Myth Busters Exhibit On November 12, Coy Elementary 4th graders went on a field trip to the Imagination Station to see the MythBusters exhibit. While in this special exhibit, the students were able to use the scientific method to test out some of the myths using hands-on experiments, some of which included seeing whether we get wetter walking or running through the rain, whether buttered bread lands butter side up or down, or which type of materials helps to build a structure that isn’t knocked down by the wind. The field trip was courtesy of the Adopt-a-School program, and was sponsored by BP. Students left to right are: Hunter Yates, Elijah Gareau, Jaxson Brasiola, and Aidan Schroeder. Volume 15 Number 2 – February 2016 Superintendent's Message OCS Balance Change And Traditions As 2016 is upon us, OCS continues to implement foundational changes and to improvements, even as we better prepare our students for their future and Hal D. Gregory the future of our Superintendent district. Some of these changes include: the implementation of standards-based grading in the elementary schools, new textbook and materials adoptions, new robotics clubs at all levels, changing from standard lighting to LED lighting inside and outside of our facilities, updating our school camera systems, and planning for improved athletic facilities. Standards-based grading (SBG) is truly a new form of grading from the way previous generations of students have been graded in schools. However, we believe this system will better prepare our students for college and careers by providing a very clear understanding of what skills/standards each individual student has mastered. This current year, we are implementing SBG in grades K-2. Additional grade levels will implement SBG in coming years. This system will look and feel different, but it is time for OCS to make this change. Last year, OCS adopted and purchased new math materials in grades K-12. These materials were purchased through permanent improvement (PI) funds provided by our community. Thank you community! Your investment is paying off. We began the purchase of English/Language Arts materials this year, and will complete the assessment and purchase of materials in the coming months. Social Studies and Science materials will also be updated in the coming years. Our students deserve current and appropriate learning materials. I want to announce that OCS will be implementing new “Robotics” after school clubs this spring with students in each building. Through the generous donations from BP/ Husky in Oregon, our district is able to fund advisors and materials to begin this STEM initiative using Lego robotics. Students will learn about STEM concepts and will participate in competition activities in the future. Thank you to BP/Husky! Energy efficiency is always a priority. OCS is currently changing out old lighting fixtures and replac- ing them with LED fixtures and lighting throughout the district. Each light we change to LED saves the district about 66% of what traditional lighting costs. This change is just the right thing to do. In an effort to continue keeping our students and staff safe, we have upgraded our camera infrastructure, and we are replacing old broken cameras. These cameras are monitored each and every day by our administrative staff and School Resource Officers. Safety is always a priority. Finally, we are in the process of working with district leaders, local leaders, and community partners to plan and to fund sports facility upgrades. OCS sports facilities are in need of some major renovations, specifically our stadium infrastructure, track, and gymnasiums. Our student-athletes deserve quality facilities and, through the generosity of our community, we hope to see progress toward these renovations. With all of these changes in motion, OCS is committed to keeping the meaningful traditions and programs in place for all students, young and old. The rich history of Clay and of all schools is important and valued. Happy New Year from OCS! Veteran’s Day Tribute Veteran’s Day has always been special for Coy Elementary for many reasons. Every year, the 4th grade class participates in a moving ceremony honoring veterans of every branch of the Armed Service. Coy’s own Mr. Chuck Wine is a marine and veteran, and proudly wears his dress uniform during the tribute. Mr. Wine became a teacher after he retired from the Marine service, and Coy school is lucky to have such a passionate and dedicated individual on their staff. Principal Amy Molnar’s father is also part of the Marine service, and so this day holds a special place in her heart. Every year, she spearheads the ceremony which culminates in a reception for the many veterans who attend. Coy students are asked to invite veterans from their families to be recognized during the ceremony, and this year there was an impressive turn out. After the colors were posted by members of the American Legion, the 4th grade class sang the “Star Spangled Banner,” led by music teacher Mrs. Deb Hall. The audience then observed a moment of silence, after which the music continued with a medley of patriotic songs. Students shared “letters to their veteran” with the audience followed by presentation of pins to the veterans. Other highlights included readings of “What is a Veteran”, “The Meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance” and a “Tribute to the Flag”. The ceremony ended with the 4th grade class singing a rousing version of “God Bless the USA.” We at Coy will always be grateful to our veterans and active service members for their sacrifices in maintaining the freedom this country so often takes for granted. Students share their letters to veterans. 2 The Best Works Ten Fassett students were selected to have their art published in a nationwide art contest. This is a great honor because there are thousands of entries from all fifty states, and only the best works are chosen to be published in the “Celebrating Art” Anthology. Pictured: Ally Finch, Lauren Clark, Katie Ulinski, Laney Mohan, Roger Henneman, Bella Malbry, Scoot Woollard, Elizabeth Jenkins, Kalie Lewis and Hope Baumgartner (not pictured). Annual Cookie Walk Thank you to everyone who came to The Fourth Annual Cookie Walk at Clay High School and supported the Volunteer Focus students. You helped to make this a huge success. The students from Volunteer Focus worked hard in baking over 30 different kinds of cookies. Participants left with box(es) of assorted homemade Christmas cookies for the holidays and never had to dirty their kitchens! The money raised was used to fund scholarships and charities of the students’ choices. We are planning to host the Cookie Walk again next year and hope to see you there! The students from Volunteer Focus worked hard in baking over 30 different kinds of cookies. Make sure to check out the honor rolls on pages 10 - 11 Spelling Bee Forty-one seventh and eighth graders competed in the Fassett Junior High School Spelling Bee on December 18. The students were well prepared, and the competition was exciting. Would you know how to spell “hoity-toity” or “cartouches”? There was a three-way tie for second place among eighth grader Jayden Cash, seventh grader Spencer Smith, and seventh grader Katelynn Takacs. Our Fassett Junior High Spelling Bee Champion is seventh grader Andrew Kessler. All four of these students will represent Fassett at the Lucas County Spelling Bee, to be held at Maumee Indoor Theater on February 16 at 7:00. The staff and students are very proud of all of the Spelling Bee participants. FFA Takes First This past December, Oregon Clay FFA members traveled to Penta Career Center to participate in the District One Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event Contest. The team was asked to identify deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, annuals, turf, perennials, equipment and more. The team also participated in a design exercise, and demonstrated how to read a seed label and material safety data sheet (MSDS). The team placed first in the district, and team members included Kyle Myrice (2nd place individual), Max Venia (3rd place individual), Samantha Siefke (5th place), Greg Faneuff (7th place), Sam Vincent (10th place), Paige McNutt (19th place), Lily Czop, and Mason Larue. The team will travel to Columbus in January to participate in the state contest. Pictured are the top four individuals on Clay’s Nursery and Landscape team: Greg Faneuff, Samantha Siefke, Kyle Myrice and Max Venia. Holiday Happenings The student body at Coy Elementary had a whole sleigh full of activities during the month of December! They started the month with a week of celebrating famed author Charles Shultz, the Peanuts gang, and 50 years of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Children participated in a Peanuts-themed bingo game during daily announcements, learned fun facts about the Peanuts gang, watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and entered submissions in a Decorate Snoopy’s Doghouse Coloring Contest. The week ended with students dressing in their favorite Peanuts character or Charlie Brown striped shirt. On December 10, grades two and four presented their holiday music program. Toes were tapping to the strains of “Jingle Bells” and other traditional favorites, including a carol sung completely in Spanish. Coy music teacher, Ms. Evans, produced a wonderful concert that put parents and family members in the spirit of the season. On December 16 and 17, students had a chance to do some holiday shopping at the annual Santa-Shop. The gymnasium was filled to the rafters with local crafters and vendors offering wares of all prices and varieties to suit every taste and budget. Children and their families were invited to browse the Santa Shop. The Coy Parents Group ensured that every child at Coy had the opportu- nity to shop at the event and to buy a gift for someone special in their life by giving each student a coupon to purchase an item. In conjunction with the theme of the season, Coy School donned their ugly Christmas sweaters for their shopping. Tinsel, lights, and awkward penguins were seen parading across the front of shirts all through the school. The last day of school before winter holiday, the whole population of Coy joined together in the gymnasium for the 7th Annual Coy Christmas Sing-a-Long. Wearing matching Santa beards with whistling lips, students and staff spiritedly sang along with two of Santa’s elves (Mr. Wine and Mrs. Mic). Then they jingled all the way home! Shopping on ugly sweaters day. The winners of the Peanuts Cloloring Contest. Christmas sing-a-ling. CHS Bids Farewell To Longtime Registrar Longtime CHS registrar, Diane Deem, retired on December 31 after 37 years of service. The “Eagle Family” would like to wish Diane a happy retirement. 3 The Great Escape , 5, 2016 8:00 .. – 1:00 .. : WE NEED YOUR HELP! WE NEED YOUR HELP! You may drop off your items on Friday, March 4th from 4:00 pm til 8:00 pm at the Clay Cafeteria. Items will not be accepted at any other time. Buddy Bucks Did you know that Down Syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition? One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down Syndrome – about 6,000 each year. People born with Down Syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions, such as congenital heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems, Alzheimer’s disease, childhood leukemia, and thyroid conditions. Mr. Larry Folley is a math teacher at Clay High School. His youngest son, Thomas, is 5 years old and has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Mr. Folley and his wife, Christine, are very active with the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo (DSAGT); Mrs. Folley is now Vice President of the DSAGT Board of Directors. The student members of Volunteer Focus wanted to be able to give the whole student body an opportunity to show Mr. Folley that they support him and his family. Therefore, they started a fundraiser they called “Buddy Bucks” to benefit DSAGT. Each classroom collected donations; the classroom that led in donations for the day had a large “Buddy Buck” sign hung on its door, which proudly displayed a picture of Thomas. The Buddy Buck changed daily, based on the classroom in the lead for that day. In addition, short facts and information about Down Syndrome were given to the student body during the morning announcements, and the classroom that collected the most donations won a donut and juice party. The Clay High School community raised $1,000, which will be presented to the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo, in honor of the Folley family, during half time of the varsity boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, January 19. Please plan to attend to show your support for all those diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Thank you to all who generously donated and for supporting another member of our “Eagle” family. The Oregon Fire & Rescue Department, Jerusalem Township Fire Department, and our respective fire prevention bureaus offer our heartiest congratulations to Principal Amy Molnar, and the staff and students of Coy Elementary for their winning of the 2015 Oregon/Jerusalem Great Escape campaign. Coy Elementary had 91% of their students turn in their escape plans. For the 7th consecutive year, Coy Elementary was awarded the $500 prize! We want to thank the principals, staffs, and students from Starr Elementary, Jerusalem Elementary, and Kateri schools which also participated in this worthwhile fire safety education program. In addition, we also want to thank the parents and families of the students for helping us with our endeavor to promote fire safety. Learning Many New Things Pictured are the 2015 Great Escape winners. Mrs. Wurm’s 5th and 6th grade students at Eisenhower are working hard to learn many new things. We have been busy learning about plants, multiplying, comparing fractions, learning how to work together as a team, and so much more. We love to get up and get moving by using fun, SmartBoard lessons and creating visual aids to help us learn! Roe Pulls It Off Fifth and Sixth Grade students with their completed science project. Jane Sprouse working on her science project. Faith Steffen is creating a picture to help her compare her fraction problems. Alex Roe Comes in 1st. Alex Roe won the Clay High Stock Challenge for first semester. He finished with a 38.6% gain. Hunter McNutt was the second place investor. One-hundredforty-three juniors and seniors were given $10,000 to start the simulation, and more than half made money. Alex came from last place to win by selling off all his stock and buying Solar City at $40, and watching it rise to $53 in one day. Alex said “I had watched a movie on the company and did research and felt like I needed to take a risk and it paid off.” Mr. Dunbar, who manages the simulation, finished 94th, and was unavailable for comment. 4 Mindfulness Meets The Classroom As part of the gifted social and emotional curriculum, sixth grade students in Miss Stanton’s classe, at Eisenhower Intermediate have been learning about mindfulness as a way to offer stress relief. Mindfulness can be best described as focusing on the present moment, but also being aware of how our feelings, thoughts, and emotions impact us. In addition to the daily brain breaks started early in the fifth grade curriculum, sixth graders learn many techniques to reduce anxiety and to calm nerves in the hopes that one or more may be beneficial. Students experience laughter yoga, breathing exercises, meditation activities, and the coloring of mandalas (geometric patterns).. Jackie Stanton holds up the coloring book that inspired her to create the "Mandala of the Month" extension activity in her classroom. Madison Roy, the local artist who created the book, started out by drawing designs for friends. Kendal Rivera and Grace Dalton demonstrate laughter yoga. Pickles, Peppers And Paprika Nick Abbott and Will Horvath pose during a brain break. Students proudly show off their most recent mandala designs. On Monday, December 14, Starr Elementary started it’s Right to Read Week with author visits from Nick Rokicki and Joseph Kelley, who are the authors of Pete the Popcorn books, along with 12 other books. The authors read one of their books to each grade level and then shared what inspired them to write the book. Mr. Rokicki and Mr. Kelley also discussed the writing process, working with the illustrator, and the message in the story. They introduced their new book, Pete the Popcorn: Pickles, Peppers and Paprikas, which is based on Tony Packo’s Restaurant. What a great experience for our students and teachers! Nick Rokicki and Joseph Kelley visit Starr for Right to Read week. 5 The Soaring Times It’s A Fall Festival! The weather was perfect for a fall hayride on October 30, and Coy Elementary took full advantage of it! Students enjoyed Coy’s yearly Fall Festival- the school’s alternative celebration of Halloween and all the splendors of the season. With the help of parent volunteers, the children participated in the Pumpkin Run, Harvest Bingo, Mrs. Findsen’s Hayride, and a rousing sing-along. Class parties ran throughout the day and everyone had a great time celebrating Autumn. Thanks go out to everyone who helped make the day a success. The Soaring Times staff. Last year, at Eisenhower, we started a new afterschool program. It’s a newspaper called the “Soaring Times.” This is a student-implemented paper. There are a variety of articles in the paper including cartoon characters, interviews, crossword puzzles, and Eisenhower’s current events. “Soaring Times” staff member develop their own interview questions, set up the interview, and types their own article. In addition, they take their own photographs to go along with their articles. The staff members meet twice a month, but much of the work has to be done on their own time to meet deadlines. The staff is also responsible for selling the papers during lunch twice a month and for creating announcements to publicize the upcoming sale dates. At our next meeting, Mrs. Filar, our district technology integration specialist, will be here to assist with teaching the staff to enter their articles directly into a newspaper program. This year’s “Soaring Times” staff includes: Jennifer Brown, Haley Cannon, Lacy Cascadden, Savanna Large, Lauren LaRue. Carleigh Maville, Derek Pfeiffer, Hannah Schultz, Keanna Snyder, Kayleigh Splichal, Deighton Wamer, and Jackson Whitten. Tradition - Family - Community STEM On Friday, November 6, thirty Fassett girls, along with Mrs. Pevets, Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Claydon, attended the 31st Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). The opening speakers were Emily Calandrelli, an alumna of West Virginia University and MIT. Emily There is nothing like a hay ride. has her own show known as “The Space Gal” on Hulu and YouTube. Dr. Mazey, BGSU president, also addressed the girls. They then attended different STEM activities and labs, ate lunch, and at COSI, did a final presentation. Frieda the Falcon was also present. Students competing in the Pumpkin Run. Pictured are the STEM participants. Relevency This Fall, Oregon City Schools launched their Course Relevancy program, with collaborative efforts from the Oregon Schools Foundation. This program provides the opportunity for students to be engaged in a learning environment that connects real-life relevancy to classroom curriculum and learning. Alumni and community members with career experiences to offer and share are partnered with interested teachers to highlight an area of the curriculum that can be enhanced by the added component of relevancy. The teacher and career expert work together to gather resources to plan, deliver and evaluate the relevancy experiences for students, utilizing in-person or other technology-based communication sharing processes. Three teachers at Fassett Junior High School have volunteered to take part in this pilot program. Here is what they shared about their experiences. Mrs. Leigh Ann Kesling said that Marty VanScoy and Jim Stewart have been working with the 8th grade GT students during STRIDE for character development. She shared some of their experiences in a previous issue of the Oracle. Brent Combs, Fassett 8th grade financial literacy teacher, said, “The Oregon City Schools Course Relevancy program has brought a new dimension to my 8th grade Financial Literacy classes. This pro- gram has put me in contact with professionals across the country. The first semester, my students were able to have Ms. Jennifer Compton, from Sun Federal Credit Union (SFCU), come in on several occasions to discuss topics from banking basics and services to learning how to properly use a credit card. Ms. Compton, along with SFCU, was able to donate classroom materials for my students to use. During the length of the semester, students participate in a real life simulation of balancing a checkbook, depositing paychecks and paying bills. SFCU donated replica checkbooks and registers for students to use, a great resource to learn a real life skill and to be better prepared for their futures. Also, through this program, I have been able to collaborate with Dr. Shawn Tennant from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, who has supplied me with course materials that she uses with her college-age students. The materials are centered on financial competency, and cover the basics that students need to know, from paycheck deductions to credit scores, to buying a house. Having this program available in the district has opened up new doors for me as a teacher, and new and engaging experiences for our students. I am excited to see what else I can bring to our students.” Judy Olive, Fassett 7th grade health instructor, said, “The Course Relevancy Program allowed me the opportunity to connect with two dedicated professionals from various health-related fields: Regina Reynolds (LPN) and Heidi Hess (retired fire chief/paramedic of Springfield Township). Together, they spent two days sharing their training and procedures with our 7th grade health students at Fassett. They demonstrated how they treat victims of accidents who may have injuries involving broken bones, spinal cord, neck, or back injuries. Our students enjoyed hands-on involvement immobilizing potentially broken bones and using a body-board to help stabilize patients during triage. These activities reinforced classroom lessons that were taught on protecting and caring for the skeletal and central nervous systems. They also shared their career experiences in the medical field and discussed the numerous highdemand job opportunities available in today’s growing job market. It is this type of program that engages kids and involves them in real-life experiences that they may not be exposed to otherwise. I’m excited to be involved with community members who take an active interest in our students through their volunteer actions, and enhance the learning opportunities of our Oregon youth.” Got Floss? In December, students from Clay High School’s Medical Technology program visited Mrs. Marquette’s third grade class at Coy Elementary. The Clay students gave the class a lesson in dental hygiene. This presentation helped prepare the Clay students for an upcoming H.O.S.A. competition. What made this lesson extra special was the fact that two of the Clay students were former students of Mrs. Marquette’s! Former Coy students, Grant Saunders and Hannah Bundy. 6 Pay It Forward Clay High School Limelighters ©Disney Production Of Music by Alan Menkenn Lyrics by ce Howard Ashman & Tim Rice The annual “Coy’s Got Talent Show” produces more than singers, dancers and actors. This year, it produced philanthropists and demonstrated the truly caring and thoughtful actions of some of the young people of our school district. Every year, the student body of Coy Elementary votes on the winners of the annual talent show, and the top three acts receive cash prizes. Instead of splitting the cash, this year’s first and third place winners decided to show the true meaning of Christmas by using their money to buy gifts for members of the Oregon community who needed a little assistance during the Christmas season. The first place winners, “Zero Gravity,” received $100 and used it to buy gifts for a local family. (And it will warm your heart to know that these boys won first place two consecutive years prior and used those winnings to donate toys to 13abc’s “Hope for the Holidays” toy drive.) The third place winners, cheerleading team “The Hot Shots,” used their winnings to buy toys for the Oregon Toy Drive. The “Coy’s Got Talent Show” also collected 293 canned goods which were donated to the local food bank. Looks like Coy’s got talent and HEART! Taking Brain Breaks Walking down the hallway of Room #201 at Eisenhower Intermediate, the sounds of students singing could be heard on a rainy Friday afternoon. “My hands are high, my feet are low…and this is how we Pop See Ko,” students in Miss Stanton’s class say as they dance along to a video projected on the front screen. The fifth graders were taking part in a brain break, a research-based program, in between their doubleblock gifted and talented language arts class. Miss Stanton is using videos from the free website, GoNoodle. Her classes choose a virtual mascot, which grows as the class earns minutes needed to advance to the next level. “I’m a huge fan and have used GoNoodle nearly every day since discovering it two years ago,” Miss Stanton said. “I absolutely love how it allows me to calm, re-energize, or focus my students depending on what we are transitioning into next. Plus, it has become such a routine that if I forget, the kids usually ask me for it!” 5th Grade Collage GoNoodle.com can be used in the classroom and at home. To get started, create your free account, so you can begin exploring and enjoying it right away. If your children are anything like the students pictured here, soon they will be begging for more. So…on your mark . . . get set GoNoodle! New Lights For Clay’s Auditorium Stage What’s old is new again. The very lightly used stage lighting fixtures and circuitry equipment at the Wynn Learning Center were recently repurposed to upgrade a desperately needed stage lighting system in Clay High School’s auditorium. Thom Sneed, Clay’s Choral as well as Musical Director, was formulating a plan whereby the Limelighter’s Booster Group would, in phases, pay for the replacement of the out-ofdate lighting at Clay, including the upgrade of the electrical service to that area. During the discussion and further investigation, Mr. Sneed and Mr. Sandwisch, Director of Business Affairs, discovered this perfect fit, which allowed the three-year plan to be accomplished in one year. “This repurposing of existing equipment saved the OCS district over $20,000 in labor and materials, and has significantly improved the lighting system in the auditorium,” Mr. Sneed said. “The ability to use our in-house maintenance staff and electrician not only saved on expenses, but also greatly expedited the entire project.” In addition to the equipment being available in-house, the maintenance department staff moved and installed all of the equipment in time for the fabulous presentation of It’s a Wonderful Life as well as the BP Holiday Concert and the annual Vespers Concert. With this successful project under their belt, Mr. Sneed and Mr. Sandwisch are exploring another “WOW” project in which the Limelighters may want to re-direct their resources . . . stay tuned! 7 Look At Me Starr Elementary third graders were very fortunate to have Mrs. Pat Shafer, retired Starr fourth grade teacher, give an art lesson on how to create a self-portrait. Mrs. Shafer took the students stepby-step through the process, beginning with a pencil sketch of the facial features, adding hair and clothing, outlining in marker and then coloring and mounting their finished portraits. Students were very attentive and loved every minute of the lessons! As a culminating activity, students created word clouds using adjectives to describe their character traits. Pictured: Mrs. Pat Shafer, students Alexa Dupler and Ayden Vondran (Mrs. Shafer’s grandson). Trunk Or Treat Rock And Roll Left to right: Grant Bruns, Clinton Dupler, Ethan Spears, Dylan Yeager, Dominic Maletich and Zach Woollard. The seventh grade GT students and several parents traveled to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Students attended a class entitled “Rock the Power” in which they learned how music has both influenced and reflected societal events in American history. In addition, students had the opportunity to tour the museum. As students study the historical fiction novel, Witness, by Karen Hesse, they are discovering the impact of the Jazz Age on everyday people. Students will continue this study of the arts as they read Matched later this year. The eighth grade GT students are reading memoirs this year, including Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam, Jr. This memoir, set in the 1950s, tells the story of a group of young men who grew up in a dying coal town in West Virginia. Though their futures seemed to be set in stone as coal miners, they overcame the limitations others placed on them and created rockets to win the state science fair and scholarships to college. Larry Kesling of CSX Toledo Docks visited class to both share his experience in the coal industry as a longshoreman at the coal docks and the effects that the coal industry has on our home town. Students then presented their findings in research reports. Halloween is a great time for any community to come together and have a little fun! The Coy PGA hosted a “Trunk or Treat” again this year. “Trunk or Treat” is an opportunity for Coy students to come out and show off their Halloween costumes during a safe, fun trick or treat type activity. Coy’s parking lot was lined with cars for students to trick or treat from, and there was even a special busload of witches in attendance! It was a fun-filled family event for all. Students and parents posed outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum before class. www.oregoncityschools.org 8 We All Live In A Watershed In October, Coy Elementary teamed up with the City of Oregon, Toledo Metropolitan Area of Governments, the Lucas County Health Department, and the Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District to host a family science night. The event was funded by an Ohio Department of Natural Resources Coastal Management Assistance Grant with the purpose of providing a comprehensive educational campaign for residents in the Wolf Creek Watershed regarding water quality. Students and their families had the chance to learn about the world of water science. There were several hands-on (and slightly wet) stations and each had a take home activity. The educational fun included stations on “stream quality monitoring,” the “Enviroscape,” and a “watershed in a bag.” The evening ended with a raffle of mini-science themed gadgets. Thank you to all the presenters, participants, and teachers who attended. Civil War Students Present In A Real World Setting Eight Clay students in Mr. Klosterman’s American Civil War Class presented their class projects to the Greater Toledo Civil War Round Table on Thursday, December 10. Presentations were held at the East Toledo Senior Center. The students, and what they presented were: Gabe Kovach, Ken Burns Civil War; Audras Neverauskas, Medicine in the Civil War; Abby Filka, Elizabeth Van Lew; Mr. Klosterman, Ben Andrus, Shiloh Retreat: A Stop Motion Video; Mason Schroeder, Drummer Boys in the Civil War; Caitlin O Shea, Horses in the Civil War; Cheyenne Petipas, Ghosts of Gettysburg; and Kennedy Sattler, Spying in the Civil War. Mr. Klosterman said of the students, “It takes a little courage for a teenager to present subject matter to experts in a real world situation and then field questions from them. I really want to commend them for challenging themselves.” Congratulations, Civil War students. Back row: Gabe Kovach, Audras Neverauskas, Abby Filka, Elizabeth Van Lew, Mr. Klosterman, Ben Andrus, and Mason Schroeder. Front Row: Caitlin O'Shea, Cheyenne Petipas, and Kennedy Sattler. Giving Back One of several activity stations. Over 2400 canned food items and 157 toys were donated. Snow Much Fun Starr Elementary celebrated Right to Read week, December 14-18. The theme was “Reading is Snow Much Fun!” During the week, students made snowmen, wore pjs, wore “right fit” gloves, and had a White Out day. The final day of right to read week, students who reached their AR goal for December were able to wear Santa hats. The first graders and fourth graders took turns reading books to each other. Students in both classes agreed it was something they would like to do again. Mrs. Howard's first grade and Mrs. Zatko's fourth grade read together. The Volunteer Focus Group and Integrated Machining classes would like to thank the entire Clay Family, including students, parents, and staff, for your generosity and kindness with the toy drive and canned food drive. With your generosity, we were able to help provide meals for needy families in Oregon and Jerusalem Township, as well as help make Christmas special for many youngsters with toys and other presents. Over 2400 canned food items and 157 toys were donated. The results of your efforts greatly brightened Christmas for these families. Mrs. Soncrant, Scott McGorty speaking to Carmela Elmer's 4th grade class. Scott McGorty, a Toledo native, visited Starr Elementary recently. Scott spoke to a couple of different classes, including the Melody Makers’ choir and Mrs. Elmer’s 4th grade class. He spoke about his experience working on National Touring Broadway productions such as Wicked, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins and more. Mr. McGorty also spoke about his experience working for Mrs. Walendzak, the advisors of Volunteer Focus, and Mr. Spallino, Integrated Machining teacher, are very proud of the efforts, generosity, and kindness of everyone involved. The experience of assisting those in need is heartwarming, and we are very lucky to be a part of this great group of students. Scott McGorty Disney Theatricals including working on Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Aladdin. Scott closed by talking about now coming back to the area and working as a Theme Night consultant for the Toledo Mud Hens and the Toledo Walleye. He also offered the Starr Elementary choir (Melody Makers) the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the upcoming Toledo Walleye game on January 22. 9 Toys, Toys, Toys Each year the Integrated Machining class assists the members of the Oregon Christmas Basket program by collecting, transporting, and sorting the canned goods and other food items for the Oregon/Jerusalem Township families receiving Christmas baskets. This year, Volunteer Focus had the opportunity to assist with the sorting of the donated toys. Seven Volunteer Focus members, along with advisors Mrs. Soncrant and Mrs. Walendzak, helped with the process of sorting toys and filling the baskets for each family with age appropriate toys. “It was great to see the process and the end result. We were overwhelmed with how many toys that were donated from within our community. Our Volunteer Focus students each worked hand in hand with a member of the Oregon Christmas Basket program to separate and select “the perfect” toys for each child. It was a very rewarding day. We were able to provide assistance and to help make Christmas great for other families,” said advisor, Mrs. Walendzak. Volunteers sort toys. Toys are bagged for distribution. Towering Heights Twenty gifted and talented students from Clay who are interested in engineering as a career, traveled to the University of Toledo as part of a program called “Meeting of the Minds.” These students were given a tour of the Engineering Department, and explored all the different types of engineering careers, and heard from an admissions counselor about the requirements needed to accomplish their goals. After lunch, the students broke into teams with Findlay High School students, and were given a task to build the tallest structure that would hold a softball for 20 seconds, using the materials provided like straws, toothpicks, tape, etc. The winning team included Jeff Fouke Jr., and Sarah Finger from Clay. The War Is On! Once again, Coy Elementary students participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Penny War. Buckets were placed in each classroom to collect donations for Cystic Fibrosis. The goal of a Penny War is to collect as many PENNIES as possible in each classroom bucket, and to put as many NON-PENNIES in everyone else’s bucket. Pennies represented positive points while the other coins and bills represented negative points, meaning you could sabotage another classroom by placing a dollar in their bucket! The Penny War is spearheaded by Coy school nurse, Sue Ward-Ziegler, and this year, $1,153.00 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Mrs. Coy’s class came in first place, Mrs. McGrady’s class came in second place, and Mrs. Marquette’s class came in third place for having the highest totals. The students in Mrs. Coy’s first place class were the happy recipients of a pizza party. The winning team consisted of Jeff Fouke, Sarah Finger, and a Findlay student. Clay students Emil Pacheco and Kayla Dickerson work on structures. Pictured on left, students in Mrs. Coy's class; Above is Mrs. Ward-Zigler. Penguins Discovered Starr Elementary third graders discovered there are many different kinds of penguins and found out how fascinating they are to learn about! Students began their penguin research with a partner and an iPad. Students used QR codes to easily access websites with relevant information about their specific penguin, and filled out a fact sheet with the information they found. Then, using an iPad, students created a Keynote presentation that contained information from their fact sheet, including photographs and animations with 8-10 slides. After students completed their slide show presentations, they made life size illustrations of their penguins. Finally, students finished the project with a multi-paragraph research report. Clay student Emil Pacheco refines his design. The Chosen Few Congratulations to Trinity Watson, Danielle Hentges and Dakota Crick for being chosen by University of Toledo, Lake Erie Center’s 6th annual photo contest. Each young lady received a monetary prize along with recognition during an awards ceremony at the Lake Erie Center in Oregon. Addison Csehi and Cadence Vriezelaar are researching about penguins Emilia Henneman-Dallape writing her research paper on penguins. Noah Mc Kibben stands by his display. The contest winners were: Trinity Watson, Danielle Hentges, Dakota Crick. 10 Oregon City School Honor Roll Clay High 12th Grade Arman, Paige Bachmayer, Brandon Badenhop, Noah Beamer, Tyler Benton,
