EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
.l:ly me tune t!llS l6sue or \J:.l'.::;..N. IS pnnte<l., some very
important decisions· will have been taken at a meeting of
the National's Sub-Committee.
This Sub-Committee has been appointed by the
Executive Committee to look at all aspects of the running
of National Championships. Now that three separate
series are conducted - Trap, Slteet and Olympic Discipline
Nationals, the recommendations made by the SubCommittee become even more important.
One of the major recommendations will cover the
rotation of Nationals between the States. The Trap
Nationals in Perth in 1985 are the last ones on the current
roster, so the Sub-Committee will be deliberating at some
length on that problem. Questions arise each year on the
program format at each Nationals, trophies, cash awards,
medals, sponsorship, the use of re-loads, and many other
points.
The Sub-Committee's recommendations will be put to
the Executive Committee when it next meets following the
Skeet Nationals on November 18.
*
*
*
The 1984 Skeet Nationals will be conducted at
Melbourne Gun Club from Wednesday November 14, to
Saturday November 17. A change to the program this year
is the running of the Grand Australian Skeet Handicap of
50 targets. Three 50 target Championships will be
conducted, as well as the Commonwealth and National
Skeet Championships of 100 targets.
Enjoy your shooting,

THE 1984 LOS ANGELES OLYMPICS
Peter Quire, Olympic Shooting Team Coach
.....""lII!IiilI
On behalf of myself and the team members I would lilte
to thank all of you who sent the shooting team members
telegrams or messages of good luck. They were greatlyappreciated and lifted morale.
The clay target shooters of Australia have every reason to
be proud of their Olympic representatives. Jiin Ellis, Terry
Rumbel, Ian Hale and Alex Crikis. I am, both as their coach
and as an Australian.
In Olympic competition official placings go down to
eighth (8) place, so we have three of our four man team in
the official Olympic placings, this is indeed an excellent
result, especially considering the size of the fields in the
trap and skeet events. 71 in trap and 70 in skeet. The
shooting team. as a whole, had the best result ever in an
Olympic competition.
The clay shooters performed well in the build·up to the
Olympics. In I.S.U. slmet Alex Crikis competed in Fort
Benning prior to leaving for San Antonio for the I.S.U.
Skeet Championships_ The event at Benning was the interservices competition, Alex finished 5th overall and 2nd in
the visitors section. In San Antonio. Ian Hale and Alex
Cruds came 2nd in the two man team event and second in
the three man team event. They were joined by John
Woolley of New Zealand in that event. Individually Alex
and Ian were placed equal fifth.
Jim Ellis and Terry Rumbel also competed in the interservices match in Fort Benning. Terry came 2nd overall
and first in the visitors section, Jim was 4th and 2nd in the
visitors.
The team moved into the Olympic Village in Los Angeles
on the 22nd of July. The Village was approximately 60
kilometres from the shooting ground. Training at the
Olympic venue was limited but the team trained well in the
time available.
Olympic Trap commenced on the first day of competition. There was afield of 71 shooters. with the competition
shot over three days. 75, 75 ~d 50 targets. At the end of
the first day Jim Ellis and Terry Rumbel were in second
place, they had both' shot well and were working hard.
With the temperature in the 30s, and the long trip to and
from the venue and the great pressure of Olympic competition. the strength of the competitor, both mentally and
physically, is of great importance. Many of the other countries' representatives stayed in the area of the grounds to
avoid the long trip each day.

Second day - JiIn Ellis had maintained his 2nd place and
Terry had slipped to 14;th position. Third and last day of
Trap, the pressure on the leaders was immense and scores
varied greatly. JiIn finished with two targets off the winning score, 192 won Gold and JiIn shot 190, equal fifth with
Carrega of France, the world champion, but was placed 6th
on a count back. Terry shot a great 50 straight on the last
day to a standing ovation from the large crowd. He finish·
ed in 7th place with 189, 3 targets off the winner.
• One of the three layouts at Prado.
Of course, our champion, like all champions, were
disappointed not to have won. This was the goal they had
been striving for for the past four years, but in a field of 71
champions, to shoot just two and three off the best scores
over three days of extreme pressure, is something anyone
would, or should be, proud of. If there had been a teams
match, as in the Commonwealth Games or the World
Championships, our two Trap representatives would have
won it hands down.
" AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - OCTOBER 1984
I
• Ian Hale and TerlJl Rumbel pictured at the range.
Ian Hale had been placed 6th in the pre-Olympics held in
Los Angeles in April, when the Eastern Bloc countries
were present, and had continued to hold that form in a
wider field for the Olympics. He finished with just five off
the winning score of 198, it was the equal fourth score, but
Ian was in 8th position on count back. Alex shot 190, eight
off the winning score, but was unfortunate on the last day,
to be drawn next to Matt Dryke of the U.S.A. who was the
subsequent gold medallist.
Skeet was the last event and attracted about 5,000 spectators who clapped and cheered each tiIne Matt shot. Alex
had to wait before he shot, for the cheering etc. to stop. It is
my view that Alex did a great job to finish with a score of
190 in the circumstances. Ian Hale has iInproved his world
ranlting from 14th in 1983 to 8th in 1984. A great effort.
Patti Dench, the free pistol shooter, won Australia's first
medal, the first shooting medal since 1900. She is a
dedicated and courageous performer, and a good ambassador for the target shooting sports.
Bryan Wilson, the running target shooter, was unlucky
not to have won a medal, and is a great prospect for
Australia in the future.
The clay shooters, however, turned in a great performance with an official 6th, 7th and 8th position. The
Eastern Bloc countries would not have made much dif·
ference to the clay target competition, as they certainly
would have, to some of the other shooting sports. Our trap
and skeet shooters are also quite young, by world standards, so we can look forward to even better results.
Our representatives appreciated the assistance given
them by the clay target fraternity, but for our shooters to
perform at Olympic level they sacrifice much, and without
exception, it is my experience that when our shooters perform internationally, they perform for their country, not
for themselves. To hear the Australian anthem played, to
represent this great and wonderful nation and its people
and their sport, is their prime motivation. Our four
representatives did their country and us, the clay shooters
of Australia, proud.

OUR HISTORY IN WORDS AND PICTURES
by George Biggs
The outbreak of World War II in September 1939,
brought to a halt the growth of clay target shooting in
Australia. However, four or five clubs did hang on and
managed to shoot at intervals throughout most part of the
war whenever it became possible to obtain targets or
shells, which was not often.
The Blackburn Gun Club formed in 1936 and based on
the private property of Jaok Bryant, in Holland Road,
BlaCkburn, was one of the clubs able to operate during the
War.

forerunner to
During the early months of the War, units of the United
States Air Force were often entertained for shooting prac·
tj.ce, (clay target practice was a part of Air Gunner training
in those days). The theory was that shooting at targets
familiarised the gunner with the technique of shooting
moving targets. Can you imagine it, in today's age of
computers?

A.C. T.A. President presents a youthfUl George Biggs with trophy on

President Mr Pettit is in the background.
The greatest problem facing the few clubs trying to keep
going during the War was non availability of targets and
ammunition. However, two old timers in Jack Bryant and
Horrie Donnelly, became clay target manufacturers,
operating out of a garage in Blackburn. Unfortunately
quality control was not always up to scratch. But no one
complained about such a minor detail as some targets that
only dusted when shot at!
Blackburn Club continued to shoot until the property
was sold in 1947. It was then necessary to look for a new
site. Vic Fankhauser, a very keen member of the
Blaokburn Club, who owned an orchard property in Burwood Road, offered a part of his land to the Club. Nobel and
Blackburn Clubs then merged to form the Australian Clay
Target Club. The first shoot was held in September, 1948.
Dave Watson was President and Aub Johnston, Secretary.
At a later date the name of the club was changed to
Australian Gun Club and was for a number of years the
venue of Australian National Championships, until they
were rotated round other States as the sport developed on a
-wider National scale.
- Two other Clubs to survive the War years to become
forerunners to Clubs operating today were Camberwell
Gun Club and Coburg Gu~ Club. Eventually suburban expansion caused both clubs to seek other sites. Coburg went
out to Epping to become M.~tropolitan Clay Target Club,
while Camberwell joined with Croydon at Lilydale to
become Lilydale Clay Target Club and finally at a later date
'the name was changed to Melbourne Gun Club.
Bill Delaney Senior, established the Camberwell Gun
Club during the latter War years on land joining a creek on
Bulleen Road, North Balwyn. It was a one trap ground as
was Coburg simply because there was no room for more.
The shot fall out was over a creek in both cases.

responsible for the introduction of American style skeet shooting in
Australia in about 1948.
The original Melbourne Gun Club was based' at Tottenham, a western suburb of Melbourne - it was the headquarters of live bird shooting in Victoria. In 1957 live bird
shooting was banned in Victoria.
Although our early days of clay target shooting were cen'

that other parts of Australia followed on. Queensland was

NINTH ANNUAL SHOOT
2 7 August, 1984
M
R. E. Fox
The weather, as usual for the time of year in the Top
End, was perfect for this year's annual shoot which has to
have been one of the best ever. A combination of mild
temperatures, no wind and top class shooters made for
stiff competition with many possibles and long breaks being shot.
Shooters came from all States and 111 competed over a
tightly structured weekend. Organised pre and post-shoot
duck shooting and barramundi fishing trips undoubtedly
added to the attraction of the shoot. The local duck and
magpie geese season fortuitously opened the day before
the shoot began. From the various. tall stories floating
around the club bar, it would appear that some shooters
had better luck in the field than on the traps.
The other major attraction was the club's new trenoh
layout. This was the first time that trench shooting had
been listed on a Darwin Gun Club Annual Shoot program.
Darwin has the only trench layout in the Northern Territory and it is rapidly becoming an attraction for other
N.T. shooters as well as interstate competitors. Locals are
very aware of the long distances involved in getting to Darwin and all members appreciated the effort made by those
who attended.
The Thursday night 50 target district Championship,
while not officially part of the main shoot, was well attended by visitors. Cliff Reid and Andrew Kinnear shot well
• Brett Dunstan of Kerang went one better, cleaning up all the Junior
Trophies.

taking first and second with Darwin Club President, Ken'
Selwood, coming third. The success of this evening was
due, in no small measure, to the sponsorship of Winchester
and the presence of their ever immaculate representative,
Dick Ayres. As always, the major role played by Win· '
chester in our annual shoots was much appreciated.
With the incentive of over $8000 worth of trophies, in· '
terstate shooters did well but the locals did manage to hold
their own. Andrew Kinnear of Warrnambool shot a
remarkable break of 236/236 for the 50 target DB 15m
Caloutta but he was closely pursued by two locals, Greg,'
Chan and John Doyle, who both dropped out at 235/236. All '
three scores were club records as well as personal bests.
That event was characterised by the longest shoot off of
the weekend with 15 possibles being shot in the primary ,
event.
Four shooters sure to return next year are those lucky;'
enough to have won the four airfare trophies, courtesy of.;
"Our TAA". The last day of shooting also saw keen com· ii
petition to snare a spot in the N.T. State Skeet team.
;;
Nan Meredith of Inverloch, dominated by winning every ,51
ladies' prize except event 5, the 30 target SB, which wasil
won by local shooter, Vlasta Weis., Brett Dunstan of;;i
Kerang cleaned up all the junior shooter's prizes. Brett, of;';
course, is an exceptional junior, being already in A Grade Ei
and obviously a chip off the old block, John Dunstan.
1:
The shoot attracted the interest of the Darwin media'¥]
which was no mean feat considering that the weekend wast
one of, the biggest in the local sports calendar. The Nor':i!
them Territory News featured the results, Radio Top FM~
gave pre-shoot publicity and Channel 8 TV telecast an ex.'
cellent news feature. '

the forward thinking of the N.T. Government with the
tremendous support given to sporting bodies. Visitors
were also appreciative of the typical Territory hospitality
displayed throughout the week and it would be churlish in·
deed to detail all the hangovers thereby induced! All we can
say here is, "Thank you and come again soon".
The shoot could not have succeeded without the sterling
efforts of Hazel Smith and Phil Grove in the office, Greg
Chan's organisational savvy and of course the delightful
ladies who fed and watered the horde particularly Di
Selwood, Beryl Bell and many others. Darryl Read and Bob
Pearce quietly kept the traps working so that there were
very few breakdowns and shoot marshal, Col Smith ensured the efficient progress of shooting. Actually, many
club members, as usual, contributed to make it a very suc·
cessful weekend. See you all next year!

"VICTORIAN ISU
NEWS"
The V.C.T.A. has decided to reactivate the State LS.U.
TraiI).ing Squads for both Trench and Skeet.
It is proposed that the team will be selected on a "first
past the post" basis from two 200 target eliminations to be
held as follows:
1. Frankston/Australian Gun Club - 13th & 14th Oc·
tober, 1984.
2. Victorian LS.U. Carnival at Frankston/Australian
Gun Club - 1st and 2nd December, 1984.
The squads will be composed as follows:
Trench - 4 senior shooters,
Trench - 2 junior shooters,
Skeet - 3 senior shooters,
Skeet - 1 junior shooter.
NOTE: A junior shooter is defined as one 21 years and
under during the beginning of the terms of the squad,
namely January, 1985.
In the event that a junior shooter qualifies ahead of
senior shooters for a place in either squad then the next
two junior shooters (dr 1 in the case of Skeet) will fill the
junior places in the respective training squads.
It is the intention of the State I.S.U. Sub·Committee to
maintain continuity within the training squads and should
a shooter be considered to have improved (and have maintained the correct attitude) and yet not placed within the
top recommended squad numbers in subsequent years,
then that shooter will not be dropped from the squad.
Many shooters who did not qualify in subsequent past
training squads were dropped and with them went a
wealth of information, experience and lmowledge. These
shooters have often dropped out of shooting competition
and this has led to waning numbers at Victorian I.S.U.
Competitions. It has been decided that this mistake will
not be repeated by the Victoria I.S.U. Sub-Committee.
It is envisaged that there will be a constant review of the
following:
(i) shooter's attitude,
(ti) shooter's percentage performances
(iii) attendance record at team training activities.
Benefits of being a team member should include the
following:
(a) specialised coaching seminars e.g. in sports
medicine.
(b) every endeavour will be made to provide specialised
coaching including overseas experts/coaches.
"
(c) every endeavour will be made to provide financial:)
assistance to allow team members to travel interstate:j
for intensive competition and match hardening.
"
The sub·committee will be seeking financial assistance 'j
and funding from sponsors and shooters and it has been,,~
decided that sponsors may nominate that their contribu· .'~
tions be ear·marked either to support all team members 01'/]
specifically for the juniors in the team.
~
The Committee's long term aim is to develop a State~
group of mature, competition hardened and orientated,
I.S.U. discipline shooters equipped with the ability to,
qualify for the National Training Squad and eventually'
qualify for overseas/international competition.
"
Victoria LS.U. Shooters and supporters please help to'
make our new training squads viable and successful.
'
'Any ideas from interested shooters would be most:
welcome and should be addressed to the writer Ct·
Melbourne Gun Club.

NEW SOUTH WALES
STATE SKEET
CARNIVAL
The weekend of the 10th, 11th and 12th August saw the
Taree/Wingham Gun Club "ready to go", for the State
Skeet Carnival. Live-in SeGretary/Groundsman, Gordon
Hogno and his wife, along with the hard working committee of the Club, had everything in Al condition, and
everyone commented on the picturesque gardens and
surrounds.
and 1st in "A", Col Burt collected 2nd in "A" with 58/59,
Max Weston and Adrian Cousens staged a strong tussel
for positions in "AA", Max's score of 93/94 giving him 1st
and Adrian 2nd with 92/94. Doug Jackes took home the
trophy for 1st in "B" grade from that wellimown dedicated
trap shooter - Barry Kable.
James Dunne and Bob Nicholson filled the placings in
"C" grade and Nick and Maree the junior and ladies
positions.
The earlier start of 8.00 am on Sunday allowed the State
Team to shoot their 50 targets, be presented with their
badges and have team photos talcen before the events
commenced.
The State Team for 1984 (in qualifying order) is: Col
Burt, John Worley, Roley Palmer, Les Aberley, Geoff
Walters, Bob Wilson, Bruce Noll, Rex Gosling, Bob Campbell, Rob Parker, Bill Clark, Chris Naudin, Bruce Wenban,
Grahame Wyatt and Paul Thompson. After the team had
shot their required 50 targets the N.S.W. Shoulder to
Shoulder Team to compete at the Skeet Nationals in
November is: Paul Thompson (50/50), Rex Gosling, Chris
Naudin, Bruce Wenban and Grahame Wyatt (49/S0).
The prestige event of the weekend, the N.S.W. State
Championship was first up on Sunday after the team
shoot, the sky remained clear but the winds continued to
gust. Coffs Harbour shooter, Allan Latch handled the conditions perfectly, and returned the only possible for the
most popular win of the carnival. Allan moved from "B"
grade to "AA" on Friday and certainly proved he could handle his new grade.
• The N.S. W. State Skeet Team, 1984.
With practice available on Friday morning, shooters
started to arrive ear.ly, to have a few rounds - Adrian
Cousens, Barney Rooke and Len Norman hardly had time
to unpaGlc their ports from their overseas trip before coming to Taree, Mex Weston arrived from Darwin, with
someone malcing the comment that "he's not really
homesick'-;Geoff Salmon:came along'With Aai-lari;and'the'
Queensland contingent kept their flag flying also.
With the decision made a few years ago not to include the
Friday event in the overall High Gun, so as not to detract
those who haawdrk commitments on the Friday, 50
shooters were on' hand to receive a welcome from State
President, Rob Parker and Shoot Marshal, Barney Rooke,
got the first squaa tinderway.
.
.
The N.S.W.lQldNic Challenge was the first Champion·
ship staged. Max Weston and Les Aberley returned the only possibles, after the shoot off, the trophy sponsored by
the Wingham Branch of the State Bank, for Overall and
1st in "AA", went to Max with 57/57, Les took out "A"
grade with 56/57, Maree Rooke collected her last trophy in
the "B" grade ranks with the excellent score of 49/50, "C"
grade was taken out by Ian Bruce with 46/50 and the
junior trophy was awarded to NickJones with a good score
of 37/50 - seeing Niclc only started shooting skeet quite
recently, and the ladies trophy went to Maree.
Saturday morning dawned with a clear sky, but very
gusty winds. The 4th N.S.W.C.T.A. Championship again
only returned 2 possibles. Neil Dimmick (Qld) and Adrian
Cousens (Vic), with the shoot off score of 59/60, Neil was
awarded Overall and 1st in "A", and Adrian took out 1st in
"AA", second in "AA" went to Doug Dundon with 48/50,
second in "A" went to Les Aberley, Grahame Wyatt, with a
score of 51/52 received the trophy for 1st in "B" grade
from Rob Campbell, Ken Hayes returned 47/50 for 1st in
"C" from Ian Bruce on 45/50, Nick Jones and Maree Rooke
took out the junior and ladies trophies respectively.
The Taree Trading Post sponsored the overall trophy for
the Pacific Coast Championship. John Worley was the only
shooter to return the magic 50/50 to receive, the Overall
if:-..! .
• All the winners at the State Skeet Carnival. Back row, L. to R.: Cec
Herbert, Paul Thompson, Barry Kable, Neil Dimmick, Allan Latch, Max
Weston. Front row: Col Burt, Nick Jones, Maree Rooke, John Worley.· .
Les Aberley's score of 49/50 earned him 2nd in "AA",

Wilson, the "B" grade division went to Steve Subonj with
49/50 from Doug Jackes. Bob Nicholson and Ian Bruce
talcing the "C" grade trophies. Nick Jones again collected
the juniors, and the ladies division went to Mary'Lou
Parker with 45/S0.
Local shooters, Allan Carlyle and Gordon Hogno sponsored the Overall trophy for the Tasman Championship.
You will now see Barry Kable around the traps shooting a
"50 Brealc" badge. Barry won Overall and 1st in "B" grade
with 51/51, from Max Weston on 50/51 to receive 1st in
"AA", Geoff Salmon Gollected 2nd in "AA" with 85/87.

gun club and operates out of the office constructed from
the timber ex the old skeet building. "His" office, under
the line of sugar gums growing along the passageway
behind the now well appointed trap layouts, and members
wishing to nominate, form a queue waiting their turn to
pay up. The "office" is only big enough for Cecil, his table
and a peg to hang his hat, and one shooter at a time.
The architect must have been a genius, because who ever'
he was, he installed two doors on the diminutive structure, .
one for coming and one for leaving. This method didn't
interrupt your place in the queue, and I should know, as at.
the time this scribe was one of the wide eyed budding new
chums learning the ropes of this "fascinating"
gentleman's sporting persuasion.
.
As we enter the mid 1970s this original "office" is
burned down under "mysterious" circumstances and the
committee install a much larger wooden structure, from
the mess hall and dormitory of the airport canteen, and
resite it in place of the first. In time, this too is gutted by
fire and the "mystery" continues and the helping hand of
fate lends another blow.
END OF AN ERA: ROYAL
AERO:
DATELINE 31st August, 1984: The news comes to hand
that receivers have been appointed at the Royal Aero
Flying Club of N.S.W. This appointment has resulted in
one of its sporting annexes, The Royal Aero Gun Society,
being closed. For shotgunners, thi" is a sad blow that ends
the life of the gun club on the Marion Street location. at
Bankstown Airport.
As fate may play her fickle hand along the bumpy road of
lifes fortunes, it's coincidental, that the last shoot
conducted on this historic gun club grounds, was the
Commonwealth Titles of August 19th, 1984.
The club first commenced as a shooting ground about
eight or nine years after the end of World War Two. The
hard times of a World at War are now fading into the
history books, and by 1953 a gathering of smooth bore
devotees, which include Luke Hughes, layout hessian to
form shooting tracks, install a protective wall for the
trapper and a gun club is born. The location is set in a
boundary of scrub and provincial isolation with wildlife
which include rabbits, hares and scrubber roo's on the
outskirts of a young Sydney town, still not hindered by the
great urban sprawl.
From this humble beginning the club progressed and an
American, working at the De Havilland aircraft factory on
the east side of the airport, a Mr George Boehm, was one of
the instrumental shooters behind the move to install the
skeet layout on the grounds.
The first club building on the ground, was in fact the
dismantled original skeet towers from the first skeet
layout in Australia of (1931) from the Liverpool district
(see my looking back testimonial - page 29 - C.T.S.N.
March, 1984). This timber structurewlis transported to
the Royal Aero ground by Mr Fred Hudson's tr\.Jcks and a .
working team of the faithful. A Howard James SII)ith, who
owned a barber shop, which also sold fishing tadkIe and a
small selection of hard to get shooting gear, and who was
included in the pre-selection team of shotgunners·for the
1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne, also lends a hand,
to all and sundry, he is known as "Mick"
By 1956 the first International shoot is staged at the now
progressing club and as fate would lend one of·her many
Page 20
The club is host for the first N.S.W. Clay Target
Association State Championships in 1977, and this scribe
gets in the shoot off in the State single barrel, along with
about six others, including the late N. J. Thomas, Terry
Rumble who had the bad luck to go out on his first shot.
The event being won by the old master N.J.T. The club is,
now under the guiding hand at this time of the late Peter'
Heath and Harry "Father" Somers and now has six D.T.L.
traps and a modern brick clubhouse with carpets and
airconditioning. .
It's a show place on the clay target shooting circuit, with
well appointed shoots, well kept lawns attended to by Alby
Stanfield and the committee, and sets a high standard for
attendance records, owing to its members and its close
proximity to the city. The urban sprawl is catching up with
Royal Aero Gun Society, and by the 1980's curfews are
thrust on its shooting.times, as a handful complain of
noise. Another problem to be encountered, is the fact the
gun club is on Commonwealth ground, and as an annex of
the main flying ground and club, its fate is sealed and the
writing is on the wall. In the last few months, the gun club
committee headed by new President Mr John Morgan have
been looking at plans to move to a new location at Hoxton
Park airport.
As the last shot was fired on the 19th August, '84, it's
fitting this grand old club has attained the ripe old age of
31 and gone out on a Commonwealth Title Shoot, which
closes the end of a colourful era in the history of Australian
clay target shooting, which in fact started at the ending of
another era in the shooting sports. Royal Aero started JUBt
as the live bird shooting era came to an end in the 1950B.
As one great bard once said, time and tide wait for no
man ... and history marches on. The club may be down,
but somehow I feel it is not beyond the reliquary powers of
the members to raise the "Phoenix" from the ashes, as we
have Been this club. on countless times, in the past come
o8.ck;from the brink of one problem after another. It is .

be the case, but there will be no easy
Solutlon, lt WIll be a hard and heavy road ... but with a
little help from their friends it is possible, leastwise we
hope so.

BRISBANE GUN CLUB
ANNUAL SHOOT
The Brisbane Gun Club's Annual Shoot held on 11, 12
and 15th August, was rated the best for years - just how
many years is not quite clear as personal estimates vary,
but several anyhow. This is a tribute to the endeavours of
President, Tom. Meadows, his wife Thelma, and Club Captain, Chris Abbott.
Considering the difficult wind conditions. which had
some targets diving out of sight. scores were exceptionally
good, with long shoot-offs being the order of the day. Event
winners were Greg Stevens, Doug Smith and son David,
Don Connolly in the handicap, John Porter single barrel,
and in the Calcutta event David Howe, after a tense shootoff with Karl Walker. David's win was regarded as
especially deserving seeing that he appeared to be the
leading contributor to the Calcutta pool. Rumour has it
that he got his money back. He also followed up by taking
out the 'high gun' trophy for the weekend.
The ladies' 'high run' title went to Edwina Hall; Paul
Rehbein took the junior title and Stan Meaney the
veterans' - by no means his first. As individual scores are
posted elsewhere in this journal, we won't dwell on them
here.
• President Tom Meadows congratulates Doug Smith on winning the
Exhibition Championship.
Perfect weather, marred only by a sneaky following
wind, brought 90 shooters out of wherever they hibernate
in winter on each day of the weekend and a further 50 on
the Wednesday which, by a stroke of master-planning,
turned out to be a public holiday. They came from as far
afield as South Australia, Victoria and the Northern
Territory.
Renovations to the interior of the Club-house and upgradingof the surrounds - finished just in time with a lot
of help from members - added to the tone of the occasion,
not to mention the competitors' comfort.
A large and happy crowd of shooters, their friends and
families, stayed over on Saturday night for the drawing of
the Calcutta and the advertised "hangi". Well, something
always has to go wrong, even at the best regulated function, and in the still wet ground, the pig refused to cook. So
it was ····cmc"ken ana 'Clllnese"'insteaa, to the accompaniment of the Whisky River Band duo, Don Wells and Bob
Donovan.
• Don Connolly was the winner of the Stevens and Sons Firearms
Trophy.
.
• Tom Meadows presents Edwina Hall with the Ladies High Gun
Trophy.
• John. Porter collects his trophy from president Tom Meadows.
Page 22
Another pleasing feature of the shoot was the generous
sponsorship, in the form of trophies, from firms such as
Winchester Australia Pty Ltd, Stevens and Sons Firearms,
Alfred Dunhill Ltd, Meadows Transport, International
Harvester, and from Campbell Brodribb a long time and
honorary life member of the Club, who always puts up the
ladies' high gun trophy. Club trophies were, as usual, expertly selected by Mary Evans.
As well, the untiring efforts of the ladies - mostly club
members - who manned the servery and provided a menu
that was unanimously" appreciated, received the thanks
which were well due to them. We all know that we can't
shoot on bread and jam, don't we?
Col Wheatley.
