W
ill Smith’s gay role in the film
Six Degrees of Separation (he
reportedly regrets not having
properly done the homo kiss in the
flick) is about to be taken up by rising
star Obi Abili in the play version at
Kevin Spacey’s Old Vic. The Olivier
award-winning play is being performed
in this country for the first time in 18
years and will have you gripped with its
fast-paced and vivacious take on two
worlds colliding. When Ouisa and Flan
Kittredge let an injured young man into
their home in the middle of the night,
they open the door on a new and enticing world. This witty play - inspired
by the real life story of a flamboyant
gay con artist who convinced wealthy
Manhattanites that he was the son
of Sidney Poitier - scratches beneath
the surface of a world obsessed with
money and fame and poses the question: how can anyone be sure that
people are who they say they are?

Gay Underground
R
oll up for a panel discussion in a pub! Doesn’t
sound very enticing until you find out they’ll
be exploring London’s gay underground from
1967 to now. Organiser Bill Brewster told us, ‘The
inspiration for the night is our departed friend
Tallulah whose stories of a time that seemed long
lost gave us the thirst for learning more about everyday gay life in the clubs and bars of the last five
decades.’ Panellists include Patrick Lilley, Steve
Swindells and Gareth Marshall. Patrick has been
involved in club promotion for well over 20 years,
Patrick Lilley
with High On Hope, Queer Nation and, lately,
Work! Steve Swindells was promoter of legendary
clubs like The Lift back in the 80s and Gareth Marshall has DJed in
just about every club of significance since the late ’60s including Rod’s,
Stallions, the Market Tavern and the LA. They’ll be discussing the
significance of Marmite Madge, Tricky Dicky and Selena The Horse as
well as remembering the wonderful Tallulah. If this means anything to
you, then take a trip down memory lane, but if it doesn’t, all the better,
as there’s this mine of gay underground for you to plunder. Music by
Gareth Marshall, Jonny 5, Benoit & Namedrop and Bill Brewster.

S
mart and savvy hom-rom-com Mr Right is out on DVD on 25 January and
we’ve got copies to give away to five lucky readers. Mr Right is a witty and
fresh take on the vibrant London gay scene, starring some of our hottest
home-grown talent, including one-time Hollyoaks hunk Jeremy Edwards. It
follows the lives of gay men of all varieties, including a TV producer, an aspiring
actor, a rugby player, a soap star, an artist and a model. When character Louise
decides to bring her current beau Paul (Edwards), to a dinner party with this
gaggle of gay friends to reassure herself that he is actually straight, disaster ensues and everyone’s sent reeling. With a cast of handsome men and cute boys,
Mr Right merges Hoxton cool, metrosexual and gay style to create a savvy brew
of urban queer cool. • To win one of five DVDs, tell us which MR RIGHT actor played
the role of Kirk Benson in Hollyoaks? Send your answers to

Ke$ha, the Nashville blonde behind the catchy-ass ‘Tik Tok’,
is a tranny-loving, JD-guzzling party girl, whose new album is the
fittingly named Animal. Stuart Brumfitt talked to her about pirate
fantasies, living in a haunted house and breaking into Prince’s house next up is Buckingham Palace to deliver her CD to the Queen.
Apart from G-A-Y, have you played
many gay clubs before?
A few, but not like a bunch. I
want to play them all. I love
trannies and gay people and I like
girls sometimes, so I want to do
everything.
How come you like trannies
so much?
To be totally honest, they make
me want to be a better woman.
I had trannies at my T4 taping
and they’re all in their heels and
dancing their asses off and look
amazing and I thought, ‘I suck.’
So they make you up your game
basically?
I just love their commitment to the
lifestyle: always looking fantastic;
always being fantastic.
Have you got a favourite tranny?
I’m friends with this guy called
Jeffrey Starr. He’s a drag queen
and is fantastic. He has bright
pink hair and big blue eyes. He’s a
musician too. He’s out of control.
Where are you based now?
I don’t know. I live on a bus or in
this hotel right now. I was living
in LA, but then I left because my
house was haunted.
Really?
I know I sound mental.
No, we did a feature on haunted gay
venues for Halloween.
Are you serious? I want to play a
haunted gay venue.
Well you played Heaven and that’s
meant to be haunted.
No shit! My house was a huge
old house from the 70s and is in
Laurel Canyon, and the history of
that place is epic music like The
Birds, Cream and Janis Joplin. All
the old skool. It’s this canyon with
all these crazy trees and you can
just tell that back in the day people used to just sit around and eat
acid. It’s such a beautiful trippy
house. I walked in it and thought,
‘This energy’s amazing.’ You can
just feel the history of it. And right
next door is the house where Jim
Morrison used to live and you can
still see his poetry written in the
walls. So I moved in, and slowly,
every night from about 3.35-4am,
I would have an awful, terrifying
dream about someone killing me
or stabbing me or whatever and
then I would wake up and there
would be some crazy shadow
on the wall, whether it was a
monster or an alien or a ghost. It
was just so scary.
Were you doing loads of drugs?
No, I would be cleaning my
room and fall asleep at midnight and wake up to this.
Did you live there alone?
I lived with room-mates,
06
but I never knew who they were,
so I’d come home and there’d be
some guy there.
Was it some sort of creative
commune?
Exactly, you’d walk in there and
there were just couches and
musical instruments.
Where have you grown up?
I was born in the valley of LA, then
my family moved to Nashville.
Are you more of an LA girl or a
Nashville gal?
Nashville, but I don’t have the
accent. I wish I did. It comes out a
bit when I’m drunk.
What’s Nashville like?
It’s amazing, because everyone
plays instruments and there’s
honky tonk and line-steppin’.
Just a bunch of crazy bumpkins.
In high-school we’d go mudding,
getting into our cars and driving
round in the mud. And playing on
rope swings.
Sounds fun. And it’s very musical?
Yeah it is. And my mum is a
songwriter and she taught me how
to write songs, so I’ve been writing
for as long as I can remember. It
paid off.
Would you live there again?
Yeah, I’d love to move back, but I
love it here in London. I’ve been
having the best time here. I went
to Mahiki and they poured a bottle of champagne into a treasure
chest. It’s amazing! It’s fulfilling
my weird pirate fantasies.
What else have you been up to?
Trouble! Just such trouble! I’m
such a trouble-maker. I got all
paparazzied. They followed me
to the hotel and then we had an
afterparty in my room. Thank god
for my make-up artist. Can you tell
I haven’t slept?
No, not at all. How much have you
slept?
Like three hours.
More than enough! Margaret
Thatcher got by on four hours a
night. You look amazing. How would
you describe your style?
To be honest, I’ve lost most of my
clothing, so I just put on what I
can find. I just think it’s versatile. Whatever I wear I can wear
daytime and night-time, because I
know that whatever I wear, I might
not be coming back for a few
days. So put your phone charger
in your purse, some mascara, a
toothbrush.
Or not even the toothbrush - just
wash your mouth out with...
Jack Daniels!
My kind of girl!
Well you can’t plan your life, so
what you wear should be a reflection of your lifestyle. But I don’t
thursday 14 january 2010
think you should hate on anybody’s
personal style. To each their own. I
often look like shit! Sometimes we
all do. Oh and the walk of shame
in the morning.
How did your song go down in
America? What did they make of a
young girl going on about drinking
tons and partying?
What I’m trying to do is talk the
exact same way that any man, any
rapper, anyone with a penis would.
And when I say it, everyone’s so
shocked because I don’t have a
dick. Total double standards. I
don’t drink and drive, so what’s the
big deal? People do get a bit weird
about it because I’m a girl, but
that’s good.
Have you been compared to anyone?
Well the head of my label said
I was a combination of a young
Madonna and the Beastie Boys,
which I love. There’s a song I have
called ‘Blah Blah Blah’ and it’s
me talking to a guy in the same
way a guy would talk to a girl. It’s
like, ‘You’re talking too much.
Just show me where your dick’s at.
Stop talking! You don’t care what
my middle name is! The pick-up
lines are cheesy! Let’s just get to
the point!’
What guys do you like?
A sense of humour and a beard that’s all it takes.
A beard? Thick or stubbly?
I like every beard. I’ve never met a
beard I didn’t like.
You need to go to one of the gay bear
clubs in London.
Oh my god, that’s my fantasy. But
they’re all gay and they’re not going to want to have sex with me.
There might be some bisexuals
there.
I’m so into it!
Check out the bear scene in America
- it’s there too.
No shit? You’re opening my eyes!
I heard you broke into Prince’s
house - tell us about that.
I didn’t break in - I snuck in.
How did you get in?
I found his address, went there
and there was a gate, so I wedged
my body under the gate, but I
didn’t quite fit, so I said to the
gardener, ‘Pull me through’ and
he was like, ‘No’, and I was like,
‘Please, I’ll give you $5.’ And he
did, so I just walked up the driveway that was lined, by the way, in
purple velvet. And then the door
was unlocked. What would you do?
Walk right in!
Thank you! So I walked right in
and gave him my CD. He was playing guitar. Go fucking figure.
Have you heard from him since?
No.
Do you think he knows the girl who
broke into his house is you?
I don’t know. I wonder if he has
people walking into his house all
the time.
I doubt it. That’s pretty ballsy.
It’s pretty psycho.
Did you hear someone did that to the
Queen once?
No!
Would you break into the Buckingham Palace?
If I wanted to give the Queen my
CD, then maybe.
You’re friends with Katy Perry aren’t
you?
Yeah. I haven’t seen her much, but
we were proper friends. We worked
for a lot of the same people and it’s
hard to find good girlfriends in LA,
because it’s so competitive. Then
she made it and now I am.
Do you think you share a similar
attitude?
A bit. She’s pretty ballsy. We got
along really well.
I bet you got up to some wild stuff
together.
Oh yes we did! There are some
photos from one night of me biting
her stockings.
Tell us some more about the album.
I’m so excited about it because I
just finished it. It’s called Animal.
I wrote it about real things, experiences, people I’ve been in love
with, nights on the town. It’s all
real and I’ve written everything, so
I’m so proud of that. When people
listen to it, I want them to let it
all out like an animal. Come to
my shows and dance and scream
and fuck and fight. Whatever your
animal instinct is and you surpress
in everyday life. I want you raw!
‘Tik Tok’ is a good representation
of the album, but some are a little
weirder and cheekier. I did a song
with 3OH!3, Diddy and Taoi Cruz
too.
And why do you have the dollar sign
in your name?
I was actually just taking the piss
out of the fact that I was so broke
I couldn’t afford a taco. I kid you
not, I had $3 to my name. And
everywhere I went, I heard my
name on the radio. I was on ‘Right
Round’, which was number one
in all these countries. I was even
having to go to this place where
you buy one shot of tequila and
you get free tacos. Great deal!
Me and all my friends would go
there once a day and buy a shot
for the free tacos. So I got a $
sign tattooed where I licked the
salt for the tequila to take the
piss out of how broke I was
having to do this.

SINGLES
Va Va Video
RELEASE OF THE WEEK
Girls Can’t Catch
Echo
Girls Can’t Catch are on thin ice.
Their debut single only reached
26, so we imagine record execs are
watching them closely, ready to flush
‘em at any moment. Thankfully their
new single ‘Echo’ is a strong card
and deserves to make a dent in the
charts. Singing about a man who
isn’t making enough effort, they sing
‘Did you honestly think that this is
all it takes to be my boyfriend?’ until
the chorus bursts into a honking great wall of sound. They wear fingerless gloves in the video, though, which seems like a very bad idea, unless
they’re planning on having a wank without getting cold hands. hhhhh

shouldn’t have bothered. It’s dull as all
hell. Drab rapping, plus whinging
courtesy of Usher. Yawn. hhhhh

Won’t Go Quietly
Every time we’re hauled off by the pigs
for indecent exposure, ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ is our battle cry. Described by their
record label as ‘genre-defying’ (which
roughly translates as ‘dog’s dinner’)
Example’s single is average chunky
electro-dance. Making reference to Batman and Superman, it’s already been
C-Listed on Kiss and Radio 1, which is
another good reason not to listen to it.

Spotlight
Gucci Mane is tipped to be one of the
Ash
Space Shot
You know how most TV dramas in the
UK look like a film student’s £10-budg-
Ash
et waste of time when you compare
them to their US counterparts? Well
that’s how Ash’s ‘Space Shot’ is when
you compare them to The Killers. Not
that it’s a bad song, but the space
rock thing just doesn’t measure up to
the competition. That said, someone
mistook The Killers for Chris De Burgh
the other day, so maybe we should shut
the hell up. hhhhh
So Solid
Since You Went Away
Here in Boyz Towerz we’ve never actually met anyone who likes So Solid. Or
do we mean N-Dubz? Anyway, their
new video for ‘Since You Went Away’ is
dreadful. It’s like X Factor have gone to
a contestant’s bog standard comprehensive school and added some dance
moves. One of them actually raps that
they’re just ‘doing it for the money’,
which is a shame, because this single
probably won't even make a fiver.

Up In The Air
Director: Jason Reitman
Starring: George Clooney, Vera Farmiga
Opening up with a glorious Dallas-style
sequence of aerial views of America
to a kitsch and cool soundtrack, Up In
The Air starts with the great promise
of something worldly, glamorous and
exciting, but ends up being a very
small film about middle management,
with strange business chat and feeble
relationships at its heart.
Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a
man who’s hired to sack people on
behalf of cowardly bosses, and he flies
10
thursday 14 january 2010
around the US to
do it, getting a kick
out of clocking up
Airmiles along the
way. He loves having
no attachments,
no base and all
his belongings in a
small case. Sadly,
this means we’re
subjected to dreadful scenes where
Bingham gives
depressing motivational speeches
about fitting your
life into a backpack
– a career sideline
which we’d rather
not be party to.
Bingham’s
plodding along quite
nicely until a couple
of women come into
his life. Firstly Alex,
a sexy female version of himself. They
both want some nostrings fun, but soon
get drawn in ever closer. Then there’s
Natalie, a jumped-up new graduate
who loves firm handshakes (we find
that creepy in a girl) and wants to cut
costs at Ryan’s company by taking him
and his colleagues out of the air and
making them fire people by webcam.
There are some mediocre adventures when the three of them meet in
some bleak US town, but nothing really
grabs. Clooney is fairly charming although it’s a wonder he agreed to play
such a sad, average character - but it’s
Farmiga who is the smokin’ star of the
show. Well-acted, but it doesn’t raise
even the most basic emotions of joy or
sadness. hhhhh
DVD & BLU RAY
Dorian Gray
Funny People
Director: Oliver Parker
Starring: Ben Barnes, Colin Firth
Director: Judd Apatow
Starring: Judd Apatow, Adam Sandler,
Seth Rogen
Oscar Wilde’s
novel, The
Picture of Dorian Gray, has
already been
cannibalised
into a ballet,
an opera,
multiple films,
and a play. This time Ben Barnes
stars in the titular role, although he is
at least 30% less attractive than the
cad-who-never-ages should be. That
might sound shallow, but a successful Dorian must be irresistible. Alas,
Barnes is not.
As for the story, Dorian comes
to London, has his portrait painted,
and is led down the road to hell by
the sleazy Lord Henry Wotton (Colin
Firth). On the way we enter a Les Misstyle Whitechapel which heaves with
busty whores and Mockneys of illrepute. There Dorian shags hookers,
smokes opium and seduces anyone
with an orifice.
As the years pass, Gray’s behaviour steadily blackens and his morals
evapourate, yet his face never ages.
Instead his portrait rots into a syphilitic mess in his attic. But since only
he knows about that, it’s happy days,
no? Well no, actually, but that would
give away the ending. Not that you’ll
get that far because since this film
isn’t homoerotic, chilling or disturbing enough, we’d advise you to steer
clear. hhhhh
The third
effort from
whiz-kid filmmaker Judd
Apatow (he of
The 40-YearOld Virgin and
Knocked Up
fame) sees
him team up
with goofball
veteran Adam Sandler in a film with
plenty of comedy game in-jokes and
man-on-man love-ins.
George Simmons (Sandler) is a
self-absorbed billionaire stand-up
who learns that he has leukaemia
and has just a year to live, making
him reassess his shallow, but funseeming, lifestyle of shagging hotties
and hanging out with superstars in his
LA mansion.
With no-one to trust, he improbably turns to complete stranger, budding comedian Ira Wright (Rogen),
who becomes his wing man, helping
him to write his jokes, reunite him
with his elderly parents and make him
meet his long lost love, Laura.
The film follows their blossoming bromance and mixes obscene
humour (more willy jokes than even
a gayer would make) and deeper,
more penetrating (ooo-er!) thoughts.
It’s touching, lightly funny and a little
over-long, but well worth the watch.

G-A-Y
Sex Party
09.01.10
On Saturday, hundreds of randy pop
fans descended on G-A-Y for a night
of flirty, sexy fun. The night included
a huge Sex Slave auction which saw
G-A-Y staff and punters alike shamelessly selling themselves in order
to raise cash for Jeremy Joseph and
G-A-Y’s massive Amnesty International
fundraising effort.
As well as this, punters wearing
green tops gave lads the green light for
some sexy shenanigans, while swingers, slags and guys in open relationships wore yellow shirts. Off-the-shelf
hotties wore red. We, of course, wore
a luminous green body stocking for
the entire night which seemed to do
the trick. We pulled more than in the
whole of 2009 put together.
G-A-Y’s School Outing is on next
Saturday (23 Jan) from 10.30pm until
5am. Entry is free and you get to jump
the queue if you wear a full school
uniform. Otherwise entry is £1 with a

A Look Back at
the Noughties
08.01.10
The KIMONO KRUSH lads stormed back
into the RVT with their first party of
the decade and A LOOK BACK AT THE
NOUGHTIES last Friday.
DJs The Sugarlow Boys, The Duchess of Pork and Al Dente served up a
medley of indie, retro and pop anthems from the past ten years before
Jonny Woo and Lazy Susan took to the
stage for a casual cubicle tranny romp.
Susan fed Woo her cucumber megaschlong through an onstage makeshift
gloryhole before Woo…well, we think
the photos speak for themselves.
On the packed dancefloor meanwhile, the crowd lapped up the tunes,
eyed up each others’ plaid shirts and
sunk pint after pint of cool beer – the
noughties wrapped up in a nutshell!
The lads are back on Friday 12
February with performances from Ma
Butcher and John Sizzle – not to be
missed!

THE FINEST FOOD & BEST EATERIES IN ALL OF LONDON
Nando’s Frith Street
N
ando’s really went up in our
estimation when it sent round
buff, tops-off boys at Pride last
year. We love that it’s a gay-friendly
company with a Soho branch that is
well in touch with its local community. Also, since Nando’s has been on
Frith Street, it’s nicely dispelled the
stereotype that gay people only like
salad with a calorie-conscious dressing. Not true: we can chow down a
plate of chicken and chips as much
as the next man and the number of
gay men eating here is proof of that.
Nando’s isn’t just about chicken
though – there are some top-notch
veggie options here too.
We went for half a chicken
(medium hot) and a chicken breast
burger (lemon and herb) in the
end. Even though Nando’s is best
known for its fiery PERi-PERi
sauce, the place caters for
lemon and herb lovers as
much as it does the spice
girls among us. The
chicken was beautifully marinated,
massive and we had it with a side of
chips for the satisfaction factor and
corn on the cob for our good health.
The burger came in a Portuguese bun with fresh lettuce and
tomato and with this, we sampled
their brand new side of Macho Peas
(“he’s gotta be so macho...”), which
are essentially mushy peas sexed up
with chilli and mint. They helped us
stick to our New Year’s resolution to
actually get some greens down us
once in a while.
For pudding we tried their divine
chocolate cheesecake and their carrot cake, which was indulgent without being heavy. All finished off with
an espresso to keep us out of that
post-feast coma back at the office.
Nando’s is the perfect place for
a hot and hearty load of grub. It’s
great value, guaranteed to leave you
satiated, and always a good bet if
you’re going out in a big group and
don’t want to worry too much about
your table manners this place is refreshingly informal.

ON THE ROCKS
with Alan Roberts
What bar do you think is best for a first date or hook up
and why?
I think somewhere sleazy would be perfect. Also, somewhere dark would be good too, where no one can see
the wrinkles.
Where do you go for a quiet drink with mates?
I very rarely go out to another bar. I get enough of bars
seeing as I have one of my own! So if I’m having a quiet
night I stay at home.
What would your dream bar be like?
There is a bar in Madrid called Odarko that is absolutely
perfect. It’s very intimate and industrial with loads of open
pipes and metalwork. It’s a bit like the Stock Exchange for
42
thursday 14 january 2010
sleaze bastards!
What celebs would you have there?
I could have Matt Monro singing on the bar with a handful
of rugby players like Gareth Thomas or Ben Cohen, and I’d
have a few boxers for good measure. If Daniel Craig came
to the door I wouldn’t say no. But I wouldn’t have a VIP
area cordoned off with cheap rope. That makes me cringe.
What would your top songs on the jukebox be and why?
Can I have a bit of Ella Fitzgerald? That’d go down well in
the darkroom, followed by ‘Sex Dwarf’ and ‘Fun City’ by
Soft Cell.
What’s the best way to chat someone up?
Pinned up against the wall. I don’t take prisoners. I prefer
it rough and ready.
What’s the best cure for a hangover?
The last hangover I had was in 1979. I seem to recall two
months in Pentonville Prison. That did the trick!
It’s our round – what are you having?
You can’t beat a cup of tea.

Battle of
Homo haunts Halfway II
Heaven and the Two
Brewers are hosting a
massive bus crawl this
February, so ahead of the
drunken tour of London’s
finest gay pubs we spoke
to hostess Crystal
D’Canter about
what’s in store.
We love a good bus tour! Are you as
excited as us?
Yes, I’m really excited. Bus runs
are always a real laugh and rather
drunken. Basically the two bars are
hiring two buses and after leaving
Halfway II Heaven and The Two Brewers, they’ll be visiting loads of bars
around town including the Retro Bar,
the Black Cap, The Stag and the King
William IV.
So I can get the bus from north or south
London, whichever is more convenient
for me?
Yes. Tickets are only £10 and are
available at both the Two Brewers
and Halfway II Heaven now. It’s very
good value, especially since every
place along the way usually provides
food, and of course there’ll be lots of
cabaret performances too. We do leave
bang on time though at midday, so if
you miss the bus you’ll have to catch
up with us yourself.
Do you think that there’ll be different
atmospheres on the two buses?
Well Halfway and the Brewers tend to
have slightly different crowds, so the
buses will probably reflect that. How
do I put this? Halfway might have a
slightly more mature crowd. That said,
after about ten minutes on the bus
and a couple of drinks it’ll probably be
the other way around. Both buses will
be full of fun though.
Will the two buses cross paths at all?
Yes, they should. There’ll probably
be one pub along the way where both
crowds will meet, so we’ll all be together at the same time at some point.
What are your fondest memories from
past bus runs?
Something funny always happens and
it’s always such a great event. Almost
everyone stays with the bus for the
whole route, although last year we lost
two people at The Stag. We picked up
some randoms along the way too.
Will you have any glamorous assistants
helping you on the bus?
I’ll be on board the Halfway bus with
Tanya Hyde and possibly Mrs. Moore,
while the Brewers bus will be hosted
by Heidi Liscious and Skinni Minni.
We’ll be making sure everyone gets
along. At 11am people are a little
more quiet, but after a couple of
doubles everyone’s singing along.
What about your partner in crime, Kelly
Mild? Will she be there?
She’s deserting me! She’s going to
Gran Canaria with her man for the
weekend. I can’t believe it.
And have you got any glamorous frocks
to wear on the day?
Yes! I’ll be running around in heels
with a glass of wine in my hand. Funnily enough we can all walk around
perfectly in our heels - it’s not easy
but we manage - but the guys in
trainers struggle. I’ll be changing my
costume at every venue. I usually run
off, change in the loo, and come out
with everyone desperate for a wee.
So you’ll be wearing a different dress at
each venue?
Yes, I’ll be carrying my trunk with me
and changing at each bar. I usually
theme my outfits. I haven’t decided
on the theme yet, but you’ll find out
on the day.
And will this event be raising any money
for charity?
It is, and that’s another reason why
it’s such a great event. The bars don’t
make any money from it. It’s all for
charity. Punters and the bars are very
generous and the money raised will go
to the HIV charity, The Food Chain.
And what are your plans for 2010?
Well I’m not trying to give up smoking,
that’s for sure. I’m with Kelly Mild
at Halfway II Heaven every Sunday
at 3pm, which is always really nice.
It’s just getting better and better. The
beginning of March is our second anniversary there so you can expect a big
party then.
• The Battle of the Bus Runs is on Saturday 6 February. Buses
depart from Halfway II Heaven and The Two Brewers at midday
sharp and the party starts at 11am. For full info visit their
Facebook page: Battle of the Bus Runs

Central Station
09.01.10
When we rocked up to cabaret hotspot
CENTRAL STATION last Saturday we
were expecting to roll about the floor
laughing with Drag With No Name.
But due to the adverse weather conditions (and we’re guessing a car manufactured before the noughties) Drag
With No Name was unable to attend,
so we were treated to a spectacular
performance from the equally fabulous
Wilma Fingerdoo instead.
Never one to let act of god or man
stand in her way, Wilma brought the
house down with a few crowd pleasers
before owner Martin took to the stage
for a jig with the artiste herself.
Continue the cabaret fun with pop
songstress Kelly Wilde this Friday (15
Jan) before Kevin Cruise sails back into
town this Saturday (16 Jan).

cabaret news
Is anyone else bored shitless by this
weather? It’s so boring, especially
for us trannies. Trust us, scuttling
to Asda on the Old Kent Road in
hooker heels is not our favourite
way to spend a Saturday. So Mother
whore face Nature, sort it! hhh
With the cold and ice in mind, why
not cosy up to a transtastic goddess
this week? At the BLACK CAP (171
Camden High Street, NW1) this
Wednesday (20 Jan) Mrs Moore
and Trindy will be putting on a show.
Trust us, they’re the best double
act since Batman and Robin. Well, Cagney and Lacey at least. DJ Demon will also be
on the decks through the night too. Then it’s all aboard the cruise ship of comedy with
Kevin Cruise on Sunday (17 Jan), so expect a perma-tanned night of hilarious tunes and
cheese on toast tales from the biggest cruiser on the seven seas. The day after, Titti La
Camp and Voodoo Mick return for more duets, slapstick fun and chavtastic singing on
Sunday (17 Jan). hhh At CENTRAL STATION (37 Wharfdale Road, King’s Cross, N1) on
Friday (15 Jan) pop diva Kelly Wilde will be singing her socks off to some seriously cool
tunes, while Kevin Cruise docks on Saturday (16 Jan) for a night of comedy. Next Friday
(22 Jan) grubby hooped whore Wilma Fingerdoo will be shaming the Fingerdoo family
name and sniffing out more cock while entertaining the bar. hhh We’re known for forgetting our name after a few gin and Dubbonets, but the man who never even bothered
to come up with a name to begin with, The Drag With No Name, will be hosting a night of
cabaret on Sunday (17 Jan) at THE STAG (15 Bressenden Place, Victoria, SW1). hhh
Meanwhile the delightful Dave Lynn will be at the TWO BREWERS (114 Clapham High
Street, Clapham, SW4) tonight (Thurs 14 Jan). Entry will be free before 10pm, £3 after.
The Boy George Experience is a busy boy this month. He’ll be appearing at the Brewers
on Saturday (16 Jan) for more Karma Chameleon fun, and he’ll also be up in E17 at THE
VICTORIA (15 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, E17) at the end of the month on Saturday (31
Jan) if you’re a north London lad. hhh As well as serving delish curries on Monday and
Tuesday from midday until 8pm for just £2.99, as well as selected drinks from £1.90,
this Sunday (17 Jan) at HALFWAY II HEAVEN Crystal D’Canter and Kelly Mild will be ruling
the roost at their Sunday party from 3pm. A word of warning though, the cabaret crew
are feeling mighty chilly at the moment, so do excuse us if we start rubbing your arse in
our face. We’re only trying to get the chill out of our cheeks.

Miss Shirley
Where do you buy all your frocks
and wigs?
Anywhere and everywhere. I’m the
kind of girl that if I like it, I buy it!
eBay is fab for big wigs. Other than
that Pak’s wig store is amazing.
How would you describe your act?
I’m possibly the tallest lady ever
to grace the floor of a disco. I’m a
towering force of fun, banter and
entertainment who endeavours,
week in week out, to provoke a
reaction from clubbers with my
impromptu dance routines and
stage antics!
Who’s your cabaret idol? That’s a hard one as there are so
many talented acts out there, but
my favourite has to be Laquisha
Jonz and Kandi Kane-Baxter. Charlie, who created both characters,
is an amazing character actor and
always puts on a bloody good show.
Bette Rinse is an idol of mine too.
She’s given me so much fab advice
over time.
What’s been your most embarrassing
moment on stage?
Hmm, where to start? I have
tripped, stumbled and fallen out of
my outfit quite a few times. I think
the worst time was when I was
talking about Michelle McManus

at a gig. I wasn’t being very nice
only to be told after the show that
she had been in the audience and
wanted to meet me. I got out of
there quicker than a tranny running
to a MAC make up sale!
What’s your best putdown? I have quite a sharp tongue and am
not afraid to use it. I think one of
my favourites has to be ‘You’re the
reason condoms were invented.’
Best show stopping song?
My favourite song to do is
‘Oops!...I’m Pregnant Again’. Although I’m probably best known for
‘Bimbo Girl’, a re-write of Aqua’s
‘Barbie Girl’.
Got any good make up tips?
A good foundation is a must and
as long as you don’t end up looking
like Coco the Clown I think you’re
half way there.
What else have you got coming up

TAURUS
You Taureans like to think
you’re pretty cool, don’t
you? But, by a mile, you’re
the most jealous and
possessive sign. You might
not like to show it, but this week you’ll
be forced to reveal how much you care.
It won’t be fun, but it’ll be worth it.
Top Tip: Reaveal your true feelings.

If you’re a fan of Countdown you probably already
know that Aries can be
rearranged into the word
arse. After that you’re left
with an ‘I’, which is handy, because
almost every sentence you utter begins
with it. Self-obsessed and a total butt,
isn’t it about time you thought about
other people?
Top Tip: It’s not all about you, y’know.

GEMINI
Gemini’s connection with
the 3rd house means you
can concentrate well. You
have an insatiable energy
for work and an attention
to detail that other signs don’t come
close to. Utilise this power this week
and you’ll reach a new career high.
Top Tip: Use the force Gems.

CANCER
You’re not the emotional
sort. But despite being a
dry old stick you love
eliciting an emotional
reaction in others, mostly
by making people cry. Yep, you’re a
cunt like that. But the flaws you see in
others are actually a reflection of your
own problems, so think about that.
Top Tip: You’re the problem, not them.

LEO
Ruled by the Sun, Leos
can beam out a relaxing
warmth or scorch the shit
out of the other signs,
depending on their mood.
And since you’re also the only sign
that’s fixed, you tend to be inflexible
and stubborn. But everyone knows that
being burnt by Leo is grim, so focus on
being more flexible instead.
Top Tip: Roll with it.

Did you know that Virgo’s
number is 6? Did you also
know that that’s often
called the devil’s number,
which basically means
you’re the epitome of pure evil? This
week 6 will be an important number.
Check your bank balance. You might
be in for a nasty surprise.
Top Tip: 6 will be significant.

LIBRA
There was a time when
you appreciated things in
life: the sound of the rain
on the window or a phone
call from an old friend. But
lately things have been a blur. You don’t
notice the sky or that there was a naked
woman squatting on a traffic cone on
the tube this morning. Slow down.
Top Tip: Slow things down Libra.

SCORPIO
Deep down you’re
yearning for some dirty
sex. There was a time
when you thought you
were totally vanilla, but
that was before you tried tutti frutti.
There are plenty of places to head for a
kinky time. Whatever you’re into go to a
place where people know what they’re
doing. That way you’ll make sure your
night is more S&M than A&E.
Top Tip: Kick off 2010 with some kink.

SAGITTARIUS
Sad old Sagi. No matter
what you do you just can’t
seem to shift that old
feeling inside. Whether it
was a parent, lover or
friend, someone used to put you down,
or bring out the worst in you. But the
key words are ‘used to’. That was the
past, so don’t be a prisoner to it. Free
yourself for the future.
Top tip: Forget the past.

CAPRICORN
Quentin Crisp was a
Capricorn, so unless you
have a penchant for purple
hair and dainty hats,
you’ve probably got a
quick wit. This week use it to the
maximum. Everywhere you go people
will be charmed by your humour. Don’t
think so? Just you wait. Get back in
touch with friends you haven’t seen
since Christmas and you’ll see.
Top Tip: Get socialising.

AQUARIUS
Yes the snow and ice has
been a total pain, but
there’s no need to lose
your rag (and control of
your bowels) every time
you’re delayed on public transport. Are
you really in that much of a rush to get
home? Your place is poorly heated and
shabbily decorated, so just relax and
don’t get in such a tizz.
Top Tip: What’s the rush, Aquarius?
Passion Rating: eeeee
PISCES
Have you been thinking
about opening your
relationship lately? Part of
you wants your man to
yourself, but another side
of you would love to see him rogering a
total stranger. Tread carefully though,
once you let this particular genie out of
the bottle there’s no going back.
Remember that sometimes fantasies
are better left as just that.
Top Tip: Open or closed? You decide.

WITH REPORTER KARL RILEY
news in brief
Would gay marriages be a reality under
a Tory government?
Political blogs are discussing whether gay marriage may be a reality
under a Conservative leadership. Pundits say it could help the party
win votes from gay people still angry at Section 28 and Tory policies of
the past. The party says there has been ‘very limited’ discussion of gay
marriage itself but that it is interested in gay people’s views on whether
proper marriage would be favourable to the current civil partnerships.
British gay Muslims made homeless
An increasing number of young gay Muslims are being made homeless after fleeing forced marriages, according to a charity. The Albert
Kennedy Trust which supports gay runaways says they have witnessed an
increase in the last six months and that some have also been subjected
to violence.
Proposition 8 legal bid begins
A legal challenge to California’s Proposition 8, which bans same sex
marriage in the state, began this week. So far gay couples have given
intimate accounts of their private and public lives discussing the ‘disappointment’ and ‘shame’ of not being able to legally wed. The court has
also heard expert testimony from a history professor at Harvard University who disputes assertions that history has only recognised marriage
between a man and woman.

Anti-gay MP resigns after affair with teen
A 60-year-old MP who likened homosexuality to paedophilia and said it was a mental
illness, has resigned from her post after having an affair with a teenager and attempting
suicide. Iris Robinson, the wife of Northern
Ireland’s first minister, Peter Robinson, had
an affair with 19-year-old Kirk McCambley
who she had known since she he was nine.
Gay magazine Attitude have since tried to
contact McCambley to be a cover star and
there is now an internet campaign to get the
song Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel
to number one in this week’s charts.
Gay couple imprisoned in Malawi
There is growing condemnation of
authorities in Malawi after a gay
couple were imprisoned for holding
an engagement ceremony. Steven
Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga
were arrested on 28 December in
Malawi, where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by 14 years in
prison. Gay rights campaigners and
Amnesty International are calling for
their release. They are due to be tried
this weekend. In a letter to British
campaigner Peter Tatchell they said
they were suffering ‘appalling’ conditions in prison and had been threatened with physical examinations to
determine whether they had had sex.
IBM named top gay employer
Technology company IBM has been named the best employer for gay
people by equality organisation Stonewall. It came top of 100 gayfriendly employers in Stonewall’s annual Workplace Equality Index for
the second time. Employers are asked to demonstrate how their efforts
to support gay staff have a lasting impact on their workplace.

After the indulgences of Christmas and New Year,
many of us are trying to get trim and healthy again,
so we asked Soho Gyms’ rather foxy personal trainer
Joe Latham to give us some tips on how to get in
shape for 2010. Joe works with a range of clients
and helps them achieve their goals and objectives
through effective and enjoyable training, so he’s wellplaced to give us a few pointers.
• For those who have eaten too
many pies, weight loss can be a very
easy thing to do. It’s about creating a calorie deficit, and there are
three ways to do this. 1) Reduce the
amount of calories you put into your
body. 2) Burn more calories than you
put in. 3) A combination of the two –
the most effective way.
• A good way to burn fat is through
high intensity training. Short bursts
of high intensity have been proven to
be a lot more effective against fighting fat compared to long sessions at
a low intensity. A simple way of doing
this is interval training, eg run at 80%

skin
Getting fit
for 2010
• For those of you who are looking
to bulk up, I find a good technique is
varying the weights and repetitions.
Switch between one exercise with a
heavy weight and low reps then to
a exercise with a lighter weight and
high reps.

TIPS FOR STAYING
HOT & HEALTHY
• The first thing you need to do
before you pick up a dumbbell or
jump on a treadmill is to have a goal.
This goal has to be SMART! It must
be Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Realistic and Time-Framed. This will
give you the best chance of achieving what you want to do and keep
your motivation levels up.

intensity for 30 seconds and then
walk at 50% intensity for one minute.
Repeat for 15 minutes.
• Supplements are a great way to get
the most out of your training. Protein
shakes will provide your body with
extra building blocks to build muscle,
they taste great and they’re very
quick to take after a workout.
• Hydration is also a key thing to remember when you’re training. When
you train, water leaves your body
through sweat and toxins build up in
your body so it is very important to
stay hydrated. You should be looking
at drinking around five pints of water
a day. Your mental and physical
performance levels will stay up, your
body will naturally wash out toxins,
and your skin will be hydrated and
feeling great just to name a few.
• If you really want to get the most
out of your training and your time at
the gym, a personal trainer can push
you to max and have you looking
and feeling fantastic. Their expertise
can really take you to the next level,
whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned trainer.

CARTOONS
Cartoonist David
Shenton tells us
about his love of
animation and breaks
down what can take
you from being a
scribbler to a star.
I
was an art teacher and had
a big painting exhibition in
Manchester and The Guardian
wrote how delicate and feminine
my lines were, so I thought the
gay press would come down,
but they didn’t, so I sent them a
cartoon where there was an exhibition of a big male nude, saying,
‘I expect it’s the token male nude
so he can get a write-up in Gay News.’ Then they became interested in my cartoons and I started working more and more for the
gay press and they’ve accumulated over the years.
I started doing them for Gay News in 1978. At first I just did
cartoons for fun. I was a barfly and clubber and I’d listen in to
conversations and things would strike me as funny, so I’d go home
and draw them. But after HIV came, people wanted more serious
topics and so I
got a bit more
political.
I did a big
soap cartoon
for about five
years for Boyz,
and it was called Prisoners of Love. That was really great fun to
do, because everything else was very serious at the time. I was
criticising health organisations for their safe sex campaigns which
no-one was paying any attention to. They had all these
pics of men just sleeping on
each other, which were so
boring. When I took the mick,
they noticed my cartoons and
asked me to do cartoons for
them so that they would reach
gay men in places like the
leather bars.
I think cartoonists have
to be cheeky and you get
noticed if you’re cheeky. If you
can get a snide point across
without being too vicious. I
think that’s the skill of being a
great cartoonist. You take the
issue, move it sideways and
do a lateral point on the piece.
My dad was a poster
writer for all the cinemas and
then he went on to do the
oranges and lemons that go
inside one-armed bandits. I always helped him out. I was supposed to take his business over until he found out I was gay. But
because he was self-employed, I knew I could be self-employed
too without worrying.
The cartoonist I liked the most was the guy who did St Trinian’s, Ronald Searle. That was back in the 1950s I think and it’s
still popular today - Rupert Everett is Miss Fritton in the films!
Ronald Searle’s
drawings are
really long and
scratchy and
everyone looks like
death warmed-up.
Lots of people have
tried to copy him but haven’t pulled it off. He used to be in all the
papers like The Daily Express, which was the most popular paper
in those days. I’m not really stuck on American superhero comics,
but I do like American romance comics.
Cartoonists are very insular and often work in back rooms on
upside down tea trays. I have an exhibition on at the moment with
Kate Charlesworth and we dominated the gay press in 80s and
90s. Without noticing it, we’ve written a gay history, which involves
the clothes people wore and what they said.
Mostly I do four frame strips for my comics, which is classic.
I take something and make a joke of it. I think cartoons should
be looked at, read and flipped over. I think you should be able to
read them in 30 seconds. I suppose mine are neat and linear, a bit
elegant. Mostly they’re in black and white because they’re in the
paper, but it’s nice to have them in colour when you can.
There are so many good cartoonists out there and graphic
novels are finally hitting Britain. There are lots of women doing
them: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and Fun Home by Alison
Bechdel. It’s happening, but very slowly. All the manga things are
coming over from Japan too and graphic novel sections are much
bigger than they used to be, which I think is amazing.
I think people are a bit snooty about cartoons here in the UK
and people pretend not to be able to read them properly too. They
make out like they don’t know how to jump from one square to
next. And people think that they’re trashy, but I think that’s part of
their appeal.
