OCTOBER 2014
Happy 60th Anniversary, DCTR!
Nearly 100 past and current members and guests gathered at the DCTR Clubhouse on September 27 to celebrate
60 years of horse activities and fellowship. The redecorated Clubhouse and new Arena fence and footing were
clear evidence that the organization is going strong and is well-positioned for another 60 years of serving horse
lovers in Douglas and surrounding counties. Special guests included founding members Bud Nation and Bill
and Lucy Rice, who shared their memories and perspectives on the club’s roots.
Current president Bonnie Kerns welcomed attendees and reviewed recent accomplishments. Jennifer Livingood
recognized the individuals and organizations that have donated to support the arena renovation. A permanent
plaque acknowledging their support will be placed on display in the near future. (Contributions are still being
accepted – see the Adopt-An-Arena flyer later in this newsletter.)
Attendees enjoyed a bounteous meal consisting of brisket, pulled pork and smoked chicken, plus cheesy
potatoes, coleslaw and other sides and desserts provided by members. A 60 th Anniversary cake and ice cream
topped off the meal. Plenty of conversation and laughter followed, both in the clubhouse and outside around
tables and a bonfire.
Special thanks to DCTR Officers and Board members who planned the event, cleaned and decorated the
clubhouse, mowed and set up for the party, and to the Springers for feeding us so well! Photos inside.

DCTR “Represents” at Area Parades
Riding in local parades isn’t just fun, it raises awareness of DCTR and is a great recruiting tool! Members have
been representing DCTR at parades all year, most recently at the Wellsville Days Parade on September 27 and
the Baldwin City Maple Leaf Parade on October 18. The club will ride in the Lawrence Old Fashioned
Christmas Parade on December 6. If you and your horse are not yet parade certified, watch for the next
Despooking Clinic and Parade Certification so you can join the fun!

Trail Riders Hit the Trails!
Eight riders enjoyed the September weather during the DCTR Clinton Lake Trail Ride September 20-21.
Lunches were packed in and enjoyed on the trails. Wildlife was abundant, with white pelicans, bald eagles,
great herons, wild turkeys and deer seen by the riders. Also a few spiders cleared from the trails. Four riders
braved the pending storm (which did not arrive) to spend the night and enjoyed a sunset ride by the lake.
Several members took advantage of the beautiful fall weather by participating in a “flash ride” on October 26 at
Clinton Lake. Watch for next year's scheduled and “flash” rides and join us for more trail riding fun.
