Herrington School Project
Because of the coinciding of Chanukah and Thanksgiving this year, the
Project Light One Candle has been postponed until next year. Instead,
the committee has decided to focus its charitable efforts on a local
Pontiac school that is in need. The Herrington School has 12 different
classes with at least 40 children in each class. Below is a list of the
items they need the most. This list may be updated as needed, so
please check the Eblast each week if you are interested in contributing to
this worthwhile project.

In Radu Mihaileanu's Live and Become, an
affecting drama based on actual events, a
young Ethiopian boy is swept up into Operation
Moses, a joint effort between American and
Israeli troops aimed at relocating Jewish
refugees from Africa to Israel.
Hoping to shield her son from an impoverished life or death, the boy's Christian mother forces him to declare
himself Jewish and join the exodus. The boy is adopted by a Sephardic family and migrates to Israel.
Awards
Longest list of awards I have ever seen. Best Film: Detroit Jewish Film Festival. Audience Awards from
other Jewish Film Festivals: Boston, Washington, Miami, Atlanta, San Diego, Orange County, Palm Desert,
Palm Beach, Tampa, Seattle, Detroit, Washington, Aspen. International Awards: Cesar (French Oscar),
Berlin, Vancouver, Copenhagen, and many more.
Please join us a week earlier than usual this month for this extraordinary film. Please feel free to bring a
friend. Please bring a snack to share. Movie Night is a free event for adults. All we ask is that you stay after
the movie to help clean up. Movie Night starts at 7:00 pm. Film rolls at 7:30. See you at the movies.
Dear Friends,
Happy Chanukah.
This month we experience the least amount of daylight and also the promise of longer
days to come. For some, less daylight can mean a darkening of our spirits. The effect
of less light outside can mean less light inside, and thus, less light emanating from us.
So we go to bed earlier, hunker in, go
out less, hibernate, to restore our
energy as the days begin to lengthen.
This is natural, to ebb and flow with the
seasons. Shabbat, whose beginning
and end is tied with sunset, helps us to
join the rhythm of our natural world.
Animals “get it.” We can too. We can
enjoy the dark and draw strength from it,
even while anticipating more light.
I hope the secular new year is one of
peace and good health for us all.

Sisterhood Speaks
Sisterhood’s entire November meeting was devoted to hands-on Tikkun Olam activities, and we have
several exciting initiatives planned for the remainder of this year. We are happy to be partnering with
Haven of Oakland County. Haven provides a wide variety of services to families and individuals touched
by domestic violence and works to end violence in our community. To learn more
about Haven and the work they do, go to www.haven-oakland.org. Sisterhood will
be collecting items from their Needs List (new items only, please) which includes
gift cards, food, bath and toiletry items, baby, household and clothing needs. Look
for our collection box as you come in the front door of CST, consider bringing an
item or two whenever you are at CST, or email us at our new address,
[email protected] to make arrangements to drop off a donation. Other
projects this year will include outreach to the Jewish community in Turkey and the ongoing Restore the
Beautiful women’s health initiative.
Don’t despair if you missed the Chanukah Spree during Family Ed in November. It’s not too late to stock
up on items you may want to put away for next year – candles, menorahs, gift wrap, gift items and more.
Contact one of our gift shop chairs at [email protected] to see what wonderful bargains you can
still scoop up!
Speaking of gifts, why not give yourself the gift of membership this year? Contact our membership chair,
Carrie Keough ([email protected]) to become a member and take advantage of all that Sisterhood
has to offer.
Hope to see you on Thursday December 12 at 7:00 PM at the Sisterhood Board meeting where
everyone is always welcome, and at the next Sisterhood Women’s Night Out on January 23! Mark your
calendar and watch for more details.
CONGREGATION SHIR TIKVAH
Services and Prayer Opportunities
At CST, every Shabbat contains at least one
Friday night and one Saturday morning prayer
opportunity.
6:15PM., FRIDAY NIGHT SHORT, SWEET, SPIRITUAL
SHABBAT!! Complete by 7:00 pm, this service
offers a full Shir Tikvah prayer experience in a
condensed time; affording the rest of the evening
to go home, or out with friends and family for a
Shabbat meal. We begin at 5:50pm with some
time to connect with others and enjoy some light
snacks (cheese, hummus, fruit etc.) to tide you
over. (There is no oneg after the service).
7:15PM., FRIDAY NIGHT AHHHHHHH what is fondly
known as “Music Shabbat”. These lively services
are filled with an extra large dose of singing,
dancing, lively, prayer-full energy, making it perfect for both adults and children. Oneg follows.
7:45PM., FRIDAY NIGHT The “Shir Tikvah basic,”
this service is orientated to adults (though open
to children). In our familiar style this is a beautiful,
spiritual, singing, participative Shabbat service
with a fuller liturgy and sermon or Torah discussion
than the other services. Plenty of time for oneg
schmoozing, noshing and visiting with your CST
“family” follows the service.
10:00AM., SATURDAY MORNING When led by our
bar/bat mitzvah young adults, these services offer
a wonderful window into the full religious, spiritual
and social experience that Shir Tikvah offers in
the Family Educational Program. Each individual
brings their unique gifts, talents and experience to
this expression. At other times, this Saturday morning service offers a time for intimate shared prayer,
with all of the warmth and spirituality that is Shir
Tikvah. All Saturday morning services are followed
by an oneg.
PJ TOT SHABBAT (Friday nights, dates vary) A prayer
experience geared toward children 8 years old
and younger and their families. Full of music,
movement, and age-appropriate teaching, these
services are scheduled throughout the year on
varying Friday nights at 6:15 p.m. and last approximately 30 minutes. Fun crafts and kid snacks
follow the service.
FAMILY EDUCATION SERVICE (Sunday
Mornings During the Religious School Year) A
prayer service which kicks off our Family Education program on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Students gather with their classes to pray, sing, move
and experience the richness of community for this
30 minute service. Parents are always welcome, as
are any members of our community.

CST KITCHEN COMMITTEE
We recently formed this committee to maintain cleanliness and organization in the CST kitchen. All
Oneg supplies such as trays, paper products, utensils, table linens, etc., have already been labeled and
categorized. Detailed instructions concerning Oneg setup and cleanup are posted on the kitchen closet
door, which will be helpful to all, including our new congregants.
Our future plans include cleaning the fridge and freezer. This will be done weekly by one of the committee members and the entire group will meet monthly to address any major issues, but we obviously
need the cooperation of anyone using the kitchen.
Please contact any of us if you have any questions, comments or would like to join our team. Thanks for
your support!

Soulful Living: Programs to Cultivating Inner Life and Well Being
Dear Community,
How can we live with greater inner peace of mind? What is the way to healing,
empowerment, peace, and even joy from within?
Soulful Living is a series of experiences for Congregation Shir Tikvah. Each
experience invites you to journey inward and tend to the deepest part of you
that longs for and knows: Wholeness, Meaning, Connectedness, Wonder and
Vitality.
Below are the various learning opportunities and entry points to join in this
experience. The Scholar in Residence Program is funded by the vision and
generosity of Marge and Robert Alpern. It is a gift for us to enjoy.
It is my deep hope that you will join in fully and often, and that we may all
know: Soulful Living.

Family Waterpark Overnight
February 22, 2014
Bring your family for a blast of fun as we play and
learn about water at an indoor waterpark. Take a
walk through the history of water from Rebekah’s
Well in the Torah to modern day Israel and our own
Great Lakes.
This is a one night winter retreat held at the Best
Western in Sterling Heights. While we enjoy the
water, we will take a walk through time exploring
water from Rebekah’s well in Genesis to modern
day Israeli innovations.
