Chino Airport hosts Planes of Fame Air Show
“A
Salute to the Greatest Generation,” paying tribute to the veterans
whose service and sacrifice saved
the world from Axis tyranny during World
War II, will be the theme of the County of
San Bernardino Planes of Fame Air Show
2010. The Air Show will take place at the
Chino Airport over the weekend of May 1516. Gates will open at 8am and flying activities will begin at approximately 11am.
Throughout the weekend, an exciting
variety of classic warbirds and modern jets,
like the Air Force’s F-16 Fighting Falcon
strike fighter and massive C-17 Globemaster
III transport, Unlimited Class air racers and
aerobatic aircraft, will thrill and delight the
crowds. The Horsemen P-51 Flight Team,
brought to Chino by ASB.TV, will highlight
the action with a sparkling formation aerobatic routine in North American P-51 Mustangs.
Flown by Jim Beasley, Dan Friedkin and Ed
Shipley, The Horsemen’s Mustangs originally
provided the long range fighter escort support
that made possible America’s strategic bombing offensives against Germany and Japan.
Supporting acts will include the Silver
Wings Wingwalking Team of Margaret
Stivers and Hartley Folstad, with Margaret
performing daring and graceful routines on
the wings of Hartley’s Stearman biplane. Rob
“Tumbling Bear” Harrison will also perform a
breathtaking aerobatic routine in his Czechoslovakian-built Zlin 50 XL monoplane.
A host of visiting warbirds, classic and
vintage aircraft will join the Planes of Fame
Air Museum warbirds in World War II
and Korean War air combat re-enactments,
airpower demonstrations, flybys and aerobatic
displays. There will also be an Unlimited
Class air racing demonstration featuring Bill
“Tiger” Destefani’s “Strega,” a highly modified P-51 Mustang and eight-time winner of
the Reno Unlimited National Championship
air racing title.
Aircraft, military vehicles and aviationrelated items will also be on static display for
up-close public viewing.
There will even be opportunities for
some in the audience to experience the thrill
of orientation flights in genuine warbirds.
May, 2010 Inland Entertainment Review
Vintage warbirds and other aircraft will fill the sky above
Chino over the weekend of May 15-16 for the County of
San Bernardino Planes of Fame Air Show 2010.
Numerous food, beverage and memorabilia
vendors will be on hand as well to make the
experience even more enjoyable.
General admission for the show will be
$20, youngsters 5 to 11 will be admitted for
$5, and admission is free for accompanied
children under five. One youngster will also
be admitted free with each paid adult. Advance discount tickets will be available from
the Museum’s gift shop until May 14 for $16.

Get on track at the Garden Railroad Show
T
rains fascinate those of all ages. Many
of us have a fond train story such as
the memory of riding a train, playing
with a train or of a relative that worked for
the railroad. The Southwest Garden Railroad Show was started to spread the fun and
excitement of garden railroading to all and
the Fairplex in Pomona, with their garden
railroad and the train museum, is without a
doubt the best place to hold such an event.
This is The Southwest Garden Railroad
Show’s second year year presenting the wonderful world of large scale railroading. The
show will be held on June 5-6, from 9am
to 4pm right across from a world renown
railroad.
The Fairplex Garden Railroad is
considered the oldest and possibly the
largest miniature railroad of its kind
in the United States and possibly the
world. The railroad began as a special
static exhibit for the third Los Angeles
Fair in 1924. It soon became a small,
hand built, operating miniature train, in
true 1/2 inch scale. The small railroad
continued to grow and in 1935, moved
out of the Fair's tent to its present 100
x 300-foot outdoor location where it
remains today. In May of 1997, with
the help of members of a local garden
railroad club, the original 1/2 inch scale
was replaced with what is referred to
today as G gauge in the hobby of model
railroading, and renovation of the miniature railroad began.
G-gauge train is one of the larger sizes
of model trains. Typically, they are placed
in a garden outdoors. Numerous arboretums across the country now boast a garden
railroad. Last year alone, Garden Railroad
Magazine reported that 35 new public garden railroads were built around the country.
Epcot at Disney World has had one for a
number of years.
The displays are an indoor version built
by local clubs and hobbyists from California, Arizona and Texas. Hobbyists are in it
for the fun and fellowship. This size of train
is great for children as they are able to get
close and enjoy. There are normally no walls
or barriers and most of the layouts are on
the ground or at least at children’s eye level.
In addition to the trains, Radio Disney
will be there with a stage show and fun
activities for the kids.
For kids 16 and under admission is free.
Adults are $10 or $18 for a two day pass. IER

Walk for a Cure
Arthritis Foundation Inland Empire
Branch’s ‘2010 Arthritis Walk’
By Natasha Ferguson
D
id you know that an estimated 46
million adults in the United States
have some form of arthritis or
chronic joint pain? It is projected that an
estimated 67 million will be diagnosed
with arthritis by the year 2030 according
to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
Contrary to belief, this crippling disease
does not just affect adults, but children as
well.
In order to continue with research in
preventing, controlling and hopefully one
day coming up with a cure for this debilitating disease, supporting the Arthritis
Foundation is key.
The Arthritis Foundation Inland
Empire Branch’s “2010 Arthritis Walk”
takes place Saturday, June 5, at Fairmount
Park, 2601 Fairmount Blvd. in Riverside.
Walkers from all over the region will participate in this walk to help raise money
and awareness for the disease. Registration
begins at 8am and the walk will start at
10:30am leaving from the band shell.
Each year, the Arthritis Foundation
Inland Empire recognizes special individuals and/or organizations. This year’s
honorees are:
Adult Honoree: Keturah D.
McEwen is not just the first
adult honoree in the Pacific
Region, but also the first
African American woman
honored by the organization.
Youth Honoree: Max
Layman is a smart, loving
10-year-old boy who sadly
was diagnosed with juvenile
rheumatoid arthritis while in
the first grade.
Medical Honorees: Dr. Razzouk is
CEO of Arrowhead Orthopaedics, an
outpatient and inpatient care facility that
has been established for over 20 years.
For more information about Arthritis
Walk, or if you are interested in participating, call (951) 320-1540 or visit www.

t Chili Cook-off
Arlington Business Partnership presents
the ‘Biggest Little Event of the Season’
Riverside’s 8th Annual
Chili Cook off and Car/
Motorcycle Show
H
ot chili, cool cars, moving music ... it
all comes together late May in downtown Riverside. The 8th Annual
Chili Cook-Off and Car/Motorcycle Show
on Saturday, May 29 are hosted by the Arlington Business Partnership. It takes place
on a half-mile stretch of Magnolia Avenue
from Van Buren Boulevard to Jackson Street
in Riverside from 9:30am to 5pm. This year’s event will be bigger than
ever, including two stages with local bands.
The main stage this year will again feature
Cubo and the community stage will rock
with a new group called Factory Tuned
Band. Bring your dancing shoes and be
ready to boogie with these two great bands.
In addition to the classic car show, the
event also features a motorcycle competition. Last year over 150 cars and motorcycles participated for the audience to enjoy
and judge. They even had some competition racing boats showing last year.
The Kids Zone is a magical place for
youngsters to spend their time and energy.
It includes inflatables, Waterwars, exotic
petting zoo, coloring contest, train rides,
rock climbing and many more fun and
entertaining things to do.
The event also hopes to attract even
more “little citizens” for the “Little Mr.
Hot Sauce” and “Little Miss Chili Peppers”
contests. Children up to 12 years of age are
welcome with great prizes for winners and
gifts for all participants. Parents can sign
up their children at the Main Stage the day
of the event.
The Chili Cook off also features handcrafted arts and crafts, business booths,
food booths, beer gardens, wine bar and
chili prepared by the International Chili
Society cooks who compete for international prizes.
But the most fun is in tasting and judging local chili by cooks vying for the title of
“Best Community Cook.” Bring your taste
buds and be ready to vote.
If you are a chili cook who loves to show
off your chili this a contest for you! Events
include People’s Choice for the best Chili
and even Salsa. Call the ABP office (951509-1100) for an application and further
details.
Every year the Arlington Business Part-
nership makes a financial contribution to
two local organizations, Boy Scout Troop
116 and Arlington High School’s ROTC
program.
This is a free entry event. For event details or for vendor information, call (951)

Bill Cosby performs at the
Fox Performing Arts Center
O
ne of America’s funniest people comes
to the Fox Performing Arts Center
stage on June 5 when Bill Cosby takes
the mike at 5pm and 8:30pm. Over the past
century, few entertainers have achieved the
legendary status of William H. Cosby Jr. His
successes span five decades and virtually all
media, remarkable accomplishments for a kid
who emerged from humble beginnings in a
Philly project.
In the 1960s, his stand-up act was a coastto-coast sensation, spawning a string of hilarious, best-selling comedy albums, which went
on to win eight Gold Records, five Platinum
records and five Grammy Awards. His role on
TV’s I Spy made him the first African-Amer-

ican to co-star in a dramatic series, breaking
television’s racial barrier and winning three
Emmy Awards. In the 1980s, he again rocked
the television world with the The Cosby Show,
a gentle, whimsical and hugely successful
series that single-handedly revived the family
sitcom (and rescued NBC).
With hit movies like Uptown Saturday
Night and best-selling books like Fatherhood,
Bill Cosby is quite simply a national treasure
with the unique ability to touch people’s
hearts.

A fascinating exploration of issues of artistic inspiration, history, and censorship. Spanning 193
years and based on real events, this play in four parts traces the history of the sociopolitical
response to Francisco Goya’s masterpiece “Naked Maja” from the time of its creation in 1798
Spain to America and the recent legal case involving the work.

Fontana’s Art Depot Gallery presents ‘Stoneware Snapshots’
V
isit the Fontana Art Depot Gallery and
view the newest Artist Showcase on
display featuring sculptures by Norman
Deesing. The exhibition titled “Stoneware
Snapshots” captures dramatic moments in
people’s lives.
Deesing states, “I have created a group of
sculptures which capture the dramatic moments in the lives of people. Like snapshots
in time, I use the three dimensional human
figure to tell stories of stirring human
dramas that surround us all. Beauty, greed,
tragedy, love, life and death are just some
of the elements of people’s lives represented
within the Stoneware Snapshots collection.”
Norman Deesing is a figurative sculptor
specializing in the female form. In 1984,
Deesing graduated from UC Davis with an
undergraduate degree in Fine Art methods,
including ceramics. At Davis, he studied under well known artists such as Robert Arneson for ceramics, and Wayne Thiebeau for
painting. After graduation, Deesing worked
in many arts related specialties: graphic
design, printing and photography. He later
began teaching ceramic sculpture in 2000.
Teaching ceramic arts for over a decade at
the high school level is especially rewarding
to Deesing as he works hard to inspire and
mentor young artists, many of whom are
at-risk teens. In addition, it has allowed for
a long-awaited focus on one particular art
form: sculpture.

R
iverside Community Players announced open call auditions for

uproarious musical satire with music and
lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin and
book by George S. Kaufman. The production is directed by Jennifer Young Lawson

Auditions will be held on Monday and
Tuesday, May 17 and 18, at 7pm at the Riverside Community Players at 4026 Fourteenth Street in Riverside between Magnolia

range and personality. Another contrasting song should be prepared in the event
that one is requested. Auditioners should
wear clothing appropriate for moving and

that they have with the rehearsal schedule.
“This show is rarely produced, and we
feel as if we have unearthed a gem. The
story line is so wacky and satirical that the
audiences and the performers will have a
blast with this piece,” Lawson said.
The story centers on Horace J. Fletcher,
proud owner of the Fletcher American
Cheese Co., who is outraged when Switzerland protests a tariff on imported cheese.
He then convinces the U.S. government
to declare a war, financed by himself and
dubbed “The Horace J. Fletcher Memorial
War.” When his daughter announces her
love for Jim Townsend, a newspaperman
who has publicly criticized both the war and
the quality of milk going into his cheese,
Fletcher drafts Townsend and sends him off
to war – room and board provided by the
Swiss Hotel Owners Association at a modest rate. Pointed and uncompromising, the
show’s inspired lunacy is as relevant today as
when it first opened in 1927.
Open roles are: Horace J. Fletcher, a
“self-made man” and proud of it; Joan
Fletcher, his proud, optimistic and patriotic daughter who sings “The Man I
Love”; C. Edgar Sloane, the sly manager
and older. At the Cesar Chavez
Community Center, 2060 University

Legendary ‘Heart’ at Fantasy Springs
T
he names Ann and Nancy Wilson are
synonymous with the name, “Heart.”
The ladies have a lot of it, and they
should as the founding members of the
hard rock band “Heart.”
The ladies now have a whole new
audience of fans with several of their
songs included in the “Rock Band” video
game. Heart fans young and old can see
Ann and Nancy and the whole band rock
out at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino this
May. Heart appears in the Fantasy Springs
Special Events Center Saturday, May 29 at
8pm. Tickets are $39-$59 and may be purchased in person at the Fantasy Springs Box
Office, via telephone at (800) 827-2946 or
online at www.FantasySpringsResort.com.
Heart hails from Seattle and began
rocking the Pacific Northwest scene in the
early 1970s. They quickly rose to fame
drawing influences from hard rock and
folk music. Some of the band’s early hits
included “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man”
and “Barracuda.” Sisters Ann and Nancy
Wilson went on to record some of the biggest power ballads of the 1980s including
“Alone,” “What About Love?” “Never” and
“These Dreams.”
Nancy Wilson kept busy during the
1990s by writing the scores to her husband,
Cameron Crowe’s, movies. These included
Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart take to the Fantasy staage, May 29.
Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous, Jerry McGuire
and others. Ann Wilson released her first
solo album which included guest vocals by
Elton John, Alison Krauss, Nancy Wilson,
Gretchen Wilson, k d lang, Rufus Wain-
wright and more. Many newer rock bands
cite Heart as one of their major sound
influences, rightly so as Heart was named
number 57 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists
of Hard Rock.” IER

merican singer, songwriter and guitarist
Boz Scaggs started writing music and
singing at the age of 12 and has not
stopped since. Fantasy Springs announces
a special show featuring Scaggs on Tuesday,
June 1 at 8pm. Tickets for this summer kickoff show are $19-$39 and are be available
in person at the Fantasy Springs Box Office,
online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com or
by calling toll free (800) 827-2946.
Boz Scaggs began his music career after
college in the burgeoning rhythm and blues
scene in London, England. He traveled
Europe singing and playing in several bands.
Upon his return, he headed straight for the
psychedelic music scene in San Francisco.
May, 2010 Inland Entertainment Review
That’s where he linked up with Steve Miller
and played on the Steve Miller Band’s first
two albums.
Later in the 1970s, Scaggs released a
self-titled solo album to critical acclaim. In
1976, he linked up with the guys who would
later become the band Toto to record the
smash hit album “Silk Degrees.” The album
reached number two on the U.S. charts and
number one in several countries around the
Snoop Dogg
globe.
He has continued his music success
through the 1980s, 1990s and beyond. In
1988, he opened the San Francisco nightclub
Slim’s. To this day, the club showcases up and
coming music acts. IER

lead vocals for the group that was known

and getting there early is strongly recommended. Rock Yard outdoor concerts are always free

WE THANK OUR SPONSORS:
Riverside Public Utilities, like thousands of other water
providers around the country, spends millions of dollars every
year ensuring that our drinking water meets or surpasses all
state and federal guidelines.
Groundwater is tested multiple times throughout the city’s
water system from the source to the tap, more than 16,000
times each year, to ensure that these high standards are met.
The results of these, and other, tests are reported from the lab
directly to the state Department of Public Health. This data is
then shared with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Riverside Public Utilities also makes this information available to the public through reports that are mailed annually to
consumers and made available online at BlueRiverside.com.
The latest report, for 2009 data collected, will be included
with your bill statement next month.
Groundwater issues are nothing new to the Inland area
or the rest of the country. Fortunately, advances in science
and technology allow us to overcome these challenges and
ensure a safe supply of drinking water for our customers
today, and tomorrow. IER

All-Around Athlete
Whether he’s dribbling the ball past a

Evan has a passion for life that many
find inspiring. But while he was still in
the womb, doctors noticed Evan had a
rare heart defect that would cut his life
short. His parents went to Loma Linda
University Children’s Hospital where
just weeks after he was born, Evan
received a brand new heart. Twenty-five
years ago, our heart team, led by
Dr. Leonard Bailey, became the first
in the world to perform infant heart
transplants. Today, we’re still giving
kids like Evan the chance to live life
