Congratulations to all the new inductees into Saint Mary High School Hall of Fame. As the
principal of the high school, and a former coach and athlete, I can appreciate the dedication and
hard work associated with success in any sport. As a member of the Saint Mary community, I
have witnessed firsthand the importance of this rich tradition. This has certainly contributed to
the exemplary work ethic of our current student athletes that walk the halls of the high school.
Your extraordinary leadership, occasionally under difficult conditions, is the model that the
present generation of athletes follows.

In today’s society, fame takes on many faces and many shapes. Professional athletes and
celebrities do not always exemplify the qualities we value. “Fame is no sure test of merit, but
only a probability of such, it is an accident, not a property of man.”(Carlyle) Positive role models
are precious commodities often missing in our students’ lives. It is this need that validates the
importance of your induction into our Hall of Fame. As you are honored, it is important to reflect
and understand that success is based upon the support of many; the support you received from
your parents and family and the support you received from your teammates. Remember the
wisdom and guidance of the coaches, who spent hours inspiring you to succeed at the highest
level; these were your building blocks.

After the outpouring of goodwill produced at the last Banquet, the Hall of Fame
Committee went back to work on nominating candidates from each decade of the school’s
history. Dozens of hours were spent reviewing articles in the local newspapers detailing
the athletic exploits of the candidates. The actual voting on tonight’s inductees was
preceded by the presentation of written and oral biographies on each of the candidates
nominated by each Decade Group. By subjecting the candidates to this “crucible” of
scrutiny, we believe that we have found an illustrious group of Inductees.

Patrick McNeilly – 1981
Patrick McNeilly – 1981
Patrick McNeilly was a versatile, gifted track performer in the transitional years from the
1970’s to the 1980’s.. After three decades, Patrick still owns the school record of 1:58 in the
800 meters, which effort made him a State Champion in his junior track season. During his
career, our inductee was a man for all races and events, although the 800 meters was his
premier distance. He has happy memories of stunning “come from behind” wins on leans
at the tape in the 4x400 event in a dual meet against Neumann Prep and in the 800 meters
leg of the sprint relay at the Don Bosco relays. When the team really needed him, Patrick
high-jumped, threw the javelin, ran the 1500 meters and even pranced through the mile
walk event. His versatility shone through at the Bergen County Demi-Decathlon, where he
did well in the 100 meters, 1500 meters and high jump, and held his own in the high
hurdles and shot put. Patrick captioned the Gaels track squad in his senior year.

Patrick also has fond memories of cross-country races in the Small Schools Invitational, where St. Mary’s won its first cross
country trophy, and in the Kinny Cross County Championship at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. Patrick also led the crosscountry contingent as captain in his Junior and Senior years.

After St. Mary’s, our inductee has enjoyed a diverse and distinguished educational and work career. Patrick trained to be a
registered pharmacist at Rutgers College of Pharmacy, and received his doctoral degree in medicinal chemistry from the
University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy. Our inductee is a commissioned officer of the U.S. Public Health Service and
has over twenty years of government service and experience. He joined the FDA in May, 2011, and currently serves as
Acting Branch Chief of the Human Subject Protection Branch in the Office of Compliance at FDA’s Center for Drug
Evaluation and Research. He is specifically responsible for overseeing compliance programs related to Institutional Review
Boards and Radioactive Drug Research Committees.

1935 State Championship Basketball Team
1935 State Championship Basketball Team
St. Mary’s 1935 boys basketball team was a group
of excellent athletes coached by an excellent Hall
of Fame coach, Voile Dupes. Their story is a
thrilling, inspirational tale of consistency,
achievement and heroic circumstance. The 1935
hoop squad etched its name in St. Mary’s athletic
history by beating Bayley Ellard to win the Class A
North Jersey Parochial School Championship for
the third year in a row. This impressive win
awarded St. Mary’s permanent possession of that
tournament’s trophy, which is the largest, grandest
trophy ever displayed at St. Mary’s.

A greater achievement lay ahead for this talented team, however, which was led by Hall of Famers, Phil Sheridan, Sr., Pete
McCabe and Buck Smith. In the Catholic Schools State Championship game played at Rutgers University, the Gaels
traded baskets with a talented, physical squad from St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick. In the waning minutes of
the final period, the Gaels’ best player and leader, Phil Sheridan, fouled out. Coach Dupes turned to his senior “sixth
man”, Will Shea, who was known as “Specs” Shea in recognition of the prominent athletic goggles which he wore. In a
thrilling display of guts and determination, “Specs” Shea hit the tying basket to put the game into overtime, and then
scored virtually all the points in the extra period to propel St. Mary’s to a stunning State Championship win. The
performance of “Specs” Shea in the 1935 State Championship game is generally regarded as the greatest performance by
a St. Mary’s athlete in a State Championship game, and is a favorite chapter in St. Mary’s folklore.

Tom Lewis – 1993
Tom Lewis – 1993
Tom Lewis was an outstanding basketball player on the Gaels hoop squad in the early
1990’s. From his center position, our inductee was a ferocious rebounder and defender
who could score from the paint or from the outside. His ability to run the floor also
made him a threat on the fast break. Tom’s strongest athletic attributes were his
consistency and steadiness as a player and team leader.

Midway through his sophomore season, our inductee was called up to the varsity,
worked his way into the starting lineup and received All-League , Second Team
recognition. His sophomore season was highlighted by “buzzer beating” winning
buckets against Park Ridge and Bogota. The Gaels finished that 1990/1991 season with a
20-6 record, the best season since 1975.

point effort in a triumph against arch-nemesis Bogota and 12 points in an upset victory against Paramus Catholic. The
Gaels made their first appearance in the Bergen County Jamboree Tournament since 1977 that year due to our
inductee’s spirited play. In the State Tournament, Tom scored 20 points to lead the Gaels past St. Mary’s of Jersey City
and poured in 15 more in a close loss to Roselle Catholic to end the season. Tom achieved All-League, First Team and
All-County Honorable Mention recognition for his junior exploits.

Division III All-American. Tom currently is a Police Detective for the Borough of Rutherford, where he resides with
his wife Corrie and their three daughters.

Le’Var Starr was a brilliant, multi-talented three sport athlete for St. Mary’s in the early
years of the new millennium. Our inductee garnered nine varsity letters at St. Mary’s
while participating in football, basketball and track. While Le’Var started for three years
in basketball for the Gaels and ran sprints and long-jumped for the track team, it was in

1990 State Sectional
Championship Softball Team
The 1990 Gaels softball team is remembered as a
determined group of girls who used their underdog
status to engineer one of the most unforgettable
comebacks in school history. Truly a Cinderella story, the
Lady Gaels turned a mediocre start into a championship
season. After completion of the first half of their season,
the squad was staring at a 5-8 record and needed three
wins to qualify for the state tournament. This challenge
sparked a fire in the girls and they peaked at the right
time, using their heavy bats and excellent bunting to scrap for runs each game. Not only did the Lady Gaels win the next
three games, but they turned those wins into an 11-game streak – a school record at that time. The journey through the
sectional finals exemplified this Hall of Fame team’s perseverance. Unaffected by their ninth seeding, the Lady Gaels
took on the team’s top-ranked teams that year, serving losses to number 1 seeded Holy Family, number 4 seeded BayleyEllard and number 2 seeded DePaul to seal the state sectional championship. This dazzling rise to the top was fueled by
an astounding team effort under the the master minds of coaches Frank Venezia and Jim MacDonald, a superb pitching
duo who complemented each other very well, ferocity behind the plate and an unstoppable infield/outfield combination
which gave up only two runs through its last seven games. The determination and resilience of the 1990 Girl’s Softball
Team rescued itself from the brink of failure and delivered an emotional first State Sectional Championship to the Lady
Gaels’ storied history.

50th Anniversary: 1961 State Championship Football Team
St. Mary’s 1961 football team won the State Championship fifty years ago, and is awarded a Special Recognition award
on the golden anniversary of that singular achievement. The team was a rushing juggernaut, powered by a split-T
option offense conceived by Hall of Fame Coach Nick Cutro. Considered by many St. Mary’s insiders as the finest
rushing team in school history, the 1961 Gaels gained 2824 years rushing in nine games, including 400 yards each in
wins over Matawan and Bayley Ellard. The defense was led by First-Team All-State noseguard and Hall of Famer, Joe
Fratangelo, and held opponents to an average of eight points per game while shutting out three teams.
