Alumni Parent Honor Roll of Donors
Letter from the President
Dear Friends of Northwest Catholic,
“True happiness is found in unselfish love, a love which increases in proportion as it is
shared.” — Thomas Merton
Those present in the Cathedral of St. Joseph at this year’s commencement exercises
were riveted by the words of Rev. Rick Frechette ’71. For more than two decades, Fr.
Rick has been giving his most precious resources – his time and the love in his heart —
to the poorest of the poor in Haiti. By giving all he has to offer, he brings dignity and
hope to the impoverished and uneducated. During his talk, he impressed upon our
graduates that, when he was a senior at Northwest Catholic, his future was no different from theirs — he began his life’s journey from the same pews in which they were
sitting that evening.
The power of Fr. Rick’s message lies in the beautiful expression of his inner self. To be in his presence is to understand that he gives completely of himself to others. This manifestation of giving of self is the thread that runs through
this issue of Logos.
The faculty, students, alumni, and parents in our community are endowed with many gifts. In different ways, and
in varying degrees, we witness every day how these individuals share their gifts with others. The stories in this issue
demonstrate how people adopt the values they’ve learned here and carry them out into the world. I urge you to read
the article by Wilder Leavitt ’82, in which he describes how he assisted a helpless individual in dire need. Read the
remarkable commencement speeches of Sarah Schwartz ’07 and Kimberly Oaks ‘07, two teenagers who were honored
for their academic achievements yet chose to speak about the way their community service shaped their careers at
Northwest Catholic. Then I respectfully ask you to send me an email ([email protected]) and let me know if
these pieces did not bring a tear to your eye.
There are students at Northwest Catholic who will follow the road taken by Fr. Rick. Many others will come to
understand that their daily expressions of love, shared with friends and neighbors right here at home, can also transform lives in meaningful ways. Within the fullness of our community percolates the hopes, desires and joys of people whose happiness is found in the multifaceted ways in which they share their gifts.
In this issue, you will also find our Annual Report – which seems only fitting, since it is the financial gifts from our
many donors that make the present possible for our current students. These gifts, too, are expressions of love and hope
for the future of our School. And, we — faculty, staff, volunteers, and Board members – are grateful to give ourselves
in service to them as well.
Sincerely,
Matthew O’N. Fitzsimons
President

The Greek word
or logos (pronounced lo-gaas) is defined as “word” or
“meaning.” St. John’s gospel opens: “In the beginning was Logos (the Word),
and Logos was with God, and Logos was God.” The phrase “Word (Logos) of
God,” found in John 1:1 and elsewhere, shows God’s desire and ability to
“speak” to the human. The Dominicans (the founding Order of Northwest
Catholic) have been noted for their effective ability to preach the word. The
mission of the Dominicans is to provide intellectual formation, social communication, and service through word and action. Our publication, Logos, conveys our mission and values through this medium of the word.

H
This is the environment in which Rev. Richard Frechette ’71,
Northwest Catholic’s 2007 commencement speaker, has labored
over the past 20 years – a labor of love that so captivated the 139
graduates and their families, you could hear a pin drop.
Fr. Frechette arrived in Hartford late on June 5, the night
before graduation. He couldn’t leave Haiti, he said, until he’d
completed one of his most gruesome, yet grace-filled, daily
chores: burying the children who’d died overnight. “I bathe
them, anoint them with scented oils, wrap them, and bury them
in papier mache coffins we make ourselves,” he said. “[Because]
there isn’t enough wood left in Haiti for them to have wooden
coffins.”
He would be back in Haiti in time to perform the same task
the next day. Despite the stunning sadness of these images, Fr.
Frechette bore an amazingly peaceful mien as he addressed the
bright and hopeful young adults seated before him.
“I remember when I was a student, reading 1984, and how it
seemed so far away,” he said, adding that the unexpected death
of a classmate was another vivid memory from his high school
years. “You see how short our life is; how fast it goes. How are
we going to spend the precious amount of time we have together on this earth?”
He urged the graduates to follow a “golden thread” they’d

and God. His thread had led him, he said, to Mexico, to
Honduras, and then to Haiti, when he joined a charismatic
priest, Fr. William Wasson, who was building a home for
Haitian children orphaned by the ravages of disease and violence.
Richard Frechette’s personal “golden thread” is remarkable.
At Northwest Catholic, he was actively involved in the community, participating in the Mission Club, the Dramateurs, Ski
Club, Junior Achievement, Up with People, Great Books Club,
NOWECA, and the Spanish Club. He was also a member of the
National Honor Society.

tender and respectful care of their bodies is one of
Fr. Rick’s most sacred duties.

A graduate of Assumption College, Fr. Frechette went on to
earn two Master’s degrees in theology from St. John’s University
in New York before being called to the Congregation of the
Passion, a Catholic order of priests commonly referred to as the
Passionists. After ordination, he went to Mexico to study
Spanish and begin his ministry work. From Mexico, he went to
Honduras for four years to open and run an orphanage for children.
dition continued to deteriorate; today, Haiti has an 80% poverty rate. The “brain drain” that occurred caused many professionals to flee the country. The need for professional health care
providers was urgent, and in the 1990s Fr. Frechette believed his
power to serve the people of Haiti had reached a plateau. To
meet the overwhelming need for adequate health care, he determined that he must leave Haiti for a short time to earn a medical degree in the United States.
In 1987, when Fr. Frechette and Fr. Wasson began their work
with Haitian orphans, mortality of children accounted for half
of all yearly deaths. The children served by their orphanage and
in the surrounding areas were so afflicted with AIDS, tuberculosis, starvation, and other problems that it was necessary to
establish a hospice, as well.
Twenty-five years after graduation from Northwest Catholic,
Fr. Frechette’s “golden thread” was taking him in a new direction. He trained to be a physician at the New York College of
Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology in
Westbury, New York. The school’s newspaper called him “one of
the brightest stars of the class of 1998.” Fr. Frechette’s “golden
thread” led him back to Haiti, where he helped to establish a

thriving medical center. In 2003, he was appointed International
Medical Director for Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. In the fall of
2006, he opened a new hospital on ten acres of land in Port au
Prince with 150 beds, two emergency rooms, two operating
rooms, and a large intensive care unit. The hospital cares for
about 25,000 people per year and contains a large outpatient
clinic with all specialties of pediatrics, including HIV and cancer
centers.
As the audience at St. Joseph’s Cathedral sat transfixed by this
man’s message, one could not help but marvel at his peaceful
demeanor, which belied a store of boundless energy – an energy
that springs from the progress he has made for the people of
Haiti. As committed to education as he is to health care, Fr.
Frechette and his staff have opened small, one-room-style schoolhouses that now serve over 3,000 children. His new hospital will
also be the training center in pediatrics for the Catholic medical
and nursing school of Haiti.
In the face of immense odds, Fr. Frechette has persevered in his
mission to bring better health care, education, and a sense of
hope to the children of Haiti.
Fr. Frechette concluded his address by echoing a message the
graduates had heard many times during their years at Northwest
Catholic High School: to whom much is given, much is expected. He spoke to each member of the audience as if he was meeting with them one on one: “Our world is beautiful, but it is also
troubled and tormented. This is the world that is waiting for you.
The world needs you! It needs your enthusiasm, and your belief
that you can set things right.
“You are very blessed,” Fr. Frechette continued. “But your
blessing puts upon you a burden – to care for this very troubled
world. Heal it. Set it up right again. We need you. The world
needs you! May God bless you and help you to submit your head
to your heart so you may answer God’s invitation to you all
throughout your life.”
Because he is both priest and physician, Fr. Rick is able to
minister to the physical and spiritual needs of thousands of
people in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

woke up on the morning of my second birthday incredibly
excited to put on my Little Mermaid costume. It was clear
from my repeated exclamations of, “I’m a mermaid! I’m a
mermaid!” that there was no one else I would rather be. I’m sure
all of you can remember your own childhood heroes, whether it
was one of the Disney princesses or perhaps one of the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles. Either way, there was something about
these figures that made us want to grow up and be just like them.
I
As we have matured, not only have our role models changed,
but so have our ideas about what we want to be when we grow
up. Some of us might want to be as rich as Bill Gates, as famous
as Paris Hilton, or as athletic as Michael Jordan. In today’s society, these ideals of wealth, fame, and position are often how success
is defined for us. While all of these are noteworthy accomplishments, I do not think that these are the only standards by which
we should measure success. During my four years of high school,
I have encountered many people who in my opinion exemplify
success. None of them have been celebrities, millionaires, or
prominent figures. In fact, the successful people I have met are
ordinary people, who love what they are doing and find meaning
in their lives. Over time, they have become my new role models.
One place where I have met successful adults has been in the
classrooms of Northwest Catholic. My teachers have shown a
passion and love for teaching that goes beyond their subject matter. In Mrs. Gillespie’s ACTS class, I found myself eating a meal
with a family of Liberian refugees, leading a blind person around
the Westfarms Mall, and serving food at a soup kitchen during an
amazing five-day urban immersion. In American Mind class, Mr.
Shukie discussed how history repeats itself and helped us to draw
connections between the Vietnam War and the present-day war in
Iraq. I left that class with a much greater appreciation of how history applies to my life. And who other than Mrs. Metzler could
motivate exhausted high school students to be at school at 6:30 in
the morning to do calculus problems, and on top of that, get all
of the boys in her class to wear bright pink t-shirts? The teachers
at Northwest Catholic have shown me that they care not only
about how we develop academically, but also how we develop as
well-rounded people who are ready to contribute to society.
I have also met very successful people in the numerous
Thursday afternoons I have spent at the Catholic Worker House
in Hartford. There I found adults devoting their lives to others
and living in voluntary poverty. To some, this existence without
any wealth or status might seem to be the opposite of success, but
anyone who has spent time at the Catholic Worker knows better.
The Catholic Workers have shown me that one true measure of
success is how much you do for others.
But in the past year and a half, one particular person in my life
has risen to the top as one of the most successful people I know.
This person, my Uncle George, died just a few weeks ago of brain
cancer. If anyone lived life to the fullest, it was my uncle. He
delved whole-heartedly into his interests, which included reading,
mountain biking, cars, history, and spending time with family
and friends. The Uncle George I remember was constantly offering to bring my sisters and me to a museum, coming over to
watch a movie, or celebrating our birthdays with us. He measured his own success not by the amount of money he had, his job,
or the size of his house, but rather by how much he was enjoying
life. He was truly remarkable.

“Live with gratitude and enthusiasm”
would like to begin my speech with a wish for all of us here
today. My hope for all of us is to be like children. Not to
act childish, but to be child-like. I hope for us to be mature
in behavior but young at heart. Many people view graduation as
a time to grow up, a milestone that marks the end of high school
and the start of college, of living on your own, and becoming an
adult. However, I hope that at this important moment in our
lives we all can maintain some of our childlike qualities.
I
The first quality we are taught as children is to mind our manners. As children we are all taught to say please and thank you to
everyone, and to be gracious and grateful. As we grow older, we
begin to take the people and the events in our lives for granted.
In reality, we never could get through life alone. I believe that
these manners, which we are taught as children, should be carried
with us into adulthood. I challenge everyone to be like a child …
to say please and thank you to the cashier at the grocery store, to
the driver on the bus, to the attendant at the movie theater, and
to the waitress at a restaurant. Just say thank you to everyone who
does anything to improve your life. Do not take anyone for granted. I truly believe those two words, “Thank you,” have the power
to make someone’s day.
With these thoughts in mind, I believe that graduation should
be a time for all of us to say “thank you” to everyone who has
made this evening possible. First and foremost, we should thank
God for all of His special blessings. We should thank our friends
and classmates, our siblings and family, and especially our parents.
But also, thank you to all those people behind the scenes who
...Thank you to all those
“people

”
made our lives a little bit easier through our high school career:
the administration, faculty, and staff of Northwest Catholic, the
cafeteria ladies, the custodians, and the librarians. All of these people are what made Northwest Catholic truly memorable. None of
us would be here today, and I know I certainly would not be here
giving the salutatorian speech, if it were not for the efforts of all
of these people.
The next quality of a child that I hope we will retain into adulthood is enthusiasm. Children are enthusiastic about every task
they do. As teenagers and as adults, I think we begin to be less
excited about the little moments in life. We tend to just go through
the motions of everyday living. We go to school or work, complete
our tasks and go through all of the mundane details. But as children, everything that we do, we see as the greatest and most fun we
have ever had. To a child, nothing else matters but the activity they
are focused on at that moment. I saw this fact very clearly a few
months ago while volunteering.

My wife and I were seconds behind him. Because I am an
emergency medical technician (EMT), I knew I had to act fast.
Stopping in the breakdown lane just past the accident, I jumped
out and grabbed a medical bag I keep in the back of my truck.
A bystander was holding a blanket against the man’s chest. “I
think he has a sucking chest wound,” he said. I asked whether
he could see any of the man’s ribs and whether anything was
protruding from the wound; then, I applied pressure to the
man’s chest and told the bystander to continue holding pressure.
A police officer arrived; I asked him to radio the county’s

the country asks: “What is your name?” “Do you know where
you are?” “Can you tell me what happened?” “Can you tell me
what hurts?” I was assessing his level of consciousness, the quality of his circulation, whether his airway was open, whether he
had a pulse, and whether he had any uncontrolled bleeding. I
was trying to determine the extent of his injuries and whether
they were life threatening. He was dying.

ecently, Matt Fitzsimons asked my opinion about
whether, and how, students’ high school experiences prepare them for the future and influence their postgraduate choices. For me, the answer is unequivocal; in fact, it would
take many pages to enumerate all the ways that Northwest
Catholic has influenced me. But one thing stands out: that is,
that the point of our lives is not about simply pursuing achievement and attaining success; it is about stretching ourselves by
helping others. I learned this lesson over and over again at
Northwest Catholic, not only in my religion courses (where one
might expect it), but also in science labs, classrooms, clubs, and on the track, through the
words and deeds of teachers, coaches and fellow
students.
R
This notion of stretching oneself through service has coalesced for me into a personal philosophy
that I can easily attribute in part to studying
ancient Greek cultures in Dan Marcus’s English
class; history and society in John Shukie’s class; or
belief, faith and philosophy in Fr. Bock’s seminar.
And that philosophy is this: to properly attend to
ourselves, we must focus on developing our minds,
our bodies, and our spirit. It is not enough to do
one or two and not the others. Personal stability
and strength comes from crafting all three legs of
the human platform so that it will support the trials and challenges that come before us. To this day,
I try to do for myself what Northwest Catholic did
for me then: educate my mind, train my body, and
feed my soul.

with the experiences I have had: as a military officer, a management

These diverse experiences add richness and, I hope, stretch my

f we are the sum of our experiences and our decisions, then
surely some of our most enduring lessons occurred in our
adolescence. My first English teacher, Mary Fran Hennessy,
gave me the confidence and instruction I needed to become a
better writer. Toward the end of freshman year, she encouraged
me to sign up for the honors-level sophomore course. She knew
I could do it, but I lacked confidence. She believed in me when
I didn’t, convinced me I was capable and made a difference.
Carol Canora stimulated my interest in science by demanding
academic rigor – yet she tempered her high expectations with
genuine compassion. When I approached her about an experiment I’d read about to calculate the force of gravity, she encouraged me to reproduce the experiment in the physics lab on her
time. She stayed after school and gave me the run of the lab.
While I made my measurements, I felt like a colleague, another
discoverer of the wonders of the scientific world. And Mike
Griffin, in his role as track and field coach, helped me learn how
to lead. He would often toss me a stopwatch at the beginning
of practice, give me the training schedule for the afternoon and
entrust all the sprinters to me. I’m not sure that always worked
the way he planned; we were high school kids, after all, prone to
cutting corners whenever we could. But I had moments running alongside my friends, clutching the digital stopwatch,
when I really felt like I was leading the pack – a skill I would
come to rely on heavily as an Air Force officer.
I
Equal in importance to the roadmap laid out by adults at
Northwest Catholic were the interactions I had with my fellow
students. It is true that if you want to become a better runner,
you should run with those who are stronger and faster than you.
They will elevate you in a way no individualized training can.
When I saw my classmates achieve in the National Honor Society,
on the yearbook staff, in student government, on teams, and especially in the classrooms, I wanted to be like them. Although none
of us realized it at the time, they were my role models, allowing
me to see me in them and what I might be capable of doing.

J
ust then, I see familiar faces. One of the units from my
Squad has arrived. I feel a swell of relief as I call for a backboard, oxygen and trauma dressings and begin squeezing air
into my patient’s lungs. At the same time, other firefighters are
tearing off the car door so we can extricate the driver. He’s
about 270 pounds, and it takes six of us to get him on the backboard. I stabilize his traumatized arm as we sidestep over the
uneven ground to get to a nearby ambulance. The rear doors
close, the ambulance pulls away with lights and sirens blaring,
and it is over. As I peel off my latex gloves, I realize I am shaking uncontrollably. “Do you think he will make it?” the police
officer asks. “I don’t know,” I reply. He asks, “Do you think we
saved his life?” I pause to think. “I’m not sure, but I think we
made a difference.”
And that is what I have carried from days at Northwest
Catholic: strive constantly to improve yourself, to serve your fellow human beings, and, if you are able, to make a difference.

onday mornings are always busy at Northwest Catholic
– but even more so on the first Monday of the month.
That’s when, amid the normal hustle and bustle of a new school
week, the makings of a giant potluck supper miraculously appear
in the office of Campus Ministry Director Kristi Gillespie — the
literal and figurative home of Northwest Catholic’s myriad community service activities.
Mike Freund ’10 brings chocolate chip cookies (made with

Kate Williamson ’08 can always be counted on for brownies.
Michael Lathrop ’08 and his family are known for their outstanding cakes.
Kaela Paternoster ’09 and Erika Dueñas ‘10 pitch in with
tons of groceries and paper goods, cutlery and other supplies.
And other students take turns providing side dishes: noodles
with cheese sauce; frozen Italian mixed vegetables; tossed salad;
bread and real butter.
Meanwhile, at home over the weekend, Mrs. Gillespie and several of her colleagues – usually Claudia Hart and Mark Dodd –
prepare about 25-30 pounds of chicken breast, the foundation for
“Chicken Catalina,” Northwest Catholic’s signature entrée in the
multi-course meal that’s served to about 50 people at the Manna
Program soup kitchen at Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford.
“The longer I teach here, the more I realize that we all need to
do more to help others,” said Dodd, a science teacher, explaining
why he’s become a “Chicken Catalina” chef.
“The guests get very excited when they see us coming in with
the chicken – it’s a very popular dish,” said Mrs. Gillespie, her eyes

Williamson and Kim Bowen, whose son Dillon is a freshman).
And then there are the current students, of course.
“It does take time, but I have time to give,” said Michael
Lathrop.
Kim Bowen, parent of an NWC freshman, sits down to
supper with a Manna Program client.
Kaela Paternoster adds that, as someone who feels shy herself,
she can understand why a new volunteer might feel nervous or
unsure about participating. “I’ve been involved since freshman
year, and I still don’t know what to say when I get there!” she
admits with a sympathetic smile. “But they help you along. The
people there will ask you about yourself, and before you know it,
you are talking to people and you feel kind of like you made a
new friend.
“It’s one of those things where you just have to put yourself
outside your comfort zone,” she continued. “You definitely get
back two times as much as you put in.”
“I go to the soup kitchen because I have seen that there is a
need to provide this meal, and it is something I am capable of
doing,” said Ms. Hart, chairman of the Math Department.
“Problems like hunger seem so large and insurmountable, but in
a small way we can help this group of people.
“I also like seeing a different side of our students as we work
side-by-side rather than in a teacher-student relationship, “she
continued. “They show leadership and compassion in the work
they do.”
“Chocolate milk boy” Matt Masciocchi, a 6th-grade student
at St.Timothy Middle School, accompanies his dad Al to the
soup kitchen each month.
Her mother, Kathleen Hart (PP ‘72,’73,’74,’76,’78,’80,’82),
participates by helping to underwrite the cost of some of the
ingredients in the meal her daughter prepares. “She wanted to
be involved,” Ms. Hart said.
“Sam Dusza’s mom came to help out this summer, even
though Sam had just graduated,” Mrs. Gillespie said. “She said
she really just enjoyed the camaraderie of our group.”
Teresa Bournique ’84, who has returned to her alma mater as
a religion teacher this year, volunteered at the Manna Program
in August – just a month after she was hired, and before she’d
even met any of her students.
“How inspiring it was to receive my first impression of
Northwest Catholic High School students and parents in the
context of preparing and serving a soup kitchen meal!” said Mrs.
Bournique. “The joyful, humble, respectful, and efficient manner of the volunteers that night set the tone for my work in
teaching and campus ministry at NWC.”
Sophomore Erika Dueñas and math teacher Claudia Hart

the clients have been served.

President’s Letter
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
We wish to thank you for your support of our mission to educate the whole person in a dynamic educational environment that thrives in its diversity. With
your gifts of time, talent and treasure, you truly make a difference in the lives of the students we are privileged to serve.
Here at Northwest Catholic, we cherish the many intangible gifts you share with us; indeed, throughout this issue of Logos, we celebrate the myriad ways
that members of our community share their gifts with family, friends and others whom they meet in the world around them.
We also acknowledge the abundant “treasures” or financial gifts that we are blessed to receive, and we do so in the pages of this Annual Report.
Northwest Catholic relies on annual giving for 8% of the operating budget. Your generosity to the Northwest Catholic Fund, previously known as the
Annual Fund, has been inspiring to our community during the 2006-07 fiscal year: Gifts totaled $660,469, an increase of $84,321 (14.7%) from last year’s
total of $576,148. These gifts allow us to:
• Support and invigorate the caliber of the teaching essential to engaging students in the pursuit of knowledge;
• Ensure that financial aid remains at the heart of the school for students of need; and
• Perpetuate an environment that emphasizes academic excellence, faith in God and service to others.
We also depend upon the generosity of those who contribute toward our modest but growing endowment,
those who make directed gifts to capital projects that enhance our facilities, and those who give generously to
our financial aid fund. The school also posted capital and endowment gifts of $383,836 and $168,148,
respectively.
The result? Our Advancement program yielded a total of $1.261 million during this past fiscal year, representing not only donations to the Northwest Catholic Fund, capital projects, and the endowment, but also
gifts in kind and revenue from three special projects: the annual golf tournament, Saturday Night Live, and
the annual magazine drive.
All of us — students, faculty and staff — benefit from this generosity, as it enables us to continue to offer
the unique Northwest Catholic education in the manner that you all have come to expect. From the bottoms
of our hearts, thank you.
Just after the end of this past fiscal year, our Advancement department entered a period of transition. We
bade farewell to Linda Massaro, who had served so ably as our Director of Advancement for the past five years,
and to Assistant Director Caitlin Dowd and Advancement Assistant Debbie Kennedy.
We are delighted that our new team includes not only Colby Thresher, a stalwart NWC Advancement
Officer and promoter of our planned giving program, but also Jane Leary (AP ’05, ’07), our new Director
of Constituent Relations, who, like Colby, has deep and long-standing ties to the Northwest Catholic community. Debra LeBel, our new Advancement Assistant, is another integral member of our team.

the Northwest Catholic Endowment Fund. As a result, the
school grew tremendously, and today’s students continue to
enjoy the fruits of these programs.
Rev. Colton Society $10,000-$24,999
During his time at Northwest Catholic, Rev. Bradford
Colton, the first principal, was an exemplary leader, educator
and mentor to many students. He lived the mission of our
school with humbling grace and dedicated his life to educating others.
1961 Society $5,000-$9,999
Green & White Circle $2,500-$4,999
Every fan of Northwest Catholic knows that green and white
are as popular and as ubiquitous now as they were in 1961,
when they made their debut as our school colors.
Dominican Order Society $1,000-$2,499
In 1961, eight Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs
devoted their time and energy to educating the young minds
of Northwest Catholic students. Their guidance provided
the foundation for the growth and development of the student body.
Northwest Catholic opened its doors in 1961. Gifts from
the members of this society make a notable impact on the
growth and progression of our school and inspire others to
invest in its future.

established the Young Alumni Founders’ Circle Society. The Founders’ Circle has long been
the province of generous donors of $1,000 or more, but the YAFC gives young alums the

years they have been out of school. The members of the Young Alumni Founders’ Circle are
invited to the annual Founders’ Circle appreciation dinner.

Alumni Honor Roll of Donors
Alumni giving totals in each class year are reported in three ways. Participation rates indicate the number of donors in relation to the number of “active” members, i.e. alumni with deliverable addresses. Total Class Contribution reflects gifts made to the NWC Fund (formerly known
as the Annual Fund), along with gifts for capital or endowment purposes. The Annual Fund total represents gifts to the NWC Fund; these
gifts are vital to our operations and help to fulfill our mission.

The dedicated, fun-loving, and hardworking administrators, teachers, coaches, and staff members in the
Northwest Catholic community not only developed my
academic and athletic abilities, but they also instilled values such as the importance of good friendships, strong
communication skills, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. With this foundation, I was able to “give back”
to the community what was given to me.

Northwest Catholic instills a long-standing sense of community in its students. Its holistic approach to learning -- encouraging students to grow their minds, bodies and souls
alike -- prepares them to tackle personal and professional challenges arising throughout
their lives. The School’s ability to stimulate intellectual curiosity while also emphasizing
compassion for others benefits not just its students, but all of the communities in which
they interact. Northwest Catholic’s positive spirit is contagious and has blessed me with
my most cherished lifelong friendships. There is no greater compliment to any institution
than its outstanding capability to foster genuine kindness, lasting friendships and a true
sense of community in its students. Northwest Catholic High School has mastered this.

For some reason, perhaps it was divine providence, I knew in 8th grade I needed to attend
Northwest Catholic I grew up in the Elmwood section of West Hartford and the kids I was
hanging around with, let’s just say, were not on a great track educationally. Had I continued
on this track, well, I just can’t imagine where I’d be today. I knew I needed the discipline, academic rigor and the religious-based value system that Northwest Catholic had to offer.
Northwest Catholic truly changed my life. It prepared me for the academic challenges of
Wesleyan University and ultimately Harvard Business School. Whatever success I have
achieved, it was built on a foundation of a loving family, great friends, and the caring teachers
and demanding coaches of Northwest Catholic. I am very grateful to the School, and in my
heart, will forever be a Northwest Catholic Indian.

For me, Northwest Catholic was all about developing as a
student, as an athlete, and as a person. Northwest Catholic
more than made its mark on me in all three categories, and
I am very thankful. If you give your personal best there,
the benefits are endless and measurable…"Diversity" is a
word that gets thrown around in today's world far too
often, but at Northwest Catholic, diversity is truly at work.
The benefits and importance of learning and developing in
that atmosphere are hard to measure, but simply ask, hire
or spend some quality time with someone from
Northwest Catholic, and it becomes clear!

Attending Northwest Catholic was a tremendous opportunity and left a lasting impact on who I am today. The
school complemented and expanded on the work my parents did in raising me and preparing me for life. The
Northwest Catholic community and faculty reinforced my
value set and priorities while challenging me to reach my
full potential both academically and personally.

While Northwest Catholic offered a challenging academic environment that prepared
me well for college and professional life, the most important lessons were those I
learned about being a part of a community. Northwest provided a diverse school environment, enriching our lives with people of all races, ethnicities and economic backgrounds. We graduated with an appreciation for each person and the contribution they
make to our community and the understanding that we are responsible for helping
make our community a better place. These are life lessons not taught in a book, but
shown by example and demonstrated by faith.

Current Parent Honor Roll of Donors
Northwest Catholic is fortunate to receive considerable financial support each year from the parents of our students. Recognizing that tuition alone does not cover the cost
of a child’s education, many parents choose to make a gift to the Northwest Catholic Fund that helps subsidize the difference between the actual cost and the tuition. These
important gifts make it possible for us to maintain a reasonable tuition relative to other private schools. Additionally, parents support Northwest Catholic through other gifts
to endowment and capital projects. We are indeed grateful to these parents for the investment they have made in enhancing the education experience we are able to provide
the students we serve.

Faculty & Staff Honor Roll of Donors
The Northwest Catholic faculty, supported by administrators and staff, devote their time and energy to students’ intellectual, social, psychological, and
spiritual development. As the core members of the School’s learning community, the faculty is dedicated to the maintenance of a stimulating and enriching educational environment. While that dedication is most obvious in their attention and concern for students, it also appears in the generosity with
which faculty and staff support the School’s mission. Two members of the faculty – Paul Fitzpatrick and Joan Keating-McKeon – this year wrote a beautiful letter of invitation to their colleagues, inviting them to consider gifts to the annual fund; the letter read, in part; “We are truly blessed to work daily
in a vocation, rather than a job. Daily we are given the privilege of serving God’s children in imitation of the greatest teacher, Jesus. We are writing to
ask you to extend your generosity beyond the classroom … and consider making a gift that will be used to fund a student in need of financial assistance.”
As a result, six students received financial aid that would otherwise not have been available to them.

NORTHWEST CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT, 2006-07
30th Annual Golf Tournament
Torrential rain forced the first-ever postponement of the annual golf tournament from the originally scheduled date of June 4, 2007 to June 19, 2007.
Patient golfers were rewarded with a picture-perfect day at Wampanoag Country Club for the 30th annual event, which was named this year for Rev.
Bradford Colton, the school’s first principal. With Jim O’Toole ’78, CP as chair and Dan Filomeno CP as co-chair, the tournament grossed $39,980
and netted $19,434.57. The proceeds from this year’s tournament were used to help need-based students meet the costs of tuition, making Northwest
Catholic affordable to worthy students who might otherwise not have been able to attend.

Planned Giving at Northwest Catholic
T
he Heritage Society recognizes as members those alumni, parents and friends of Northwest Catholic who make a planned gift
to the School. Planned gifts include a provision in a will or trust; naming Northwest Catholic as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, pension, profit-sharing, IRA or 401(k) plan; establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity (see below) or Charitable
Remainder Trust. These gifts allow individuals to make an ultimate statement of commitment and will define future educational
opportunities for deserving students.
Charitable Gift Annuities
With an irrevocable gift of cash or securities of at least $10,000 to Northwest Catholic, a donor can:
•
lock in a high annual fixed rate of return for life;
•
benefit from a healthy charitable deduction;
•
reduce capital gains taxes, if it is a gift of appreciated securities; and
•
make a difference for Northwest Catholic!
Gift Annuity Rates Paid Annually to a Donor for Life
Age 70: 6.5%
Age 75: 7.1%
Age 80: 8.0%
Age 85: 9.5%

“I am pleased to have included Northwest Catholic in my estate plans because Northwest provided me with a life-changing
experience. Now, I feel fortunate to give something back to this wonderful school through a bequest that will offer young men
and women similar opportunities.”

Scholarship-Funding Opportunities
Over the past two decades, alumni parents and friends have chosen to honor an individual or family while helping students in financial
need by funding an endowed scholarship. A portion of the annual earnings ensures that needy students can take advantage of all the educational opportunities Northwest Catholic has to offer. Endowed scholarship funds are essential to the promotion of a diverse economic background and to Northwest Catholic’s tradition of supporting students of need. Endowed scholarships may be initiated with a gift of $25,000.
Annual scholarships may be established with a gift of $5,000 or more, provided it is the donor’s intent to make a long-term commitment.

Learning to Be Better Teachers
Imagine returning to class the day after school gets out?
Nine Northwest Catholic teachers were among two dozen
educators from the Hartford Archdiocese who just couldn’t stay
away after the 2006-07 school year ended. That’s partly because
a seminar created by a Harvard professor was luring them back.
Laura Porter, an educational consultant with a firm called
Research for Better Teachers, conducted the workshop titled
“The Skillful Teacher: Building Your Teaching Skills” on the
Northwest Catholic campus from June 20-22. Emphasizing collegiality and experimentation, the seminar offered a number of
instructional strategies, as well as new ways to observe and support peers.
The teachers who attended the workshop were Madonna Burke,
Chris Gallagher, Claudia Hart, Patti Juda, Joan Keating-McKeon,
Deb Metzler, Jeffrey Sutherland, Marisa Varney, and Dave
Woodford.

Not bad for its first year in existence! Syncopate, the Northwest
Catholic High School Dance Team led by moderator Kerri

Olympus National competition in Las Vegas this past July.
Having qualified for nationals at the regional competition in
Boston,, the team went on to compete in two categories – and
won in both.

“Take It To The Floor,” a group hip-hop number, captured second place in the Intermediate Large Group Hip-Hop category,
while “Break It Down,” an original breakdance/acro routine
featuring three students, won first place in their category as
well as the title National Champions. Smith said she expects
the team to grow this year, and she intends to have the dancers
compete in Boston and at the 2008 National Finals in Orlando.
That’s a lot of cookies! Brandon Marshall ’08, inspired by
Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly to fund the purchase of
mosquito nets to help combat malaria in Africa, raised $1,210
by selling baked goods last spring (here to Patrice Hubert
’08). That was enough to buy 121 nets. Brandon plans to hold
more bake sales this year for his “Nothing but Nets” project,
and is “shooting” to beat his own fundraising record.

BY JOHN SHUKIE, RETIRED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
What a spring! Despite what sometimes
seemed to be endless rain, the Northwest
Catholic athletes turned in one of the finest
competitive seasons in school history.
Baseball
The baseball team (21-3 overall) led the
way by rewriting our record books. They
set a school record for wins and posted our
first Northwest Conference baseball championship with a perfect 16-0 league record.
Senior pitchers Jack Wagoner (6-0) and
Kyle Sumple (7-0) were named to the AllConference Team; Jack was also selected as
All-State. Behind the plate, senior catcher
Mike Bourdon was a rock, demonstrating
outstanding defense and a superior and
intimidating arm. With a .394 batting average, Michael was also named both AllConference and All-State. Senior shortstop
Rob Dornfried (.418, 37 runs, 5 home
runs, 24 RBI), junior leftfielder Tony Blake
(.394, 32 runs, 19 RBI), and freshman centerfielder Tom Bourdon (.424, 21 runs, 16
RBI), were selected for the All-Conference
team, as well. Jack Wagoner was the team
MVP, and Mike Bourdon received the
Coaches’ Award.
In the Class S, state tournament the
Indians were seeded number 2 and received
a first-round bye. Playing at home in round
2, the boys beat Cromwell High 11-5, with
Kyle Sumple getting the victory. In Bristol
for the quarterfinals, Coach Carlson and his
band squeezed out a 2-1 nail-biter over
Shepaug on a Jack Wagoner one-hitter.
Mike Bourdon won the game with a walkoff, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the
seventh. At the state semifinals at Muzzy
Field, Kyle and Jack combined forces to put
Northwest Catholic in the state championship, beating defending State Champs
Windsor Locks, 6-4.
dedicated crowd of Northwest fans was on
hand. The Indians came up just a little
short, dropping the game 6-4 to St.
Bernard’s and finishing as Class S state runner-up. Congratulations to Coach Carlson
and his expert staff on leading the boys
through such a grand season. The team finished the season at 7th overall in the state in
the Hartford Courant poll — our highest
ranking ever.
Yale Field – and the Indians – were ready
on Saturday, June 9, despite a rainy morning. Northwest Catholic had not been in
the baseball state final since 1965, and a
Two days after graduation, catcher Michael
Bourdon was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in
the 41st round of the amateur player draft; he is
believed to be the first Northwest Catholic athlete to hold this distinction. An excellent threesport athlete (football, basketball, baseball), Mike
is now a freshman at Fairfield University, where
he received a scholarship to play baseball.
Dear Northwest Catholic Family,
It has been my great pleasure to have had the opportunity to collect and write these “sports notes” for many
years. Athletics is part of the glue that holds the Northwest Catholic community together, and I have been most
proud to record and pass on to all of you the great accomplishments of our teams and athletes. For 31 wonderful years, I have watched as our young men and women competed and brought great honor and recognition to
our school. Banners fill the gym and our trophy cases are full to overflowing, but there has been so much more
to Northwest Catholic athletics than victories and championships.
Retired Athletic
Director John Shukie
As a coach and an athletic director, I have been witness to the growth of individuals in mind, body, and spirit. I
have watched friendships form that have lasted for lifetimes. I have seen lessons learned that have transcended
the playing fields and the gym and have been carried on into careers and family life. I have seen sacrifices made
by competitors, coaches, and parents all in such an unselfish and generous manner that I get emotional just thinking about them. My life has been truly blessed to have been part of this.
I want to thank all of you for making Northwest Catholic part of your lives. There is truly no other place like it anywhere. It is my hope
and intention to stay involved with our school, and I hope you will do so, as well. Perhaps I will see you at a game, the Hall of Fame banquet, the Golf Tournament, or Saturday Night Live. We can talk over old times and share a few memories of fun and glory passed, or we can
catch up on what’s new in our lives and at Northwest Catholic.
May God keep you all safe,

Golf
Coach Scott Fletcher and his golf team
turned in an equally stellar season: their
regular-season record was 21-10-1, and they
finished third in the Northwest Conference.
The squad was led by junior Keith
Kwasnik, averaging just over 36 strokes for
9 holes during the regular season; he was the
team MVP and was named to the AllConference team.
Sophomore Matt
Collins and freshman Brendan Lemp
joined Keith on the All-Conference team.
Senior captain Kevin Bonney won the
Coaches’ Award. Seeded first for the Class
S championship at Blue Fox Run in Avon,
the boys made a gutsy showing, finishing as
state runner-up to second-seeded
Housatonic Valley Regional High School by
five strokes overall (317-322). Keith
Kwasnik (who shot 76 for the 18 holes) won
All-State honors. Kevin Bonney and Matt
Collins each shot 81.
Lacrosse
The boys’ lacrosse team finished the regular season at 13-3, good enough to be seeded
fifth in the Class S state tournament. Senior
Joe Ludlow led the team with 71 points
overall, while brother Mike Ludlow led the
squad with 31 goals. Senior Mike Boya
scored 28 times and junior Chris Kevorkian
20.
Defense, however, became the
Northwest Catholic trademark, as junior
goalie Joe Buda recorded 206 saves, and a
group of stalwart defensemen — including
seniors Chris Knortz and Sean Leary and
junior Kevin Eagan — protected him. Mike
Boya, Sean Leary, and Mike Ludlow were
named second-team All-Staters, Chris
Knortz was the MVP, and senior Tim
Murphy received the Coaches’Award. In the
Class S state tournament, Coach Chris
Gallagher’s boys easily took Valley Regional
High School 11-3, but fell 14-3 in the quarterfinals to fourth seed New Fairfield on
graduation afternoon.
Northwest Catholic’s athletic program was named the 2nd place winner of the Michaels
Achievement Cup for Class SS, based on its success in the 2005-06 season. This was
the fifth year in a row that Northwest Catholic finished in the top three in the state
in its class. The award – which is based on a school’s won/loss record, the strength of
its program offerings, and student participation — was presented on April 22 at the
Gold Key Dinner of the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance.
Senior Brittany Massaro won the Brian Piccolo Award and scholarship from the
Greater Hartford UNICO. Overcoming a serious ankle injury, Brittany became a twotime,All-State athlete in lacrosse. She is a freshman at Springfield College.

LOGOS
Under the guidance of coaches Jill and
Bill Mullady, girls’ lacrosse finished the regular season at 10-6, after getting off to a
slow start with a young squad (there were
only two seniors on the team). The one-two
punch of senior Brittany Massaro and junior Ashley Mara accounted for 111 of the
team’s 162 goals. Brittany was named MVP
and was a second team All-Stater; Ashley
was chosen for the All-State first team.
Junior Kelsey Cahalan won the Coaches’
Award, sophomore Kayleigh Donnelly
contributed 19 goals, and freshman
Bridget Daly made 132 saves in goal. In
the Class II state tournament the girls beat
the eighth-seeded Pomperaug High School
in Southbury by a score of 10-7 triumph,
but then lost 11-6 to the number-oneranked Stonington. Fifteen varsity letter
winners will return next year.

Boys’ track improved markedly over last

Brendan Jasper did likewise in the shot
put. Mike was named the team MVP, with
junior sprinter Manny Simpini taking
home the Coaches’ Award. Returning
coach Jeff Przech has much to look forward
to with young athletes on both teams.
The softball team’s 3-17 record was
deceiving, as the girls battled hard and were
very competitive throughout the season.
Senior Veronica Marquis was excellent in
centerfield and led the team with a .347 batting and 18 RBIs, winning MVP honors.
She was also selected to the All-Conference
team.
Fellow senior and co-captain
Kathleen Spignesi won the Coaches’
Award. Sophomore Nina Varney pitched
109 innings, recorded 101 strikeouts, and
had three shutouts.
Track
The girls’ track team turned in a stellar 71 season, finishing second in the Northwest

took first place in the 100- and 300-meter
hurdles, breaking a school record in the 300
that had stood since 1979. Teaming with
juniors Kristina Krupa, Ashley Gostyla,
and Ida Cance, Jacquie was also part of the
4x400-meter relay team that placed first.
Ida Cance was first in the high jump, while
junior Tiffany Hyde and senior Camille

with freshman Jenniqua Bailey to place
second in the 4x100 relay. All of these girls

Megan Clark won the Coaches’ Award.

Heard on NPR: Catie Talarski ‘99
Recent Northwest Catholic alums who are fans of
Connecticut Public Radio may have done an aural double take
recently: Did that reporter say her name was Catie Talarski? Is that
OUR Catie Talarski?
The answer is, yes! Catie Talarski, who graduated from
Northwest Catholic in 1999 and with a sociology degree from
Assumption College in 2003, is now a producer for “Where
We Live,” a daily morning news talk show on WNPR. She also
researches and reports stories about health care issues facing
Connecticut’s underserved, immigrant, and refugee communities. Her work has aired on “Here and Now,” “Day to Day,”
NPR’s podcasts, and on other NPR affiliate stations.
Considering where she’s been and what she’s done over the
past eight years, this seems like the most logical possible place
for Catie to be.
56
LOGOS
After college, she served with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in
Sacramento, CA (which she chronicled in a past edition of
Northwest Catholic NOW). A subsequent job at Boston
Children’s Hospital led Catie indirectly to Nepal, accompanying
young U.S. resident doctors to a Himalayan clinic where she
did research and passed out free vitamins and medicine. “We
then trekked from Lukla, Nepal, to the Everest Base Camp in a
little over a week, reaching about 18,000 feet,” she said.“It was
one of the most incredible experiences – I am very lucky to
have been able to have that experience.”
Back home in the States, Catie attended the Salt Institute for
Documentary Studies in Portland, ME, in the spring of 2006,
where she studied documentary radio and produced two documentaries: “The Maine Squeeze,” about an accordion band,
and another about a group of homeless teens putting on a play
about their life experiences. She’s been working full time at
NPR in Connecticut since January.

FIVE ALUMS INDUCTED INTO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Five people were inducted into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame on a beautiful evening in September (from left): Dennis
Robinson ’75; Mary Cobb Gothers ’80; Richard Fairbrother ’70; Elizabeth McNulty Alquist ’87; and William Mullady ’66.
ack in the day, they were Northwest Catholic superstars
– each in his or her own era, each for his or her own
sports. On Sept. 15, five outstanding alumni athletes
were recognized for their tremendous achievements by being
inducted into their alma mater’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame.
B
Richard Fairbrother, DMD ’70 of West Hartford: Named an
All-State basketball player and Athlete of the Year as a senior,
Fairbrother hit the 1,000-point mark at both Northwest
Catholic and at Wesleyan University. He was an Academic AllAmerican at Wesleyan in 1974.
The ceremony was held during a lovely reception and dinner
in Stosuy Gymnasium. Each new member was presented for
induction by another Northwest Catholic alumni athlete, who
recounted highlights of the honoree’s career. Athletic Director
Joshua Reese ’95 and Liz Stafford ’00, chairman of the NWC
Alumni Council, welcomed each person with congratulations
and two plaques – one that will be permanently mounted on the
Wall of Honor outside the Stosuy Gym, and one that went
home with the honoree.
Dennis Robinson ’75 of Ridgewood, N.J.: Another alumnus of
Wesleyan University, Robinson was the first 1,000-yard rusher
in Northwest Catholic football history. He was an All-State
Honorable Mention in 1973 and earned All-HCC honors in
football in 1974. At Wesleyan, he set six school records and led
the nation in average yards per punt return in 1978.
“Today’s Northwest Catholic athletes must thank each of you
for your accomplishments on our athletic fields,” said Reese.
“You led the way toward a path of success and are part of the reason we have such a rich athletic tradition.”
Comprising only the third group of athletes to be voted into
the Hall of Fame, this year’s inductees were:
William Mullady ’66 of Bloomfield: Mullady was AllConference in basketball and baseball, played on the state runner-up baseball team in 1965, and won the Northwest Catholic
Athlete of the Year award in 1966. He’s currently the assistant
coach (with his daughter, head coach Jill Mullady) of the
Northwest Catholic Girls’ field hockey and lacrosse teams.
Mary Cobb Gothers ’80 of Wethersfield: Gothers was the first
female to receive a partial scholarship to Boston College for
track and cross country. At Northwest Catholic, she was the
Class M cross-country state champion in 1978 and the Class M
2-mile state championship in 1980. She has coached high
school cross country and track at Conard, Farmington, and
Northwest Catholic.
Elizabeth McNulty Alquist ’87 of West Hartford: Alquist
earned All-HCC and All-State honors for basketball in both her
junior and senior years — and was All-HCC in soccer, as well,
during the same time frame. She was a basketball Academic All
American during her senior year at Mount Saint Mary’s College.
She now coaches in the West Hartford Girls’ Basketball League.
