Nestled between the two redwood forests in a thriving dairy community, Sunset magazine confirms, “you can immerse yourself in Ferndale’s Victorian spirit.” Park your car to step back in time. Enjoy magnificently preserved Victorian architecture as you stroll; pick up visitor information from any shop. On the National Register of Historic Places, Ferndale’s Main Street is a photogra- Christmas in Ferndale is magical. School children decorate Main St. trees and fire dept. volunteers hang lights on America’s tallest living Christmas tree. Full of surprises, The Victorian Village deserves more than a day to discover. It’s a beautiful drive up CA Highway 101. Take the Fernbridge/ Ferndale exit, cross historic Fernbridge and drive five pastoral miles to Main Street. pher’s paradise and a shopper’s delight. Explore the old-fashioned mercantiles, antique stores, art galleries, and specialty shops, and talk with the friendly people. Watch fresh candy being dipped by hand to whet your appetite for dinner. Resting by the fire in your elegant inn, think about tomorrow: a pedal around town, coast walk, Russ Park hike, boat tour of the Eel River Delta, museums, an evening of theatre: leisurely time filled with friendly, old-fashioned service. The Victorian village has been called a fairytale, but Ferndale is a working, all-American town that takes pride in its cultural heritage. The old way of life has not been compromised. In the late 1800s Ferndale was an agricultural/ transportation center, a melting pot for immigrants: Scandinavian, Swiss-Italian, Portuguese. The entire village is CA Historical Landmark #883. There’s nothing stodgy in this small town, though; Ferndale loves to have fun! The cradle of the wild and whacky Kinetic Sculpture Race, Ferndale continues to host the finish of this off-beat 3-day art event. The village is home to many colorful activities: Foggy Bottoms Milk Run, Tour of the Unknown Coast, Portuguese Holy Ghost Celebration, Humboldt County Fair, Bargain Lovers’ Weekend, and the Christmas Lighted Tractor Parade, to name just a few. “This was perhaps our perfect vacation— surrounded by a stunning natural setting from the Lost Coast to the big trees, a walkable city, excellent food, comfortable and attractive lodging—and we felt like the only tourists in town.” “We visited the museum and were impressed with the dioramas and the machine shop. We even stopped by the public library, chatted with the librarian, and practiced using the card catalogue. We also caught a kids’ baseball practice during a late afternoon walk. Whatever you folks are doing to keep all this going, please keep doing it.” —Chris Kirk-Kuwaye, Hawaii VictorianFerndale.com 200352 SA S U N DAY, J U LY 3 1 , 2 0 1 1 B2 ADVERTISING FEATURE B3 S U N DAY, J U LY 3 1 , 2 0 1 1 Have the world’s tallest trees all to yourself HUMBOLDT SPOTLIGHT S ure, you can drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and see a few nice redwoods, all the while bumping into hordes of fellow San Franciscans and over-stressed vacationers. But for a more peaceful and aweinspiring redwood encounter, consider visiting the Avenue of the Giants and Redwood National Park a few hours to the north, where with nary another soul nearby one can walk among the world’s tallest living things. Redwoods grow from Big Sur to the Oregon border, but only on Northern California’s Redwood Coast do they achieve their primeval glory. Untouched groves stagger the senses with their size, but are surprisingly easy to access. Humboldt County, home to the tallest and largest stands of old growth redwoods, offers the best scenic drives and trails to experience these giants. In fact, half the world’s virgin redwoods are in our two park systems, Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park. The latter is home to the world’s tallest tree, a whopper named Hyperion that stands six stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. To many, a redwood grove is a natural cathedral. There is a sense of peace and reverence as you walk among the pillars of trees and aisles of ferns, while sunlight filters through the canopy as if through stained glass. People come from all over the world to make the pilgrimage. They find that the trees are only the beginning of a Northern California adventure. After rambling through the groves, you can retreat to the Victorian seaports and old fishing villages like Eureka and Trinidad; perfect settings for art, food and wine discoveries. Humboldt County would be more than happy to share the same wonders with our “southern” California neighbors in the Bay Area. The fresh air, wide open forests and relaxed rural lifestyle are sure to seduce. And yes, you can drive your car through a living tree. In fact, there are three of them along Highway 101 either in or near Humboldt County. Here are some suggested big tree attractions to further entice. The Avenue of the Giants is quite simply the best place to view redwoods from the road. This 31-mile road, about an hour south of Eureka, winds through series after series of impressive old growth groves. It parallels Highway 101 and offers a memorable alternate drive as you enter Humboldt County from the south. Flat with gentle curves, the road passes by small towns, campgrounds and plenty of redwood and river trails. Notable stops include the Dyerville Giant, perhaps the world’s tallest tree when it toppled to the ground 20 years ago; the Rockefeller Forest, the largest single stand of virgin redwoods at 10,000 acres; and the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree. In Redwood National Park, about an hour north of Eureka, the Lady Bird Johnson Grove is a sublime redwood experience that includes an easy two-mile loop, ushering you past towering old growth redwoods, fern-covered glades and goose pens; large natural cavities inside the trees, which over the years have sheltered everything from domestic fowl to livestock to people. President Johnson dedicated the grove when the park was created in 1968. Also in Redwood National Park, the Newton Drury Parkway rivals the Avenue of the Giants for scenic old growth splendor. Stop at Big Tree and the Corkscrew Tree, or take a short detour to Fern Canyon, a prehistoric gorge with sheer walls draped in rare and beautiful cryptogamous plants. Along the way, keep your eyes open for half-ton Roosevelt elk grazing in the meadows, including in front of the Prairie Creek Visitor Center. Want more? There’s plenty including Willow Creek, the Bigfoot capital; Ferndale, California’s best preserved Victorian town; and the Lost Coast, the lower 48’s longest stretch of undeveloped beaches. HIMALAYAN RUG TRADERS H imalayan Rug Trader owners Joanna and Julie first discovered Tibetan rugs 18 years ago while on vacation trekking in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal. The Tibetans have been weaving traditional rugs in Nepal since the 1960’s with the wool from the sheep of the Himalayas. The rugs are hand-knotted on an upright loom and have 100 knots per square inch. The longer you walk on a Tibetan rug the tighter the knots become, making the rug stronger over time and normally lasting 80 to 100 years. The variety makes the Tibetan rugs of today appealing to a wide range of tastes. The winery is located 1,500 feet from the Pacific about 40 feet above sea level. So close to the ocean, temperatures remain cool throughout the year resulting in the perfect conditions for wine making and aging. These cooler temperatures during fermentation allow for greater extraction of aromatics and flavors from the skins of the grapes, resulting in richer, more distinctive wines. We cannot grow our own grapes, so we get to choose from the many unusual vari- etals. We hope that in your travels to Humboldt County, you will visit our beautiful coast and our scenic village of Trinidad. The Moonstone Crossing Wine Tasting Room is located in the center of Trinidad at 529 Trinity St. just before the Memorial Lighthouse. We offer tastings on our 33 award-winning varietals and blends. Our 10 acre estate vineyard and winery is located 1,200 above the ancient redwoods in southern Humboldt County. Our vines produce small yields of small grapes with intense flavors and soft tannins. Warm days and cool nights with a kiss of fog rising from the Eel River below help create the magic. Currently producing fewer than 700 cases per year, we truly handcraft our wines starting with slow fermentations in small half-ton macro bins located outdoors in the shade of the winery. Extensively photographed and published, this venerable Victorian, an icon, 32-room redwood Queen Anne architectural treasure, continues to be recognized today by travelers and preservationists from around the world. Built in 1899, to serve as the residence of Norwegian physician, Dr. Hogan J. Ring, it was not until the mid-1980s that Ken Torbert transformed the three-storey “drama queen” into an award-winning, “Select Registry” Bed and Breakfast Inn. Over the subsequent three decades, The Gingerbread Mansion increasingly gained international acclaim as Northern California’s most celebrated boutique hospitality inn — a destination unto itself, a place to experience genuine English B&B traditions and a much-sought-after venue for weddings and other festive celebrations. Multi-course gourmet breakfasts, relaxing afternoon teas, elaborate antique furnishings and an adjoining formal English Garden all served to distinguish this high-end, Humboldt County B&B in the eyes of the world. Now bank-owned and with an asking price far below market value, the elevensuite, approximately 8,544 square foot B&B commands two prime Village parcels and is to be sold fully furnished. The value of the inn’s personal property — including its many antiques — has been estimated even in today’s market at $200,000-$400,000. apr.com/johanna • (925) 708-4505 Historic Humboldt County Drama Queen!
