NL 7 - 2015 - Parade College
No. 7
29 April 2015
From the Principal
Last Friday we held a school commemoration service to
mark ANZAC Day. We remembered all Australians and
New Zealanders and allies who have undertaken military
service in the defence of freedom over the last century,
especially those who gave their lives in the cause. We
remembered especially the Old Paradians who served their
country and the liturgy included prayers for peace in our
world.
On Wednesday last week before the First XVIII Football
game on Garvey Oval, we enjoyed a luncheon in the
Pavilion. We welcomed two groups: the Old Paradian
Vietnam Veterans and the “class of 1965” for their 50 year
reunion. The address was given by Michael O’Meara, Old
Paradian and long-serving senior officer in the Department
of Veterans Affairs.
Last week the EREA Charter Review took place and thanks
to the many staff, students and parents who met with the
review panel. We received very positive feedback from the
panel and a strong endorsement of our efforts to operate in
fidelity to the Charter.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of the musical All Shook
Up which concluded the season last Saturday. The audiences
were delighted with the students’ polished acting and song and
dance routines. Well done to the staff who gave many hours to
the rehearsals and helped create such an entertaining and
professional show.
The Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC) Art and Technology
Exhibition is open from Monday 27 April to Sunday 10 May at
the Abbotsford Convent and features works by Parade

House Reports
Hughes House Report
As it was reported in the last College Newsletter, Hughes again held a highly successful bake sale raising funds for Caritas
Australia and we thank parents and students for their support. The bake sale was, however, just one of many events of an
extremely energetic start to the year in Hughes House.
Our House Captain, Nickolas Karavias, highlighted just how involved our House has been in his Term 1 written address and
thank you. Nick made specific mention of the successes of the Hughes Celebration Day and the Year 7 and 8 Athletics
Carnival. At the time of writing, it was unclear as to which House had won the Treacy Cup points for the Project Compassion
fund raising competition. We can now report with great pride that Hughes House clearly raised the most funds in support of
Caritas Australia with H03 raising over $1000. The House spirit is clearly evident in such acts of generosity.
At our most recent meeting, Nick further highlighted Hughes student involvement in a range of programs including the Year 7
Camp, Blood Bank donations, the Battle of the Bands competition, the College Musical, Debating and St Albans tutoring.
We trust that the recent Easter holidays provided sufficient time for rest and reflection and we are well prepared to continue
our efforts in Term 2. A quiet moment is a rare thing in Hughes House as last week we participated in our House Mass which
focussed on our theme of ‘Fullness of Learning - Fullness of Life’. We are now preparing for our Edmund Rice House liturgies
this Friday and the Founder’s Fortnight activities to follow. Specific to Hughes House, we will be coordinating lunchtime
bands, jaffle cooks and continuing with the inaugural ‘Providence Cup’ downball competition - named in honour and support
of our House charity, Providence (Edmund Rice) School Shillong, India. Mr Williams, Hughes Lower House Leader, and I
have had the privilege of visiting and working with the students of Providence and have been amazed by the dedication of
the staff and the rewards of their work. We ask our students and families to support this wonderful cause where possible.
We look forward to another fantastic, hard working, yet rewarding term.

Takada Exchange
Program 2015
Genki’s Speech
Konnichiwa or should I say, “G’day mate!”
My name is Genki Shiraki. On behalf of Takada High
School, I want to thank everyone at Parade College and
On Wednesday 25 March we said a very emotional
‘sayonara’ to our visitors form Takada High School in
Japan. Takada High School is our Japanese sister
school and this year marks the 21st year of its visit to
Parade College.
This year we had 18 students and two teachers visit the
College and stay with various families who volunteered
their time and tourism tactics in an effort to make their
trip a memorable one. Our visitors were here for a total
of eleven nights and then flew to Sydney to conclude
their trip to Australia.
During their visit they saw many famous Melbourne
sights such as Ocean Grove where they learnt to surf,
Sovereign Hill, Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne city
and the Queen Victoria Market just to name a few. Even
though their suitcases will be a little heavier on their
return to Japan, they will also be taking with them many
memories and new friendships that will continue to last a
lifetime.
Thank you immensely to all of the families and Parade
students who volunteered to be part of our Takada
Exchange Program this year.
If you think you may like to host or travel to Japan in the
future, please feel free to contact me at any stage to
express interest via [email protected]
Mrs Lisa Briant
Learning Area Leader LOTE
our host brothers and host families for taking care of us
these two weeks.
Before coming to Australia, I believed Australia to be a
beautiful country with kangaroos, wide open spaces and
clear blue seas. I also imagined Australia as a land of
friendly people really enjoying their lives. All my beliefs
were true. Compared to the Japanese, who are shy, I
learned from you during my stay that we need to be
more open to people and ideas.
We have met some amazing people here. Our host
families and teachers at Parade College have gone out
of their way to make us feel welcome. The students at
Parade were always kind to us. We had amazing
experiences which will stay in our hearts forever.
One of the reasons we came to Australia is to learn
English. You are all our wonderful teachers. But I think
this exchange program between Parade and Takada
goes beyond English or Japanese language.

Food for All
The large group of poor were served plain rice and water,
while the middle class could add beans. The small group
of rich had a lavish three course meal. The students could
see that what they were experiencing reflected how the
world operates and got a small taste of the frustration and
unfairness of this.
The Advocacy Team’s theme for term one was ‘Food for All’.
Project Compassion prompted us to ask why one million

The idea of having a meal and then paying what you feel it
was worth or what you can financially afford sounds quite
strange in our competitive world, but it has been hugely
successful, creating community and encouraging a sense of
dignity in workers and guests alike.
We asked ourselves how the world would be different if the
Lentil as Anything values of human dignity, justice, hope,
compassion and community were shared by all businesses.
Far fewer people would be going to be hungry, that’s for
sure!

as “poor” people, some on chairs in the “middle”, and some
on beautifully set up tables as the “rich”.

Science Club
Science Club ran for the first time last year during Science
Week and, due to its popularity, became a bi-monthly
gathering of students who designed and ran their own
“MythBusters”-style experiments and observed fascinating
scientific demonstrations. In other words, they had fun
doing experiments they wouldn’t ordinarily have been able
to participate in due to their age, or the scale or
complexity of the experiment.
There has been much demand during Term 1 of 2015 for
Science Club to return, and so it has, with our first
meeting on Thursday 23 April in which students created
their own Acid/Base indicator, and tested various
substances for acidity.
All students are welcome to join Science Club, and there
are no prerequisites for taking part, except a desire to
have fun! Students do not have to write up reports, but
instead suggest their own experiments that they would like
to do (within reason – although we like idea of creating
massive fire-balls, it may raise OH&S issues!), and all
materials and apparatus are supplied by the College. We
especially encourage junior students from Year 7 to
participate as they will be involved in experiments not
undertaken until much later in their scientific studies at
Parade College.
Science Club runs every second Thursday (beginning
23/04/2015) in E35 at lunch time.
