PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
On Friday 25 September our school will gather for
the final assembly with the full Year 12 cohort.
This is the last day for those students in VET
courses and the ATAR students will officially finish
on Friday 23 October.

SCHOOL VALUES
We RESPECT
our traditions, our
environment,
ourselves and one
another
We take
RESPONSIBILITY
for our actions
We develop strong
RELATIONSHIPS
in the school
community
We learn from
RELEVANT
and real experiences
We RECOGNISE
and reflect on our
achievements and
successes
We encourage
RISK TAKING to
achieve our potential
The final assembly is traditionally a celebration of
the students 12 years of schooling and an
acknowledgment of the contribution they have
made to our school and other schools they have attended. It is also an
opportunity for the Year 12 students to thank and acknowledge the
teachers and support staff who have helped them through their schooling,
particularly in the last two years. In past years, this demonstration of
mutual respect makes for a fun yet emotive day for all involved.
As Principal of Bunbury High, I am very proud of our Year 12 students and
I look forward to celebrating this day with them. The final formal event for
this group is the Year 12 Presentation Ceremony, which takes place on 30
November in the School Gymnasium. Again, this is a time of mixed
emotions for students, staff and parents, but a time when we all feel very
proud of their achievement.
The election for our 2016 student leaders has concluded and the new
Prefects will be announced and introduced to the school during the Year
12 Final Assembly. I will speak about our current prefects at the
Presentation Ceremony but I do want to thank them in this newsletter. As
a group, they have been excellent ambassadors for the school and
promoted the values to which we aspire. They have been an active group
and offered activities for the younger students in the school and raised
funds for community organisations. I want to thank them for the
contribution they have made to our school.
The opportunity now exists for students in other year groups to become
recognised student leaders through our House system. The concept is not
new and I am sure this type of system has existed in the school in previous
years however, the strength of the system will lie in the support given by
the students and staff and the sustainable structures that are put in place.
I am a strong supporter of such a model because it enables our younger
students to continue the leadership roles they may have had in primary
school and it gives the student body a „voice‟ in what happens in the
school.
Finally, I want to promote the school App. This was established to enable
better communication between parents and the school by means of
notifications via the Internet. There is a facility for parents to submit
absentee notes, change contact details and access this newsletter. From
the school perspective it is possible to notify all parents of news items as
they happen as well as upload useful documents such as the canteen
menu. Obviously, the App only works as well as the number of people
who access it and for that reason I encourage all parents to download the
Bunbury Senior High School App from the App Store or the Play Store.

YOUNG WRITERS‟
DAY
On Wednesday 9 September a group of talented
young writers assembled with writing tools in
hand, creative minds buzzing and talent waiting
to be unleashed. They were to spend the day
crafting their skills with special guest author Deb
Fitzpatrick, otherwise to be known as Queen Deb
or rather, Her Royal Highness!
A WA writer, Deb is the author of The Amazing
Spencer Gray, a novel for younger readers
(2013). Her two novels for young adults – 90
Packets of Instant Noodles (2010) and Have You
Seen Ally Queen? (2011) – were both awarded
Notable Books by the Children‟s Book Council of
Australia. The Break is her first book for adult
readers.
From left: Emma Lush, Emma Tinley, Amber Howitt, Hannah Thomas, Rohan
Prowse, Sarsha Shaw, Daniel Pinfold, Nathan Nguyen, Deb Fitzpatrick (visiting
author), Emma Patterson, Georgia Dowd, Chloe Horton, Hannah Prowse, Cristin
Edwards and Calista Hayward.
Deb started the day talking about stories. Where do stories come from?
“Stories can come from anywhere” she said, but for Deb sometimes writing begins with place, and then the story follows.
With that she asked the young writer‟s to think about
place and consider the following idea.
Ms Malone, English Teacher
If you had to move anywhere, where would
you live and why?
I would move to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
The views are very picturesque with sand as red as
blood and the grass-green trees, set in front of a vibrant
blue sky. Well it would just completely take my breath
away.
Sarsha Shaw and Hannah Thomas
Emma Lush and Calista Hayward
Hannah Prowse, Year 8
The Whitsundays would be my island, my home, my own place of tranquillity. Just off the warm
Queensland coast, with the world famous Great Barrier Reef as my front yard, perfect for
snorkelling. The freedom and open space and the friendly smiles everyone gives. The pure
white beaches and the aqua-blue oceans. The many new places and caves are open for
exploring, discovering new things. The fresh fruit, all home grown, and the endless BBQ‟s with
friends. Sailing around every island, discovering my own new world.
Emma Tinley, Year 7
Georgia Dowd
If I had to move, I would go to the place I grew up in for a couple of years when I was younger,
Cocos Keeling Islands. I would move because it‟s really peaceful there and it has an amazing atmosphere encasing it.
Everyone knows each other and people are really friendly.
Cocos Island is made up of many islands so I could swim every day and the dolphins are really confident around us. The
islands have lots of community activities that run all the time like island sports events and giant sausage sizzles. There
are always little peaceful places to retreat to whenever you just want to be alone. Where no one can find you.
Amber Howitt, Year 8
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE
AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION
Of the 322 mathematically able students who were selected to
sit for the recent Australian Mathematics Competition, 98
scored credits, 25 attained distinctions and 3 achieved a high
distinction. Three students Matthew Henderson in Year 7
together with David Strong and Daniel Aperios from Year 10
gained 99% on this rigorous non-calculator problem solving
test.
The following students join those mentioned above as the top
three achievers in their year. Jamieson Loxton and William
Allen in Year 7, Emma Paterson, Rohan Prowse and Zadia
Christensen in Year 8, Ari Jenkinson, David Lown and Rhys
Mader in Year 9, Bailey Hill from Year 10, Aiden Musarri,
Tegan Mansfield and Julian Merchan from Year 11 with Chloe
Thomson, Jai Howitt and Raya Thompson from Year 12.
JUNIOR DEBATING TEAM
RUNNERS UP IN SWETA/ZONTA
REGIONAL DEBATING
COMPETITION
The team tied for runner up with Bunbury
Cathedral Grammar School when they lost
their recent debate on the topic: 'That
traditional schools are no longer necessary'.
Grace Christian School successfully argued
the negative case that we still need
traditional schools. Our team of Clare
Beyboer, Jayden Winter and Nicholas
Bremner represented the school with
distinction.
It is notable that Riley Martin in Year 7 along with Taleesha
Rowell and Mia Williams from Year 9 join the students in
achieving 90% or above in this competition.
Grace Huang from Year 7 gained the Prudence Award. This is
awarded to the student who achieves the highest number of
correct answers in a row.
Congratulations to all participants. The problem solving ability
of these students reflects not just the students‟ talent but the
dedication of our mathematics staff in preparing these
students for this competition with explicit teaching of problem
solving strategies.
Special thanks to Mrs Vicki Hughes for coordinating this competition and to Mr Bourne for helping with timetabling this
special event.

ODDBALL MOVIE
EXCURSION
On Thursday 27 August the Year 7-10 Selective Academic
Program Students ventured down to the Bunbury Grand
Cinemas to attend a preview screening of the feature film
Oddball, as part of the CinefestOZ Cinesnaps Schools
program.
“Oddball, an Australian family film tells the story of a man’s
passion to save animals using a rather unique method.
With persistent fox attacks threatening to close down the
main tourist attraction of a small town in South Australia –
an island of Fair Penguins – an eccentric chicken farmer
teams up with his granddaughter to save them using a very
odd method his rambunctious troublemaking sheep dog”
The film was aimed at a younger audience (much of the
humour was more child-orientated) but the dialogue was
playful and offered a few laugh-out-loud moments, mostly
from Shane Jacobson (as the chicken farmer) whose
performance was one of the film‟s key selling points.
We were lucky enough to
be the first members of the
public to see the film,
followed by the opportunity
to ask the producer,
Richard
Keddie,
some
questions about how the
film was made.
Being able to ask the producer of the film questions was an insightful experience.
He gave fun facts and interesting information about how
the movie was prepared, shot and edited and the effort it
takes to produce a feature film. The younger kids travelling
with us got their questions answered and we, as the older
group, got to ask him what we wanted to know.
It was definitely a welcome change to be asking questions
of someone who actually works in the field of filmmaking
and understands the industry. His advice and knowledge
was valuable education to those who are considering
filmmaking as a potential career choice.

Year 11 Indonesian
Film Festival
Excursion
BSHS Year 11 Indonesian students had the
opportunity to travel to Perth this month for a once a
year opportunity, to attend the 2015 Perth Indonesian
Film Festival. It was a great day and a most valuable
and enjoyable experience for the students.
Following a screening of Seputih Cinta Melati (As
White as Melati’s Love) students participated in a
question and answer session with members from the
cast and crew.
Renowned
husband
and wife partnership
Ari Sihasale and Nia
Zulkarnaen of Alenia
Pictures made the trip
from Indonesia for the
festival and were on
hand to discuss the
film.
Ari
Sihasale
directed and produced
Muka Sidaphan, Mr Haslam
the
film, while Nia
and Nia Zulkarnaen
Zulkarnaen was the executive producer and also starred in it.
They were joined by child star Fatih Unru, who delivered an impressive performance in the film, and his
father and co-star Yayu Unro. Fatih Unru even gave
an impromptu stand-up comedy routine in response to
a question from an attending student.
Seputih Cinta Melati is a film that delivered valuable
focus point for our students as it touched on everrelevant subject matter such as morality, religion and
family. It was released in time for the school holidays
and the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a topic
that our students have focussed on this year.
Our BSHS students impressed with the questions
they asked after the film, and with their genuine interest and willingness to participate in discussion with
the film‟s stars.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT CAMP
YEAR 10 BEST STUDENTS
The week leading up to the AIS Best Camp seemed to go
on forever, but our time had finally come!!
We met at school where Mr Charles presented us with our
bright yellow BEST Beanies. After our compulsory photos
we then said goodbye to our families and made our way to
the Perth Airport.
We landed in Canberra after an enjoyable but tiring flight
and went straight to the AIS. Everyone went to bed, ready
to see what the next few days would bring.
The AIS dining hall was impressive as we sat next to
athletes who were staying at the AIS while enjoying a
buffet breakfast. We also had the opportunity to meet
Australian Boxer Shelly Watts in a lecture about how she
became a successful athlete in a boxing career.
BEST Students pictured outside AIS
We felt so privileged to stay at the AIS; our highlights were being able to use many of their facilities like the gym
and the hot and cold baths.
It was nearly time for the snow, but first, we made a quick stop at Parliament House and the Australian War
Memorial.
Jindabyne was next on the list. We collected our snow gear and before we knew it we were standing at the
bottom of the ski slopes. For many of us, this was our first time skiing and being in the snow.
Both days of skiing were filled with laughter and a little frustration but we all had a great time.
At the end of our final day of skiing, we enjoyed drinking our snow cones that Mr Charles had provided, while
looking at the view of Perisher.
Thank you very much Mr Charles and Ms Winwood for giving us
this opportunity and making it an experience we will never forget

"Currently top Indonesian, Psychology, English
and Dance student for 2015 and aiming to complete a double major in Indonesian and Social and
Developmental Psychology I will use the
knowledge gained to better the lives of others.
Passionate about the need for quality education
on a global scale, and using my knowledge of the
Indonesian language, my ultimate goal is to set up
an organisation in Indonesia that will allow children, to have access to a better education, especially in the remote parts of Indonesia having been
inspired by the Indonesian organisation, Sokola
Rimba. This organisation has given me the hope
to build and improve the social and developmental
issues Indonesian people are facing today. I will
continue at Bunbury Headspace, as a member of
their Youth Reference Group, assisting vulnerable
youth with life skills. I also wish to continue my leisure activity of dancing, and teach dance to young
students."

first position over the past months. This
is a fantastic achievement.
Well done Mariah.
RoboCup 2015 - A Great Result!
The Bunbury Senior High School‟s Robotics Club started in May. Members have
been building and programming robots using Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits. The group
worked hard redesigning and refining their robots leading up to the
successful participation of three teams in RoboCup 2015. Teams
had to have their robots autonomously navigate a sequence of
paths and obstacles to successfully rescue a victim from a
chemical spill.
The RoboCup Junior Rescue Competition was held in early August
at Curtin Stadium. There were 52 teams competing in the preliminary rounds. Our teams placed 3rd, 9th and 24th. One of our teams,
Skynet, went through to the finals. This was a great effort for our
first time and we look forward to entering robots in the 2016
competition.
I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Cypher. He very kindly
constructed the course obstacles we used leading up to the
competition which included a see-saw, bridge, arches and
columns. These provided our students with the opportunity to
test their robots for conditions they were to encounter in the
competition. Thank you also to Mr Strong and Mrs Cypher, who
were the mentors for two of the teams, and helped make our
very busy day such a great success.

MadMaker Challenge
Robotics Club members are about to begin a new phase. We were successful
in our grant application for 15 Arduino Esplora microcontroller boards and will
be participating in the MadMaker Challenge in Term 4. The six week challenge
is conducted by the University of New South Wales and is designed to be an
introduction to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It is
done by programming small computers (microcontrollers) to perform simple
tasks and is organised as a set of weekly challenges. Every week a new set of
activities is proposed around a different theme. The content is based on the
Australian Curriculum and targets the areas of Science, Mathematics and
Digital Technology. The Esplora boards have built in sensors and outputs ready for students to upload
programs and start experimenting. We plan to design housings for each of the units and use 3D printers at the
school to make them.

Workplace Learning
Term 3 was a huge success for VET students with
nearly 100 placements at our fantastic, supportive
local businesses. Bunbury Senior High School
appreciates the time and effort given to training the
future workforce whilst still at school.
Well done to all students.

Year 11 Geography Town Surveys
As part of the year 11 Geography curriculum, students
are to study the automobile trade industry - both past,
present and future situation. To link with this, the class
needed the general public‟s opinion about the industry. Students prepared a survey of 20 questions and
set out to ask 10 members of the public, with some
family members “being in the right place at the right
time” to help the students along.
While daunted at first, the students jumped into the
task with enthusiasm and by the end of the session,
many groups had more completed surveys than they
expected. Some groups even helped out struggling
groups to get the required number of surveys answered.
Students used their town research to produce an indepth report about the automobile industry, with some
surprising public opinion results. Once surveying was
completed, consolidation and a quick spot of lunch
was enjoyed before returning to school.

BUNBURY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SHEDWORKS
LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Our Shedworks team has been building, measuring, cutting and welding together play equipment for the
young ones at Cooinda. On Monday, after driving to Cooinda with the rest of our classmates, we started leveling out the sand using a spirit level and screed bar on metal straps. When the sand was completely flat and
leveled out, we positioned the first pallet into place, screwed it together and proceeded onto the next pallet
until the project was completed.
We are currently half way through putting
together the last piece of play equipment at
Cooinda Primary. We are planning on
painting all three pieces bright orange,
together with the climbing pyramid and seesaw we installed at Saint Josephs.
Next term, Shedworks will be building
outdoor furniture for Koombana Bay and
we’ll also be doing some work at the Milligan House. Grayden Sharpe has found
employment at Ausquip. Kyle Healiss is
on a work placement trial with Pure Gardens and Cougar Lee is on a trial leading
to employment at CKC Flooring. Congratulations to Zac, Luke and Kyle on their
Broad Horizons awards.

As a group we have raised over $3,000 together which is amazing!!. The money will allow World Vision to make a difference for those in third world countries who still experience hunger and who do not have the luxuries of furniture or technology that we have. Thank you once again to those who participated in the famine and to those who gave donations. Because
our school community has supported the 40 Hour Famine so well, Tim Costello (CEO of World Vision) chose to visit us during his time in Bunbury which was quite an honour. So well done again.
I will be printing out the certificates very soon. Please let me know if you haven‟t received one.
The Great Book Swap
Many thanks to the students who responded to the Daily Notices announcement and brought a book in to swap (for a gold
coin donation) in the Great Book Swap on 25th and 26th August at the school library. It was an opportunity for us to help
raise funds for Indigenous literacy programs during Literacy Week. We have sent off a cheque to the Indigenous Literacy
Foundation from the money raised. Thank you to Ms Mead in English for organising the fundraiser. I hope we can do it
again next year.
All the best.

TIM COSTELLO VISIT
On Friday 4th September Tim Costello (CEO of World
Vision) came to visit our school and spoke to our House
Leaders about the importance of being an advocate for
those who are less fortunate than us.
He spoke about how he visits many countries in his work at
World Vision. He said he was able to meet one of the
children he sponsors in Zimbabwe through World Vision
and saw first hand how it has made a huge difference in her
life.
Craige Pettit and Tim
Costello
Mr Costello spoke about how it is so important to have
perspective in life. He said it is easy for us to feel like we
have problems in our country but they are not so big
compared to what third world countries are going through.
Jarod Barbetti, Hannah Mitchell, Tim
Costello, Maria Carmona Hoyos and
Toby Kunz.
Mr Costello answered a number of questions at the end of
his talk, which showed the students were really interested in his work and keen to know
more about the challenges for World Vision‟s work overseas.
A number of our student leaders were able to have an informal chat with him
afterwards at a morning tea in the boardroom.
It was a pleasure to have Mr Costello and the World Vision team visit our school and
we really appreciate the work they do.

On Wednesday 9th September as part of Young Writers‟ Week we
were lucky to welcome guest author Deb Fitzpatrick (90 packets of
Instant Noodles; the Amazing Spencer Gray; Have you seen Ally
Queen?’ The Break). Ms Fitzpatrick (or, as she encouraged students call her “Queen Deb”) discussed her writing and presented
workshop exercises to students from Bunbury Senior High and other schools who are involved in the Young Writers‟ program.
Students listened attentively as Ms Fitzpatrick talked about her inspiration and techniques, and were a study
of concentration as they worked on their own pieces. Most participants read aloud samples of their work,
which was of outstanding quality. Ms Fitzpatrick was a very encouraging and inspiring author and we thank
Tracey Malone for her efforts in organising this visit.
Next term we are also fortunate to have Sally Murphy visit as our guest author.

Hello parents,
What a positive meeting that was held in Week 7. We have streamlined
meeting proceedings and it certainly made a big difference. There is now plenty
of time for people's opinions and views to be heard. If you have never attended
a P & C meeting before, please put our Term 4 meeting in your diary: Wednesday November 25 (Christmas in November!) 6.00pm-7.00pm in the school
library. Light refreshments will be available - get there a little earlier to have
time to make a cuppa.
As always, the canteen could do with some volunteers. Come on board now
and take your pick of the spots for next term‟s roster.
Finally, the P & C now has a Facebook page and we will be using this as our
primary means of communicating with parents. Look out for posts about what's
going on at the school, positive stories about BSHS students, fundraising opportunities, canteen volunteer roster vacancies and everything else P & C at
Bunbury High School:

Meet Members of the BSHS P & C Committee
Jeannie Lewis, Secretary, BSHS P & C
Currently in my second year on the P&C, I have two girls at Bunbury High – one
in Year 7 and one in Year 9. I joined the P&C committee to find out more about
the school and to keep in touch with what‟s happening throughout the year. It
was also my hope to be able to contribute to various projects which would benefit students and staff at Bunbury High. As a group we are working to create an
efficient P&C Committee which aims to be a productive and meaningful part of
the Bunbury High Community.
Bunbury Senior High School is currently establishing the
Kingia Alumni and encourages all former students and
staff to register their interest in becoming a member.
Being one of the oldest schools in the state Bunbury
Senior High School has long and well-established connection to the community.
In 2018 the school will celebrate its centenary, its history and traditions, our loyal and supportive community,
and the many outstanding students and teachers that have been part of its rich history.
We envision an alumni that fosters and facilitates connections amongst former students, staff and the community.
Please complete the contacts form on Bunbury Senior High School’s website, click on ‘Our School’ to access
the alumni area. Here you can submit a registration of interest form.
As former students and staff we value your opinion and encourage you to complete a short online survey. The
link to the survey is in the alumni area of BSHS. Alternatively, if you would like to be interviewed in person we
welcome you to send an email to [email protected]
