McAuley Day
Catherine McAuley was born near Dublin, Ireland on September 29, 1778. After the death of both her parents, Catherine
went to live with relatives who embodied the strong anti-Catholic atmosphere of the times. This was a difficult trial for
Catherine, but through it she developed a spirituality based on God's Mercy. She found "peace in the Cross, joy in
suffering, prayer in action and action in prayer" (Bolster, "Catherine McAuley"). Catherine sought to provide solace to sick
and needy families, to train young girls for employment and to instruct poor children.
When Catherine was twenty-five, a retired Quaker couple invited her to live with them. Catherine proved to be a loving
companion and holy example to them. On their death beds, they converted to Catholicism, and bequeathed their estate
to her. With this inheritance, Catherine built a house on Baggot Street in Dublin as a home for poor girls. This first Home
of Mercy opened on September 24, 1827, the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy. Her work with the poor and destitute led
Catherine to desire a life of total consecration to Our Lord. Encouraged by the Archbishop, Catherine and two other
women professed vows on December 12, 1831, and began the Religious Institute of the Sisters of Mercy. Often seen
walking the streets to serve the sick and the poor, the "walking nuns" inspired many women to dedicate themselves to
Christ and to the service of the Church, causing the Institute to spread rapidly.
By the time of Mother Catherine's death in 1841, there were 100 Sisters of Mercy in ten foundations. In April of 1990, in
completion of one stage of the process by which the Catholic Church defines sainthood, Pope John Paul II declared
Catherine McAuley "Venerable".
The legacy of union and charity and tender mercy to Christ's poor left by Mother Catherine to her daughters was kept
alive through the Constitutions she wrote, her letters, her poetry, and most of all her prayers. Mother Catherine was
gifted with a profound love of God, expressed in a deep love for her Sisters, and a tremendous sense of humour able to
help sustain others through difficult times. Her Suscipe expresses her surrender to the loving Mercy of God.

My God,
I am yours for time and eternity.
Lord, I am yours forever.
It is you must teach me to trust in your providence,
Loving Lord.
You are a God of love and tenderness.
I place my trust in you, O Lord,
and I ask that you grant me acceptance of your plan,
O Loving Lord.
Take from my heart all painful anxiety.
Let nothing sadden me but sin.
And then let my delight be hoping
to see your face, God my all.
Amen

MESSAGES FROM THE PRINCIPAL
ASSEMBLY
Our College Assembly this week provided the McAuley House Captains an opportunity to share with the community a
glimpse into the life and vision of their patron, Venerable Catherine McAuley. Thanks to Jesse Italiano, the McAuley
House had an ‘educational’ music track for their procession. Later in the day the McAuley House students were able to
enjoy time together at lunch and raise funds for various missions which are sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.
The assembly was also an opportunity to acknowledge student achievement in the Arts, Geography and Mathematics.

40TH ANNIVERSARY WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPH
We were very fortunate that the storms which hit Bunbury on Monday held off, allowing the photographer to take our
whole school photograph in the morning. It was disappointing that we were not able to have all students and staff
attend in the morning for the photograph, however, with the majority of our community present we will have a good
historical record of the staff and students in the College in this anniversary year.
ART EXTRAORDINAIRE
The Art Extraordinaire committee held their final meeting for the year with the Treasurer tabling her report. While
there are still some outstanding accounts to be paid, the 2013 Art Extraordinaire raised approximately $19 000 for
the College. It was also reported that the attendance numbers, especially on the opening night, were higher than last
year. As this annual event organised by our parents is both a fundraising and friend-raising event for the College, the
committee and the many volunteers can be very proud of their achievement for a successful exhibition achieving
both goals. Special thanks are extended to long serving committee members who are retiring this year after a mighty
effort: Elizabeth Harper ( Art Coordinator), Teeto Lombardo ( Bar Coordinator), Esther Gillingham and Sharyn Frazer
(Catering Coordinators) and Heather Zoetelief.
SPRING SPLENDA
Our talented Performing Arts students will be on stage this evening in their biannual concert. This creative
department will present a new format to entertain their audience and I would encourage all in our community to join
us this evening in the College Hall for a spectacular ‘Spring Splenda’.
God Bless you all.

COLLEGE NOTICES
YEAR 11 SCIENCE TRIP TO ALCOA - THURSDAY 12 SEPTEMBER
Our Stage 2 Earth and Environmental Science students and Chemistry students visited Alcoa’s Willowdale mine site
last Thursday. The purpose of the excursion was to study the mining of bauxite and the rehabilitation of the land. We
then travelled to Pinjarra for lunch and listened to a very interesting presentation from Mrs Suellen Davey who is one
of Alcoa’s Environmental Managers. Suellen is very passionate about managing the environment and minimising the
impact of both mining and processing. Our visit concluded with a tour of the refinery where our chemistry students
could see the Bayer process in action. Thank you to Mr Barraclough and Mrs Zuideveld who accompanied us on our
trip.
Mrs Wendy Morris
BOOK SWAP MEET FOR CURRENT YEAR 10, 11 & 12 STUDENTS - MONDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2013
Our Year 10 and 11 students will commence their 2014 courses on Wednesday 6 November 2013. New books will
need to be ordered through Campion online at www.campion.com.au before Friday 27 September 2013.
Secondhand books may be purchased through the ‘Book Swap Meet’ which will be held for our current Year 10, 11
and 12 students. This will take place on:
Date:
Monday 23 September
Venue:
Marist Sports Pavilion
Time:
10.30am to 2.00pm
This will enable parents/students to sell and purchase secondhand books. The Year 11 & 12 Booklists for 2014 are
available on our website: http://web1.bunburycatholic.wa.edu.au/cms/enrolment.
We understand that Year 11 and 12 students may still require their current text books until they have finished their
exams. In these instances, a sellers/buyers record list will need to be completed where you will be able to indicate the
price that you would like to obtain for the book. These forms will be available on the day.
OUTWARD ADVENTURE DISCOUNT
This year we are once again very fortunate to have Mountain Designs and Army Surplus on board, offering discounts to
our Year 10 students before their Outward Adventure Camp. Mountain Designs are offering 25% off Mountain Design
brands and 20% off all other brands. The Army Surplus store will be offering 10% off any items that are not already on
sale. Students will need to mention that they are Bunbury Catholic College Year 10 students, attending Outward
Adventure at the beginning of Term 4, to receive a discount.
Mr Paul Northover - Year 10 Coordinator
Iluka Visions Student Art Exhibition 2013
Iluka Visions has become a significant event on the South West arts calendar at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.
It provides secondary students with the opportunity to have their work displayed in a professional gallery space and
to be viewed by the local community. This year Bunbury Catholic College had its most successful year with a record
number of student entries being selected. Art teacher Mrs Tanya Downes was on the selection panel at the galleries
and believes the standard of our student work was high and that they should be proud of their efforts and
achievement. Congratulations must be extended to the following students whose work was selected for this
exhibition held at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries:
Year 8
Annellee Aguilar, Georgia Bach, Cameron Beynon, Nicolina Panetta.
Year 9
Shaehan House
Year 10
Laura Galati
Year 11
Aimee Dodds, Brittanie Harris, Keely Sheahan
Year 12
Amee Allan, Danielle Grasso, Emily Farr, Sophia Finucane
Year 12 (2012)

apply for The Nina’s Prize, a week’s Internship at the Prestigious Nina’s Jewellery in Dunsborough. The Exhibition
will be open for public viewing from Saturday 5 October until Sunday 24 November, so please go along and support

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION RESULTS
At the beginning of this term over 180 of our top academic students took part in the annual Australian Mathematics

across the globe. All of our students performed admirably on the day and were a credit to themselves and to the
Bunbury Catholic College community. While official certificates have not yet arrived, all students who participated will
be receiving acknowledgement of their performance. At this week’s College Assembly, we publicly congratulated the
very top performers in each year group. Congratulations to:

Students in the Spotlight
On Tuesday 10 September, the Bunbury Catholic College Art
Department hosted its annual “Students in the Spotlight”
Exhibition. This event showcased a very high standard of
student work and performances from our many learning
areas including Art, Dance, Media, Music, Business Skills,
Children’s Services, Design & Technology, English, Italian,
Indonesian, Science, Society & Environment and Religious Education. The successful evening was
testament to the time and effort BCC staff and students have committed to this year.
This year we invited special guest speakers to officially open the exhibition.
Parents, past students of BCC and prominent local artists, Nicole and
Alexander Mickle, graciously accepted our invitation and we sincerely thank
them for providing great insight into their experiences of the art industry,
captivating the audience and inspiring our current students in their future
aspirations in the Arts.
Due to the large number of student
works, this year proved to be a difficult
task for patrons to choose their
favourite artwork for the People’s
Choice Art & Media Awards. For Visual Arts there were awards
for Years 9 to 12 and after close competition, congratulations
must be extended to Hannah Bolwell (Year 12), Keely Sheahan
(Year 11), Isabel Glover (Year 10) and Elliott Todesco (Year 9).
For the People’s Choice Media Award the winners were Casey
Gulberti (Year 10) and Mitchell Creasey (Year 12). The quality of
work this year was outstanding and all students should be very
proud of their achievements and their inclusion in this exhibition.
My sincerest gratitude must be extended to Mrs Tanya Downes
and Ms Maria Delle Donne, who form the rest of the Art
Department. Their time and expertise were instrumental in the
exhibitions’ coordination and ensuing success. Thank you to the
numerous College staff and students whose time and assistance
made this event possible, in
particular, Mrs Karen Walker,
Ms Stephanie Hart, Mrs Cally
Yates, Mrs Jane Smith, Mrs Gill
Alietti, Mr Rodney Slater, Mr Barry Gartrell, Mr Ollie Maratea,
Ms Kym Whitney, Mr Luke Campbell and Ms Rowie Sutton,
Maintenance staff and Mrs Lucy Henfry for her student baristas’
amazing service of fine
coffee and cake. Thanks
must also be extended to the P&F Association for their
continued financial assistance and to the Bunbury Catholic
College community for their tremendous support of the
exhibition opening. We look forward to an even bigger
“Students in the Spotlight” in 2014.
Ms Brenda Della-Sale - Head of Learning, Arts
TAX FILE NUMBERS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO), with the cooperation of schools, offers students aged thirteen years or over the
opportunity to apply for a tax file number (TFN) through their school. This is a voluntary program and makes it easier for
students to obtain a TFN. Students need a TFN for employment, applying for Centrelink benefits, opening a bank account,
managing their superannuation or deferring university fees.
Applying for a TFN through school is easier because students do not need to show identifying documentation to the ATO.
The application form is available from the College and students can complete it at home. The form requires information
such as the student’s name, address and date of birth. Students also need to provide the following details:

Students born in Australia will need to provide their
Birth Certificate number, state of issue and year of registration, or
Australian passport number and date of issue.

Students born overseas will need to provide their
Overseas passport number and country of issue, or
Australian citizenship certificate number and date of issue, or
Australian passport number and date of issue.
It is important that the application form is fully completed and signed by the student. All information provided on the form
will remain confidential.
The College will certify the application form by cross-checking against the information held on their records. Students are
not required to show identifying documentation to the school or the ATO.
Students will receive their TFN from the ATO via a notification letter sent to their postal address. This will be sent within
twenty eight days of the application being received by the ATO.
Students who wish to apply for a TFN should collect an application form from the College’s Administration Office.

Healthy Lifestyle Tip - Choose healthy snacks
Potato chips, salted nuts, candies, cookies and other tasty stuff are
definitely unhealthy for your body. They contain lots of fat, salt and
sugar. Choose raw nuts, fresh fruits or berries instead as they are rich
in vitamins and minerals.
