Open-Mindedness and Thanksgiving
If the single thought of Joy and Gratitude is awakened in us,
We shall realize Nirvana without severing our blind passions,
When ordinary people and sages as well as those who commit the gravest
offenses and abusers of the Dharma are taken into the (Amida’s) Vow,
They become one in spiritual attainment, just as many rivers become one
taste upon entering the sea.
Shinran, Shoshinge, Verse 7,
translated by Hisao Inagaki, The Way of Nembutsu-Faith (1996, 33)
What will your thoughts be this
Thanksgiving season, as you
are encouraged to sincerely
open your minds to the purest
essence of gratitude for life’s
bounty and see how joyous you
can become in this ordinary
world? Isn’t this what our greatest teachers,
from Sakyamuni Buddha, to Shinran Shonin
and even Albert Einstein, have suggested?
“The mind that opens to a new idea never
returns to its original size.”
– Albert Einstein
“Your assumptions are your windows on
the world. Scrub them off every once in a
while, or the light won’t come in.”
– Isaac Asimov
We can wake up in the morning and go all day
thinking that everything is fine and that there is
nothing that can alter it. Yet living a life of routine created by our own notions of what is right,
comfortable, or suitable may just be an indicator of our blind narrow-mindedness. Falsely we
enjoy the confines of our own little world while
praising this self and not realizing that our
minds are still closed.
The other day as I was picking up my shirts at
the laundry, I proudly spotted my bunch of
clothes as it rode the rail of hangers greeting the
cashier. There they were—ten fresh shirts all in
blue, white, and off-blue, blended in happy
shades and patterns. Very predictable! Then I
noticed that there were many other groupings of
clothes of similar predictability. Hey, there are
other people just like me in this world! Our
clothes reflect our personality and traits. We are
what we wear. Am I so limited that my world is
always decorated with the same colors and
patterns? How odd that I can talk to others
about open-mindedness when I am not so wise
as to have observed my own repetitious mind
and personality. My body and mind are stuck in
a fixed routine of comfortable sameness. How
boring and dangerous.
A similar experience occurred when I was at the
Outlet Stores looking for sneakers. I went into
the New Balance store and studied at least
twenty styles to my liking. After half an hour of
browsing and trying on a few possibilities, I decided on a pair that seemed new, fresh, and exciting. The shoes were comfortable, clean, and
striking. I was happy to have ventured into a
new design in men’s footwear. Then I realized
something. They looked like my old shoes, so I
put the new and the old together and to my
surprise, they were identical, down to the same
style number. I had bought the same old NEW
shoes. What an idiot! Nothing new or progressive about this experience. Have you had such
encounters? I hope not.

On the other hand, I recently had a refreshing
and positive experience without even trying. As
you may know, my daughter recently got married. Her theme colors were pink and grey, so
for the first time, with the suggestion of my wife,
Patti, I bought a pink shirt and matching tie. I
received many compliments and had my eyes
opened to my habitual nature in the process.
to receive it. Our teachers have always guided
us to this reality, but if we listen only with our
old self-conditioned minds, we will continue to
be limited. In the Shoshinge, Shinran Shonin
personally shared these precise thoughts on
awakening to our true selves and being able to
feel the most sincere experience of Joy and
Gratitude in this life and in this self, today.
It is true that the mind that is closed will continue to be closed unless we “clean the window”
and really see all that is out there. The sincere
gratitude we can feel for boundless potential at
Thanksgiving and everyday will not become a
reality unless our hearts and minds are willing
If the single thought of Joy and Gratitude
is awakened in us,
We shall realize Nirvana without severing
our blind passions, …
Have a Great Thanksgiving.

Buddha Nature
The Teaching of Buddha (pages 65-69)
Three hundred & fifty-first revised edition, 2011
The Nembutsu promised in the Primal Vow of Amida Buddha
Is difficult for evil people who have wrong views and are arrogant
To receive and retain with Joyful Faith:
Of all difficulties nothing is more difficult than that.
We find in the Kyōgyōshinshō, Chapter on True
Practice, many passages quoted as evidence to
show the supreme merit and efficacy of the
Nembutsu. One of them, from Tao-cho’s Collection of Passages Concerning Birth in the Pure
Land of Peace and Bliss, has this to say:
Śākyamuni advised his father the King to
practice the Nembutsu Samādhi. The king
asked the Buddha, “Why do you not recommend the practice of realizing directly
the Buddha’s virtue, True Suchness, or
the highest principle of voidness?” The
Buddha replied, “The Buddhas’ virtue of
Enlightenment contains immeasurable
and subtle realms of realization accompanied by various supernatural powers and
knowledge of emancipation, which are not
objects of perception for an unenlightened
person. For this reason, I recommend to
you, my father the King, the Nembutsu
Samādhi.”
passage quoted above goes on to explain that in
the following parable:
Suppose there is a big forest of foul-smelling eranda trees, in which there is a young
sandalwood tree still under the ground.
When this tree grows above the ground, its
fragrance pervades the whole forest and
transforms it into a sweet-smelling forest.
The eranda forest refers to our evil passions and
defiled thoughts, and the sandalwood tree refers
to the Nembutsu. A single thought of concentration on and communication with the Buddha,
which is actually made possible by his boundless Mind Power, is capable of turning our evil
karma into the same merit as Amida’s.
No other Buddhist practice is easier to follow
than the Nembutsu Samādhi, but for those who
are misled by wrong teachings and believe in
their own power, the Nembutsu of the OtherPower is extremely difficult to accept. In this
regard we read in the Larger Sutra, in the Verses
on the Visits of Bodhisattvas to the Pure Land
(chap. 27)
Idealist Buddhists may try to enter straightway
into the heart of the Buddhas’ Enlightenment,
but their limited capacities and evil passions
inevitably create an iron barrier which defies
their penetration. The Nembutsu Samādhi
comes from Amida’s Heart and reaches each
one of those who humbly respond to his Call.
The Nembutsu Samādhi is not only practicable,
but is the most efficacious of all samādhis. The
Arrogant, corrupt and indolent people
Cannot readily accept this teaching.
But those who have met Buddha in the
past lives
Rejoice to hear it.

Shinran Shonin calls wrong-viewed and arrogant people ‘evil’ in the same sense that they
reject the right Dharma and the law of karma
and so take the path to degeneration and
destruction. But who are not wrong-viewed until
and unless they encounter Amida, the embodiment of the right Dharma? Also, who are not
arrogant unless they meet Amida’s Light of
Great Compassion? We are by nature selfcentered, and our frame of thought is naturally
constructed on the blind belief in the ego and
the power which is appears to possess. As we
hear and ponder on the Dharma over and over,
we come to realize that what exists in the true

Amitāyus, which is all-pervasive all-inclusive,
and everlasting. When our eyes are opened to
this ultimate reality by being endowed with the
Nembutsu-Faith, all our delusory mental
constructs disappear like dew on a blade of
grass in the morning sun.
Śākyamuni and Amida are our
Compassionate Parents;
By employing various skillful means
Have awakened in our minds
The supreme Faith beyond compare.

BWA NEWS by Connie Yahata
BWA met on September 7, for
our monthly meeting. Shirley
Ito reported on the results of
the Sushi Booth. For the first
si n ce sh e h as ch ai r e d t he
booth, 30-40 boxes of sushi
were given away on Saturday;
however, there were fewer giveaways on Sunday.
Chirashi sold out, as did the ever-popular Spam
Musubi. Connie Yahata reported that curry sold
out on both days. We will definitely sell curry
again next year. Regarding membership, Kayo
announced that there are 54 paid members and
4 honorary members. Jacqui Pierce, Historian,
continues to compile photos for the 2014 BWA
booklet. If you have any photos, please be sure
to send them to her. As an on-going project,
Connie is continuing to collect recipes for the
cookbook project.
QUESTION:
DOES ANYONE HAVE A COPY OF A WLABT COOKBOOK?
If so, please contact Connie Yahata
([email protected]) or the temple office.
DO YOU NEED PANKO?
We still have some for sale - $2.00/per 12 oz. bag.
Once again, BWA will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the children of Vista del Mar.
Last year, I delivered a van full of toys and the
donations were very much appreciated. Help us
bring joy to the children again this holiday

PRESIDENT OBAMA SENDS “WARMEST WISHES” TO RICK STAMBUL
by Sei Shohara
Rick was an activist participant in both the March
on Washington and Freedom Summer. He was
starting his senior year in high school when he
went on the March. Then, in a speech to his
graduating class in June 1964, he focused on the
goals of the March, and challenged his classmates
to join him in fighting for Freedom Summer.
You all know Rick as a very active member and
contributor to our Temple, including service as our
President for two years. Those of you who know
him personally know him as thoughtful and
reserved. You may be surprised then with the
story of how President Obama’s “warmest wishes”
to Rick came about. The following excerpts from
Wikipedia provide some necessary background:
Before proceeding to Mississippi, Rick was sent to
Oxford, Ohio for orientation and training. Here
each volunteer was assigned to coordinators experienced in southern white culture. Rick was
assigned to Michael Schwerner because Schwerner
liked what he saw in a copy of Rick’s graduation
speech. In time, Rick came to think of Schwerner
as his dearest friend and “older brother,” and has
grieved his death in private to this day.
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom …
was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in
United States history and called for civil and economic
rights for African Americans. It took place in Washington,
D.C. (at the National Mall). Thousands of Americans
headed to Washington on Tuesday, August 27, 1963. On
Wednesday, August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr.,
standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his
historic “I Have a Dream” speech …
What Freedom Summer was like is documented in
the informative PBS video “Freedom Summer.” At
about 52 minutes and 42 seconds into the video,
you will see Rick being dragged on the ground by a
policeman (the scene lasts only a second or so).
The 1963 march was an important part of the rapidly
expanding Civil Rights Movement, which involved
demonstrations and nonviolent direct action across the
United States. …
The march is credited with helping to pass the Civil
Rights Ac t (1964) and motivating the Selma to
Montgomery marches which led to the passage of the
Voting Rights Act (1965).
On this 50th anniversary year of the passage of the
Civil Rights Act, and 49th year of the Voting Rights
Act, we also add our warmest wishes to Rick.
Freedom Summer … was a campaign in the United
States launched in June 1964 … to register as many
African-American voters as possible in Mississippi, which
had historically excluded most blacks from voting. …”
… The volunteers’ presence in local black communities
sparked drive-by shootings, Molotov cocktails, and
constant harassment. State and local governments …
used arrests, arson, beatings, evictions, firing (from jobs),
murder, spying, and other forms of intimidation … to …
prevent blacks from registering to vote or achieving
social equality.
On June 21, 1964, James Chaney (a black … activist
…), Andrew Goodman (a summer volunteer), and
Michael Schwerner (a[n] … organizer) - … were arrested
… (and) held in jail until after nightfall, then released.
They drove away into an ambush on the road by
Klansmen, who abducted and killed them.
------------(This writer thanks Rick for permission to write this article, and
apologizes for the “arm-twisting” to elicit that permission. Rick
has been silent about these events for all these years because
he did not want to draw attention to himself regarding them.)
Excerpt from President Obama’s Letter:
“… Stories like yours demonstrate that people who love this country can change it,
and I appreciate your support for our shared values.
The progress of the past five decades would not have been possible without
courageous men and women like you, who left Footprints on our National Mall and
fought to ensure the right to vote was truly extended to all Americans. In the face of
bigotry, fear, and unyielding opposition, you helped push our country toward a more
perfect Union, and today I am one of the humble many who stand on your shoulders.
I trust you take great pride in all you have achieved, and I send my warmest wishes
… I trust you take great pride in all you have achieved, and I send my warmest
wishes …”

BUDDHIST MEN
BUSY NOVEMBER CALENDAR FOR AND AID TO THE TEMPLE SANGHA
The November Temple calendar is filled with
many activities for voluntary duties from the
Buddhist Men.
At the November 23 Thanksgiving service, the
Sangha has an opportunity to thank Rev.
Fumiaki Usuki for his ten years of service as
our resident minister. All Buddhist Men should
attend this celebration of a milestone in the
history of WLABT.
The November 2 Longevity (Kanreki) Party is our
way of honoring those who have reached the
“magic” ages, for which we are grateful. Milton
Iwamoto, President of the Buddhist Men, along
with Hidemi Ohkawahira (Membership Chair)
wish to hear names of those attaining 100 years
of age, 90, 88, 80, and so forth.
BUDDHIST MEN, ELECTION TIME AGAIN
This is the time to think about officers of the
Buddhist Men for 2015. With the declining
active membership, it might be time to think
“outside the box” and consider alternatives to
serving the Temple and Sangha in other ways
such as restructuring the organization, reviewing our functions within the Temple to designate
a way of getting the functions done, or getting
tasks done through a “toban” system.
Some will be involved with the annual Eitaikyo
service on November 9.
In November, Buddhist Men are responsible for
folding the Temple Newsletter and getting them
ready for send-out. Help is welcome.
COMMUNITY NEWS: BIRTH OF SAWTELLE JAPANTOWN ASSOCIATION

This Council bridges residents to the elected
officials of Council District 11. Additional Sawtelle Nikkei were elected in June to the WLANC
through lobbying efforts of the ad-hoc Sawtelle
Japantown Association.
On-going activities include Reunion III this year,
the Gakuin 90 th anniversary celebration in
December 2015, and the Sawtelle 100 Festival
proposed by Ted Tanaka.
To date, some small successes. A petition drive
