SPORTSMANSHIP OF THE YEAR
TM
SPOKANE HOOPFEST
SPORTSMANSHIP OF THE YEAR
AWARD NOMINEES
DAKOTA JOHNSON
A Shadle Park High School senior, and three sport letterman, Dakota is being recognized
for his exceptional sportsmanship at a wrestling match between Shadle Park and North
Central. Dakota, a varsity team wrestler, was asked before the match if he would be willing
to wrestle a North Central JV team special needs wrestler. The North Central athlete though
easily overmatched by Dakota wrestled a very tough match and ended up pinning Dakota
for his first win. The smile of victory from the NC wrestler and the smile from Dakota as his
opponent’s hand was raised in victory told the story of true sportsmanship.
GONZAGA PREP BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL PROGRAM
The Gonzaga Prep Boys Basketball team ended the 2010-2011 season on a high note as
Washington State 4A champions, but the true sign of a successful team and its program is
their consistent show of sportsmanship. The G-Prep boys’ basketball program demonstrates
respect and class from each player, never losing perspective on respecting their opponents,
officials and the game. The players not only show enjoyment in the game, but opponents
and officials get genuinely “thanked” after a game regardless of the outcome.
