Introduction
The trends have changed yet again as we move into spring
2009. Its a new year and what was in, now is out! Our spring issue will provide you with the information you need in order to
update your wardrobe for the coming season.
In sportswear what was old now is new again as the eighties
makes a come back on the runway. Think big shoulders, neon colors, jumpsuits and references to pop icons such as Madonna and
Michael Jackson. Boyfriend blazers and harem pants become the
hot new silhouettes for jackets and pants in 2009. Ethnic prints are
bigger than ever this year so be bold and go global. Don’t forget
to be a lady, ruffles and bows are on everything for spring so don’t
get too caught up in wearing your boyfriends jacket.
When it comes to outerwear leather and denim were two very
popular fabrics. Whether it be a trench, a bomber or a moto jacket
you can’t go wrong is these two classic fabrics. Your trench coat
from last year is still on trend this year ladies so don’t get rid of
everything in your closet from last season. Other great styles to
consider are those with voluminous sleeves or something buttonless.
Eveningwear is always glamourous but this year the designers out did
themselves. You couldn’t look any more feminine and alluring in the styles
that came down the runway. Greacian drapery shows of every curve of a
womens body in the most flattering way while one shoulder numbers show
just enough skin to be sexy but remain classy. Don’t know what to wear
on a romantic night out with your husband, pick anything with a ruffle and
you’ll be set. Also good choices are jeweled or plunging necklines.
Dresses remain feminine as well with lace, flowers, and sheer fabrics
ruling the runway. Travel back in time yet again to the twenties with flapper inspired fringe dresses and to the eighties with full on pailletes.
When choosing accessories look for animal skin bags, box clutches,
and bags with jeweles, animal prints, and chain handles. When choosing
shoes go for ones that have architectual heels, are strappy and go around
the ankle. Belts are still in so whether you go thick or thin doesn’t matter.
As for jewelry, simply go big or go home. A bare face, scarlet
lips, smokey eyes and metallics keeps make-up simple.

Inspiration
Sportswear
Throughout Sportswear this season designers shared four
common themes as inpiration for their Spring collections: 80’s,
ethnic, pop culture and art. Eighties influences came from Madonna, Michael Jackson, Miami Vice, and Rock n’ Roll which
were referenced in the jumpsuits, underwear as outer wear,
Drummer-boy jackets and neon colors that came down the runway. Multi-cultural influences were seen as designers chose to
represent a myriad of ethnicities with various printed fabrics
and styling. Pop culture had an influence on all five sportswear
trends. Proenza Schouler was influenced by Last Days of Disco,
Preen by Easy Rider and Jimi Hendrix, Ralph Lauren by Indiana Jones, Basso & Brooke by Blade Runner, Alexander Wang
by Miami Vice and Doo.Ri by False Silence written by Bruce
Nauman. Designers looked to artists to spark their design
creativity as well. French artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s proto-pop style influenced Vera Wang’s line for Spring while Marie Laurencin’s portrait of
Chanel influenced Karl Lagerfeld.

Inspiration
Outerwear
Inspiration came from all directions for the Spring 2009
fashion shows. The 1980’s popped up again with big shoulders
at Iceberg, relaxed looks from Miami Vice at Alexander Wang
and Michael Jackson’s Drummer-boy jacket also seen in the
previous trend. Other eras refrenced were the twenties in both
Aquilano Rimondi’s and Alberta Ferrettis collections.
Many designers traveled to Japan drawing inspiration from
sleek street wear fashion, the architectual lines of the city and
traditional dressing (Kimono, obi belt). No doubt the result of
society’s ever popluar fascination to “Go Green”, nature once
again came into the spotlight. Petals and Ivy showed up everywhere at Tracey Reese while gardens were the inspiration at
Akris and Burberry Prorsum (specifically Christopher Bailey’s
own garden at Yorkshire). Allessandro Dell’Aqua jumped on the band
wagon as well refrencing the nature loving, “tree hugging” hippies from the
seventies.
Architecture and geometic shapes (circle, square, triangle) were seen
on the runway at Chado Ralph Rucci and Gianfranco Ferre. However,
inspiration did not come solely from tangible items they came from nontangible as well, that is an idea as inspiration. The idea that “Everything
weighs ounces” inspired Badgley Mischka who kept things light with satin
and gazar. Finally, Charles Anastase chose two explore girlish extremes of
innocence and experience.

Inspiration
Eveningwear
Designers seemed to all be on the same page when it came
to eveningwear for spring as their inspiration came from one of
two places, either travel or nature. Global travel seemed to rule
the runway with inspiration coming from all over the world;
from Europe to Asia to South America, not a continent was left
out. Andrew Gn found his inspiration in Asia with India inspiring his spring collection. Carlos Miele’s collection reflected his
Brazilian roots with references of the lush rainforest and the use
of beautiful native gem stones. Lela Rose went to Africa gaining her inspiration from local tribes. Tapestry embroidery, jewel
tone silks and twisted evening dresses inspired by traditional
headwraps took tribal dressing to a sophisticated level. Ralph
Lauren also found his inspiration in Africa, Morocco to be exact, featuring safari looks along with traditional pieces like the
turban. A Tropical Island getaway was more inspiring for Monique Lhuillier who designed easy, breezy, beachy, tropic print dresses. Reem Acra
however did not draw his inspiration from just one area, he drew his from
several. His collection was based on famous architecture such as the Taj
Mahal, Buckingham Palace and Royal Castles. Several designers even
traveled back in time to Ancient Greece to get their creative juices flowing.
Classic Greek drapery can be seen on the runways of Donna Karan, Fashion Fringe, Anne Valerie Hash and Alberta Ferretti.
Last but not least natures influence can be seen on the runway at
Akris, Erdem and Luisa Beccaria. They brought gardens to life with ruffles
that mimicked flowers and whimsical costuming inspired by the setting of
A Midsummer Nights Dream.

Dresses
Nature inspired designers once again as they popped up
everywhere this season on dresses. Flowers, flowers and more
flowers sprung onto the runway making a this feminine garment
even more feminine. Also making the dress the epitome of femininity was lace which designers La Perla and A.F. Vandevorst
worked with after being inspired by women’s lingerie.
Eighties fashion continues to be a huge influence as we see
the trend spilling over onto dresses as well. Corseted waists and
pointed bras at Christian Dior bring us back to the high eighties.
Also taking inspiration from the eighties were Tommy Hilfiger
who looked to Angelica Houston and Balmain who looked to
Madonna and Michael Jackson. The roaring twenties came back
in a big way as well with designers such as Alberta Ferretti and
Jil Sander bringing back the classic flapper dress and Aquilano Rimondi
refrencing Elsa Schiaparelli.
Lastly, architecture was the inspiration behind the collections at Chado Ralph Rucci and Costume National. Conceptual architecture to be more
exact was what Costume National focused on. This is architecture that
does not get built because there is no technology to make it possible.
