LET’S GET LOCAL 2013 Farm Tour Series Meet Humboldt’s Producers UC Coopera ve Extension‐Humboldt is offering an opportunity for you and your family to learn more about where our local food, wood and power come from. This tour series will visit farmers and managers of local oyster, beef, dairy, vegetable, redwood, and manufacturing facili es. Don’t miss this rare chance to visit local farms and learn what makes our region so special. Join us for one tour or for the whole series. Oysters – June 11, Tuesday, 8‐9:30am On the low de, we’ll cruise aboard the Madaket to see how oysters are grown in Humboldt Bay with local producer Greg Dale. Space is limited. No charge. Grass‐fed Beef – July 12, Friday, 4‐5:30pm, Ferndale We’ll visit Jay Russ, a fi h genera on rancher, who will provide a tour of his grass‐fed beef opera on. Cheese – August 3, Saturday, 10am ‐12pm, Loleta See local milk turned into unique value‐added cheese on a tour of the Loleta Cheese Factory. Veggies and Wine Grapes – August 11, Sunday 3‐5pm We’ll visit a well‐known Pepperwood vegetable farmer, Flood Plain Produce, at our first stop and then travel to Rosina Vineyards for a tour of vines and wines. Redwood Forest – September 21, Saturday, 10am‐12pm, Blue Lake Join us for a hike through Pete Bussman’s redwood forest and discuss his secrets to forest management. Redwood Mill – September 25, Wednesday, 10am‐12pm, Sco a Our region is known for its redwood. Join us on the journey of the transforma on of a log to a board. Children must be over 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. Dairy – October 1, Tuesday, 1:30‐3:30pm, Ferndale Bancrest Dairy will share their extensive knowledge in dairy farming on Ferndale pastures for over 90 years. Biomass Power – October 2, Wednesday 2pm‐4pm, Samoa Half of our energy produc on is from burning wood waste. Tour this facility to see how it’s done. Children must be over 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. Apples – October 12, Saturday, 1‐3pm, Fortuna Tour the orchard at the peak of harvest at Clendenen’s Cider Works, marking their 104th season. See how they make the best fresh apple cider! Pre‐registra on is required for all events. These tours are free, but space is limited.
