CHERRY KNOWLE HOSPITAL Redevelopment of Victorian Asylum
CHERRY KNOWLE HOSPITAL CHERRY KNOWLE HOSPITAL Redevelopment of Victorian Asylum BACKGROUND OUR PROJECT Cherry Knowle Hospital in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear was a Victorian mental asylum located outside the village of Ryhope on a sprawling, 68 hectare site. The main hospital building closed in 1998 and the site is in the process of being wound down, to be replaced by a new hospital. plan was drawn up for the development A of a large portion of the site as an extension to the nearby village of Ryhope, with space for 900 homes. A second workshop was held in May 2004, this was organised specifically to engage with medical staff on site and incorporate their opinions into the design of the new hospital. Following a visit to the site by HRH The Prince of Wales and the Secretary of State for Health in January 2003, we held an Enquiry by Design (EbD) workshop in November that year. This explored options for re-use of the site and its buildings. The Homes and Communities Agency, a public body that funds affordable house, bought the site from the NHS and demolition of the old hospital site started in early 2011, with plans to create up to 770 new homes. The NHS Foundation Trust also has a £50m plan for new facilities at Ryhope Hospital and at nearby Monkwearmouth Hospital.
