Industrial resolutions – What can you expect from 2016? - Gay Times
Once again we are on the verge of a New year with revolution on our minds.
What will be hot in home? And where should we be looking for inspiration in the coming year?
2015 in the design world has been about Craft vs technology. Our animal roots against our
developed scientific minds. Never before has this tension, that characterises our current design
era, been so strongly felt. We are torn.
So perhaps 2016 will be about industry – the meeting of craft and technology in harmony. A new
industrial revolution if you will, to reclaim Britain’s heritage and reinvigorate the craftsmanship in
our hearts with new digital technologies.
For several years in interiors, as property has become so highly prized and developers have been
taking on industrial buildings to create stunning homes, we have seen the rise of industrial chic. In
its popularity it’s become a parody of itself with mock industrial products popping up everywhere.
But with the new movement of craftsmanship taking hold, it has developed into something far
more refined, and in 2016 it will take centre stage.
A more modern, refined industrial style is about to
arrive and it has a glamorous edge.
Based in the north of England, Novocastrian is a fine example of what you should be looking out for
in 2016.
With their backgrounds in architecture and their heritage in metal work, the duo have crafted a
collection of furniture that redefines the industrial look. Their mix of materials, blackened steel
with polished brass, and their technical skill in manipulating the material, giving fine lines, means
that their work is full of history but at the cutting edge. We met co-founder, Richy Almond, for a
casual coffee to talk about his work and a nicer man you couldn’t meet. Surely one to watch.
Another fine man on our radar is Daniel Heath – artist, craftsman and gentleman. This ‘red hot’ guy
based in East London is making waves with his refined prints.
He hand prints his designs on wallpaper or fabric and even etches them onto reclaimed slate. The
traditional skills he uses to create his products meet with the technical skill of his designs to create
some stunning artisan surfaces. We NEED your wallpaper Daniel.
Viva la Revolution. Big up to British craftsmanship with an industrial edge. Support your local
talent and give your home some edge at the same time.Don’t compromise on quality in 2016. It

may hark back to the times of the industrial revolution as a concept, but saving up your hard
earned pennies to invest in something you love is not out of date. Quality is worth it.
Here’s to a quality new year in all your homes.
