The only thing better than a great idea is a great idea whose time has come. Why is Johannes Gutenberg popularly remembered as the father of movable type printing, even though a Chinese inventor named Bi Sheng actually came up with the idea back in the Song Dynasty, five centuries earlier? Because for Gutenberg, the time was ripe. For starters, seen through the lens of today’s technologists, Gutenberg had the easier programming language: German. With only 26 characters he was able to cut costs and complexity to a degree that Bi Sheng, grappling with thousands of Chinese characters, would have envied. Gutenberg also had the ultimate killer app: religion (the Gutenberg Bible being one of those enduring bestsellers). Being the son of a wealthy merchant didn’t hurt; it gave him access to dad’s rich friends who, with an initial 800-guilder investment, became early venture capitalists. That these same investors then kicked him out, sued him and ran off with the business, doesn’t take away from the fact that the right dynamics Issue67|www.iRecyclingTimes.com were in play for Gutenberg’s method to make a splash: technologies, markets and capital all aligned in fifteenth century Europe for movable type printing to explode across the continent. 560 years and countless innovations later, we find ourselves at yet another exciting moment in print history: we’re betting our proverbial guilders not on movable type but on mobility itself. Unleashing a print job simply by tapping a mobile device is surely an idea whose time has come. In fact it’s been coming for some time. The first mobile print applications date back almost a decade and a half, even predating the popularization of the smartphone (a time that for many of us seems almost as long ago as the Song Dynasty). But has mobile printing had its “Gutenberg moment”? Mobile printing in the pre-smartphone era was a niche application, but in today’s age of the do-everything mobile device, the signs are auspicious. 2 billion people own smartphones today, and within 5 years analysts at venture capitalist firm Andreessen Horowitz predict that virtually every human on earth will have a smartphone. This rate of adoption MOBILE PRINTING 35 RINTING READY FOR POPULAR PORTABLE PRINTERS In c, < in fo @ dr ivv e.c o m > E OFF r, CE O, Dr ivv e, HP Officejet 150 Mobile Th ilo Lu tz ele Canon PIXMA iP110 Epson WF-100 is profoundly shaping the workforce, with research firm IDC suggesting that nearly 40% of the world’s workforce is now mobile. In countries like the US, that share is even higher and likely to exceed two thirds of the workforce within 5 years. Some verticals, like healthcare, are already closing in on those rates today. An additional accelerator on these trends is the demographic shift in the labor force: the Pew Research Center reports that as of this year Millennials, the tech savviest generation of workers yet, represent the largest share of the US labor force. A workforce that expects to do everything on a mobile device also demands an expedient mobile printing feature. From the user’s perspective, the mobile printing value proposition certainly sounds compelling. As with all things mobile, it centers on convenience and productivity: print as needed, anytime, anywhere, from any smart device without fiddling around with printer drivers, IP addresses, etc. Given all that promise, it’s worth considering why actual adoption rates of mobile printing have been slow to rise. Broadly stated, research shows that businesses have long reported an interest in the idea of mobile printing but are only now starting to put their money where their mouths are. Before delving into the details, it’s worth cross-examining the macro trends: yes, Millennials (those born between the early 1980s and 2000) love their handheld devices, and yes, they will dominate the workforce in the years to come… but has anyone ever seen a Millennial actually print anything? For that matter, has anyone ever seen a Millennial actually hold a piece of paper in his or her hand? Stated differently, will mobile printing explode like other segments of the mobile economy or will it develop at a measured pace like other segments of the printing economy? Let’s look at what the number crunchers have to say. Data gathered by research firm Quocirca suggests that as of late 2014, only about 14% of large companies in advanced economies had deployed mobile printing in their organizations (up from 5% in 2012), while 73% were thinking about doing so. More interestingly, 35% of surveyed firms said they plan to www.iRecyclingTimes.com|Issue67 Canon MG2920 Brother J4620DW Polaroid - ZIP Mobile Printer Fujifilm Instax Share SP-1 VuPoint Photo Cube Canon SELPHY CP910 Polaroid Grey Label GL10 Instant Mobile Printer LG's Pocket Photo Printer MOBILE PRINTING 37 What would Gutenberg say today about mobile printing? deploy a mobile print solution this year.
