We still have need in a lot areas. Are you a night
owl? We need congregants to spend the night at
Shul. There will always be 3 people on a shift and
if one person gets sleepy, you can rest on Rabbi
Arnie's couch. Do you like to drive? We need
congregants to help shuttle our guests from CST
in the mornings and back here in the afternoons.
Maybe you like to cook. We need help in the
kitchen during breakfast or dinner or to make
appetizers at home and bring them in for our
guests. There are lots of different ways to
volunteer and we will help you find the one that fits
you.

If you really want to help, but won't be around for
that week, please consider a monetary donation to
help cover the costs associated with the week. In
the past, SOS at CST has always been funded
entirely through donations. No amount is too
small, but please consider one of these levels. For
$360 you could sponsor dinner for our guests for
an evening. For $180 you could sponsor lunch or
cover the cost to rent a large TV for our guests.
For $36 you could help offset the cost of games
and crafts for the children that will be staying with
us. Any amount is helpful and checks can be
made out to CST with the letters "SOS" on the
memo line. Please take some time to consider the
ways that you might be able to help CST support
these people who have fallen on hard times and
just need a safe place to sleep at night. Don't let
this opportunity for you and your family to do a
wonderful and meaningful mitzvah pass you by. If
you have any questions, please contact Deb

From the Study of Rabbi Arnie
Dear Friends,
We enter summer this month. One of the fun ways to connect with our people when travelling is to check out the local synagogue. Many are historical and architecturally significant. Some Jewish communities have fascinating histories and experience a myriad of current challenges. Often they offer guided tours, and are warmly welcoming of guests on Shabbat. If you check out a shul, do send us a photo of you standing outside. We’ll add it to our display board.
May your travels be safe and rewarding. May the warmth and long light of day bring vitality and renewal.

These changes were unplanned and unfortunate. But in another way, they taught
us how unpredictable life is. They also taught us to move more slowly and
deliberately as we move into our third decade and our first rabbinic transition.
Much of this year has been spent implementing a more thorough, transparent
process for finding a new Rabbi after Rabbi Arnie’s retirement in June 2016. We
convened a large Rabbinic Search Committee, representing a cross-section of CST
membership. We formulated new policies to help the Committee in its work and

Forum on Reform and Renewal Judaism today. They followed up with a program
for getting input from us on the qualities we’re looking for in a new Rabbi. In its
search, the Committee has an excellent template to follow, essentially the well
thought- out process created by URJ and its rabbinic partner, CCAR.
This year we also conducted a comprehensive search for a new Education Director,
and just this last week we announced the results. Sarah Chisholm, a long-time

assuming the post effective immediately. With Sarah we gained a leader who is not
only very competent, but who has an excellent relationship with the parents and
students in our Religious School and a wealth of first-hand knowledge of how our
school operates. She has wonderful ideas about moving our school forward.
My thanks to all of you for continuing to support the officers and Board through this
challenging year. I’m sure that we are positioned well to find the best Rabbi for our
community and to grow our innovative education program.
My special thanks to Rabbi Arnie who offers wise counsel, Rich Spitzer, the best
“right-hand” guy a Pres. could ask for, Herschel Poger whose commitment to CST is
strong and who single-handedly created our wonderful CST softball teams, a vital
way to reach out to our younger members.
And lastly my deep gratitude to Lorelei Berg, who is very much the heart and soul of
CST. She’s been a terrific help on every project we started, and she carried out
many of them on her own. Next time you check out the website or look at an E-blast
to find out the latest from CST, thank her because both were her creations.
So, to the “mensches on the benches” at CST – my heartfelt thanks and
appreciation.
May we all enjoy an exciting new year!
B’shalom,
I am thrilled to accept the position of Director of Lifelong Learning of the
Sam and Jean Frankel Family Education Program at Congregation Shir
Tikvah. Because I have worn so many hats at Shir Tikvah over the past 25
years, most of you know me or my extended family, already. Together with
our Shir Tikvah community, we have celebrated our simchas- weddings,
births, and b’nai mitzvah, as well as received support during life’s difficult
times. Shir Tikvah is our home.
Sarah Chisholm
In addition to being a longtime member of CST, I have been on the CST
staff since 2013. I have held multiple officer positions on the CST
Sisterhood Board, including President. I have co-chaired the Camp Tikvah
and Empty Bowls Committees, volunteered in classrooms, and helped
anywhere and at any time when needed. I believe first-hand knowledge is
crucial to successfully managing the Family Education program at CST,
both in the short term while we are in this period of transition, and for many
years to come. I look forward to continuing our fantastic Family Ed tradition
while introducing innovative programming for every generation. Look for
updates in the Schrier and Eblast with details of off-site field trips and new
adult programming.
I know that Shir Tikvah is far more than a synagogue. It is our spiritual
home. It is often the center of a family’s social calendar and a launch pad
for Tikkun Olam, it is comfort and solace in our darkest hours, and it is an
incredibly significant part of our children’s education, as well as our own. I
know what Shir Tikvah means to the community and I take the
responsibility of preserving this amazing institution with profound
seriousness. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.

As you are considering which fund to direct your next tribute
donation, please consider giving to the Youth Scholarship Fund.
This fund awards scholarships to Shir Tikvah kids going to a
Jewish Camp, school, or Teen Mission trip to Israel. We have
depleted the fund over the last year as a result of sending a
remarkable number of CST teens on the Teen Mission 2014 trip
(nine of our kids went!) and continuing our support of many
Jewish summer camp experiences. With another Teen Mission
year quickly approaching, we could use your help in replenishing
this greatly appreciated and extremely well used source of funding
Jewish experiences for our youth.

CONGREGATION SHIR TIKVAH
Services and Prayer Opportunities
At CST, every Shabbat contains at least one
Friday night and one Saturday morning prayer
opportunity.
6:15PM., FRIDAY NIGHT SHORT, SWEET, SPIRITUAL
SHABBAT!! Complete by 7:00 pm, this service
offers a full Shir Tikvah prayer experience in a
condensed time; affording the rest of the evening
to go home, or out with friends and family for a
Shabbat meal. We begin at 5:50pm with some
time to connect with others and enjoy some light
snacks (cheese, hummus, fruit etc.) to tide you
over. (There is no oneg after the service).
7:15PM., FRIDAY NIGHT AHHHHHHH what is fondly
known as “Music Shabbat”. These lively services
are filled with an extra large dose of singing,
dancing, lively, prayer-full energy, making it perfect for both adults and children. Oneg follows.
7:45PM., FRIDAY NIGHT The “Shir Tikvah basic,”
this service is orientated to adults (though open
to children). In our familiar style this is a beautiful,
spiritual, singing, participative Shabbat service
with a fuller liturgy and sermon or Torah discussion
than the other services. Plenty of time for oneg
schmoozing, noshing and visiting with your CST
“family” follows the service.
10:00AM., SATURDAY MORNING When led by our
bar/bat mitzvah young adults, these services offer
a wonderful window into the full religious, spiritual
and social experience that Shir Tikvah offers in
the Family Educational Program. Each individual
brings their unique gifts, talents and experience to
this expression. At other times, this Saturday morning service offers a time for intimate shared prayer,
with all of the warmth and spirituality that is Shir
Tikvah. All Saturday morning services are followed
by an oneg.
PJ TOT SHABBAT (Friday nights, dates vary) A prayer
experience geared toward children 8 years old
and younger and their families. Full of music,
movement, and age-appropriate teaching, these
services are scheduled throughout the year on
varying Friday nights at 6:15 p.m. and last approximately 30 minutes. Fun crafts and kid snacks
follow the service.
FAMILY EDUCATION SERVICE (Sunday
Mornings During the Religious School Year) A
prayer service which kicks off our Family Education program on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Students gather with their classes to pray, sing, move
and experience the richness of community for this
30 minute service. Parents are always welcome, as
are any members of our community.

Shir Tikvah Cares!
Spotlight on the Caring Community….
The Caring Community at Shir Tikvah has
been hard at work over the last month
supporting our fellow members in need
during the recent flooding that occurred in
Metro Detroit. Phone calls were made to
members who lived in potentially affected
areas to check on them and see if they
needed our support, emails were sent out to
further assess needs and match up members who could help with members who
needed help, as well as to provide information on valuable resources that might
be able to assist. We delivered 50 care packages of Elwin & Co.’s delicious lentil
soup and scones to those members impacted by the flooding to hopefully
brighten their day in the midst of the clean-up. Shir Tikvah members have
continued to show their love and generosity through monetary donations, offers
to open their homes for laundry and showering facilities, as well as making meals
for families in need.
We are so tremendously proud of our community for supporting each other
through this very difficult time. Thank you to all of those who helped; be it by one
of the means mentioned above, or through your thoughts and prayers. It is truly
appreciated!
Caring in this way feels good to everyone involved. If would like to participate in
the actions of the Shir Tikvah Caring Community, please contact Lorelei Berg to
learn more. This wonderful group embraces our congregation in many ways:
through phone calls and meals to members who are sick, by helping at shivas of
our beloved members, by sending care packages to celebrate the birth of a baby,
and the list goes on. You may participate as a regular, or as a drop-in, whatever
works best for you – but either feels wonderful as the mitzvah that it is!
ANNUAL LUAU GRILLIN’ SHABBAT
ALOHA! The Divas invite you to unpack your brightly-colored short sleeve shirts and
shorts, touch up that pedicure and whet your appetite for the popular CST Grillin’
Shabbat feast on June 12th. This event is always very well attended and will be the
concluding Diva Dinner of the season. There will be plenty for all to enjoy: grilled beef
burgers, veggie burgers and kosher hot dogs. Your favorite barbeque side dishes will
include pasta salads, coleslaw and baked beans, just to name a few. A surprise or two will
make this a special “all you can eat” event!
Dinner is at 5:45 p.m., followed by a lively Music Shabbat service. Join us to share food,
friendship and prayer to welcome in our (much welcomed) Michigan Summer.
Reservations and payment info need to be in the CST office by noon on Wednesday, June
10th. Cost is $8.00 for adults and $5 for children. Kiddies under 5 eat for free. Please
be reminded there is a $3.00 surcharge for late registration and walk-in diners.
Please mark your calendar for a delicious and “LEI’D BACK” evening!

A NOTE FROM THE
CST KITCHEN COMMITTEE
It’s terrific how well our kitchen is being utilized by so many groups, both CST members and outside
vendors, for a wide variety of culinary events! However, it has come to our attention that several
items are missing from the kitchen closet, specifically many sturdy stainless steel serving pieces and
the dozens of forest green tablecloths that were in the kitchen and main storage room. Anyone with
information of their whereabouts, please contact Lorelei. Thank you.
