On Rosh Hashana we go to the temple. We pray to God for a new year of happiness and peace. We thank God for all the good things that have happened in the year that has just passed. We try to remember anything we have done wrong to anybody. We think about the things that are wrong with the world especially about people in trouble. We think about people who are out of work, who are sick, who are too poor to buy enough food for their families or too poor to have a place to call home. When we hear the shrill sound of the shofar we think about these things - and we pray that we'll be able to help people in trouble, to help make the world a better place for everybody. At the end of the synagogue service, we turn to our neighbours and wish them a Happy New Year. At home, Rosh Hashana begins with the lighting of the candles and singing of the Kiddush. On the table is a round challah and a bowl of apple slices and a dish of honey. The round challah is a symbol of a year of happiness without end. We did the slices of apple into the honey and eat it, with a wish that we shall have a good and sweet New Year, a year of happiness. Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year. Jewish people go to Synagogues to pray for happiness, health and peace in the coming year. In the Synagogue the shofar is blown. Long ago, the ram's horn was blown to tell Jews that the New Year was coming. When they heard it, all the people came together to pray. Today we still blow the shofar. At home we dip apples in honey and challah in honey, as a symbol of our hope that the coming year will be a sweet and joyous one. Other holiday treats include honey cookies and cake and a round challah with raisins. The round challah signifies a year without end. Cards are sent to family and friends to wish everyone a healthy New Year.
