Message From The Principal
Greetings Chief Family,
Thank you to all parents who attended our grade level parent training in January and February.
This opportunity allowed understanding the expectations of upcoming assessments, graduation
requirements, curriculum sequencing and more. In addition, updated student data chat forms
were given to parents to monitor and track their students’ progress. Please look out for a flyer
on our spring curriculum night in April. More information will be sent at a later date.
School grades were released earlier this month and Santaluces earned a letter grade of “B”
from the Florida Department of Education. This rating is based on the results from 2014-15
accountability results. Even though our school grade dropped one letter grade, I am pleased
with the performance of our students. Our teachers and staff members worked extremely hard
in preparation for the assessments. As mentioned in the parent letter sent home from Dr. Avossa,
Superintendent, the school grading formula changed from years past and learning gain were not
a part of the equation. Only proficiency scores were included. Below, you will find the data from all
Title I schools in the district and how we compared to schools with similar demographics.

This is a very important time of the year. We are preparing for this year’s upcoming state
assessments, AP/AICE, EOCs and school-wide SAT. The SAT was administered to all 11th
grade students at no cost on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. It was a great opportunity for juniors
to start receiving their college readiness scores. The FSA Writing assessment is underway. All
students in grades 9 and 10, as well as 11th grade re-take students are taking this exam.
In closing, I encourage you to attend our SAC meetings which are held the 3rd Wednesday of
each month in the Media Center at 6:00 p.m. Your input and suggestions are always welcome.
As mentioned, the students are working very hard and spring break is approaching. It is my
hope everyone have a wonderful spring break vacation. I look forward to seeing you all at some
of our school events.

and Crests promotes esprit de corps and keeps
alive historical traditions and significance of

Santaluces High School Debate Team placed third in our annual (tri-county) Regional
– Ethics Bowl! The competition was held at Palm Beach State College on Saturday,

Santaluces Surging in Boys Hoops Following Rocky Start
LANTANA —
Santaluces started the 2015-16 boys basketball season in much the same way it ended its previous season. The Chiefs
dropped four of their final eight games last season to finish 12-13, then opened this season with consecutive losses. Both
were district games. Santaluces coach Reggie Dixon, however, didn’t panic. Neither did his players.
After starting 0-2, the Chiefs turned things around quickly. Santaluces won its next six games before falling to state-ranked St.
Andrew’s Dec. 12, and then went on to win the district championship eight weeks later. Those two early district losses were
the only setbacks for the Chiefs in 10-8A this season. Santaluces finished 10-2 in district play and clinched the championship

Thursday, February 11th. Dixon, who is in his sixth season as Santaluces’ head coach and 18th overall, said chemistry was a
big factor in the Chiefs’ turnaround this season. “The kids played together,” he said. “Last year, we had a lot of individuals, no
team concept. This year we had more of a team concept.”
It would have been difficult to navigate District 10-8A without that. The seven-team district, which changed slightly this year
after off-season realignment, included a few teams with district championship hopes. Lake Worth and Boca Raton, seeded
No. 2 and No. 3 in last week’s district tournament, were ranked in the top 10 all season. John I. Leonard and Park Vista were
competitive, while Atlantic and Spanish River also won district games. “It was very tough,” Dixon said. “We’re probably the
biggest team size-wise in the district. We have to use our height advantage. Plus, we have athletes also. We weren’t just big
and slow. We have athletes who can change the pace and push the ball. We lost the first two games of the season, and then
we turned it around. The kids did a great job.” Dixon said the Chiefs’ four seniors, in particular, played a key role in leading the
team into the playoffs. Sean Dinkins, Shaun O’Connor, Job Jean-Baptiste and Mark Sajous set an example for Santaluces’
younger players, particularly with their leadership and unselfish play. “Like I’ve been saying since day one, we’ve got to do
this together,” Dixon said. “You can’t have any selfishness. You play together and make that extra pass. That’s been the key.”
