The mission of the Center for Puppetry Arts®
is to touch lives through the art of puppetry.
The Center uses the art form of puppetry as a means to provide
educational experiences that encourage creativity, support schoolday learning, fuel holistic development, and provide accessible,
hands-on opportunities to participate in arts activities. The Center’s
live puppetry performances, interactive workshops, and guided
museum tours provide creative arts experiences to students that
aren’t available in classrooms while also providing teachers with
opportunities to infuse the arts into their curriculum goals.

What an exciting year it has been! Through your
generosity, the Center for Puppetry Arts has continued to
serve thousands of children and adults with programming
of value. Our performances, educational programs, and
museum services have made a big difference
in so many lives. Two very important themes
emerged from our work this year: engaging new
audiences and collaborating with new partners.
Two new projects helped us expand our usual range.
Influenced
by
international
discussions
on
child-centered theatrical experiences for pre-schoolaged and younger audiences, known as “Theatre for
the Very Young”, the Center created a new work, The
Tortoise, The Hare, and Other Aesop’s Fables. The
production was positively received by parents, educators,
and most importantly toddlers! Branching into a different
age group, the Center was honored to host the 2nd Annual
National Puppetry Slam, which showcased the best shortform, adult puppetry works from across the U.S. These soldout shows not only introduced our local audiences to new
puppetry communities from across our nation, but
also helped the Center to continue offering exemplary
programming for adults combating the illusion that
puppetry is simply an art form for children.
Our Distance Learning program partnered with Texas
A&M University and the National Science Foundation to
develop criteria for teaching mathematics and geometry
to elementary students; the resulting project introduced
students to origami, to create a puppet that was used to
explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and
math) skills. The PNC Foundation and the LEGO Children’s
Fund both supported two new Educational programs
focusing on improving our work with Pre-schoolers and
Pre-K students. Each of these programs helped us
improve how we engage with our youngest patrons and
allowed us to share some best-practices with educators,
who learned how to better use puppetry and storytelling in
their classrooms.
This year, we were ecstatic to introduce our local
community to our new mascot, Sockly. This energetic,
8-foot-tall “sock puppet” makes his large and loveable
appearance at local festivals and other fun events.
Of course, there’s so much more that happened this year:
including two new exhibits and a prestigious international
trip by some of our Education staff to the exotic country
of Bahrain. Keep reading to find out about these fun and
exciting happenings.
But, before you learn more, let me take a moment to
thank you for contributing to the success of this past
season. Please know that our accomplishments were made
possible only through you and your generosity.

2012-13 center performers
the tortoise, the hare, and other aesop’s fables
“Theater for the Very Young” is a child-centered theatrical experience that invites our
youngest audience members to engage in the world around them in new ways. It trusts that
these children need and want to think, explore, question, learn, and expand. It celebrates the
unique developmental process of pre-schoolers by applying creativity and learning to live
performances in age-specific ways. The key is creating work that doesn’t hinge too much on
text or complicated plotlines. Children under the age of 6 respond much stronger to visual and
sonic cues, bright colors, physical play, and interaction. Aesop’s Fables was written for this age
group, with very simple words, overt performers, live music, bright colors, constant ingenuity
of style and mechanism, and as much interaction as we can create in the Downstairs Theater.

The Center received a New Generations Program – Future Leaders grant from Theatre
Communications Group (TCG). The grant funded a two-year mentorship under the Center’s
Artistic Director, Jon Ludwig. Michael Haverty, the Center’s Artistic Associate and Ludwig’s
mentee, directed The Tortoise, the Hare, and other Aesop’s Fables in autumn 2012, the Center’s
second “Theatre for the Very Young” production.
Offering an early childhood production allows families with preschool-aged children to enjoy
the Center while older children are in school.
The Tortoise, the Hare, and other Aesop’s Fables was inspired by five of Aesop’s fables:
“The Lion and the Mouse,” “Country Mouse, City Mouse,” “The Fox and the Crane,” “The Ant
and the Grasshopper,” and “The Tortoise and the Hare.”

national puppet slam
The National Puppet Slam is a curated presentation of the best short-form,
adult puppetry pieces from across the country. It began in 2011 at the biannual
Puppeteers of America Festival. Thanks to funding from the Puppet Slam
Network, the Center was able to host the 2012 National Puppet Slam, during an
“off” year for the Puppeteers of America festival.
In two sold-out performances, the 2012 National Puppet Slam featured ten acts
nominated by local puppet slam curators from across the country. These acts
represented the full spectrum of puppetry styles and highlighted the top notch
skills of the artists working in the field today.
The Slam also provided opportunities for professional development. The artists
took part in a round table discussion with Center Production staff members Jon
Ludwig, Jason von Hinezmeyer, and Kristin Haverty. The Center also hosted the
National Performance Network’s “Doing it on the Road” presentation for the
artists, which covered the logistics of touring as a performance artist.
xperimental puppetry theater
(xpt)
Sponsored by Turner Voices, XPT is a long-running
Center program that invites professional and emerging
artists to explore and experiment by creating original puppet
theater for adult audiences. Artists submit their innovative
ideas and, once chosen, work with other XPT participants of
various artistic backgrounds and talents to bring their
vision to life. After three intense months of collaboration
and creation, the teams present their work onstage for
one weekend only. Every performance concludes with a
talkback between the audience and the artists.

Many children are only able to experience arts and cultural programming through
organized field trips. The Center for Puppetry Arts Field Trip Sponsorship Program,
through the support of caring donors, provides deeply discounted and free tickets
to Title I schools and other organizations serving children and youth. Many schools
depend on this program to make their field trips possible and without it could not
afford to provide their students with enriching exposure to the arts.
In 2012-13, more than 70,000 children and their chaperones participated in Center
programs because of Field Trip Sponsorship donors.
We are particularly grateful to the following donors for their gifts of $10,000 or more:

PNC grow up great
preschool puppetry playshop
The PNC Foundation supported Center for Puppetry Arts
programming for pre-school and pre-K students at three Atlanta area
Sheltering Arms locations to specifically address school readiness,
particularly as it relates to underserved children and their families.
This project included six Distance Learning puppetry programs, as
well as ten outreach puppetry workshops presented at the abovementioned Sheltering Arms childcare centers, a teacher training
webinar, and opportunities for students from these classes to visit the
Center with their family. This grant from the PNC Foundation allowed
the Center to expand its programming for pre-school children and
supported the Center’s commitment to making programs accessible
to children of all backgrounds.
A $5,000 grant from the LEGO Children’s Fund supported the
development of four Preschool Puppetry Playshops, a series of
programs targeting early learners and offering programming
specifically for children ages 2 to 4. These programs support
early childhood literacy and address a number of Georgia Pre-K
“Bright from the Start” Content Standards and Georgia Performance
Standards for Kindergarten.

More than 500 children have been reached in the first 9 months of
offering the program. In addition to reaching new audiences
of preschoolers, these workshops have served as a professional
development opportunity for early childhood educators. By observing

as they led these Playshops,
educators have learned how
to use puppetry as a storytelling tool, how to create an
engaging story session for
pre-schoolers, and how to
interact with young children,
with and without a puppet in
hand.
The development of this
programming has allowed the
Center to say “yes” to more
requests for teacher training,
exposed Center programming
to more teachers, and allowed
the Center to create new synergy with early childhood educators. It has helped the Center to
remain competitive and at the
forefront of arts programming
for young children.

14 and older through workshops, lectures, demos, and intensive hands-on

expertise in all aspects of puppetry arts.

distance learning and
texas a&m university collaboration:
folding up: a stem-based puppet show
In collaboration with Texas A & M University Dept. of Mechanical
Engineering, the Center’s Distance Learning Department received
funding from the National Science Foundation to develop
curricula for teaching STEM concepts and career opportunities to
underrepresented elementary students. The result is a live, interactive,
origami-themed program for students in grades 2nd through 5th.
“Folding Up: A STEM-based Puppet Show” features Aggie, a piece of
animated origami paper, who explores STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and math) careers and the scientific method with the help of
her teacher, family, and scientists from Texas A & M University.

movin’ and groovin’ health series
In 2012, to support the Healthy Children Initiative, the Center’s
Distance Learning Program set out to develop a series of puppetry
performances focused on health and fitness, Movin’ and Groovin’
with Little Noodle. With a grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation,
the Center began work on the first performance in this series, “Mr.
Kolache’s Long List.”
The Center piloted performances in April and May 2013 for 1st and
2nd graders at schools in Louisiana, Nebraska, New York, and South
Carolina. The feedback was largely positive, with consistently high
ratings for the show’s engaging qualities and impact on student
learning. Center staff fine-tuned the script and performance with
the assistance of health consultants from Emory University’s Rollins
School of Public Health.
“Mr. Kolache’s Long List” is now one of more than 20 Distance
Learning programs and performances offered by the Center. To
date, more than 700 students at 19 schools have enjoyed this live
interactive performance delivered via videoconference.

Thanks to the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of
Cultural Affairs and their matching grant through
Power2Give.org, the Center was able to fund the
creation of a dynamic, walk-around mascot
character to improve outreach efforts and to attend
more community events. Conceptualized, designed,
and built by the Center’s talented artistic team,
Sockly is a giant sock puppet ready to bring fun and
smiles to any community event or festival. Sockly
debuted at the Center’s celebration of National Day of
Puppetry in April, 2013.

In July 2012, Aretta Baumgartner (Education
Director), Jeff Domke (Education Coordinator), and
Patty Petrey Dees (Distance Learning Program
Director) represented the Center for Puppetry Arts
as guest at the Bahrain Summer Festival. Sponsored
by the Bahrain Ministry of Culture and Information
(Education Division), the team provided puppetry workshops and presentations to thousands of
children and their families in the south central
region of the Arabian Peninsula as a part of a monthlong festival. This important international exchange
was a testament to the power of puppetry as a
bridge between cultures and as communication that
supercedes language barriers.

outreach programming
The Center offers numerous engaging and educational puppetry programs that can be tailored to a group’s specific needs. These workshops and
presentations can be hosted at the Center or at the client’s location, thus enabling high-quality puppetry programming to reach audiences who are
unable to travel to the Center. All workshops support educational standards across the curriculum! Outreach programs include:
• ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE EXPERIENCE: A visit by a professional Puppeteer/Teaching Artist that enables a customized, in-depth, puppetry immersion experience.
• DISCOVERING PUPPETRY IN OTHER CULTURES: A presentation highlighting
puppetry traditions from around the world including China, India, Japan,
Indonesia, and Mali.
• PRESCHOOL PUPPETRY PLAYSHOP: A high-energy childhood literacy workshop
for children ages two to four that can enhance motor skills, increase language and
social skills, and develop self-confidence.
• PUPPET FACTORY: A puppet-making activity perfect for festivals and
promotional events.
• PUPPET INVENTION WORKSHOP: An exploration of different puppetry styles,
celebrate the history of the art of puppetry, create an exciting puppet of your own,
and bring that puppet to life by learning basic puppet manipulation!
• PUPPET MANIPULATION 101: A workshop that teaches performance techniques
to school groups, church groups, community groups, and others.
The Center provided more than 80 outreach workshops and special onsite
workshops in 2012-2013. Highlights include programs for the National
Creative Problem Solving Institute, Savannah College of Art & Design Atlanta, Coretta
Scott King Book Fair, National Black Arts Festival, North Fulton Community Charities,
Childrens Health Care of Atlanta, DragonCon, Reynolds Plantation, Bay Street Theatre
(Savannah), Georgia Thespian Conference, Alliance Theatre Families Center Stage, and
the International Thespian Festival.

Each summer Jeff Domke, the Center’s Education Program Coordinator, is an
Artist-in-Residence at Camp Kudzu, which provides education, recreation, and
peer-networking programs for Georgia children living with Type 1 diabetes.
Domke conducted puppetry workshops on the history, construction, and
manipulation of several puppet styles, techniques, and forms. Each workshop offered an
opportunity for the camper to create a unique puppet that allows the camper to learn, grow,
and explore through puppetry. Puppetry workshops at Camp Kudzu also promote
high self-esteem and a sense of control, important traits to encourage since one of the
hallmarks of serious illnesses is that children often experience a lack of control.

The Center added a new, specialized Museum tour this year
focused on engaging children pre-K through 3rd grade in an exciting
exhibit-based experience. The tour, “Puppeteer Fit,” encompassed
puppetry and physical health by teaching students about the
necessary balance, strength, and flexibility that is required of a
puppeteer.
On the tour, children learned how to become
“puppeteer fit” by journeying through the museum and practicing
the kinesthetic motions used in performing various types
of puppets.

This rotating exhibit, unveiled as part of the Center’s 34th
anniversary celebration, featured Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster
and Cepot, a Panakawan from the Indonesian Wayang Golek rod
puppetry tradition.
This exhibit highlighted these common
components of puppetry as a storytelling art form by comparing
two puppets from diverse uses and backgrounds. The exhibit also
allowed patrons to begin to understand the way that the work of
Jim Henson relates to the larger global picture of puppetry.
Puppeteers everywhere - from Africa to South
America - use animals to tell stories about their culture,
traditions, and everyday life.
This new exhibit
featured animal puppets from these various cultures
and reflected how these creatures have delighted
audiences the world over for generations.

discovery days
Select Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Autumn 2012 became “Discovery Days” at the Center for
Puppetry Arts as patrons enjoyed intimate, interactive programs that highlighted puppet
traditions in cultures across Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Activities included:
• From Story to Stage: an interactive storytelling/puppetry experience
• Puppet Creation Station: a puppet-building workshop inspired by the Center’s popular Create-APuppet Workshops
• Discovery Cart: an interactive, mobile Museum experience bringing to life community and/or
theatrical celebrations found in the cultures of focus
• Discovery Trek: a specialized tour of the Museum exhibits
Appropriate for guests of all ages, the program was tailored each day to suit the educational and
artistic needs of the patrons in attendance. Guests could come for one or all of the activities, and
were encouraged to have their “passports” stamped and return for future Discovery Days. Though
patrons of all types enjoyed Discovery Days, scout and home school groups in particular were
excited by the intimate and in-depth nature of the programming.

The Film Series showcased puppets on the big screen – celebrating the art of puppetry as captured
by the camera. Featuring classic movies, hidden gems, and contemporary productions, the Film
Series explored puppetry through narratives, documentaries, and short films.

volunteer & internship programs
The
2012-2013
season
brought
significant
growth to the Center’s Volunteer and Internship
Programs. This year more than 120 volunteers and
9 interns gave approximately 3,742 hours of their
time—an increase of 85.5% from the previous year!
Volunteers were an essential component to the
success of our everyday operations and special
events. These dedicated individuals worked on
such activities as: assisting with Create-A-Puppet
Workshops, house managing for performances,
archiving in the research library, administrative
tasks in every department, volunteering at special
events, and working with the Center staff to make
every patron experience the best it could be.
According to IndependentSector.org, the monetary
value of a volunteer hour in Georgia was $20.77. At
this rate, our volunteers and interns impacted our
organization to the tune of $77,721 for this fiscal year.
The Center was once again chosen as one of
the nonprofit organizations to participate in the
Atlanta Track Club’s Marathon Adopt-a-Mile
program. Center volunteers helped earn a grant
of $7,000 for educational supplies by assisting at a
Marathon aid station and by encouraging runners at
our puppet cheer zone.

The Center has established a new, in-depth 12-week training program for Museum Docents —
volunteers who help inspire patrons to explore and learn about the artifacts on display in the Center’s
museum exhibits. Five docents graduated from the first training, with more sessions planned in the
2013-2014 year.

volunteered a total of 259 hours -assisting the Education department
with workshops and other projects.
