Adam, the primal man, takes his name from Adamah, meaning earth, a primal substance. Out of the Adamah the most striking product is the tree. It gives shade and bears fruit; in other words, it changes the climate and contributes its distinctive gift. At our best, we do the same: we change the moral atmosphere of the earth and deliver to it of our gifts. Caring for something today and ensuring for its vitality for tomorrow is a Jewish value. That is what Mi Dor L’Dor means; from this generation to the next we care for our needs while providing for the next generation’s needs too. In this time of global environmental threats such as global warming, the solid-waste crisis, and the pollution of our water and foods by toxic chemicals, Tu B’Shevat reminds us how fragile and complex our ecosystem really is. The Torah teaches us that, in the midst of besieging a city during war, an army is forbidden to destroy its trees. The rabbis took this idea and expanded it formulating a concept called “Bal Tashcheet.” Protecting the natural world becomes both a legal and ethical imperative. If an enemy’s trees were to be preserved in time of war, how much more so the earth, the water and the air in time of peace! The Talmud tell a story of Honi, a man who is busy planting a carob tree. His neighbor sees him planting the tree and asks of Honi “How long until that tree will bear fruit?” Honi replied, “About 70 years.” His neighbor asked, “Will you be around 70 years from now to enjoy its fruit?” Honi replied, “I was born into a world with ready pleasures and carob trees. I will plant for my children just as my ancestors planted for me.” The story of Honi, the planter, reminds us of our communal responsibility to look after today and provide for tomorrow. The holiday of Tu B’Shevat, Jewish Arbor Day, is a day dedicated to planting trees and appreciating our rich environment and the plentitude of fruits, flora and foliage that are gifts from God. As we embark on a new calendar year 2016 and make our resolutions for the next 365 days to come, we must include an increased level of awareness about our environment and the challenges it faces. Let’s find ways to plant trees, CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM Con't. on page 5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Did you enjoy the wonderful activities in December? Our Synagogue is so alive during the winter season! Be sure to participate in our upcoming events and bring friends. If you need a ride, let us know. A shul is more than Services (although they are primary) but also includes friendships, relaxation, joy and sharing. Arline and I have been working to provide a variety of activities so that our members can experience our happy social side. In January we are planning Pizza & a Movie, a special concert on January 31st with the Holocaust Survivor Band, we are also thinking of a trip. We’ll keep you posted as details are firmed up. Of course, if you have ideas, please share them with us. On the personal side, as we enter the fourth month on the Jewish calendar, I have been reviewing the progress made in following the special promise which I made during the High Holy Days. Have I been more patient and less critical with those who do not meet my expectations or wishes? Besides, my expectations and wishes words perfect. If I seem unreasonable, be sure to remind me of my promise. Oops! I might regret saying that. But, sometimes a little prodding will help. I hope that your year so far has been healthy and enjoyable. For Laughs: Yeshiva University decided to have a row crew team. Unfortunately, they lost race after race. They practiced for hours every day, but never managed to come in any better than dead last. The Rosh Yeshiva finally decided to send Yankel to spy on the Harvard team. So Yankel schlepped off to Cambridge and hid in the bushes off the Charles River, from where he carefully watched the Harvard team as they practiced. Yankel finally returned to Yeshiva. "I have figured out their secret" - he announced - "They have eight guys rowing and only one guy shouting! MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR 2015-2016 We thank the members who already paid your dues for 2015-2016.
