Newsletter No. 30 Week 10 As each of our Year 11 and 12 students prepare for the upcoming examinations, we pray: Lord, I know you are with me and love me. Give me peace of mind as I prepare for this time of study. Help me to focus on my books and notes, keep me from all distractions so that I will make the best use of this time that is available to me. Give me insight that I might understand what I am studying , and help me to remember it when the time comes. Above all, I thank you for the ability to be able to study and for the many gifts and talents you have given me. Amen MESSAGES FROM THE PRINCIPAL We have been saddened by news of Mr John Walker’s unexpected illness and death last weekend. Mr Walker was Principal of St Anne’s School in Harvey following his twelve years of service at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Bunbury. We wish to acknowledge the great contribution Mr Walker made to the Bunbury community and to the BCC community as a parent of former students of our College. Mr Walker will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time. DANCE CONCERT Congratulations to our Dance and Drama students on their very entertaining concert on Tuesday evening. It is always pleasing to see our students display the high standard of their work and to see so many students assisting as backstage and technical crew and in compering the event. Our thanks are extended to Ms Whitney for the enormous effort she has put in to the dance program and organising this event, Mrs Karen Walker for the wonderful outfits and the many staff members who assisted. YEAR 12 Our Year 12 students are moving closer to the end of their secondary education and were able to celebrate this important phase of their life at the Year 12 Mass on Wednesday morning. This was a moving ceremony which linked to their retreat experience earlier in the year. Our thanks are extended to Fr Tony Chiera who joined us to make this liturgy a very meaningful experience. Next term, those Year 12 students who are studying for final WACE examinations will return for formal classes as a preparation for the examinations. Students who have not completed all assessment tasks for their courses are expected to return in Term 4 to submit their work. Students who are not sitting WACE exams and have completed all assessment work for their courses are not required to attend school, but are encouraged to arrange work placements for experience and to assist them in their applications for employment or further training. Please keep our Year 12 students in your prayers as they commence their final school examinations this week and for those students who will be completing their final practical WACE examinations in the coming weeks. ART EXTRAORDINAIRE This week the Art Extraordinaire committee held their final gathering for the year, providing an opportunity to debrief on the running of the 2014 Art Extraordinaire and to plan for 2015. While there are still some accounts to be paid, the event this year has raised over $19 000 which will provide various resources in our school. Some of these funds will provide furniture for the new Learning Commons which will be completed in the coming term. This event is a great community event for our school and I would encourage our parents to consider assisting in some capacity next year. Once again, I wish to express my gratitude to the committee members and all who supported this event this year. FAREWELL As we conclude our term we say farewell and thanks to Mrs Caroline Turner and Mrs Alison Lanigan who have concluded their contracts, Mrs Mamta Parmar and Mr Craig Gorddard who commence their long service leave and Mr Greg Chipchase who will commence his long service leave in Term 4 when his Year 12 class commence their WACE examination. This has been an extremely busy term and I am grateful to all staff, students and parents for their continued support and efforts on behalf of every student in our College. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the coming break and return refreshed for the final term. God Bless you all. This event attracted competitors from schools such as Newton Moore SHS and Australind SHS. The BCC team comprised Josef Bandera, Rachel Parker, Jakeb Lancaster, Christian Trowles and Leon Wolters. Our team bowled superbly and were great ambassadors for our school. Rachel Parker finished third in the girls and received a Bronze medal for her efforts. Jakeb Lancaster bowled brilliantly and recorded five strikes. His performance earned him second place and a silver medal. Mrs Ketteridge also bowled very well and was the champion women bowler at the tournament. It was a great day and we look forward to competing at the next tournament. Mr David Phillips - Acting Head of Learning Area, Literacy and Support WOMEN IN MINING AND RESOURCES WA SEMINAR 2014 The College was fortunate to be offered tickets for students to attend the Women in Mining and Resources WA (WIMWA) seminar entitled ‘Communication, confidence and change’. Kaitlyn Castafaro (Year 10) was selected to attend and she wrote the following report… On Friday 12 September, a one-day seminar was held at the Hyatt Hotel in Perth to promote the increase of women in mining related jobs. Over 500 women attended this conference, many from the big mining companies such as Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. Numerous speakers educated the audience on the psychology behind the conscious and unconscious bias that occurs in the workplace as well as ways to make yourself heard and give yourself the confidence to do your best. The whole atmosphere was supportive with everyone looking out for each other and especially the fourteen to fifteen schoolgirls that attended. The women who were there were more than willing to answer any questions that we had and at the end of the day we came away with the knowledge that the mining and resource industry is changing for the better in terms of closing the gender gap and stopping bias. This is a great and beneficial opportunity for any girl who wishes to follow a career in the mining and resources industry. Magpie Nesting Season is from August to October and it is not uncommon for magpies to defend their nests and young during this time by swooping intruders. The following steps can be followed to avoid or reduce the impact of a swooping Magpie: Never deliberately provoke or harass a Magpie. Throwing sticks or stones at Magpies usually makes them more defensive. Avoid areas where Magpies are known to swoop. Remember, Magpie aggression lasts only a few weeks and Magpies usually only defend a small area of about 100m radius around their nest. Locate the bird and keep watching it when entering a Magpie territory. If it swoops, don’t crouch in fear or stop: move quickly but don’t run. If you are riding a bike dismount and walk through nesting Magpie territory, wear a helmet, and fit an orange traffic flag to the bike. Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry a stick or umbrella to protect yourself. A Magpie will attack from behind initially. When a Magpie is tricked into believing the target is alert, the attack may stop or may not even get started. Adopt a confident stance towards the bird as this can have a strong deterrent effect. This response is most commonly used by adults but can easily be taught to children. Learning to live with magpies can be rewarding. You can observe local magpies, study their behaviour, and listen to their songs. We share the same living space. Learning to live together is an important step towards building a better living environment. Representative Teams – 1 or 2 - depending on coach availability, from across both campuses, will be selected at designated trials. New year groups (Years 7 and 8 in 2015) – 1 or 2 rep teams, then remaining teams will be graded and placed into teams – with some consideration of campus origin/competition preference location – if applicable. Existing year groups (Year 9 – 12 in 2015) – 1 or 2 rep teams, then remaining students compose their own teams and source a coach, nominate preferred competition and then submit these for registration to the club. Rep 1 teams are selected in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and Open (Touring Team). These teams are allocated a coach and compete as a team in Pre-members, Association Member’s Carnival, High Schools Cup and possibly Regional age carnivals. They also play in other school related events. Rep 2 teams will be selected if coaches can be sourced. If a coach can be confirmed for a particular year level prior to trials, we can select accordingly. These teams play High Schools Cup and attend school related events. The Marist Netball Club caters for BCC students only. However, if a team requires a player, we may, allow students from outside the College to join a team, ensuring adequate numbers. ALL Marist teams are required to wear the College netball uniform. We have registered our uniform and colours with the appropriate organisations and are expected to wear the appropriate uniforms with those colours. In 2014 we took Rep 1 and 2 teams from Year 9 and 10 to a Gold Coast carnival during the April holidays. This will continue to be the case in 2016, 2018… whether we have 1 or 2 rep teams in either or both year groups. Representative team players are subject to a representative policy through the College in addition to the code of conduct presented by the club. This is provided to players involved in these particular teams, as some activities impact on school time. The Marist Netball Club enters teams in both the Bunbury (Friday night/Saturday afternoon) and Leschenault (Friday night) Netball Association competitions.
