The Paraguay Project
Inspiration:
Sondra Miles, the daughter of derma e® vice president, Linda Miles and
member of the derma e® family, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in a
rural community in Paraguay teaching environmental and health
education. While living in Paraguay, Sondra saw and felt the needs
of the Paraguayan people for educational opportunities,
sustainable incomes, and empowerment, especially empowerment
of woman and youth. Additionally, Sondra observed the rapid
destruction of the forest and other natural resources upon which
much of the country is dependent and felt the need for these
resources to be protected for future generations.
According to Sondra, "Just like the intricate Spiderweb
Lace, we're all connected. Paraguay is a country that
doesn't often get a lot of attention, and our help can really
make a difference in the lives of these people.
Through the success of The Paraguay Project, we hope to
inspire others to champion causes that are important to
them, whether high profile or lesser known."
Spiderweb Lace and its uses:
Ñanduti is the Guaraní word for “spiderweb.” Ñanduti is a delicate,
distinctive and remarkably intricate needlework lace that is a
traditional craft of Paraguayan people.

These colorful, round pieces of lace come in a range of sizes. Individually, they make a lovely centerpiece for a desk or table, either alone
or placed underneath a floral vase display. Often times the pieces are
woven together to make a tablecloth, or mixed with fabrics to make a

The Paraguay Project
Supporting Families, Wildlife and their Habitats
THE PARAGUAY PROJECT is dermae®’s three-tiered charitable
program created to empower the people of Paraguay by
supporting fair trade, the environment and helping to establish
unique economic opportunities.
Here’s how it works:
Tier I:
By purchasing beautiful, hand-crafted Spiderweb Lace at a fair market price directly from co-ops in
Paraguay, derma e® provides economic opportunities for these artisans which in turn, helps their families
improve their lives.
Tier II:
derma e® is selling Spiderweb Lace in the U.S. to boutiques and directly to customers online via its website –
www.dermae.com/lace. These profits will be donated in full to two non-governmental organizations (NGO’s)
that serve the people of Paraguay:
• Global Infancia that works to protect the rights of the children in Paraguay.
• Guyra Paraguay that fights to protect birds and their habitats, including the beautiful,
bio-diverse Paraguayan rainforest.
Tier III:
derma e® will donate a percentage of all product sales to THE PARAGUAY PROJECT.
Recent Progress:
• In 2012, Guyra Paraguay purchased and monitored land, and organized educational programs,
campaigns and trainings to conserve and protect the environment.
• In 2011, dermae® made a donation that will help Global Infancia build sanitary facilities and install a new
drainage system for Padres Unidos, a rural school in Carapegua, Paraguay. This will help maintain
minimum standards of hygiene and reduce the risk of disease in the school and the community.
• In 2010, derma e® made a donation that enabled the community of San Pedro, Paraguay to purchase
building materials in order to build an additional classroom for their school that educates 80 students
(grades 1 through 9) in core subjects.
• In 2009, Guyra Paraguay focused on biological monitoring of bird species and scientific research as well
as sustainable development to protect the bio-diversity of Paraguay.
• In 2008, derma e® ’s donations helped build a nursing school in Paraguay with full accreditation from the
Paraguayan government.

The Paraguay Project is derma e®’s three-tiered charitable program that helps

in Paraguay, sells them to US boutiques and online, and donates full profits as
well as a percentage of all product sales to three non-governmental
organizations: Guyra Paraguay, Clyde E. Bay Foundation and GlobaI Infancia.
Guyra Paraguay has recently made significant progress in working to protect the
environment and wildlife. This will help improve the quality of life for
Paraguayans and assure that there are resources for future generations.

Simi Valley, CA (December 2012) – derma e®, a leader in natural anti-aging antioxidant
skincare and treatment products, has hired Kate Tart to fill the new position of Corporate Trainer.
As the fastest growing natural skincare brand in each of the last four years* and a Top-5 leader
in the facial care category, derma e®’s more involved approach to training is expected to help
the company continue to thrive.
With seven years of experience in the beauty industry, a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science
with a concentration in Education as well as a license in Esthetics, Kate brings a vast amount of
knowledge to this position. Working in different areas of the skin care industry such as training,
management and customer service, Kate has trained on skin care and cosmetic lines,
suggested educated product recommendations based on specific skin care needs, developed
easy-to-follow skin care routines and created short-term and long-term skin care goals for
clients.
In this new role, Kate is responsible for training on derma e®’s award-winning products,
company and philosophy in a simple, efficient manner. This will include in-person, Skype, video
chat or phone trainings to employees at retail stores and regional and national chains,
consumers, as well as derma e® sales team members and demonstration representatives. Kate
will also be participating in consumer events, sharing knowledge of our 80+ naturally effective

Miles and her husband Ron live on a three-acre ranch in Acton, California surrounded by

healing. Their older daughter Sonny graduated from MIT, spent two years in the Peace Corp in
Paraguay and is currently a medical resident at UCSF. Their younger daughter Kristy is a
recent graduate from Tufts University and is currently a licensed DVM who resides in
Massachusetts.
