SMILES FOR LIFE
SUCCESS IN 2005
Smiles for Life, our annual children’s charity, came to
another successful conclusion this past June. In just
four months, we raised almost $50,000. Thanks to
the efforts at Dental Care of Stamford, Kids in Crisis
will receive half that amount. The other half goes to
Smiles for Life for national distributions to healthrelated charities.
Kids in Crisis is a family services organization that
offers free 24-hour help for Fairfield County children
and families, including counseling, intervention and
emergency shelter for those in need. For more

Since the campaign began 7 years ago, over 20 million
dollars has been raised for Smiles for Life.

We all know the importance of regular
dental visits with the hygienist at Dental
Care. In addition to proper brushing and
flossing at home, using the best dental
products makes a big difference in gum
health and preventing cavities. Use what

and prescription strength fluoride for

the other healthy teeth. Of course if they
come in straight and you can brush and
floss them to keep them healthy they do
not need to be removed, but that is more
the exception than the rule.

Dr. Steve Scher has been creating straight
and healthy teeth at Dental Care for the
last 18 years. He is a board certified
Orthodontist who received his doctoral
and post doctoral degree in Orthodontics
at N.Y.U.
Teeth that are aligned are not only
important from a cosmetic point of view,
but when crowded or crooked, they trap
plaque more easily and are more difficult
to clean. Another point that is sometimes
overlooked is fixing the bite. An uneven
bite caused by crooked teeth can damage
the jaw joints and muscles over time,
leading to head, neck or facial pain.
Dr. Scher not only straightens teeth, but
does it in a way so that the alignment of
the teeth is in harmony with the jaw
joints. This helps the teeth stay straight
over time. Dr. Scher treats adults as well
as children and feels it is never too late to
straighten your teeth if you want to. He
is certified in Invisalign® (invisible
braces). This is a great way for adults to
straighten their teeth without metal
braces and wires.
For many of us, when we get thirsty the
beverage of choice is a soft drink. People
will drink soda and sports drinks without
realizing they have as much as 10
teaspoons of sugar per bottle. In addition,
carbonated beverages contain acids that
damage tooth enamel, causing even more
decay. For that reason, even diet sodas
that do not contain sugar can cause decay
and are not good for your teeth.
Minimizing the frequency of these
drinks is the key. This is because each
drink is an exposure that generates an
acid production response by bacteria.
Each sugar exposure results in twenty
minutes of acid production. From a
decay standpoint, the amount of sugar
we eat or drink is not as important as the
number of times per day we eat or drink
sugar foods and beverages.
Choosing water or 100 percent fruit juice
drinks over sports drinks or carbonated
soda is much better for your long-term
dental health.
STOPPING YOUR
HEADACHES NOW
Headaches have been an unwelcome part
of millions of people’s lives for centuries.
There have been many solutions to this
problem, ranging from drug to distraction
therapies such as meditation and yoga.
Neither of these approaches provide a
long-term cure and drug treatments can
have serious, negative side effects.
The fact is that we cannot have a cure
until we have a diagnosis. Our Dr. Jerry
Simon has at least part of the answer in
his patented "Best-Bite" device. At the
national meeting of the American
Headache Society, Dr. Allan Bernstein,

director of neurology at Kaiser
Permanente in Santa Rosa, California,
presented a paper where 65 patients with
chronic headaches were studied. After
their medicine failed to control the pain
at home, they called into the hospital
and upon arrival had a "Best-Bite" device
made for them.
20 percent had complete relief and
another 50 percent had 50 percent relief
of their headaches in less than five
minutes. This proves that an astounding
70 percent of all of these people had
headaches from their bite.

NO WISDOM IN
KEEPING YOUR
WISDOM TEETH
Why are there wisdom teeth? They are
called wisdom teeth because they come
into the mouth around age 18, when we
are more mature. Unfortunately there is
often not enough room for these late
arriving teeth so they get stuck or
impacted and cannot grow into a normal
position in your mouth.
Wisdom teeth often need to be removed
because germs get trapped under the gum
line and can cause nasty infections that
cannot be completely cured, even with
antibiotics. In addition, they can cause
