2012 European Figure Skating Championships
5 SUMMARY Figure skating became much more competitive. The new scoring system allows higher possibilities in changes of the ranking between the short program and the free skating. Under the old judging system based on placement marks it was very difficult for a skater to climb up for more than three places after a failed short program. The final ranking of a competition is connected to more surprise. The programs choreography became more complex and various due to the new regulation. Skaters and their coaches can analyze the Judges details, which tell what their strengths and weaknesses are. This means that the ice skates the man was wearing must have sharp edges similar to those found on modern ice skates 6 ANNEX 6.1 LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://media.thenewstribune.com/static/ images/olympics/info/20091215_OLY_Skating_jump.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.t henewstribune.com/olympics/&usg=__W6IWBJd5OHTlayeKxQcO76mOlEw=&h=2 232&w=1138&sz=428&hl=de&start=34&zoom=1&tbnid=InCuMZdxfldkZM:&tbnh= 176&tbnw=90&ei=O465TYy0MtGLswbp16jrAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfigure%2Bs kating%2Bjumps%26hl%3Dde%26sa%3DX%26rlz%3D1C1DXCB_enHU398HU407%2 6biw%3D1280%26bih%3D699%26tbm%3Disch0%2C738&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=424& page=2&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:10,s:34&tx=10&ty=125&biw=1280&bih=699 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Olympic_medalists_in_figure_skating http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figure_skating_jumps http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://24.media.tumblr.com/HMYQgMD rx8fzss76oOoBL0Eq_500.png&imgrefurl=http://yourmonkeycalled.com/post/3336 2668/holy-mackerel-there-are-lots-of-differentfigure&usg=__imvCsZXqav8cA9ag7aEcLD_octk=&h=488&w=500&sz=471&hl=de&s tart=0&zoom=1&tbnid=dUyIpR8RD-PsGM:&tbnh=137&tbnw=140&ei=eI5TYn9EYjOswaG983rAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfigure%2Bskating%2Bspins%26hl %3Dde%26rlz%3D1C1DXCB_enHU398HU407%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D699%26t bm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=260&vpy=84&dur=350&hovh=184&hovw=189&t x=78&ty=132&page=1&ndsp=36&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0 http://www.freeweb.hu/bke/eredmtoe.htm /www.worldskatingmuseum.org/WHOF.htm http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://cdn.ngin.com/attachments/photo /0126/2435/step_sequence_large.png&imgrefurl=http://www.glacierskate.com/pa ge/show/67784-elements-taught-at-eachlevel&usg=__lYxbjBJ_a4WzA7Rm3G0n9FWGlDc=&h=1024&w=606&sz=54&hl=de& start=31&zoom=0&tbnid=XRKdeEZcn9YY4M:&tbnh=150&tbnw=89&ei=35C5TZ37G JDfsgbO1LDrAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfigure%2Bskating%2Bstep%2Bsequence% 26hl%3Dde%26rlz%3D1C1DXCB_enHU398HU407%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D699 %26site%3Dsearch%26tbm%3Disch0%2C423&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=356&page=2&nd sp=18&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:31&tx=27&ty=107&biw=1280&bih=699 & PRIVAT 175 6.2. The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) is to stage the International Skating Union (ISU) European Figure Skating Championships, which will take place at the Sheffield Arena in 2012. The city’s multi-million pound sports venue, iceSheffield, will be used as a training base for participants. NISA, the national governing body responsible for the development of the sport throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland, worked in partnership with Sheffield International Venues (SIV), Sheffield City Council’s Major Sports Event Unit, development agency Yorkshire Forward and UK Sport to put together a bid for the event. Keith Horton, chief executive of NISA, said: “We are very proud that we have been successful in our bid to host the European Figure Skating Championships in 2012.The announcement further highlights the support we have from the skating community. 179 2012 EUROPEAN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPION SHIP S 2012 European Figure Skating Championships Type: ISU Championship Date: January 23 – January 29, 2012 Season: 2011–2012 Sheffield, Great Britain Location: Sheffield Arena Venue: Defending champions Men's singles: Florent Amodio Ladies singles: Sarah Meier Pair skating: Aliona Savchenko / Robin Szolkowy Ice dancing: Nathalie Péchalat / Fabian Bourzat Navigation Previous: 2011 European Championships Next: 2013 European Championships The 2012 European Figure Skating Championships will be the European Championships of the 2011–2012 figure skating season. Team GB Photo Gallery 181 182 183 184 Introduction to Sheffield The city of Sheffield has something special which is very much appreciated by the local community, and its reputation is now growing worldwide. 185 It is not just the great shops, bars, restaurants, art galleries, museums and theatres that make it a popular place to visit, but also that Sheffield can boast that it is the safest and greenest city in the UK; over a third of the city lies within the boundary of the second most visited National Park in the world. Sheffield has always been a centre of creativity, whether it be related to science, music, high tech industry, sports or the arts, and it also has a fine heritage of cutlery and steel making. Sheffield has been the home of John Wilson skates, one of the most recognised names in the world of ice skating, for more than 300 years. The reputation of the John Wilson group was made in 1849 when Queen Victoria instructed the company to make a pair of skates for her and Prince Albert. Today John Wilson skates continue to be the premier blade choice for the World Elite Figure Skaters. Sheffield is ideal for skaters and their families as you will never be far away from one of 200 parks, woodlands or gardens and the city centre is actually less than 5 miles from the Peak District. There is so much to do in Sheffield, from enjoying the fantastic food in numerous cosmopolitan restaurants or relaxing in an array of cafes and bistros, to electrifying entertainment, exciting events and astounding attractions which are bound to get you hooked. The city centre buzzes with theatres, cinemas, and shops. Attractions outside the centre are usually reached by bus, tram and train or alternatively walking is an ideal way to explore the suburbs and their many green spaces. Sheffield was one of the first cities in the UK to introduce the super tram system. The tram provides clean, green access not only to the city centre but also to the shops and the many sporting venues, including the iceSheffield arena. "Following multi-million pounds investment, the Sheffield of today is unrecognisable and we know you will like what you find." 186 6.4.
