We hope you will join the Faith World Vision Team’s Run For Water, an exciting fundraiser for Ethiopia that simply requires you to run or walk a (gasp) half marathon. But, not to fear – there’s support in helping you get ready! Then there is Sacramento’s famous Run to Feed the Hungry – the family friendly 5 and 10K Thanksgiving run or walk that benefits many needy people in our area. There are Thanksgiving runs across the country but at 28,000+ participants, we’re happy to tell you that Sacramento is the largest event in the USA! See Page 5 for the details on both run/walks. And, to warm up, there’s a three mile Walk for Alzheimer’s coming up…See Page 2 for more about this event!

Save the Date! Our neighbor, St. Anthony Parish, is forming a team to participate in the Sacramento Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The three‐mile walk starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 27. All walkers are encouraged to make a donation, and those who raise or donate $100 will receive a T‐shirt. Please be sure to invite your neighbors, roommates, co‐workers and local friends. We are asking members to bring finger foods to share with our guests if you are able to do so. The Open House will be held between the 1st and 2nd services and after the 2nd service on the 14th. There will be music, food, fellowship and information about church programs and the building project on the patio. Family Promise at Faith
One of the local missions supported by Faith Presbyterian Church is Family Promise of Sacramento. This interfaith program helps low income homeless families achieve self‐sufficiency and regain secure housing. Faith PC is one of 16 host congregations in partnership with 10 support congregations in the Sacramento area participating in the Family Promise program. Our congregation provides safe shelter and nourishment to Family Promise guests four times a year. During our host week in August, over 50 Faith volunteers served 5 families of 8 adults and 10 children. One family moved to housing that week and another expects to move soon. The guest families asked us to express their appreciation for the warm welcome, shelter and tasty meals they received during their stay with us. Our prayers are with them. We are grateful to our volunteers and thank you for your time and talent. Every single volunteer plays a key role in this program. There are many opportunities to serve and we welcome you: cook and set up dinner, share in fellowship activities, stay overnight with the families, help transform our classrooms into sleeping quarters, pack up the Family Promise trailer at week’s end or help with linens. History of Presbyterian Women
Presbyterian Women (P.W.) have always had a mission, a voice and a place in the church. P.W.'s predecessor organizations began more than 200 years ago, when women had no role outside the home. In the early 1800's, the first P.W. organization defied societal and church conventions. These courageous, dedicated women faced the biases of men and others who felt women should remain at home. P.W. organizations did gain respect especially that of missionaries in the field, who requested women's prayers and donations. In the mid 1800's with civil strife in the nation the church split. Many years passed before the wounds were healed and the north and south were reunited. Despite regional differences P.W. has always been in the forefront of the national movement. P.W. have advocated for women and children, crusaded for the right to fair paid work for African Americans, Native Americans, people of Appalachia and immigrants. Also, they do something for a host of other societal problems. They work to stamp out hunger, exploitation of women and children, and advocate for equal rights for women in society and the church Fast Forward: In 1983, the two churches were rejoined becoming (PCUSA). Finally, in 1988, P.W. was formed. Two centuries after the first P.W. gathered to pray and give their money to the church, women now have a voice in the church and in the world. P.W. exists today because women are adaptable, determined, proactive charitable, generous and dedicated to God. 2014 09 PresbyNews Page 3 of 15

Faith’s Annual Harvest Dinner and Auction Purpose Statement: The FPC Fellowship Committee is hosting a Dinner & Auction on Sunday, October 5, 2014 to raise Money for the “Pat Tatro Camper‐Ship Fund”. The funds are used to ensure that those who would not normally have the available funds to attend the Faith’s Fall Retreat, the Men and Boy’s Retreat, the Women’s Retreat and the Children’s Camp at Westminster Woods, have an opportunity and a vehicle to participate in one or more of these spiritually enriching Retreats. We will raise monies by conducting an Auction and Drawing through donations from within and outside the Faith community. We will sell Dinner Tickets to faith family and friends. We will engage the Faith Presbyterian Church Congregation to work with the Fellowship Committee on the various activities needed to put on the event. Here is the scoop on the event for this year: Prices for food and Catering services continue to rise and your Fellowship Team decided to lower the price of the meal and utilize our own faith community to serve the meal. We assure you that the event will still be exciting and fun for all! There will be a sign‐up for those of you willing to volunteer in the Narthex during September. Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for youth ages 6‐18 and children under 6 are free. Run for Water October 18th Join Faith Church Team World Vision October 18th and run the Folsom Blues Breakout Half Marathon (13.1k)! Team World Vision will prepare our team with training and a coach leading up to the race. You don't have to be an avid runner to participate. In fact, we are hoping that many will make this a new commitment to running and fitness. We are encouraging everyone who has a heart for mission and the people of Abaya to participate. You will receive all the training for the race and the support in fundraising that you will need. Part of the commitment will include raising funds that will go toward W.A.S.H. projects in Ethiopia. Mark your calendar and prepare to run for water for our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia! Is running or walking in the annual Run to Feed the Hungry event how you and your family traditionally kick off your Thanksgiving festivities? Or is joining thousands of others through this run/walk to support the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services something you’ve considered doing but yet to participate? This year Faith Presbyterian will have an official team, and we want you to join us! This year’s run is Thanksgiving morning – Thursday, November 27 – rain or shine. The 10K starts at 8:15 a.m. The 5K follows at 9 a.m. The race starts on J Street, near Sacramento State campus and runs through the beautiful tree lined streets of East Sacramento. Runners and walkers of all experience levels are welcome. The team registration fee is $50 per team member and includes an upgraded technical ¼ zip long‐sleeve shirt, team photo, VIP parking, and access to the team area with coffee and morning snacks. Now in its 21st year, the run began in 1994 with just 796 participants. Final Words on Heaven and the Kingdom of God
This six-week group will explore what it means to live well now in light of God's
kingdom. Vital topics for discussion will include the power of the Trinity in our lives, the
meaning of knowledge, the importance of spiritual disciplines, and much more.
Renowned theologian, Dallas Willard, has written the book and created the DVD series
which will be our guides—as we explore what it will be like to transition into the very
presence of Christ in heaven. Through these videos and book, Dallas Willard explores
what it means to live well now in light of God's kingdom. He reflects on the power of the
Trinity in our lives, the meaning of knowledge, the importance of spiritual disciplines
and much more. Dallas Willard offers poignant thoughts about what it will be like to
transition into the very presence of Christ in heaven. The group study will culminate
with the theme of offering a blessing to one another. Both the book and the DVD are
gifts of grace to anyone seeking to know Christ today. We hope you will join us!

Adult Formation Opportunities this Fall Adult Sunday School (Sunday Mornings, 10:15 – 11am) Mark’s Gospel – as told by Max McLean (September 14, 21, 28, October 5) Two thousand years ago, a drama unfolded that would change the course of history. Many have called it the 'greatest story ever told.' Now one of the great storytellers of our time presents this life‐changing saga in a compelling video version of Mark's Gospel. Max McLean's powerful stage performance takes us inside the story of Jesus so we can experience the events and characters that have inspired and challenged people all over the world. Max McLean's life work is making the Bible come alive for his audiences. Since 1983, he has performed Mark, Acts, and Genesis to millions of people on TV, radio, at theaters, colleges, and houses of worship across the cultural and religious spectrum. Come join us for this video and discussion. Exploring Mark’s Gospel – Going Deeper (October 12 – December 21) The gospels are the stories of Jesus’ life and the meaning of his life in our lives. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the gospels, but some would claim it is the most powerful. In this gospel, we see Jesus the man of action, a suffering servant, a person who calls upon his listeners to follow. It is a story of conflict and a story of hope. It is a story that points us to a new future. We will take our time with the story, seeking to be attuned to what God will teach us about the one we call Lord and Savior and about our own discipleship. Jim Zazzera will lead this class. Wednesday Evening Class Bound for Freedom: The Amazing Philippian Letters of Paul (September 10 ‐ October 8) In AD 61, St. Paul was in chains, and there was never a man freer or more alive! And what he writes from prison can set you free! Wednesday Afternoon Discussion (Monthly) Book Study: Getting to the Heart of Interfaith Getting to the Heart of Interfaith: The Eye‐Opening, Hope‐Filled Friendship of a Pastor, a Rabbi & an Imam (by Ted Falcon Don Mackenzie, and Jamal Rahman) is a deeply personal journey to interfaith collaboration that offers hope for an inclusive and healing way of being together in the world. Too often religion seems to fuel more hatred than love, more conflict than collaboration. Interfaith Talk Radios interfaith amigos — a pastor, a rabbi and an Imam provide a rich understanding of the road to interfaith collaboration by sharing their stories, challenges, and the inner spiritual work necessary to go beyond tolerance to a vital, inclusive spirituality. From their deep commitment and lived experience, they present ways we can work together to transcend the differences that have divided us historically. New Women’s Bible Study
Beginning Monday, September 15
6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
“Breaking Free” is a study from Isaiah, a book about the
captivity of God's children, the faithfulness of God, and the
road to freedom.
This in-depth women's Bible study draws parallels between
the captive Israelites of the Old Testament and the New
Testament believers in Jesus as the Promised Messiah. We
will look at the Book of Isaiah through the lives of the kings who ruled
during the prophet's ministry. These kings exemplify many of the obstacles
to freedom with which we must deal. Using Scripture to help identify
spiritual strongholds in our life, no matter how big or small, Beth Moore
explains that anything that hinders us from the benefits of knowing God is
bondage.
God intends for us to know and believe Him, glorify Him, experience His
peace, and enjoy His presence. Join us on Monday evenings, starting in
September, as we study God’s word to find freedom and deliverance from
personal captivity.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. –John 14:27 There are many factors in the world that divide us. They exist among nations, in our communities, throughout congregations, in the midst of households across the globe, and within ourselves. Because of these divisions, we as God’s children can become broken. In contrast to such brokenness, Paul’s letter to the Ephesians describes peace as a spiritual bonding agent, holding us together through the love of Christ. It restores our fractured pieces to a whole, creating a connection between us. Through this, we experience the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) views peace as a core part of our identity and calling as believers. It is a central declaration of the gospel, calling us to model our lives in the pattern of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. This year we invite you to take part in A Season of Peace, which culminates in the receiving of the Peacemaking Offering, traditionally taken on World Communion Sunday, October 5, 2014. The Peacemaking Offering funds the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program, which brings in international peacemakers, holds conferences, and advocates for nonviolent solutions to conflict. Twenty‐five percent of the offering is retained by our congregation for local peacemaking ministries; 25 percent is used to support presbytery and synod peacemaking efforts; and 50 percent is forwarded to the Peacemaking Program of the Presbyterian Mission Agency so that it can continue to provide assistance and resources for congregations and other bodies of the PCUSA. Please participate in this offering and help make the Season of Peace a time to renew your commitment and reaffirm your calling to peacemaking. Asset‐Based Community Development, It’s As Easy as ABCD By Maria Rodriguez To what do children in Abaya aspire? Looking at this picture of children growing up in Abaya, I see many different expressions and wonder what lies ahead for these children. Do their parents imagine they will grow up to be parents, lawyers, pastors, or comedians? (thoughts I have had for my boys at some point) Are their parents, limited by fear of malnutrition, lack of water, and disease, simply praying their children will survive to adulthood? What are their hopes and aspirations? I’d like to tell you a story of my friend Habtamnesh. I met Habtamnesh on my first visit to Abaya in 2010. She was working as the bookkeeper for the brand new World Vision Area Development Program (ADP) in Abaya, Ethiopia. We met toward the end of our trip and I was nearing a point of emotional exhaustion. (I’d been the only female this first trip. At one point our team was considering what we were missing most from home and I said, “Ice and women.”) Habtamnesh greeted me with a hug that felt like an answer to prayer. That day our team heard a little bit of her personal story. Several things in her life story compelled me to keep her in my thoughts and prayers. On my second trip to Abaya, in 2012, I could not contain my hope in seeing her again. Habtamnesh was still the bookkeeper and she looked strong and healthy, another answer to prayer. Habtamnesh, like most of the Abaya ADP employees, grew up in the vicinity. This is an example of asset‐based community development (ABCD). “When Helping Hurts” – a book considered by our Mission Ministry – defines ABCD and contrasts ABCD to other strategies of development that can result in more harm than good. Here are some ways ABCD is happening in Abaya through the employment of local citizens: 1. Programs are developed and implemented by the people who best know the resources, complications, and potential for their ADP 2. Employees are invested in the success of the ADP…it is their families and friends who benefit from their work 3. Community members directly benefit from employment opportunities 4. Children may look to ADP employees as an example for their future The 2014 Faith Abaya Team carried with them a small token to Habtamnesh from me, a simple scarf I knitted. I doubt she has much use for a scarf in Ethiopia, but that scarf held with it many prayers. She was still working in Abaya and she sent back to me a lovely cloth scarf. Last I heard, through the grapevine that is Facebook, she was working at the World Vision district office in, Hawassa. There are times when I sit and reconsider my monthly sponsorship of two boys in Abaya. It’s not something I take lightly. As I reconsider and rededicate my resources I am always most encouraged by the people I had the opportunity to meet in Abaya. They are real people, doing real work, where every penny makes a real difference in more ways than we can imagine. Maybe one of those faces in that picture up above is thinking, “I want to work for World Vision.” Thanks be to God who is bigger and better than anything we can imagine. 2014 09 PresbyNews Page 12 of 15

Session July Highlights What is Session? Session is the governing body of our congregation. Made up of 17 members (pastors and elders) who are called by God and elected by the congregation, the Session is charged by God to oversee the ministry and mission of Faith Presbyterian Church. By God’s grace, Session works hard to make sure that we are becoming, day by day, the sort of church God wants us to become – a community loving Christ, building disciples, serving all. What has Session been up to lately? The following are some of the decisions which were made this month at Session and some of the areas of ministry which were celebrated. We hope you share in the enthusiasm of Session in all that God is doing in our midst. As a reminder, Session meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. here at church. Unless otherwise determined, they are open meetings and church members are always encouraged to come and listen. We’ll even share our snacks! - APNC Report – John Latimer, chair of our Associate Pastor Nominating Committee, met with Session to bring the good news that the committee had called a candidate to fill this position and that this candidate had accepted the call. Pending Presbytery approval on August 28th, the candidate will be announced to the congregation on Sunday, August 31, join us at the fall retreat, and come to be voted on by the congregation in late September. - Link Hall Financing Options Approved – Session approved using a portion of our operating reserves and a portion of our memorial monies towards the Link Hall Expansion project. At future meetings, and as more information becomes available on the construction, these amounts will be clarified. - Review for Pastor Jeff Chapman – Per our bylaws, Session held an annual review for Jeff this month. At that time there was an opportunity to review how competence has been demonstrated this past year along with areas of potential growth or improvement. From the Deacons’ Desk by Tammi Whitted Here comes the Fall. Vacations may be over, kids back to school and time to start back with routines and schedules. Time to take stock in how we spend our time. Where do we find purpose in our busy lives? Some of us feel weary. What can we do to strengthen our hearts? Denise Griffin, a gifted Women's Ministry leader, once shared with me these encouraging words which I would like to pass on. "Turn down the noise ‐ We are bombarded every day with commercials on TV, the computer, at the gas station and on billboards. Wherever you are, turn down the noise in your life. Name it and lay it at the feet of Jesus every day if you have to. Play worship music as background ‐ in your home, in your car. For one thing, the enemy hates it, but more so it enriches your spirit, mind and heart. One night a week ‐ Give it to God, to joy, to whatever strengthens your heart. Recover what once brought you joy ‐ What was it? Running? Playing an instrument? Reading? Taking walks? Go take it back; joy strengthens the heart. Tell Jesus that you love Him ‐ several times a day. What we are studying this month:
End of Summer
Christian Education Program
During the summer months we will have all
children remain in worship on Communion
Sunday’s (1st Sun. of August and
September) and we will combine the Godly
Play class and the Kairos Quest classes
together the remaining weeks.
This modified schedule allows for
friendships to be forged with all the children
in our children’s programs when our class
sizes are small due to family vacations and
breaks that occur during the summer
months.
