RABBI’S MESSAGE
Shavu’ot, the Festival of
Weeks, is the second of the
Shalosh Regalim, three major
festivals with both historical
and agricultural significance
(the other two are Pesach and
Sukkot). Agriculturally, it
commemorates the time when
the first fruits were harvested
and brought to the Temple, and
is known as Yom ha-Bikkurim
(the Day of the First Fruits).
Historically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount
Sinai, and is also known as Z’man Matan Torateinu -the
Time of the Giving of Our Torah.
The period from Pesach to Shavu’ot is a time of great
anticipation. From the second day of Pesach, we count
each of the days to the day before Shavu’ot, 49 days or 7
full weeks, hence the name of the festival. The counting
reminds us of the important connection between Pesach
and Shavu’ot: Pesach freed us physically from bondage,
but the giving of the Torah on Shavu’ot redeemed us
spiritually from our bondage to idolatry and immorality.
Shavu’ot is also known as Pentecost, because it falls
on the 50th day; however, Shavu’ot has no particular
similarity to the Christian holiday of Pentecost, which
occurs 50 days after their spring holiday.
Shavu’ot originally was not tied to a particular
calendar date, but to a counting from Pesach. Because
the length of the months used to be variable, determined
by observation, and there are two new moons between
Pesach and Shavu’ot, Shavu’ot could occur on the 5th or
6th of Sivan. However, for the last 1600 years we have
had a fixed calendar, and the months between Pesach
and Shavu’ot do not change length on the mathematical
calendar, Shavu’ot is always on the 6th of Sivan (the 6th
and 7th outside of Israel.)
It is customary to stay up the first night of Shavu’ot
and study Torah. This is known as Tikun l’eil Shavuot.
It is customary to eat a dairy meal at least once during
Shavu’ot. There are varying opinions as to why this is
done. Some say it is a reminder of the promise regarding
the land of Israel, a land flowing with “milk and honey.”
According to another view, it is because our ancestors
had just received the Torah, and the dietary laws therein,
and did not have both meat and dairy dishes available.
The Book of Ruth is read at this time. The most likely
explanation why is the story’s connection with the wheat

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Congregants,
“May, May, the lovely month
of May…” It is hard to believe
that we are almost at the halfway mark of 2015! It has been
a busy time, with high and low
points.
Sadly, we have lost dear
members and friends through
illness, death or moving away.
We have instituted a Debt
Reduction Fund in an attempt
to shore up our precarious financial situation. Thankfully,
many of our members have generously contributed, and
we are about half-way to our goal.
We have begun a monthly Classic Movie Festival.
Wonderful musical production such as Singin’ in the
Rain and My Fair Lady had our audiences leaving the
synagogue with a spring in their steps and songs on their
lips. Though we do not charge admission, our attendees
have shown their appreciation by graciously leaving
donations, for which we gratefully thank them. Upcoming
plans include Fiddler on the Roof, Showboat and On the
Town.
What a wonderful Purim spiel we had! Rabbi
Rosenblum and his helpers lead a rollicking Megillah
reading, which was followed by a musical presentation by
the Rabbi and Anne Richman. Muriel and I (a.k.a. Segal
& Shapiro Productions) then introduced the wonderful
cast of “A Dizzy Disney Purim” including pianist Estelle
Grossman, Albert J. Brunn, Irwin Rhine, Anne Richman
and Alvin Kaplan. Never has been seen a Vashti like OUR
Vashti (Irwin) nor heard such a whiney King Ahashveros
(Albert)!
How wonderful it is that, even when we cannot share
a Passover Seder with our biological families, we can
attend a warm and delicious one with our shul family.
As always, the Seder was ably led by Rabbi Rosenblum.
Pesach was followed by a deeply moving and inspiring
Yom HaShoah program. We thank and salute all our
brave survivors for attending and participating. I am in
awe of you!
On to the future! You will be receiving one more
bulletin before the High Holy Days. Please purchase
your tickets and reserve your seats as soon as possible,
especially if you want the same ones that you had last
year. Also, please send in your memorials for the Book
of Remembrance at your earliest convenience. Through

harvest. However, some Midrashim point to Ruth’s status
as the great-grandmother of King David, whose Yahrzeit
is said to fall on Shavuot.
Today, some communities place flowers and greens
around the sanctuary, the emphasis of the Shavuot
celebration is the anniversary of Matan Torah (the Giving
of the Torah).
Just for the record, I don’t believe we eat blintzes
because meat took too long to prepare - blintzes take
a long time to get ready, at least if made properly. But
they’re worth the wait. And, of course, so was the Torah.
Whatever explanations you choose, and whatever
customs you celebrate, I wish you and yours a Chag
Sameach.

your memorial, your loved ones live on. Prices for your
seats and for your memorials remain the same as last year.
Sadly, we have been forced to institute a small increase
in the membership dues, which will now be $375 p/p.
We know you realize and understand our plight, and we
thank you in advance for your cooperation.
This is the time of year when our snowbirds have flown
away. Combined with the afore-mentioned declining
membership, we are faced with the very real possibility
that we must discontinue our daily minyanim. PLEASE
DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! We need each and every
one of you to commit to attend at least one minyan a week.
Please come in to the shul’s office and sign your pledge.
Please help us in our very real time of need, so that we
can be here for you in YOUR time of need.
I wish the ladies a Happy Mother’s Day, and to all a
joyful and healthy summer.
See you in shul!

WOMAN OF THE YEAR
As Ceil Negrin put it at the award ceremony,
“Shirley a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh,
in addition to being a wife and mother, pursued a
career of her own as a real estate agent.
She brought to our Sisterhood many special
attributes such as our fabulous Chanukah Luncheon.
This past year we celebrated our Fifth Chanukah
Luncheon, each year's luncheon was successfully
better than the previous year. These luncheons are a
great part of the Sisterhood treasury.”

Larry & Claire's
FOOD CORNER
Larry’s Cheese Blintzes
This month Larry are sharing with you a recipe for
Larry’s Cheese Blintzes. A perfect lunch with friends
during the Festival of Shavuot. We like to serve the
blintzes with Greek yogurt or sour cream, sprinkled
with cinnamon mixed with sugar. For a variation
mashed potatoes sautéed with onion can be substituted
for the cheese fill. Enjoy!
Ingredients for Crepe Batter:
3 eggs
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1 cup all purpose sifted flour
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup oil
Method:
In a bowl combine eggs, oil and water, blend well.
Mix flour, cornstarch and salt. Mixture should be thin.
Place a large sheet of aluminum foil on the counter.
Using a 9” Teflon skillet, grease well, pour 2 tablespoons of the batter.
Rotate pan so bottom of pan is evenly covered.
Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly brown.
Remove from pan and place uncooked side down on
aluminum foil.
Repeat the process until using all the mixture.
