I couldn’t believe what I just heard. I turned to my dear friend, Welby Smith, and asked, “Did he just say what I think he said?” Welby confirmed and all of a sudden folks were patting me on the back exclaiming, “Hey Russ. The President just gave you a shout out. What do you think of that?” I know that the only real shout out I ever need is from Jesus. He is my audience. He is the One I need to please. If everyone in the world says I’m successful but Jesus doesn’t think so, then I have failed. However, it’s alright if the entire world thinks I’m a loser as long as Jesus is proud of me, then that’s all I need to know. Many times we don’t realize that God answers every prayer by saying “Yes,” “No” or “Wait.” I don’t like “No” and I really don’t like to “Wait.” I want it all, and I want it all right now. However we are told to “ask and keep on asking.” “Seek and keep on seeking” and “Knock and keep on knocking.” God’s Word encourages us to never give up; to keep on praying and trusting. The Lord may eventually say “Yes” to your prayers but more often than not it just takes a little time. And throughout my own career I’ve worked with enough families to witness this wonderful achievement, firsthand. But have also found that more commonly, families encounter stumbling blocks along the way that keep these hard earned plans from ever being realized. Therefore, in order to help ensure your success, I’ve listed four simple steps to get you started. 1. Define A Budget — The number one reason families struggle during retirement is failure to define and live within a budget. Establishing a set budget, and learning to live within its parameters, is a mandatory part of attaining specific goals. Keep in mind that it should be measured periodically and adjusted as goals and expenses change. the very near future. The rising cost of medical care as well as The Affordable Healthcare Act (Obama Care), are rapidly changing the healthcare environment. So it is extremely important to be diligent, and to fully understand your group benefits, Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance alternatives. Families are often devastated by the cost of catastrophic healthcare. Be wise, choosing the proper coverage now will protect you and your estate as you age. 4. Prepare For Emotional Changes — It is imperative to be emotionally prepared for the next phase of life. In my experience, depression, anger and on-going frustration plague retirees who’ve failed to consider the emotional impact associated with transitioning into retirement. If you don’t already have a plan for how you will spend your time during these years, consider it diligently, today, or you will inevitably feel lost like a ship at sea with no rudder. “I realized that it’s good and proper for a man to eat and drink. It’s good for him to be satisfied with his hard planning for retirement, a primary factor to consider work on this earth. That’s what he should do during the is analyzing governmental and company benefits to few days of life God has given him. That’s what God made project retirement income. This can be an overwhelm- him for.” (Eccl 5:18 NIRV) In this verse, Solomon has wisely concluded that God ing experience as the choices are often irrevocable, so has made each of us with purpose. Before retirement that research them well by first speaking to individuals purpose is clearly to provide for our families. But as we who can help you determine which choices are best enter into retirement that significant role must be redefined for you. One example is whether to receive Social — something that most of us fail to consider in advance. Security benefit at age 62 or wait until the age 70. As a part of your retirement planning, keep in mind that 3. Plan For Medical Cost — If you haven’t faced a health these special years are not a destination, but instead a concrisis, statistics show a high probability that you will in tinuing journey where the wisdom you’ve gained is desperately needed by others. Whether it’s mentoring in a church community, helping a charity, building up your family tree or assisting a branch of government, pouring your experience into the lives of others is incredibly rewarding. More importantly, establishing a well-defined role for your gifts and talents to play after your career, will keep you moving forward to the ultimate goal of standing before God and hearing “Well done good and faithful servant.” So finish the race well by planning to be a good steward of these for the entire season of life! The very first event will be held Saturday, June 1, at the Verdilla Picnic Grove located at 1168 Red Hill Road, Port Trevorton, Pennsylvania, at 6PM. The Rev. David Schultz from Witmer’s United Methodist Church has agreed to bring a short message and a local Hondorus Missions Team will be selling food to raise money for an upcoming mission trip. The venue was the brain child of True Heart baritone, Joe Kantz. “We kept hearing about ‘Cowboy Church’ when ® we were at the 2013 Inspirational Country Music Week in Nashville but we knew there were very few of them in Pennsylvania,” said Kantz. “It made sense for us to expand our ministry in this way,” added lead singer Scott Bordner. Kantz continued, “We hope to have these events at least once every three months. True Heart was able to create a demand for Southern Gospel music in Central Pennsylvania over 20 years ago and they hope to do the same with Inspirational Country Music since they switched to this genre of music in 2013. “We love Inspirational Country Music,” said Bordner. “We really believe this is where God wants us to be.” True Heart Cowboy Church is mostly about Country Music with a message. Everyone is welcome to attend. A love offering will be received. True Heart has been in Studio finishing their first Nashville CD, which will be available soon. The CD Down This Road will feature 10 new songs for the group. All the songs are Inspirational Country music and range from slow, emotional songs to upbeat and Mainstream Country sounds, all featuring Christian and positive lyrics. True Heart’s first national single “The Broken Ones” has been picking up steam and has 80 station ‘adds.’ ”Our listeners love it,” said Hunter Logan owner of HLE Radio Station, an internet-based station from Jennings, Louisiana, that is one of many stations playing the song. I have always enjoyed making calls to Music Row. Some people I am able to connect with and gain a lasting friendship. What a blessing! How did you get involved in radio? I was in 10th grade and won an internship at a local radio station. I was able to do the weather and was hooked! I then got a part-time gig at another local station doing weekends. I was the coolest/uncool kid in school. I was cool because I was on the radio. I was uncool because we played Classic Country. When I graduated in 1988, they offered me full-time and I have done this ever since. How do you like being a Music Row reporting station? I like it! It’s important that the industry and WFRY have a relationship. We can then bring Nashville to our listeners What would be one trait (characteristic) you think someone needs to have for radio? A good personality. How are new artists considered for play? (How are the listeners subjected to new artist on the rise?) If it’s a good song — it’s a good song! Garth, Tim, Reba and George were all new artists once upon a time. How are playlists determined? By song, it’s all about the music. Do you like/dislike artist visits? Like them. It’s important to meet the artists and get a rapport. Are radio tours worth the time and money to advance an artist career? This is a pet peeve of mine. YES, radio tours are important when you introduce the artist on the radio and introduce their tune to the radio audience. NO, when radio stations do conference room concerts. Might as well Skype that. 28 June 2014 Until the next call, Sarah Reed 615-248-8105 Ext: 239 [email protected] News Jase Crabb Series’ Book 4 Is Complete! ® Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, actor, author, husband and father, Jason Crabb, has announced his fourth book Four Letters Spell Love: H-E-L-P in ® his Jase Crabb Book Series of children’s books. It was a surprise to her and she was very pleased with the finished product. Thank goodness!” Parenting is obviously a huge topic covered in Man Stuff. Considering the dynamic of today’s excessive pop culture, what concerns Josh and Jennifer as parents as they maneuver through the many different obstacles, distractions and influences of life in 2014? “Our biggest concern is that we don't want out children learning about important life issues from someone or something else other than us. It’s our responsibility to raise them and train them, as they should go. So I never want them to grow up and say, "My parents never talked to me about (insert topic.)" It’s unlikely that the Turner children will suffer from lack of communication and parenting-froma-distance. Even with a casual glance through Man Stuff, it becomes obvious that the responsibility and honor of parenting is of the highest priority for Josh and Jennifer. The connection, concern and investment in their family unit is inescapable. In fact, it was from this grand sense of family that the title of the book emerged. “My second son, Colby, and I were about to take a trip to our cabin in South Carolina and my wife Jennifer asked Colby what he and I were gonna do and he replied, ‘We're goin' to do Man Stuff!’ When it came time to give the book a title, that statement kept rolling around in my head. I felt like it was an appropriate title for the contents in the book and the fact that the publisher wanted it geared towards men.” If engaging the male audience was the publisher’s goal for the book, they could not have arranged a more appropriate celebrity guest to write the book’s Foreward. Duck Dynasty’s very own Jase Robertson pays a fitting tribute to Turner, his family and the project as a whole. Robertson writes in the Foreward, "I think this world needs men that are proud to be men and should assume spiritual roles in our society and homes. My dad once told me that an endangered species on our planet was men who are the spiritual leaders of their family and are not PowerSourceMusic.com PowerSource ashamed to declare Jesus as Lord. Josh and I have a common goal to go to Heaven. And we understand that our top priority is to get our family there as well." The Turner/Robertson pairing couldn’t be a better fit. And it was actually a Christmas carol that sealed the deal. “I was approached about singing a song for the Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas album. It turns out that I sang an original song called “Why I Love Christmas” with Jase's wife Missy. I had gotten to know Jase some before that happened, but I’d always been a fan of his and felt like he would have a great objective point of view to write the Foreword for the book. He did a great job, and I’m honored to have him as a part of this book.” Man Stuff hits the market as this feature goes to press. Between Turner’s loyal fanbase, the media clout of a Duck Dynasty megastar and a public eager for wholesome, traditional content … the book’s success seems almost certain. Should Josh Turner fans start getting excited about future book projects? “A sequel is always an option as long as the first is a success. Time will tell on whether or not that happens. I definitely have more stories to tell.” Random Josh Turner Fun Fact: In the Robby Bensondirected Billy Graham biopic, Billy: The Early Years, Josh played the role of George Beverly Shea, the featured soloist on the early Graham crusades. How did that role come about? “Anastasia Brown was the one who I first heard about it from. I was thrilled and terrified … about playing such an iconic figure. I respected him very much and wanted to do a great job. It was a low budget project but it was a lot of fun to be a part of. I like to say that I taught Armie Hammer (who played Billy Graham) everything he knows!” With 2014’s schedule in full swing, what does the rest of the year look like for Josh Turner? “The rest of the year is gonna be spent touring, finishing up my record and putting a single out. I will be promoting my book as well.” Regardless of whatever may be keeping him busy at any given time, one thing is certain — Josh Turner will be doing it with grace, humility and razor sharp focus on what matters most. “My faith has gotten me through so many difficult times in my life and it has shown in my successful and peaceful times, too. So it's a huge part of who I am. Without Jesus, I'm lost and without direction.” PS Josh Turner’s Man Stuff: Thoughts On Faith, Family & Fatherhood is available now online and in-person at all major book retailers. Those were important times in the history of Nashville’s recording industry. Prior to that, Nashville wasn’t taken very seriously as a “recording mecca.” The influence of those early Dylan sessions dramatically changed the way things were done from that point forward. Do you mind reflecting a bit on that era? I played guitar on Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait; and bass on New Morning. The first two were recorded in Nashville and New Morning in New York. I think Dylan coming to Nashville opened a lot of doors. But the point is that Nashville delivered a fresh sound and a fresh approach plus a great, low-pressure work environment. The Pop projects had much larger budgets than the Country projects did and therefore the time spent doing them was not as crucial. You were one of the first to actually organize large-scale concerts for charitable causes. Describe the passion and concern that led up to you taking action: You’re most likely speaking about Volunteer Jam, which actually came about as a live recording session to record two tracks for our Fire On The Mountain album in 1974. It basically became a “happening” the first year. So we just went with the flow. You’ve never been one to shy away from political statements. And that is one of the many, many reasons so many people love and respect you. While most people would identify you as more conservative … some might find it rather interesting that you were an early supporter of Jimmy Carter and even played at his inauguration. Care to elaborate on the evolution of personal political beliefs? Jimmy Carter was, and is, a good man who promised the American June 2014 By: John Gusty people he would never lie to them. And, as far as I know, he never did. The Office of the President was in a shambles after the Watergate debacle and Mr. Carter was a breath of fresh air — open and honest. Although I disagree with a lot of his political beliefs, I still hold him in deep respect and do not regret supporting him. It’s an interesting time for politics right now. With the two main parties behaving in a big-government/liberallike manner and no real representations for the smallgovernment traditionalists among us, where do you see things heading into 2016? Politics this day and age are a conundrum. What is needed is common sense, fiscally and socially. And I don’t think half the population is ready to accept the pain that it’s going to take to get this nation back on track. We have painted ourselves in a corner and the only way out involves a long, messy walk. Any thoughts on what passes for “Country Music” these days? It’s always a passionate topic to-be-sure. But with things like the auto-tune voice effect, dance beats and club sounds … do you think Hank, George, Johnny or Waylon would recognize it today if they were still alive? Musical styles are always in flux, always evolving and always searching. So we have to expect change. Some we may like and some we may not. One thing I learned a long time ago: the record companies are in the record business and I am in the music business. The record companies are concerned with sales, not integrity or preservation of tradition. And that’s where they differ from the artists. I am not in love with most music I hear on the radio these days. Not because of a lack of talent, but because of the cookie-cutter similarity of the records. I feel there are a lot of young artists out there who could bring some meaningful innovations into the music, but that’s when the record company mentality kicks in and stifles individual creativity. It’s hard to argue with them since they’ve been so successful, but a business cannot survive without fresh approaches and innovation. And it’s high time to start looking around. Any current, young Country artists or acts that you feel really embody the original spirit of traditional Country music? I like Justin Moore and Zac Brown. Jamie Johnson is getting it done. You are face-to-face with Our Creator. You get one question: No question, just praise. While still in high school, Gayle performed regionally and sampled life on the road with Lynn, joining her onstage for a couple of songs. Before graduating, Gayle signed her first contract with Decca Records, Lynn’s recording home, and was asked to change her name because one of her musical heroes, Brenda Lee, was a mainstay on the label. Her adopted stage name, “Crystal,” was suggested by Lynn as the two drove by a Krystal hamburger franchise. In 1977, she became a household name when “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” perched atop the Country charts for four weeks and climbed the Pop charts in America and around the world. Gayle enjoyed fifteen additional Billboard No. 1 hits between 1978 and 1987, including “Talking In Your Sleep” and “It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye.” In 1978, her album We Must Believe In Magic was certified platinum, making her Country music’s first female artist to sell one million units. For the last twenty years, Gayle has gained acclaim for compelling specialty recordings, including albums of Gospel and Children’s music, a tribute to Hoagy Carmichael, a collection of Pop standards, and concert recordings — all featuring her effortlessly smooth vocals. The album — which includes the current chart-climbing single, “Hope In Front Of Me” — arrives on June 24. Acclaimed singer, author, and American Idol favorite, Danny Gokey made an indelible first impression with 2010’s record-breaking debut album, My Best Days. Now, after four years of creative development and production, the multi-talented artist/performer is ready to unveil his stunning second album, a moving and deeply personal collection that marks an immense leap forward in craft, performance, and emotional impact. Described by Gokey as “songs of hope and entertainment,” Hope In Front Of Me sees him joining forces with some of today’s most honored songwriters and producers, including award-winning “Producer of the Year” Bernie Herms (Natalie Grant, Casting Crowns, Barbra Streisand, ® Andrea Bocelli), multiple Grammy Award-winner Keith Thomas (Amy Grant, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Heather Headley, Vanessa Williams) and Josh Crosby (Cher, Owl City, Matt Kearny). Resonanting with hard-earned soulfulness and redemptive compassion, the album confirms Danny Gokey as a groundbreaking artist with a rare gift for deep connection with audiences. “I really wanted to just capture more of who I am with this record,” Gokey says, “more of the soul, and more of all of me as an artist. It’s got a big sound to it, which I love. The track, ‘Hope In Front Of Me,’ is just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve got some songs on there that I hope people are going to really love.” Gokey is also active on other fronts including Sophia’s Heart. Named in honor of his late wife, the organization’s goals are to provide hope and help to homeless families, provide scholarships to deserving students and operate a thriving inner-city music and arts program. Opened in late 2011, the 77,000 square foot Sophia’s Heart facility in Nashville has helped rescue over 60 families from life on the street. In support of the new release, Carman hits the road this summer on his Live Across America Presents: No Plan B Tour making stops at venues across the country bringing new music to friends and fans nationwide. “The main message of the whole album can be found in the title track, ‘No Plan B,’ which is how I’ve lived all these years,” said Carman. “Even if I only have a few more days on this earth, I’ll still be preaching, giving altar calls, winning souls for the kingdom and singing the songs that have the power to bring deliverance into people’s lives, whether it is in front of 20 people or 20,000 people. God doesn’t call us to be popular. He calls us to be effective and that’s always been my goal, effective right up to the end. Jesus is ‘Plan A.’ There is ‘No Plan B.’” No Plan B includes 12 tracks penned and performed by Carman, and produced by Carman and his production partners Ted T and Tre' Corely. The CD and tour were made possible through the unprecedented fan response to the crowd-funding platform Kickstarter campaign he launched after opening up on social media about a cancer diagnosis in 2013. The campaign was wildly successful — the second most funded Kickstarter music campaign ever — and set the tone for the momentum behind the release of No Plan B and major national tour, Live Across America Presents: No Plan B Tour. Carman found a renewed vision and purpose for his ministry and Carman buzz was rekindled that inspired the artist to record a new CD and tour again. “I was diagnosed in 2013 and was planning on having 2-3 good years left, but I didn’t want to keep it a secret,” confirmed Carman. “I posted the news on Facebook and wanted to be honest and upright about it with anyone who asked. So many people started sharing stories of what they went through and posted photos of their heads wrapped up because their hair was gone. When I hear a story like that, my instinct is to reach out and cheer them up.” June 2014 Provided By: Chelsey Dickson This collection of songs features the title track “No Plan B” and “God Made Man,” the latest of Carman’s many cheeky character songs featuring a “Sopranos”-styled mob cast, but with an Italian accented narrator who’s wholeheartedly committed to Christ, the gripping patriotic Ballad “The Flag,” which sends a very well-timed reminder that we will always be “one nation under God” and our faith can never be silenced, and an updated version of “Jesus Heal Me” with new production, a true touchstone of the album that’s bound to continue its role as a concert standard. Carman was the only Christian artist able to fill stadiums all over the world, from record holdings like 72,132 people at Texas Stadium, over 50,000 in Johannesburg, South Africa and another 80,000 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A grand total of 4.5 million cumulative fans attended three national tours, including his extensive Heart Of A Champion tour. He's collected the most names of any American citizen, one million signatures, on a petition supporting prayer in public schools and had more than one million people accept Christ’s salvation at his ® events. Add in seven Dove Awards, a quartet of Grammy ® Award nominations, plus 16 RIAA Certified Platinum and Gold albums and videos amassing to well over 10 million cumulative career record sales. Carman is quite literally one of the most flourishing, innovative and influential artists of all time. “I’ve always sought to minister to the best of my ability. I wanted to help win as many souls for the Kingdom as I possibly could,” sums up Carman. “Now I meet people who say ‘my life was so messed up 20 years ago, but I went to your concert, got saved and now I’m a worship pastor.’ Stories like that just go to show you how somebody’s life can completely turn around. I’m like a soldier who serves their country. I just want to serve people, and if just one guy gets it, then it’s all been worth it.” Carman’s Tour tickets are on iTickets.com. John has been able to play at the highest levels of Bluegrass and Gospel music. He played guitar with both Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Alison Krauss & Union Station, fiddle with J.D. Crowe & the New South, banjo and fiddle with The Isaacs, and currently banjo, fiddle and guitar with The Boxcars. “I love Bluegrass music — always have and always will,” expresses Bowman. “I’ve tried to walk away from it a couple of times, but I can’t stay gone for long. But I believe God has somehow used Bluegrass as a way to let me reach people who may not have heard this message before. I want to introduce more of this music to Bluegrass audiences. It’s a little bit different from what I’ve done before, but there are elements of Bluegrass in anything I do. I guess this is Praise & Worship music the way I do things.” Bowman also has a passion for preaching and sharing the message of his faith, and, in 1997, he was confirmed as a minister. He married into The Isaacs, one of the first families of Gospel music, and all of his solo projects have been songs of faith. So it’s no surprise that his newest album, Worship Him, follows the same path. “I’ve been … preaching, and it is usually just me and a guitar,” explains Bowman. “I’ve always wanted to do a record like that, so I decided to recreate on CD what I’ve been doing at these revivals and preaching dates heading … [to and from the Boxcars’ concerts]. The theme is always about worshipping God, so I titled the album Worship Him. There are some new songs that … will be new to Bluegrass listeners. The Boxcars have been kind enough to let me do songs like this on our shows, and the crowds have been very appreciative.” June 2014 39th Anniversary Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival The California Bluegrass Association (CBA) Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival will be held Father’s Day weekend (June 12-15) at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California. The four-day festival begins at 9:45AM on Thursday and runs through late afternoon Sunday (Father’s Day), with a full slate of main-stage concerts, workshops and round-the-clock jamming. The festival’s preview lineup includes: Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Junior Sisk and Ramblers Choice, Lonesome River Band, and many more. A detailed list is on the event’s website. The festival is preceded by a three-day Bluegrass music camp offering music students of all ages, an opportunity to learn from some of the country’s best Bluegrass musicians and teachers. For more information about the music camp, visit www.cbamusiccamp.org. The CBA is a California non-profit corporation, founded in 1975 in San Francisco Bay Area, and dedicated to the continuance of Bluegrass, Old-Time and Gospel Music. Jim VanCleve Exits Mountain Heart Fiddler Jim VanCleve has announced his departure from Mountain Heart, a group he helped found some years ago. Jim, Barry Abernathy and Steve Gulley started the band when they left Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver in 1998. Also, Adam Steffy and Johnny Dowdle were founding members. They started as a contemporary Bluegrass band, but drifted towards progressive Bluegrass and Country sounds. “After nearly 16 years of touring and recording,” explained VanCleve, “I [have] decided … to leave Mountain Heart … These fine gentlemen are much more than co-workers, they are family. While it’s been a very difficult decision to reach, I feel that the timing is right and that God has been tugging me to explore a number of different opportunities that have presented themselves over the last few months, as well as be open to new ones I’m not yet aware of.” PowerSourceMagazine.com PowerSource 06_14_PowerSource 06_14 5/13/14 1:46 PM Page 61 1st Annual GALOT Music Festival The 1st annual GALOT Music Fest, a Bluegrass, Americana and Country music festival, will be held June 6-8 at the GALOT Motorsports Park (formerly Dunn-Benson Dragstrip) in Benson, North Carolina. More Bluegrass At Carnegie Hall Dry Mill Road, with guest fiddler Patrick MacAvinue, performed with the Walker Performing Arts Children’s Theater Troupe at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall earlier this year. Carnegie Hall hosted a production of From Sea To Shining Sea, a children’s musical based on Appalachian history. The production was staged by Walker Performing Arts, a youth theater group from Hagerstown, Maryland, with Teri Walker directing. Music was provided by the Bluegrass band that was visible on stage during the show and MacAvinue, who tours with Audie Blaylock & Redline, reports that “It was truly a wonderful experience. I’ve known Rob and the guys for a couple years, and they are top notch musicians.” Dry Mill Road is Robert Mabe on banjo, Doug Ross on mandolin, Sean Loomis on guitar, and Dave Hurt on bass. Evelyn TRAVELLING COMPANION Top 40 Country Music long ago lost any resemblance to its original roots. The argument has been made that all real, legitimate Country Music had to find another genre just to have a home. Fans of Country Music’s classic roots nowadays find themselves over in the “Americana” genre in search of that legendary twang fiddle and pick. Based in Liverpool, England, The Good Intentions have been making that sweet twang since 2008’s critically acclaimed Poor Boy. The three-piece Americana ensemble mix acoustic instrumentation with three-part harmonies and incorporate 60s Folk and Bluegrass with early Country dynamics. The 12 tracks Travelling Companion are so consistent and authentic that picking a standout isn’t easy. But the track “Paul The Apostle” is worthy of its namesake. The band all feel that being based in Liverpool, the port from where so many Europeans left for America with the traditional music that evolved into Country music, they are reclaiming the roots of that music and celebrating the links between the British Isles and America. In the words of chief songwriter R. Peter Davies: “From Liverpool to Nashville, wherever they may roam. Our hearts are only looking for a place to call a home.” WILBURN & WILBURN | HERE COMES SUNDAY This father/son duo combine a solid foundation of old school Praise & Worship with a flare of youthful presence current enough to bring the message of Christ to the youthful ear. This 12-song offering is equally split into three styles of song: slow-tempo emotional heartstring tuggers, mid-tempo power Ballads and footstompin’ old school Gospel nuggets. It’s the latter of those three styles where Wilburn & Wilburn shine the brightest. Both father Jonathan and his son Jordan have pleasantly smooth vocal chops. But it’s during the more upbeat numbers where the character of their voices comes through. Standout cuts include “Heaven’s Jubilee” and “Funeral Plans” — both of which pack enough old-time revival punch to raise the roof off of any house of worship. Perhaps the most memorable track is the Bluegrass-driven “If These Old Walls Could Talk,” which tells the tale of time inside a church … from the church building’s perspective. SHINE BRIGHT BABY | DREAMERS Taking their name from Philippians 2, Orrville, Ohio’s Shine Bright Baby bring their fresh and inventive amalgamation of Pop, Rock and modern Worship music and wrap it around a dance-floor friendly electronic palette. The 10-track Dreamers is the band’s debut release for BEC Recordings, an imprint of Tooth & Nail Records, formed in 1997 in partnership with the EMI Christian Music Group. The title track delivers uplifting energy and a contagious chorus. Other highlights including the redemptive “Beautiful Love” and one of the band’s personal favorites “Made To Glow.” The latter about letting God’s love shine in everyone’s daily actions. The piano/acoustic Ballad “Love Restores” was written in the wake of a highly publicized school shooting near the band’s hometown. The song proposes how the Lord’s love can renew even the most broken circumstances. The group also shows its more aggressive side on “The Brave Ones,” a guitar-charged anthem centered on living a bold life of faith. STEVE FREE | SHIP OF DREAMS Those not familiar with Steve Free … think Arlo Guthrie meets Don McClean. The winner of numerous Music Industry Awards including 9 ASCAP Award’s, a Platinum Record and a Grammy® Award nomination, Steve has charted over 30 songs on the National and International Americana, Country and Billboard Charts, including 15 No.1 songs. Fans of Folk and Americana will enjoy Steve Free’s latest offering —14 songs of pleasantry. No extremes here. The tone of this entire release is steady and moderate… with the one exception being the bouncy blues of “Find Me A Job.” The standout tracks here, oddly enough, are both odes to the love of an old dog. “Old Blue” and “Ole Link” strike a familiar chord with anyone who’s ever lost an old faithful friend. Anyone glancing at the CDs liner notes can clearly see the love of family pouring from this man. And that love is apparent throughout the entire listen. 62 Editor’s note: These albums have been reviewed by an experienced record label executive and reflect his opinions, not the opinion of Power Source Magazine. But Alden puts enough of her own spin on each of the tracks she’s chosen to pay tribute to make the overall listening experience still feel fresh. Her take on the Peter, Paul & Mary classic “Leaving On A Jet Plane” and Jimmy Buffett’s “Mexico” were pleasant surprises. As was her rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s signature tune “Landslide.” But it was her tackling of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock And Roll” that left the biggest smile on our faces. Of the three originals, “Whirlpool” and “Crayola Skies” (both co-penned by Alden’s ex-husband and producer) serve as proof that Alden can shine just as brightly in her own skin as well as others. The sounds of East Tennessee are alive and well. Healed is a 13-track offering of solid mountain Gospel from the quartet known as Locust Ridge. Appropriately named after the small rural community from which they hail, these 3 brothers and longtime family friend craft some mighty fine heartfelt, spiritfilled Church-house singin’ that has caught the attention and approval of Country Music Legend Dolly Parton. Lead vocalist Russell Allen explains, “As this album began taking shape, we started to see a theme develop. That theme is redemption and healing. I almost see this as first-aid for the soul.” The current single “Silver & Gold” has already generated some significant praise and respect from radio and beyond. Les Butler, Singing News publisher, says “Meticulous in their song search, vocal preparation and musical presentation. That effort has manifested itself in this stellar Bluegrass Gospel release!” SAMMY KERSHAW | BIG HITS: VOLUME ONE Due to the nature of music publishing deals, it’s not uncommon these days for established Country Music stars to go back and rerecord versions of their biggest hits and fan favorites. By rerecording the songs, the artist is afforded a little more freedom to release the music again under some slightly better terms. (Read: without a record label muddying-up the process). Big Hits: Volume One is platinum-selling Country Music star Sammy Kershaw’s turn at that very business model. Some of the expected hits are there. “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful,” “Cadillac Style” and “Queen Of My Doublewide Trailer” are represented. Suspiciously missing however are four of Kershaw’s Top Ten’s: “Anywhere But Here,” “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore,” “National Working Woman’s Holiday” and “Meant To Be” are all absent — Likely the result of the previously mentioned publishing deal scenario. Two new cuts stand out. “The Middle” and “Can’t Put My Finger On It” will ring-true to longtime Kershaw fans. PowerSourceMusic.com Banjo virtuoso Bill Emerson’s latest release is an acoustic blend of Traditional and Contemporary Bluegrass, Classic Country, dynamic instrumentals and rich Gospel music. A founding member of the famed Bluegrass ensemble, The Country Gentlemen, Emerson can also be credited as founder and shaper of Country Current, the world-renowned Bluegrass ensemble of the United States Navy Band. The three very distinct vocals of Chris Stifel, Teri Chism and Wayne Lanham drive this 12-track collection of solid, master class Bluegrass. The title track and lead single has been hailed as “three minutes of Bluegrass perfection” by SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction host, Kyle Cantrell. Hailed as a “Banjo Legend” by The Washington Post, Bill Emerson’s fourth release for Rural Rhythm Records also features two original songs (“Days When You Were Mine” and “This Heart You Have Broken”) by acclaimed Bluegrass songwriting team Pete Goble and Leroy Drumm. When the Legendary Cathedral Quartet retired in December of 1999, Scott Fowler and Roger Bennett decided to continue the rich musical tradition of Southern Gospel Quartet singing. Legacy Five was organized and officially debuted in January 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia. They’ve since firmly established themselves in the Southern Gospel Music world. Audiences have responded overwhelmingly to their four-part harmony and their ability to effectively communicate the message of Christ. Great Day is the group’s most recent release for Daywind Records. The 10 tracks included cover the complete Gospel vocal-group spectrum. From the low-key numbers like “He Heals” to the rapid-fire toe-tappers like the album title track, as well as, “What A Happy Day.” But it’s the jubilant nature of “That’s A Hallelujah” that leaves the most lasting impression. And ironically enough … that sentiment best sums up this rock-solid collection of Southern Gospel vocal awesomeness. CHRISTA JORDAN | ALIVE If you took the best of 1980s Anthemic Arena-Rock (Queensryche, Dio, etc) and mixed it with some early 90s Crunch (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots) and filtered it through the eyes and ears of a young woman today… you’d have Christa Jordan. Ms. Jordan is clearly influenced by her parent’s generation of Heavy Rock. But in lieu of fist-pumping party anthems, Christa Jordan delivers a sonic blast of positivity and hope. The single “Dreams Come True” (official video available on Youtube) takes a very simple sentiment of never giving up, and serves it up heavy and hard. 6 of the 8 songs are relentless rockers with fearless vocals and enough fuzzy guitar riffing to satisfy Rock-N-Roll appetites both young and old… with the lead-off track “Stand Against The Storm” being the clear standout. Christa Jordan rocks hard — real hard. And she does so with grace, clarity and an overall message that keeps her right with God. You go girl! While playing basketball at Ellis Park in Danville, Indiana, Levi Riggs learned of the tragic death of his friend, Josh Miner, who was killed test-driving a motorcycle. Levi drove through the night with Josh’s brother and close friend, J.T., to pick up his other brother Jason, who was stranded in Chicago, so the boys could be together as a family. Levi was unsure of what to say, he never said a word to either of them; he just had to be there for them. When he got home, Levi poured out his heavy heart to his sister, Lauren Riggs. Together, they penned the story of Josh Miner in “Headed Home.” DJs, you will want to check this single on the first track of this HMG Compilation. BECKY MOORE – “Lay It Down” Tempo: SLOW HMG Adult/Contemporary Single Becky Moore is a talented artist who recently released her single “Lay It Down.” The lyrics to this song mirrors Becky’s life journey of learning to lay down her own expectations and trusting that the Lord will make His Way glaringly obvious. Becky’s Country roots and Gospel Soul create a compelling sound. Raised singing in churches throughout the south, Becky’s artistry comes straight from her heart. Her love of Country music and the spirit of the “silver-lined” life, that soulful Country music inherently possesses, has always had a magnetic pull for Becky. She doesn’t just have the heart to sing big songs; she also has the voice to sing them with excellence. Music has and will always be the best way for Becky to share her mission, which is to take each listener’s focus off of their troubles and point them towards the healing power of Christ Jesus. 64 June 2014 BONITA ADELE “Happy Hour In Heaven” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville Power Gospel Single There’s a first time for everything and “Happy Hour In Heaven” is here. A lot of songs have been written about Heaven, but it’s never been written this way! Singer-songwriter Bonita Adele penned “Happy Hour In Heaven” from her heart. It has an infectious melody that will make you press play again. Bonita is giving praise to Jesus Christ and expressing that HE will be the host and everybody will be happy in a land where there is no pain, no sorrow, no tears just forevermore joy. This song talks about reuniting with friends and loved ones. The video takes you down streets of Heaven and gives you an idea of what Bonita feels in her heart that Heaven will be like. This is her second single; Bonita gained recognition with “Cross on the Wall” in 2013 and she is back. The “Happy Hour In Heaven” video is under the Production of Parade Stormer who is a major player in video production on Music Row in Nashville. Give it a spin. JOE LOFTUS “Little Hands Little Feet” Tempo: SLOW HMG Nashville IC Single The secong single release from Joe Loftus is “Little Hands Little Feet,” from his latest CD Can’t Take The US From The USA. Joe recalls that it was the fourth song he’d ever written back in 1983, and it only took 10 minutes. He explains, “After watching a little baby lying on the couch, I admired the little hands and feet. God planted this urge in me to write this song and the words just flowed onto the paper.” Joe adds, “After recording the song back in September, I finally met this little girl, now 30, who just had her own baby.” This heartwarming tune is sure to become a favorite among listeners. It is both uplifting and catchy. “I Can’t Help But Smile” is just one of the songs on Eric’s Down Here On The Island album recorded in Nashville. Eric has been writing, singing and performing in Florida and Nashville for 13 years, infusing his Country music with an island-flair. Eric loves performing live, and, when you are at an Eric Von show, you will feel as if he is performing just for you by the way he engages with the crowd. While growing up, she sang in a group called The Spirituals. Then, her focus grew to work and as a single mother of two children, Josh and Amber. Her strong passion for the Lord drew her back to singing. And while singing at a rodeo bible camp, where her kids were attending, she met Jeff Hogner. A short time later, Carol and Jeff got married and Carol gained two more daughters, Hannah and Halee. As a family they traveled to team roping events as Joshua Cowboy Ministries for nearly 15 years. Her husband was promoted to Heaven five years ago. Now she continues to travel all over the United States and into Canada putting on church services and concerts. Her witty, down-to-earth country personality captures all who encounter her. Her new Single “Ordinary Things” is at radio now released by HMG Nashville. JERAD BRIDGES “I Was Wrong” Tempo: SLOW HMG Nashville Country Single Jerad’s first public show was in October 2012, and over two hundred people crowded the bar. He was bombarded with people wanting more, so his band, Bastion Cavalier, began writing their own material as well as playing cover songs. The band and Jerad’s musical ability was a blessing in disguise because he was soon forced to quit his job in the oil field. Jerad immediately placed all of his money and time into furthering his music career. His love of Country music at an early age helped to prepare him for his new self-penned single, “I Was Wrong,” just released to Country radio and all Music Row stations. Jerad’s heart is in the right place, and his mind-set is nothing less than a major label deal. Jennifer’s promotion to Music Row, as well as Inspirational Country, started in early 2014. Jennifer Nickerson is a new light in the darkness. She seems to spread hope wherever she sings. God calls people for different things in life, and Jennifer has a call of God that goes above and beyond. She is a singer-songwriter, who is working on taking her music career to the next level. Best wishes to Jennifer. GARY DEAN HEISEY “Miracles” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 203 Gary Dean Heisey is a successful businessman, world traveler, evangelist, singer and songwriter. He has been singing and doing missionary work for most of his life. His latest single, “Miracles,” is written as an eyewitness account of Jesus’ life on earth, and the many miracles that followed. As the song goes, “I watched him walk on water/saw Him give the blind their sight/and I was there when He raised the dead/giving His brand new life/we were with Him on the mountain/with the five thousand He fed/and after it was over/Twelve baskets-full were left.” The song goes on to explain that there are more miracles than man can count and there are more miracles than books can hold. If you are around Gary Dean Heisey very long you will find out the greatest miracle of all is that God would send his only son Jesus to pay the price for you and me. DONNA SAMMARCO “On Eagle’s Wings” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Instrumental Single “On Eagles’ Wings” is a beautiful Christian song composed by Michael Joncas and is generally based on Psalm 91 and Isaiah 40:31. It was written in 1975-1976 and is published by New Dawn Music, associated with Oregon Catholic Press. It has been adopted by both Catholic (including papal masses) and Protestant (including Pentecostal) audiences. The image is that of many eagles lifting up multiple people in covenant with God. This arrangement was done by Mark Hayes, a highly talented Christian composer and arranger – a Dove Award winner. There is nothing that can reach deep inside the human soul, change a mood or lift your spirit quite like music. And the most powerful music occurs when a beautiful composition is born, shaped and molded by an insightful and gifted arranger, and then delivered to the listener’s ear by the hands of a sensitive and talented performer. This is a rare event and is what happened in the song, “On Eagles’ Wings.” June 2014 65 PowerSource 06_14_PowerSource 06_14 5/13/14 1:46 PM Page 66 Promotions CHRISTA JORDAN “Wanna Go With Me” KALI ROSE & DENNIS AGAJANIAN “Thank You For The Father You’ve Been” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville Country Single Christa Jordan is a tremendous singer-songwriter from Birmingham, Alabama. She grew up in music — traveling and singing since she was two years old! Christa is not only a gifted singer, but she plays guitar like one of the boys! She knew from an early age music was what she would do for the rest of her life. Now, after years of countless shows and hard work, Christa Jordan has ® finally stepped on the scene! Working with Grammy Awardwinning producers, her new single “Wanna Go With Me” launches this summer! She says, “‘Wanna Go With Me’ makes you wanna grab some friends, jump in the truck and head to the country or the water, or wherever that little spot is. It’s definitely a feel-good, summer-time jam that will leave you smiling and moving your feet!” Every so often the music world is given a new gift, and that has certainly happened with Christa Jordan. There’s no doubt she’ll go far. We got our invitation to come along; you can hear it in her new song when she asks us “Wanna Go With Me.” RED LETTER BAND “Bring Me” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 203 Led vocally by a husband/wife duo, the Red Letter Band plays quality Country music with a clear message about real-life relationships with God and each other. The song “Bring Me” is a song for those who may be honestly struggling to feel God’s presence in their trials. It asks God to bring them in close as only he can, and to bring them to his table of protection, as Psalm 23 talks about. Often in these hard times it is such a help just to know we are loved by God, and that it is what this person’s heart needs, as they walk through the valley of the shadow [of death]. GAIL COGBURN “I’ve Got A Bottle” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 203 66 Gail Cogburn is a singer-songwriter and her new single, “I’ve Got A Bottle,” is from her current album. He reminded her that every tear shed has been bottled up in Heaven; that He is aware of every heart-ache and that the pain is never forgotten. As the lyrics go, “you have a bottle holding every tear that you have ever shed” With many heartaches behind her and some she is still battling, Gail tells everyone to travel life’s journey knowing not one thing you will ever suffer will be in vain. One day we will hear him say, ‘enter into Heaven my faithful child, a job well done.’ Gail has received many awards through her 30 year journey, but says her greatest award is still yet to come! Her mother Carol Greenwood is her inspiration, not only in music but also in life. “What a thrill it was to produce Melissa doing something so dear to her heart — praising the Lord in song,” states Jack Gale & Jim Pierce, producers of this song. “With her Pentecostal background, she was doing something she had wanted to do all her life. The minute she started to sing, we knew we were having more than a recording session. A nostalgic fiddle, tender dobro and engaging vocals make this track a favorite for lovers of Hymns and faith-based Country music. About recording the song, Greer shares, “I first sang these lines during the invitation time at my hometown church, just on the fringes of West Texas. A lot of life has been lived since I left those rural roots for Nashville over 10 years ago. There are good memories, as well as unpleasant ones, but He has always been there for me. These chorus words (circa 1880) to ‘come home’ continually draws me back to the Friend I learned about as a child, and have come to trust as an adult.” June 2014 67 PowerSource 06_14_PowerSource 06_14 5/13/14 1:46 PM Page 68 Promotions JADA HITE KING “A Beautiful Lady” Tempo: SLOW/MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 204 Jada Hite King would like to thank all of her supporters and the radio DJs. WES JAMES “What Jesus Died For” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 203 Wes James’ third release “What Jesus Died For” is about a sermon he heard in a little church in north central Texas where he was leading worship for a revival. The pastor really got his attention when he started talking about all the things we think we need and sometimes pray for. The theme behind the sermon was that Jesus did not die on the cross for us to have nice cars, houses or anything a person can possess. He died on the cross for our sins in order that if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, in return we receive the greatest gift of all, eternal life. We are blessed living in the United States with all the opportunities and conveniences. But the Lord Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we are allowed to choose to have the greatest gift. BRUCE & BETSY MULLEN “Two Doors Down From Jesus” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 204 68 Written by Bruce Mullen, the song idea came from visiting with friends and their conversation about Grandma. Grandma always stated that she was going to have a mansion right next door to Jesus. Our friend wanted to have a mansion right next door to Grandma to be two doors down from Jesus. They told stories about Grandma, an Indian Medicine woman, back in the early 1900s. When Doctors had patients that were at the end of their lives they would ask Grandma to take care of them. Grandma was instrumental in leading them to Jesus and getting them on the right path. Since Bruce and Betsy have been performing this song on stage, the requests have outnumbered any other song they sing. People refer to it as the ‘Grandma Song.’ It is touching all age groups, because many people have lost a special Grandma. Bruce and Betsy re-recorded “Two Doors Down From Jesus” in Nashville, Tennessee, for the radio release with some of Nashville’s finest musicians. Cherie says, “It’s so easy to get caught up in your day-to-day life; it’s fast-paced and has so many ups and downs that you forget to spend that precious quiet time with God and listen for God’s guidance, which keeps you from making all those stupid mistakes we all regret. But even when we find ourselves in trouble, God is always there to help and save us when we turn to our loving Father. And when we learn to pray first before we rush into things, we always have a better outcome.” “911” is sure to be a big hit! RICK HOIBERG “Jesus Loves Me” Tempo: MEDIUM HMG Nashville IC Vol. 204 For his first single, Rick Hoiberg is releasing the timeless hymn and Bible song “Jesus Loves Me.” The song has been arranged to have a more contemporary upbeat sound, yet there is still a fiddle for the sound that puts it right at home with Inspirational Country Music. This song is arguably as well known as “Amazing Grace” and “Silent Night.” It is taught by parents and teachers to their children, translated into most major languages and sung by children in every nation on the face of the earth. Jesus’ love was not a passing affection but an abiding, self-sacrificing devotion according to John 15:9-17. In a special surprise towards the end of the song, Rick is joined by his beloved granddaughters, Makayla and Sydney, for the final two choruses. “Jesus Loves Me” is a song you will want for your music collection to listen to over and over.
