In 2003, the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style was met with dismay and disappointment. Users noted
there were too many options and too many “acceptable” practices. CMS 16, released simultaneously online and
in print last year, is advertised as offering “firmer rules and clearer recommendations.” Join Alice Levine and
your colleagues in an exploration and discussion of the new sections and rule changes in the 16th edition.

Production/Design Track
Optimizing Digital Production Workflows
A panel of printers and publishers will provide an overview of the basic elements of efficient digital production workflows—from content management to supply chain optimization. You will hear how some publishers
are already using a variety of digital tools to simplify the process of going from unedited Word files to print
and e-book output. And you will learn how to use a combination of POD, DSR, and offset printing to align
supply with demand and avoid storing too many books (cash!) in a warehouse. The panel will present two case

studies—The Autobiography of Mark Twain and The Book of Awakening—to illustrate how publishers can keep
up with sudden spikes in demand without building up excessive inventory.

the short-to-intermediate term so that they can fund their transition. Presenters will analyze PubWest Industry Operations and Salary Report and review relevant measures of operational and financial performance to

Cross-training sessions give everyone the chance to learn something new and outside
their normal work. Take a look at how other parts of publishing approach problems

Smart publishers can beat the odds and make money from books by branding product lines and actively managing their permissions program. In this session, learn how to develop and implement a product line branding
strategy and the legal protection inherent in this approach. Also included will be a practical skills session on best
practices for obtaining clearances to use third-party content for published works in print and new media, identifying proper rights holders, orphan works, securing necessary rights, plagiarism, and the increasing importance
of reproduction rights organizations to the permissions process.

The common notion has been that publishing books with environmentally responsible or recycled materials

Publishers are now designing a new reading experience. Why aren’t text-based e-books enough? How can

they seem to connect with most and which haven’t worked so well? What is the learning and retention value
of enhanced features? Panelists will discuss the ongoing process of transforming their publishing companies
to embrace the digital future, including enhanced e-books, app development, and online community services.
They’ll also discuss using self-assessments, rethinking roles, and changing processes to create flexible and agile
organizations.

If you need to order additional meal/party tickets or exhibit hall passes, please contact the PubWest office.
Before September 30, 2011, cancellations may be made for the full amount of tuition, less a $75 processing fee.
Between September 30 and October 7, 2011, the cancellation fee is 75 percent of tuition.
No tuition refunds will be given after Friday, October 7, 2011.

Hotel Information The PubWest Conference 2011 will be hosted by Green Valley Ranch Resort, which is located
just outside Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada. This luxury property has something for everyone: lovely grounds, heated pools, fine
dining, and a spa for those looking for a relaxing respite from the office. There is a movie theater on-property and an outdoor
shopping mall adjacent to the resort. For those looking for a Vegas experience, the resort includes a casino and has free shuttle
service to the Strip.
Complimentary amenities include a daily newspaper; in-room coffee; high-speed Internet access; access to the resort’s spa,
including a lap pool, hot tub, and exercise facility (spa services require an additional fee); free parking; and shuttle service to and
from the airport and the Las Vegas Strip. These amenities add up to a $25 daily savings.
Hotel Room Reservation Deadline: Wednesday, October 12, 2011. PubWest has reserved a discounted
block of rooms for conference attendees, but the number of rooms is limited. Proceeds from room reservations support PubWest,
and hotel guests earn a discount on conference registration.
Room Rate for Single or Double Occupancy: Traditional rooms are $119 per night, plus tax. This
special conference guest room rate will also apply three days before and after the official conference dates, based on availability.
This is a chance to combine business trips or take a little extra time for rest and relaxation in Las Vegas!

Shuttle Services
Green Valley Ranch Resort offers free shuttle service from the airport eight times each day: 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30
p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 9:30 p.m. The shuttle is a fourteen-passenger van and service is first come, first served.
Pick up is at the airport’s Zero Level.
