Episode DESCRIPTION
When Tom Jessup went shopping for groceries one Saturday
morning, he never imagined he would come back with a house!
He was walking past the auction of a 3 bed cottage in the
suburb of West Footscray, and thought it would be perfect start
for his 21 year old son Paul. But Paul, who was on holiday
in Croatia, had other ideas. He wanted to move to Europe,
not pay off a mortgage. So Tom found himself with a house
he didn’t want. He paid $465,000 for the cottage and needs
$510,000 to break even. But the 70s patterned wallpaper and
mottled carpets, means nobody wants to buy the house at Toms
price. The only solution is to spend money to make money and
renovate the house inside and out.
The Interior
The house looked great from the outside but was quite dated
on the inside. Our first task was to strip the walls of their 70’s
wallpaper and start with a clean slate. The laundry and only
toilet were in good working order, but the rest of the house
needed to be re-painted and carpet removed and replaced.
To make the house more aesthetically pleasing to buyers we
added floating floorboards in the front entrance hallway, lounge
room and kitchen from FOWLES AUCTIONS AND SALES. The
walls in the hallway were in average condition so after removing
the wallpaper the holes were filled and ready to be painted with
TAUBMANS® Endure Interior, Precision , a shade of blue/grey
which gave a sense of calm throughout. The ceiling and doors
were in good condition and were painted with TAUBMANS®
Endure Interior, Crisp White. The hallway was then dressed
with simple prints to create an inviting entry. We continued this
colour scheme through the rest of the property for a feeling of
simple elegance.
The master bedroom was painted along with the built in
wardrobe. The old 70’s carpet was removed and replaced with
new charcoal carpet from FOWLES AUCTIONS + SALES to
create a fresh feel to the room. Shaynna replaced the blinds

with simple cream tab top curtains to reveal the
beautiful stained glass. The room was decorated in a
modern take on Art Deco with furniture from LAURA
ASHLEY and VALIANT HIRE. Shaynna wanted to
keep the bedding simple, so crisp white linen was
used in all 3 bedrooms and was accentuated in the
master bedroom with a faux fur throw and pillows,
and dark mahogany bedside tables.
The second bedroom was the same colour scheme
as the master, but had a different feel. The bed
was accentuated with red pillows matching the wall
prints, and with modern glass bedside tables and
funky lamps.
The third bedroom/study was tailored towards a
teenager and featured a modern desk, and two
bedside tables with white lamps. Because the
room was small, the space needed to be utilized
accordingly so a single bed was added with white
linen and a few cushions and a green throw. Both
bedrooms got new charcoal carpet from FOWLES
AUCTIONS AND SALES.
In the lounge room the carpet was removed and
replaced with new floating floorboards. The walls
and ceiling were painted and Shaynna dressed the
room in modern furniture from LAURA ASHLEY &
VALIANT HIRE with mixture of fabric textures of
linen weaves, velvet and leather to create interest
to the simple colour scheme. Traditional styles like
button back chairs were used to reflect the houses
age. The blinds were replaced with cream tab top
curtains to make the most of the stained glass
windows.
The kitchen was old and was in dire need of
replacing. Shaynna got a bargain white kitchen and
stainless steel appliances from FOWLES AUCTION
+ SALES. The kitchen table was originally placed
up against the wall blocking the path through to the
laundry and third bedroom. This was moved into the
middle of the kitchen and replaced with a round
table to create easy access to the end of the house.
Shaynna dressed the kitchen with red vases and
black and white tea and coffee tins.

The garden
Thankfully the front garden and façade of this
Melbourne cottage was in very good condition,
so aside from mowing the lawns and weeding the
garden beds Charlie had very little to do. The back
yard however, was a different story. An assortment
of ramshackled pergolas, dodgy lean to’s and scruffy
shade cloths made the garden look horrendous. The
ground looked more like the surface of mars, thanks
to a layer of red pebbles and the only plants that
seemed to be thriving were the weeds and a solitary
hedge.
There was no way Charlie could make anything of the
yard without some serious demolition, so the pegola,
outdoor loo and and garage lean to ended up in the
skip. The result was a garden nearly double the size.
Charlie’s first job was to build a generous new
entertaining deck off the back of the house. The
deck was big enough to house a large dining table
and chairs and an outdoor lounge, both supplied by
VALIANT HIRE’S Melbourne store. He constructed
the deck out of treated pine, which he sourced at a
discount price at FOWLES SALES AND AUCTIONS.
To give it a more expensive look, Charlie stained it in
a hardwood colour.
The next task was to give the garden some turf. At
$5 it was the cheapest component in the garden, but
went a long way to making the yard look neat and
tidy.
The hedge at the back was about the only thing
Charlie could salvage from the previous yard. He
gave it a trim and planted a row of star Jasmine to
grow up along the adjoining fence. The garden bed
was planted out with a Magnolia Vulcan as a feature
and to give shade to the entertaining area, while
Philadelphus filled out the beds. A ceramic planter
from POTSONLINE was planted out with herbs. To
finish the effect, the weatherboards at the back of
the house were painted with TAUBMANS® ENDURE
EXTERIOR Twiggy. This took away the glare of the
previously white boards and contrasted perfectly with
the planting.
