Although coach Rod Hill returns a number of golfers with varsity experience, the Keota girls have just one golfer who competed at SICLs last year returning to the fold. That one girl is Elise Swanstrom, who came through with a score of 167 at the conference meet as a sophomore. Swanstrom’s best 9-hole round last season was a 67. The team’s top returner, who was unable to compete last year at SICLs, is senior Grace Shemanski. Shemanski has come on strong late in the past two seasons, including shooting an impressive season-best round of 50 last year. The senior looks to be the team’s Number 1 this year, with her 9-hole average KEOTA BOYS GOLF-Front row (left to right): Anthony Campbell, Zach Mousel, Cole Stout; Back row: Jacob Moeller, Jonny Flanegan, Kolton Strand, Riley Conrad, Jack Eakins, Matthew Hyman. Only two of the team’s three participants from last season return to the oval this year, yet an influx of five newcomers this spring will make the Lady Eagles much better off than a year ago. Head coach Dan Stout welcomes back returning letter winners Erin Chalupa and Wynonna Morris. Chalupa was the team’s top performer a year ago, placing 10th at the South Iowa Cedar League Conference Meet in the long jump, 14th in the 100-meter dash and 17th in the 200-meter dash. As a sophomore, Chalupa’s best 100, 200 and 400 times were 14.75 seconds, 35.40 seconds and 1:16, respectively. Erin will look to improve on her 2015 marks, as well as play a big part in the team’s sprint relays. Meanwhile, Morris will look to be the team’s top-dog in the middle distance events. Although Morris is capable, and has past experience in sprint events, the sophomore will make her mark at the middle distances. Morris ran a season best 400-meter dash time of 1:22 last season, to go along with her personal-best time of 35.40 in the 200-meter dash. The sophomore also has experience throwing the discus, with her best mark of 2015 coming at a distance of 58’8’’. The team’s five newcomers, for the most part, will excel at the short distances. Freshmen Brianna Duwa and MaCayla Schweitzer will look to plug into Keota’s 4x100 and 4x200 relays; two events that the Lady Eagles weren’t able to compete in a year ago. Jolee Walker will also be in the mix in Keota’s sprint and middle distance relay events, with Jill Schulte doing the same. Schulte, a freshman, appears poised to make some noise in the hurdle events, as she placed 23rd out of 31 runners in the 60-meter hurdles at the SICL Indoor in Grinnell. Also, look for Carley Jaeger to compete at the short distances as well as the throwing events. Good Luck To All The Keokuk County Athletes! We’re Looking Forward To Your Great Seasons. The Eagles return a number of high caliber sprinters, distance runners and field athletes, but they also have some big question mark. A State qualifier in three events last year as a junior, Nate Sieren is back for the Eagles, but it’s unclear how he’ll perform after suffering a broken leg midway through Sigourney-Keota’s football season. Should Sieren return to near 100-percent by the end of the season, Keota would have more than one formidable threat in the sprint events. Sieren placed fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100 and SICLs last spring, before, finishing 11th in the 100 (11.40 seconds) and 21st in the 200 (23.72) at the State Meet. Sieren was also a part of Keota’s Statequalifying 4x200, which consisted of Sieren, Luke Greiner, Jacob Wickenkamp and Ben Horras. Now, without Wickenkamp and Horras, the Eagles won’t be likely to match last year’s 11th-place State finish in the 4x200. Sophomore Luke Greiner is back in the fold after running season-best times of 12.81 sec- KEOTA BOYS TRACK-Front row (left to right): Luke Greiner, Isaiah Hahn, Cole Brenneman, Dylan Bergdorf, Jason Ree; Middle row: Nate Sieren, Zach Mousel, Alex Heisdorffer, Branden Hyman, June Welt Daing; Back row: Logan Sieren, Turner Klein, Ben Shemanski, Trey Carlson; Not pictured: Tristan Sypherd, Jace Uphold. onds and 25.24 seconds in the 100 and 200, respectively. Greiner is also the team’s top-returning long jumper, with a mark of 18’ 3.5’’ inches last season. Look for senior Zach Mousel to fill in for the Eagles in the sprint relays. As a junior, Mousel ran mostly 400s, but should slide in nicely to the team’s sprint crew, as should Isaiah Hahn. With a depleted sprint crew, the Eagles are counting on Hahn to convert from running 800s and 1,600s, to running shorter distances. Sophomores Turner Klein and Logan Sieren will highlight the team’s distance crew this season. After turning in impressive freshman seasons in cross country and track, the duo will lead the Eagles in the distance events. Sieren is the team’s top returner in the 800, running a 2:27 last spring, while Klein’s season best from last year was 2:27 in the 800 and 5:09 in the mile. Dylan Burgdorf will also play a hand in the middle and long distances for Keota, while Jason Ree is back and looking to improve on his hurdle time of 17.6 seconds in the 110 highs, and 1:14 in the 400 lows. In the throwing events, Alex Heisdorffer and Dakota Slaughter will lead Keota’s attack. In 2015, Heisdorffer came through with the team’s best discus mark, at 85’ 3’’, while Slaughter had the top shot put mark, at 32’ 9’’. The SICL Conference Meet is scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, at BGM High School. Good Luck To All Keokuk Co. Sports Teams! We Wish Sigourney And Area Teams A Great Season! Seniors Jordan Albert and Peyton Crawford, and junior Bryce Goldman all return to the fold after running as part of Sigourney’s State-qualifying 4x100 and 4x200 relays, which each set school records a year ago. Look for freshman Carson Crawford and junior Ben Appleget to compete for the final spot in the team’s two sprint relays. Along with being members of the 4x100 and 4x200, Albert and Goldman each find themselves on the fringe of qualifying as individuals for State. Albert’s best event comes in the 100-meter dash, which he ran a season best time SIGOURNEY BOYS TRACK-Front row (left to right): Will Flanegin, Will Magill, Bryce Goldman, Luke House, Ben Appleget, Spencer Magill; Middle row: Cale Jarmes, Tristan Bell, Kaleb Reeves, Aaron Michael, Peyton Crawford, Noah Schuster, Jordan Albert; Back row: Bryce Waechter, Bryson Smothers, Carson Crawford, Mac Conrad; Not pictured: Nick Ives, Kyle Weber, Tyler Crawford, Tanner Bos, Tommy Stout, Sebastian Arduser, Greg Gott. of 11.63 seconds last season, while his 23.89 time in the 200 also puts him in contention for qualify. As a sophomore, Goldman rattled off a personal-best jump of 20’ 1.5’’, which may just be enough to get to Des Moines this year. In the distance events, Tyler Crawford, Will Flanegin, Luke House and Aaron Michael, along with Tommy Stout, will headline the Savages, with Crawford’s 1,600 time of 5:00 being the most impressive mark of the bunch. Also look for Nick Ives to make a splash, after enrolling at Sigourney (from Keota) in the fall. In the hurdle events, the Magill brothers of Will and Spencer will be the ones to watch on the team. Will, a junior, will push to improve on his times last year of 18.02 seconds in the 110 highs, and 1:08 in the 400 lows. Spring Sports | Wednesday, April 13, 2016 Speed is the key for Sigourney girls 7 By Adam Meier Regional Sports Editor SIGOURNEY GIRLS VARSITY TRACK & FIELD Head coach: Jeni Harter After qualifying for State in three events last season, and placing seventh in one of them, the Sigourney girls are back for more and they have speed to burn. Back again are the four girls who made up Sigourney’s Statequalifying shuttle hurdle relay from a year ago: Allison Schroeder, Sarina Gretter, Leah Carter and Autum Barthelman. Those four will be poised to improve on last year’s State performance, when they were disqualified for leaving an exchange zone early. The crew’s fastest time a year ago was 1:11.72, which would have put them in 13th place in last year’s Class 1A prelims. Running the anchor leg in the relay will be sophomore Autum Barthelman, who was last year’s SICL Champion in the 100-meter low hurdles and seventh-place finisher at State in the 100-meter dash –- an event which the winner (Maschmann, Montezuma) and fourth-place finisher (Kriegel, SIGOURNEY GIRLS TRACK-Front row (left to right): Savhannah White, Summer Barthelman, Megan Montgomery, Victoria Bechert; Back row: Jasmine Abell, Ryleigh Leonard, Autum Barthelman, Brooke Waechter, Leah Carter, Sloane Magill; Not pictured: Paige Thompson, Allison Schroeder, Sarina Gretter, Macie Leonard, Madysen Leonard, Sam Bird. In addition to the Barthelman sisters, the Savages bring back senior Victoria Bechert and sophomore Brooke Waechter, along with freshmen sprinters Savahannah White, Ryleigh Leonard and Good Luck To All Area Sports Teams Sloane Magill. Magill is also adept in the hurdle events and will do her best to push Sigourney’s talented group of hurdlers. In the distance events, Megan Montgomery, Jasmine Abell and Paige Thompson will headline the group for Coach Harter, as they should do nothing but improve throughout the spring. The duo of Summer Barthelman and Sloane Magill will be two of the team’s primary field event athletes, with Barthelman doing the long jump and Magill throwing the shot put. Leah Carter will also be back to try her hand in the high jump and Sam Bird looks to improve in the throwing events, as well. Sisters Macie and Madysen Leonard will join in the action for the Savages as well, hoping to give the team a life in time for the SICL Conference Meet on Tuesday, May 3, at BGM. The District Meet will be held on Thursday, May 12, at a site to be determined. GOOD LUCK Area Athletes! Wishing You All Great Seasons! Savage golf keen on postseason success By Adam Meier Regional Sports Editor SIGOURNEY VARSITY GOLF Head coach: Lee Crawford A 2015 season littered with success has caused a rise in expectations this spring for the Sigourney varsity golf team. Now under the watch of coach Lee Crawford, the Savages are returning a wealth of talent, while welcoming in a new group of freshmen at the same time. Broadway Keota, IA 641-636-3888 Redlinger are the veteran leads for the girls’ squad, but junior Kendall Streigle might just be the best of the bunch. As a sophomore, Streigle finished fourth overall at the SICL Meet with an 18-hole round of 98. During the entirety of the 2015 season, Streigle’s best nine-hole round was 43 –- two strokes better than Mohr’s. Although no Savage was better last year than Streigle, perhaps no one was more consistent than Mohr. After nearly missing out on qualifying for State as a sophomore, and doing so again last year as a junior, Mohr will be poised to play her best golf this spring. Along with Mohr, Streigle and Redlinger, the Savages welcome back Sierra Davis, Savannah At- wood, Sydney Streigle and Mya Talbert -- all of whom have past varsity experience. Junior Lindsey Wheeldom and freshmen Jade Aller and Autumn Reed will also show what they’ve got this spring. The Savages finished four strokes behind conference champion Belle Plaine at the South Iowa Cedar League Meet a year ago. On the boys’ side, returing SICL individual champion Kaden Benson is back to defend his title as a junior. Benson shot a 79 last year at the conference meet to finish one stroke ahead of BGM’s Keaton Rhinehart and two ahead of Lynnville-Sully’s Ben Trettin, and helping Sigourney place fourth out of ten teams. GOOD LUCK AREA SPORTS TEAMS! Senior Jordan Albert is also back for the Savages, after recording a season-best nine-hole round of 43 last year. Joining Albert and Benson on Crawford’s squad are sophomore Tanner Halleran, senior Matt Utterback and a group of five freshmen: Nick Goad, Dustin Haines, Brett Streigle, Ian Terfehn and Cole Weber. Look a number of those young- sters to step up throughout the season, with Halleran already being an established presence after compiling an excellent freshman season. The boys’ conference meet will be on Monday, May 9, at Iowa Valley, with the girls’ meet being two days later at Brooklyn-Victor Golf Course. Tee time for both meets is noon. In coach Davis Eidahl’s 52nd year at the helm, the Panthers are returning an excellent contingent of athletes in every category of events. Starting with the sprinters, the Panthers are bringing back both Chase and Tyler Copeland, who ran on the team’s State winning 4x200 and runner-up 4x100 last year at State. The brothers each have the ability to run sub-11.5 second 100s, along with sub-24 second 200s, making the team’s sprint relays formidable on their own. Supplementing the Copelands in the sprint relays looks to be the sophomore duo of Chase Eckley and Levi Long. While Long was attending North Mahaska last season, Eckley was busy running sub-24 seconds 200s and 57-second 400s, making him a potential difference maker in a number of events. Sophomore Monico Requena also appears poised to make a big difference in the sprint events for the Panthers. A number of talented runners return for Coach Eidahl at the middle distances as well. Along with Chase Eckley, sophomores Isaiah Wittrock and Sam Roth are back after solid freshman seasons. Wittrock placed 15th in the open 400 at State, while Roth will have his shot in both the 4x400 and 4x800. Also poised for a breakout year is freshman Cameron Millikin, who showed impressive speed on the hardwood this past winter. Senior Austin Fariss, junior Ryan Millikin and sophomore Chandler Eckley are all back to improve on their 17th-place finish at State last season in the 4x800 – all three of them have the potential to consistently run sub-2:10 800s. The distance crew will be led by R. Millikin, Malcolm Myers and Nate Kielkopf. Millikin took 12th at State last year in the 1,600, while Myers placed 18th. Millikin will be pushing to surpass the 4:40 mark in the mile, with Myers eying a 10:20 mark, or better, by the end of the spring. Pekin’s hurdle crew will be formidable as well, consisting of the likes of Long, Wittrock, Tyler Loyd and Zack Conger. Also look for Clayton Culp. Quinn Ledger and Jordan Hixson to push for spots in the shuttle hurdle. 9 In the field events, junior Zack Conger is the team’s top returner, placing 4th in the high jump last year in all of Class 1A, clearing a heighth of 6’5’’. Chase Eckley, C. Millikin and Caleb Comstock will be Pekin’s main long jumpers, and Slater Williams and Ryan Swanson will lead the Panthers in the discus. Junior Williams, along with junior Trever Northup, who was on the fringe of qualifying for State a year ago, look to be Pekin’s primary contenders in the shot put. Pekin moves up to Class 2A this season and will run in the SEISC North Conference Meet on Thursday, May 5, at Wapello High School. e r n l f PEKIN TRACK NAMES-Front row: Caleb Comstock, Quinn Ledger, Chandler Eckley, Ryan Millikin, Austin Farris, Malcolm Myers, Sam Roth, Nate Kielkopf; Second row: Coach Bill Rex, Shannon Saeger, Kennedy Coleman; Third row: Ryan Swanson, Jordan Hixson, Paige Keifer, Kirstan McKim, Linsey Talley, Amber Knox; Fourth row: Hunter Conger, Slater Williams, Canyon Decker, Hunter Lock, Sloan Reighard, Hollie Loper, Coral Estminger, Jasmine Harvey, Mackenzie Martin, Spencer Essary, Mackenzie Manley, Loraine Dodson; Fifth row: Connor Reed, Joel Swanson, Monico Requena, Katie Jones, Jade Harper, Chelsea Lanphier, Courtney Comstock, Shelbie Williams, Taylor Lock, Tayler Winn, Payton Lock, Kalee Haile, Kodi Dailey, Willoh Mills; Sixth row: Coach Josh Roudabush, Cameron Millikin, Trever Northup, Coach Lisa Crabtree, Isaiah Wittrock, Chase Copeland, Whitney Johnson, Maci Gambell, Jordyn Earnest, Deanna Winn, Coach Davis Eidahl, Aryen Essary, Coach Alissa Kitzman; Seventh row: Chase Eckley, Tyler Copeland, Zack Conger, Levi Long, Kaylee Linder, Shea Dahlstrom, Gwynne Wright, Zoey Wright, Kaysha Dodson; Photo credit: Lee’s Photography (Ottumwa). Senior dominated squad set for success By Adam Meier Regional Sports Editor PEKIN GIRLS TRACK & FIELD Head coach: Josh Roudabush Only Hudson and North Linn had better overall girls varsity track & field teams last year in all of Class 1A than Pekin. This year, the Lady Panthers will move up to Class 2A and await the new challenge of competing alongside large schools. Returning for the Lady Panthers are three individual State champions from last year’s 3rdplace team. In the high jump, senior Kaysha Dodson is back after clearing a personal-best height of 5’6’’ at the State Meet. This year, Dodson has goals of not only repeating as State champion, but of qualifying for the Drake Relays, which run April 28-30. Senior Beth Atwood is also back in the fold after qualifying for State as a sophomore. Another returning State champion back for her senior go-around is thrower Shelbie Williams. Williams, who also qualified for State last season in the discus, won the Class 1A shot put last year by throwing nearly 39 feet. Along with looking to repeat, Williams is poised for her secondstraight Drake Relays appearance. Katie Jones and Willow Mills will also throw this spring for Pekin. Pekin’s middle and long distance contingent will, once again, be highlighted by Gwynne Wright. Now a senior, Wright is looking to repeat in the 800-meter run after winning it last season in 2:16. Wright also claimed second place in both the 1,500 (4:57) and 3,000 (10:52) at State last year, and was part of Pekin’s 3rd-place distance medley relay. Senior Taylor Lock will also be back in action after placing 8th at State in the 3,000, running a time of 11:19. Pekin’s aforementioned distance medley relay consisted, last year, of Kaylee Linder, Sloan Reighard, Shea Dahlstrom and Wright, and the team brings back all four runners. Linder, the team’s top sprinter, clocked in at 13.15 seconds in the 100-meter dash at State last year, and hopes to improve on her 5th-place finish earned as a sophomore. Meanwhile, Reighard and Dahlstrom, along with Payton Lock and Mackenzie Martin, are all back after teaming up to place 18th last year in the 4x800. Junior Chelsea Lanphier will also be in the mix at the middle distances, as well as both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Expect contributions from Taylor Winn in the middle distances as well. In addition to Pekin’s wealth of returning contributors, a host of newcomers and underclassmen will make an impact. Zoey Wright and Jasmine Harvey will be look to in the sprints and hurdle events, along with Kalee Haile and Deanna Winn. Jordyn Earnest is also back for the Panthers at the middle distances, along with Hollie Loper, Kelly Myers and Ayren Essary – all of whom are capable from 800 meters to 3,000 meters. Courtney Comstock appears to be the team’s top long jumper, with Whitney Johnson and Kodi Dailey not far behind. The SEISC North Conference Meet is scheduled for Thursday, May 5, at Wapello High School. 10 Wednesday, April 13, 2016 | Spring Sports Tri-County track returns experience and potential By Adam Meier Regional Sports Editor TRI-COUNTY BOYS TRACK & FIELD Head coach: Keith Kiburz The tide has turned for the TriCounty varsity boys’ track & field team. Just a few short years ago the Trojans struggled to fill out more than a few relays and a few individual events. Now, coach Keith Kiburz and the Trojans are stocked up on experienced runners, which will only pay dividends throughout the season. Leading the team in the category of experience this spring will be seniors Joe Haberling and Luke Bombei. Haberling, a hurdle specialist, ran times of 20.61 seconds last year in the 110 highs, and 1:11 in the 400 lows. The senior also has experience in the middle distances, and could help the Trojans in the 4x400 and 4x800. Once again, Bombei will be the team’s top thrower this season, while also playing a role in TriCounty’s sprint relays. As a junior, Bombei came through with tosses of 35’10.25’’ in the shot put, and 104’10’’ in the discus. However, Bombei has already toppled his 2015 season best in both events, tossing 118’ in the discus and 40’ in the shot put, early last week. Junior Zach Bolinger will also be pushing Bombei in the shot, after nearly reaching 33’ as a TRI-COUNTY BOYS TRACK-Front Row (left to right): Warren Williams, Bailey Davis, Austin Purdy, Steven Estes; Middle Row: Brandt Molyneux, Jacob Bombei, Braydon Clubb, Tanner Lundy, Dylan Seaton; Back Row: Joe Haberling, Walter McKay, Luke Bombei, Cameron Krumm, Zachery Bolinger. sophomore. Seniors Kristin Krumm and Emma Bair will head the Trojans’ attack this spring, bringing both speed and experience to the track. As juniors, both Bair and Krumm ran sub-12 second 100-meter dashes and were right around the 31-second mark in the 200. Krumm is also more than capable in the 100-meter hurdles, running a season-best time of 20.68 seconds last year. Joining the sprint crew of Bair and Krumm will be talented sophomore Allison Steinke. Steinke, who is also strong in the 400 and 2VNDORRVD 6RXWK0DUNHW2VNDORRVD,$ 800, is the team’s leading returner in the 200, clocking in at 30.47 last year as a freshman. Along with Krumm, expect Riley Danner to play a big part in Tri-County’s sprint events. Danner clocked in at 16.83 seconds in the 100 last year, and at 33.39 in the 200. At the middle distances, Lexi Leer and Hannah Miover have a chance to make a splash, with Leer also doing her thing in both the shot put and discus. Other newcomers for Coach Kiburz include freshman sprinter Taylor Dowd, along with Megan Edmundson, Katharina Wausehkuhr, Jenna Leer and Mathilde Daspremont. Sophomore Skyler Fisher is also back this spring after stepping up as the team’s top thrower last season. As a freshman, Fisher tossed a distance of 21’7’’ in the shot put, and she’ll look to improve on that this year. With a new head coach and new attitude, though, the Bears have established a much deeper roster than usual this season, providing the team with added versatility and excitement. Without the team’s top performer from a year ago, Kellan Coppinger (out after ankle surgery), English Valleys will rely on a largely unproven group. Highlighting the returning athletes for the Bears are Matt Burlage, Thomas Glandon and Chad Owens. Burlage brings experience and in turn, versatility, in a bevy of events. The junior competed in the 100, 200, 400, 400-meter hurdles, 800 and 1,600 last year as a sophomore. Burlage can consistently break the one-minute mark in the 400, while clocking in at around 1:07-1:10 in the 400 hurdles and 2:30 in the 800. Thomas Glandon is also back for EV after a successful freshman season. Glandon has experience in the 400 hurdles, 800 and 1,600, and has potential to anchor the team’s distance medley relay. Junior Chad Owens returns as the team’s top field-event performer. Coach Kiley Blythe will miss the contributions from a handful of last year’s seniors, but a talented group of newcomers will be welcomed with open arms. After strutting their stuff in the fall during cross country, freshmen Isabella Fisher and Isabel Schneider will do much of the heavy lifting at the middle distances for the Bears. Fisher possesses the versatility to excel at distances anywhere from 200 to 1,500 meters, while Schneider looks to stay in the 400 to 1,500 range. Both freshmen gives the Bears the ability to mix and match in a number of relay events. Junior Hannah Greene, who missed most of the cross county season with a foot injury, is expected to be back at full strength -for Coach Blythe. Greene ran ktimes of 2:39 and 6:00 last year in the 800 and 1,500, respectively, and should be around those marks h again this spring. Freshmen Alyson Warrick and t t W.C. Gretter & Sons, Inc. Senior Sam Stewart represents the team’s most veteran presence. Stewart, an effective sprinter, will be a steady performer for the Bears at the 100 and 200-meter distances, as will athletic sopho- more Audrey Grove. Contributions from Autumn Higdon and Summer Gibson also are to be expected. In the field events, freshmen Angela Wells and Madison Trimpe will headline the group. Coach Jeff Kingland’s boys squad claimed the South Iowa Cedar League team title, while the girls put together a fantastic season as well. Now, the Bears are working to plug the holes left by the talented group of seniors who led them last year. Back in the mix for last year’s conference champion boys are seniors Andrew Kerkove and Casey Blaylock. At the SICL Meet a year ago, Kerkove finished with the team’s second-best score, of 85, and tied for sixth in the individual conference standings. In 2015, Kerkove’s best 9-hole round was 39. Blaylock had a strong season as well, coming in with a score of 43 for his lowest round of the season. Casey will be looking to improve on last year’s performance at the SICL Meet, when he shot a 106. Junior Will Tapken will be another key performer for English Valleys this spring.
