion in a sermon by St. Bernard. Later, St. Thomas Becket practiced a devotion to the joys and sorrows of Mary, initiated by Blessed Hermann (d.1245), one of the first spiritual children of St. Dominic; even later it appeared in St. Bridget's Book of Revelations. St. Bernardine of Siena (d.1444) was absorbed in the contemplation of the virginal heart, and it is from him that the Church has borrowed the lessons of the Second Nocturn for the feast of the Heart of Mary. St. Francis de Sales speaks of the perfections of this heart, the model of love for God, and dedicated to it his Theotimus. But it was reserved to St. John Eudes (d. 1681) to propagate the devotion, along with that of the Sacred Heart, to make it public, and to have a feast celebrated in honor of the Heart of Mary. With the revelation of the “Miraculous Medal” in 1830 and all the prodigies that followed, and then the establishment of the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Refuge of Sinners, which spread rapidly throughout the world, the Congregation of Rites finally approved the Office and Mass of the Most Pure Heart of Mary without, however, imposing them upon the Universal Church. Pius XII instituted the feast for the whole Church, so as to obtain by her intercession "peace among nations, freedom for the Church, the conversion of sinners, the love of purity and the practice of virtue" (Decree of May 4, 1944). At Fatima in 1917 the Blessed Virgin Mary made known the principal practices of the Five First Saturday devotion to the little children, which she requested in honor of her Immaculate Heart: I promise to assist at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for salvation all those who, on the First Saturday of five consecutive months, confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me. He was a faithful disciple of Christ Crucified, and his life bears witness to the truth that virtue is not always rewarded in this world. Brought up religiously by his mother, Blanche of Castille, he was deeply devout all his life, and, as a king, his conduct was that of a real saint. He devoted himself to the affairs of his kingdom and to those of Christendom and was a great peace-maker. He was humble and upright, helpful to the needy and personally nursed lepers and the sick. He was also a Franciscan Tertiary. Louis loved sermons, heard two Masses daily, and was surrounded, even while traveling, with priests chanting the hours; he also recited the Divine Office daily. In 1230 the King forbade all forms of usury, in accordance with the teachings of the Christian religion, and those who were found guilty were penalized by having to contribute to the crusades. Following an illness he made a vow to undertake a crusade for the deliverance of the holy places sanctified by the blood of the Redeemer. But instead of triumph and victory, he met with defeat and captivity at the hands of the Saracens, and when at last he was ransomed by his people, he brought back to Paris as a symbolic trophy of his campaigns, the crown of thorns once worn by Our Savior. (As an aside, this holy king issued orders that all acts of violence committed by his soldiers should be punished and restitution made to the persons injured while he forbade the killing of any infidel taken prisoner, according to the Gospel of Christ.) Setting out on a new crusade a few years later he encountered an epidemic of typhus which decimated his army in Africa. He died of this plague under the walls of Tunis, to which he was about to lay siege, lying on a bed of ashes on August 25, 1270. He was canonized 27 years after his death in 1297. He is most famous for his last instructions to his eldest son, Lord Philip; he was father to 11 children. The custom of genuflecting at the words in the Credo, et homo factus est, and making a profound reverence at the passage in the Gospels recording the death of Jesus Christ was introduced by this pious king in his own chapel; now these practices are part of the ceremonial at Mass. 2 LITURGICAL CALENDAR: AUGUST 21 - AUGUST 28, 2016 Sun., Aug. 21 8:00 a.m. Low Mass/organ 10:00 a.m. High Mass Chorale Mon. Mother Teresa to be Canonized Sept. 4th 2016 Mother Teresa, the Albanian-born nun of Calcutta, India, famous for her works of charity for the poor and sick, is to be canonized on September 4, 2016. The official feast day for Mother Teresa will be September 5, the anniversary of her earthly death and heavenly birth. Last December, 2015, a panel of cardinals and bishops affirmed a second “inexplicable” recovery of a Brazilian who suddenly woke from a coma caused by a viral brain infection in 2008. His wife had been invoking the help of Mother Teresa. The man was about to undergo an emergency operation when a surgeon returned to the operating room “and found the patient inexplicably awake and without pain.” He made an immediate and full recovery. * DON’T FORGET SCRIP * Please Support the Oratory by using Scrip for your groceries, gas, hobbies and necessities.
