Getting here
ROAD: Charters Towers is a comfortable 90minute drive south-west of Townsville on the
Flinders Highway (A6). It is easily accessible to
travellers by car and coach via services from
Townsville and Mount Isa. As well as this eastwest route, Charters Towers also provides access
to Greenvale in the north and Clermont to the
south along the sealed Gregory Developmental
Road.

with twice weekly rail connections on the Inlander
train, which runs from Townsville to Mount Isa.

To make the most out of your visit we suggest a stay of at least three days is
necessary to explore the city’s rich heritage and surrounding countryside.
GOLD, GREED, GHOSTS AND
GRANDEUR – CHARTERS TOWERS
Situated just 90 minutes south-west of
Townsville, ‘The World’ as it’s affectionately
known, is a scenic gold mining city that’s
big on history and character. From a chance
discovery of gold in 1872 by a young Aboriginal
horse boy, Charters Towers soon turned into
a bustling metropolis, which in its heyday
boasted being the second largest city in
Queensland!
So large was Charters Towers to become,
that at the height of the gold rush the town
included 11 crushing mills, 65 hotels and one
of the very first regional Stock Exchanges in
Australia, which still stands proudly at the
intersection of Gill and Mosman streets.
HERITAGE CITY
Today the pace is a little less hectic, with
visitors able to explore the rich heritage of
Charters Towers in their own time. From a
quick stop over to a charming day trip or a
leisurely couple of days taking in the sights,
Charters Towers offers something for every
visitor and every interest.
Of course your first stop should be the Visitor
Information Centre on Mosman Street, housed
in what was once the Union Bank, built in 1880,
and staffed with local volunteers who are more
than happy to point you towards sights of
interest and help with accommodation ranging
from hotels to motels, caravan parks and
budget accommodation. To get a feel of the
city pick up a Heritage Walking Map from the
Visitor Information Centre and walk the One
Square Mile. This is a comfortable stroll which
takes in the best of the city’s heritage listed
architecture, like the World Theatre, City Hall
and the Post Office.
Although mining continues to be an important
part of life in Charters Towers, the oldfashioned crushers have long laid silent.
But links to the glory days of mining can
still be explored by joining the Ghosts of
Gold Heritage Trail, which includes a trip to

Australia’s largest surviving battery relic, the
Venus Gold Battery.
But not all of Charters Towers’ past is
golden. Once a significant allied military
base in World War II, a drive up Towers
Hill plays testament to this with some
30 concrete bunkers dotted throughout
the surrounding hills still visible to this
day. A look at the City Hall World War II
photographic display and the incredible
collection of military memorabilia at the
Zara Clark Museum is a must. And a trip
to the Burdekin Weir shows where target
shooting with the planes took place.
AROUND THE WORLD
There is also a lot to offer visitors
a little further out of town. An area
spanning the size of Tasmania, this
hive of agricultural activity gives
visitors the chance to discover the
rural side of life in the outback.
Stay on a working cattle station or
visit the weekly cattle sales at the
Dalrymple cattle saleyards.
An easy way to explore this vast
area is to take yourself on a self-guided drive.
There are five to choose from – Explorers,
Heritage, Geological, Desert Uplands or
Tropical. Ask for a more detailed information
brochure at the Information Centre. Mining,
history and good old-fashioned country
hospitality – it’s what Charters Towers is all
about. A city with a big past. Discover it today!
But just make sure you pick up plenty of
postcards, because once you’ve seen this slice
of the west, you’re sure to have plenty to write
home about!

The Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail explores life on the
Charters Towers goldfields. Stories of the characters
who brought Charters Towers from its humble
beginnings to become a thriving and very wealthy city,
are relived at various sites around the city.
The trail follows the discovery of Gold at the foot of
Towers Hill, the Greed in the hearts of those trying to
win it big at the Stock Exchange, the Grandeur of the
historic One Square Mile and if you listen carefully,
you’ll hear the Ghosts hard at work down at the Venus
Gold Battery.
GOLD – TOWERS HILL
An Aboriginal horse boy named Jupiter first discovered gold at
the foot of Towers Hill in December 1871. Since the discovery
of gold, the hill’s three peaks have been subject to much use,
such as a mining site, the early telegraph route to Cardwell
passed overhead and the valley below was used for ordinance
storage during World War II. Towers Hill Lookout also has many
interesting and factual storyboards, so you can learn about the
region’s colourful past whilst taking in the panoramic scenery
of Charters Towers. It is a peaceful spot for an early morning or
late afternoon walk and you may see some wildlife along the
way. Towers Hill comes to life in the evening with a film screened
in the Amphitheatre – called Ghosts after Dark. As this film
suggests, the ghosts of our past have a starring role.
The arcade is a great open thoroughfare and it is
easy to imagine the stockbrokers busy at work in
their offices. Don’t miss the “calling of the card”,
a ghostly reminder of Charters Towers’ golden
days when just a touch of greed echoed in these
stately walls.
GHOSTS – VENUS GOLD
BATTERY
Located on the outskirts of the city, the Venus
Gold Battery offers an insight into the city’s
incredible real-life gold rush of the late 19th
century. The battery is of national cultural
significance as the largest surviving battery
relic in Australia and oldest surviving battery in
Queensland.
Constructed in 1872, it was a public or custom
mill in its heyday and became a State Battery
in 1919 to provide ore crushing facilities for
small miners long after other mills had closed.
It ceased commercial operations in 1973 after a
century of service.
Guided tours are available daily at the battery,
with one of the highlights being a holographic
film presentation that shows the process of
extracting gold from ore and the story of the
battery’s working life. Come and meet the ghost
of Mr E.H.T. Plant, who built the battery. He has
some interesting tales to tell of some of the
ghosts you may just meet at the other sites
around town.
GREED – STOCK EXCHANGE
The arcade was designed by Sydney architect
Mark Day and built by the Sandbrook Brothers
of Sydney in 1888. This prestigious shop and
office arcade was built for local civic leader and
businessman Alexander Malcolm. Known then
as the Royal Arcade, it housed the Charters
Towers Stock Exchange from 1890. It was one of
Australia’s first few regional stock exchanges and
needed to raise capital for the deep reef mines
throughout the region. The Stock Exchange was
hooked into the world via telegraph, with three
calls a day, six days a week.

ONE SQUARE MILE
There are few historic city hearts as beautifully
preserved as Charters Towers’ One Square
Mile. During the late 1800s, the money made
on the Stock Exchange flowed into the civic
improvements and a flourishing
business community.
The newly rich citizens
built palatial homes
and magnificent
buildings and the town
puffed out its chest with
great civic pride. The
elegance of the city heart
is always a talking point
for visitors. Best of all, this
historic One Square Mile
precinct is easily explored
on foot using the Heritage
Walking Map. Ask for a copy
at the Information Centre.
CIVIC CLUB
Drop into the Civic Club and enjoy a drink
with a local, soak up the atmosphere of this
historic building and play a round of billiards
on one of the two 100-year-old tables.
Formerly “The Londoner’s Club” (gentlemen only
please), it is now open to all. Don’t forget to
make your booking for
their famous Friday night
barbecue – this is the only
time meals are available
here.
THE MINER’S
COTTAGE
You will find this mini
museum offering an
experience set back
in time located right
in the city heart.
The cottage has
been refurbished
and decorated to show how the
house would have looked at the start of the
20th Century. Panning for real gold is great fun
for children and adults alike and you are able to
do just that at The Miner’s Cottage. A free cup of
tea or coffee awaits you on arrival. Tickets can be
purchased at the Visitor Information Centre.

ZARA CLARK MUSEUM
WORLD THEATRE
Built in 1891, the World Theatre was originally the
Australian Bank of Commerce. Its name derives
from when Charters Towers was the second
largest city in Queensland and was affectionately
referred to as “The World”. The building was
converted in 1996 into a 660-seat performing
arts theatre, two cinemas, restaurant, gift shop
and public art gallery. It is here in 1902, that the
Mosman Street Tragedy took place. Take a guided
tour and learn more. Check with the friendly
staff for details of the live shows, movie times,
morning melodies and the local and touring
exhibitions of art, sculpture, photography and
more.
HISTORIC AMBULANCE
CENTRE
This centre dates back to 1903 and was the
first ambulance station outside Brisbane and
covered a working area of almost 70,000 sq kms
(approximately the size of Tasmania). Here
visitors can view a wonderful collection of old
vehicles, uniforms and an enormous number
of logbooks recording the cases treated by
ambulance officers during the past 100 years. The
centre is open on Sundays and at other times by
appointment.
ASSAY ROOM AND MINING
MUSEUM
The restored Assay Room, located at the rear of
the Stock Exchange Arcade, was set up under the
direction of Mr John Banks, Inspector of Mines of
the Charters Towers district from 1950 – 1972.
It contains equipment used in the assay rooms of
the late 19th and early 20th centuries to analyse
the quality of the gold contained within the ore
brought up from the deep vein mines below and
around the city of Charters Towers.
There are also mining artefacts such as a wash
cradle, giant bellows, bullion moulds, gold pans
and a miner’s helmet dating back to the same
era. Some of the items were borrowed as props
for the Australian War movie “Beneath Hill 60 –
the silent war”, which told the story of Captain
Woodward of the 1st Australian Tunneling Division
on the Western Front. As well, there are two
dioramas depicting a crushing plant and a mine.
This National Trust owned museum houses a
large collection of photographs, equipment
and other memorabilia that reflect Charters
Towers’ golden past. Friendly volunteers are
only too willing to share their special stories
and demonstrate some of the equipment that is
housed in the historic Burns Philp building, built
in 1888. Ask for a demonstration of the flying fox
(the Lampson Aerial Cash System from the old
Pollards building). This is always a favourite. One
of the most heard statements from the visitors to
the Zara Clark Museum is “Oh I remember that!”
The collection is full of items guaranteed to bring
back a lovely memory or two. Apart from these
items there are other artefacts that will pull you
into the drama and excitement that was Charters
Towers 130 odd years ago.

Towers, has the largest herd of purebred Texas
Longhorns in Australia. Meet JR, a record holding
steer with the world’s longest horns measuring
277cm from tip to tip. Learn some of the history
of these iconic “wild west” cattle while listening
to the clip of the hooves, the clink of the harness
and the rhythm of the canvas covered wagon.

giant” draft horses are being harnessed and

Keep it for an hour or a week and visit historic
sites you would not find on your own while

PIONEER CEMETERY
The Pioneer Cemetery contains graves of those
buried from 1872 – 1895 and gives insight
into the hardships our pioneers faced during
the goldfield days. Cemetery records for both
cemeteries are available
for viewing at the Visitor
Information Centre.

check out the flood water heights of the mighty
Burdekin River. You will be amazed.

HISTORY ASSOCIATION
The Association promotes and preserves
research into local and family history. The group
has an extensive collection of local history
records and copies of the newspapers that have
served readers over the decades including The
Northern Miner (1874-1996), The Ravenswood
Miner (1871-74), The Eagle and New Eagle (18931906) and Towers Herald (1877-1893). They are
located at 52 Towers Street.
EXCELSIOR LIBRARY
Browse through the restored Excelsior Library,
formerly the Excelsior Hotel which burnt down in
1995. This fully air-conditioned building is also
home to the Charters Towers and Dalrymple
Archives Group. It is an active group continually
gathering and uncovering the golden past of
our city. If you have stories to share or need a
mystery solved, this is the place for you. The
Library is also home to the Excelsior Brass Band
and the beginnings of the city’s art collection.

The photographic display is
in the foyer of the City Hall
and is open for viewing during
business hours. This exhibit
captured the activities that took
place at the Charters Towers
Aerodrome and the Breddan
Airstrip during WWII.
CITY MURALS
Discover some of Charters Towers’ local works
of art at various places around town. By far the
largest mural is visible at the Arthur Titley Centre,
but you can easily explore the others at the Civic
Club, Centenary Park and Westpac Bank.

Discover some of our city’s characters – Zelia

through sculpture and follow the trail made
possible by some very talented local artists. In
all, 18 sculptures were created and you can view

EARLY BIRDS – TOWERS
HILL WALK
Early morning is the best time to discover the
wildlife living in and around Towers Hill. You’ll see
several species of macropods such as the Eastern
Grey kangaroo, the Whiptail and Allied Rock
wallabies. Watch as the
Wedge-tailed eagles hunt
their prey. This is also a
favourite exercise track
for locals. Look for the
gold discovery monument
at the base of the hill.
Follow the road and
uncover the stories
from the informative
storyboards along the
way. There’s “Jupiter’s
Luck”, the “Seismograph
Station”, and “Clark’s
Gold Mine”. Wander
through the Landcare
rehabilitation project at
the base of the hill to the
right. Discover the WWII bunkers; there are 30 of
them in total. A short walk to a restored bunker is
sign posted half way up the hill on the right. On
arrival at the summit take time to enjoy the view
as Charters Towers awakens. There are picnic
tables available for your BYO breakfast. Another
track at the summit leads off to the ruins of the
Pyrites Works.
DRIVE-IN CINEMA
Watch a couple of flicks at our local DriveIn Cinema – one of only six still operating
in Queensland. The Drive-In operates on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday most of the year.
Check screening programmes with the Visitor
Information Centre.
CATTLE SALES
Experience the thrill of livestock going under the
hammer. Cattle sales are held every Wednesday
at the Dalrymple Saleyards. Beef is produced
on 250 commercial properties that run some
600,000 head of cattle. The saleyards sell around
85,000 head per annum of store and prime
cattle and host North
Queensland’s premier
bull and horse sales.

Charters Towers offers
a unique shopping
experience where bargain
hunters can find a special or two or uncover a
hidden treasure amongst the arts and crafts
shops, antique and secondhand stores. The
shopping strip is special too as it is still a country
experience with many locally owned shops
providing good old country service with a smile.

GALLERY
Located in the Stock Exchange Arcade, the gallery
holds regular exhibitions displaying items created
by exceptionally talented local and regional
artists. Check at the Visitor Information Centre for
the dates of the next exhibition.

Explore Centenary Park with the Gold Discovery
Monument, which features a collection of
sculptures by Queensland artist Hugh Anderson.
The park has had many uses during the past
century including a baseball field during WWII
and soon after it became the birthplace of the
Goldfield Ashes Cricket Carnival. The park is a
haven for many bird species, particularly parrots
and figbirds. Picnic tables and gas barbecues are
available and it is always cool and shady.
BURDEKIN WEIR
Take a drive out to the Burdekin Weir. This is
the source of our liquid gold – water. You will
enjoy the sights and sounds of the mighty
Burdekin River — the fourth largest Australian
river by volume flow. The city’s water supply is
pumped from the weir to the reservoir on Towers
Hill. There is a large picnic area with barbecue
facilities (wood fired). If you prefer a spot of
fishing turn off to the left before the picnic area
and travel approximately 1km to the Burdekin
Weir Water Park. It is a well-known location
for birdwatching. Look out for cormorants and
other waterfowl such as ducks and darters.
The surrounding woodland supports a range
of smaller birds such as the Rufous-throated
honeyeater.
EDMEADES PARK
Take time out to visit the smallest park in the
city, nestled between City Hall and the former
Commonwealth Bank of Australia (now a
Chinese restaurant) in Mosman Street. You will
be greeted by the wafting perfume of the rose
garden as you enter this cool, tropical oasis. The
park is named after Dr Thomas Roy Edmeades
MB, BS, a former medical practitioner who
served the people of Charters Towers from
23 January 1916 to 1 January 1971. The park has
plenty of shade and a picnic table. Other
plaques displayed include one commemorating
the 5th Air Force – United States Army Air
Corps’ presence during WWII from 9 March
1942 to 11 November 1943, and another to the
establishment of the Charters Towers District
Australian Labour Federation (ALF) in 1891.
DEFIANCE MILL PARK
Defiance Mill Park has something for the
whole family, with a concrete skate park for
skateboards, bikes, scooters and roller blades.
There is also a 1/3 basketball court with full sized
ring. The park has a large oval walking track with
exercise stations spaced out around the circuit.
Next to the walking track is a dirt BMX track.
The park is partially shaded and there are picnic
tables and seating. There is off-street parking,
public toilets, a nearby supermarket and tennis
courts for hire across the road.
Lissner Park is a 7ha reserve first gazetted for
public recreation purposes in 1883. It was the
city’s first initiative to compensate for the impact
of mining. The park is almost rectangular and
bordered by Anne, Church, Deane and Plummer
streets. At the Anne Street end is a memorial
to Jupiter Mosman, who locals credit with the
discovery of gold in 1871. Towards the centre
of the park is the Commonwealth Fountain
and adjacent to it a pair of restored WWI
guns. The Boer War Veterans Memorial Kiosk
commemorates the 82 Charters Towers men who
enlisted and went to South Africa between 1899
and 1901. Nearby are the Band Rotunda, children’s
playground, duck pond and a memorial to grazier
and pioneer William Hann. Lissner Park is well
lit and perfect for evening picnics. It has picnic
tables, gas barbecues and is always cool and
shady. A Yarning Circle was constructed in 2009.

The Charters Towers Museum (c. 1883) is housed in a late nineteenth
century commercial building. Gold was discovered in 1872 to make Charters
Towers home to one of Australia’s richest goldfields. The museum contains
items pertaining to the history of Charters Towers. The large collection
includes transport vehicles, documents and domestic items.
Of special interest is the recently refurbished Military Section. Foyer
displays change regularly to depict the different lifestyles of the old
goldmining district.

Charters Towers is the country
music capital during late April
and early May every year with
the staging of three major events
which all feature a healthy country
music flavour.
These three distinctly different events – the All
Australian Jamboree, Ten Days in the Towers and
the Charters Towers Country Music
Festival – bring thousands of visitors to
the town. The streets and shops take
on a country music flavour, buskers
are common place in the street
and performers as young as
five-years-old dress up to impress
judges as they take centre stage
to show off the results of
their months of practice
and rehearsals.
The Charters Towers Country Music Festival is the
largest amateur country music talent quest
in Australia, attracting as many as 600
contestants each year. The festival starts
with a parade through the heritage
streets of the town which finishes

BURDEKIN FALLS DAM
Located around 80km south of
Ravenswood lies one of Queensland’s
largest lakes, Lake Dalrymple, which is
four times the size of Sydney Harbour.
The Burdekin Falls Dam was constructed across
the Burdekin River in 1987 for irrigation purposes.
The lake has a surface area of 22,400 hectares,
an average depth of 8.3 metres and holds
1,860,000 megalitres of water at full capacity.
In the wet season it is not unusual for the dam
to overflow sending thousands of megalitres of
water on its way down the river to the sea.
The dam’s construction was the culmination of
almost 100 years of public lobbying and election
promises.
The Lake is a popular destination for fishing
and water sports enthusiasts. A Stocked
Impoundment Permit (SIP) is required to fish
Lake Dalrymple/Burdekin Falls Dam. These
are available at Cunningham’s Newsagency in
Charters Towers. Lake Dalrymple is open to all
boating activities and no restrictions apply. A
concrete boat ramp is provided.
Camping is not permitted on the lake but a well
serviced camping area with showers, toilets,
laundry and powered sites is available. A “first in
best dressed” policy applies and a ranger collects
camping fees. There is no fuel or shopping
facilities.
A road crossing the river at the bottom of the
dam wall can only be used when water is not
flowing over the spillway. The road will eventually
take you to the coast.
It was naturalist and explorer Ludwig Leichhardt
who first named the Burdekin River after his
benefactor Mary Ann Burdekin (nee Bossley),
who provided considerable financial support for
the 1844-45 expedition to northern Australia.

following down the Suttor River Leichhardt came
to and named the Burdekin River. He followed
this river northwards and on April 10 he camped
close to where the Macrossan Bridge stands
today.
Look for the monument to Leichhardt at the dam.
On October 1, 1844, the exploring expedition led
by Leichhardt left Jimba Station near Dalby on a
journey to Port Essington near where Darwin is
today. When leaving Jimba, the party consisted
of 10 men: John Gilbert, James Calvert, John
Roper, John Murphy, William Phillips, Pemberton
Hodgson, Caleb an American Negro, two
Australian Aboriginals Harry Brown and Charlie,

one hour’s drive east
of Charters Towers.

heritage listed gold mining
town of Ravenswood. The gold
rush was on in 1868 when two
discoveries were made, one
by Marmaduke Curr, a cattle
station owner, and the other
by stockman Thomas Aitken.
The town of Ravenswood was
born and along with it
many public buildings were
hurriedly erected to take
advantage of the newly
found riches of the gold
miners. Forty-eight hotels and
shanties served to quench
the thirst of the miners.
Today two hotels remain
as magnificent examples
of the prosperity of this
town’s wealthy beginnings.
As mining declined, the tiny
town survived, relying on the
surrounding cattle properties.

A new lease of life for the town came about in 1995 when the
population of 100 locals was boosted by the arrival of some
300 miners to once again reap the rewards gold mining has to
offer.
The town boasts excellent facilities including a tennis court,
golf course, barbecue and picnic area near the Showgrounds
Caravan Park — pets allowed if on a lead.
The historic Court House Museum is open each day between
11am and 1pm. A small admission fee applies. The museum
volunteer is always keen to share stories of the golden days
of Ravenswood. Maps and historical books are available for
sale. There are a number of self-guided walks so don’t forget to
get your map from the museum before you set off
exploring the old chimney stacks, mullock heaps,
School of Arts Hall, the old church on the hill, the
cemetery and more. The museum is also the place
to trace family history with comprehensive records
available along with a collection of newspaper
clippings.
Visit the open cut gold mine lookout to view the
pit where giant trucks and machinery once worked.
An amazing sight. Turn off to the right just out of
town on the road to Ayr past the showgrounds.
A little further down the road White Blow
Environmental Park (5 kilometres from the town
centre) features a large white quartz rock outcrop
that dates back some 300-million years.

Grass Hut Station, just 7km south of Mingela.
You can stay overnight, or as long as you wish to
be involved with everyday station life activities.
There are regular musters, branding calves,
working dog demonstrations, as well as property
tours, bushwalking tracks and gold fossicking
areas. Take a break from the cooking and enjoy
hearty station meals with family and staff, or tell
some yarns with damper and billy tea around the
warmth of a campfire.
HIDDEN VALLEY

Accessed via Herveys Range Road north of the
Towers, Hidden Valley is located in the Paluma
Ranges. Accommodation is available at Hidden
Valley Cabins and their individual log cabins
are surrounded with a wide selection of native
fauna to attract the local birds and wildlife. They
are built from all local timber; even the beds
and bedroom furniture were built from local red
mahogany. While you’re in the area, take a walk to
Running River. There have been over 130 species
of birds sighted in the Hidden Valley area. The
climate is another great feature. It is usually eight
degrees cooler than the coast in summer – the
ideal place to sit by woodfires in the winter.

Take a coffee break with a difference at the
oldest known building in North Queensland. This
historic split log inn was the stopping place for
bullock teams and Cobb & Co Coaches. Enjoy

range and across to the islands off Townsville.

Located 220km south of Charters Towers on the
A7 (Gregory Developmental Road). The roadhouse
is located at Belyando Crossing and offers a
shady picnic area to customers passing through.
Fish for redclaw in the local creeks. Camp the
night and marvel at the stars. Visit the historic
grave site. Nearby Lake Buchanan is a large, flat,
salt lake approximately 28km long and 8km wide
at its widest point, with a surface area of about
117sq km. Lake Buchanan is different from all
other salt lakes in Australia because it occurs at a
high elevation – on the Great Dividing Range.
BLUEWATER SPRINGS

Located 110km NE of Charters Towers on the
Lynd Highway, Bluewater Springs Roadhouse
is approximately 10km past the Hervey’s Range
Road turnoff travelling north. The nice shady
garden is the perfect place to stop for a coffee.
They are licensed to supply alcohol with meals.
Greenvale is a nickel mining settlement located
on the banks of the Burdekin River approximately
200km north of Charters Towers on the Gregory
Developmental Road.
An ore-carrying rail line ran between Greenvale
and Townsville from 1974 to 1993. Some of the
longest trains in Australia were pulled along this
track. The railway line was removed in mid 2000,
but the easement remains. Despite the fact the
original mine has concluded operations, more
mining operations around the area have started.
Greenvale’s population is approximately 150
people, however, when the nickel mine was in
operation, its population was about 3000 people.
The Three Rivers Hotel, made famous by Slim
Dusty in a song of the same name, is located at
Greenvale, although the original was no more
than a tin shed on the banks of the river. There
is also a nine-hole golf course. Birdwatching
abounds. Fossicking for gems is permitted with a
licence and landowners’ permission to enter.
In May each year the Annual Greenvale Campdraft
is in full swing, in August Greenvale hosts the
Annual Golf Championships and the Father’s Day
Billy Cart Races are loads of fun.
It’s not often that a local hotel is the
inspiration for a famous song by an
equally famous Australian.
The late Slim Dusty sang about his favourite
watering hole, the Three Rivers Hotel, in a song of
the same name which was penned by Sam Coster.
Some locals argue that it is the unique character
of the area that inspired the
song. Others say it was the
atmosphere of the original
hotel, where great yarns
about the outback way of
life were spun.
Whatever the true story
is, the folklore behind
Slim Dusty and his love for
the Greenvale district is
legendary. It is this character
that attracts visitors, along
with the history of the area,
its outback attractions,
amenities and local crafts.
You too can enjoy the charm of this outback
oasis.
Created during the boom mining era of the early
1970s, Greenvale was once the largest nickel mine
in the southern hemisphere. Despite the fact that
the original mine has ceased operation, more
mining around the area has since commenced
and nickel and other metal ores are still mined in
the region.
Greenvale is located on the Gregory
Developmental Road and not far from the
mighty Burdekin River. An ore carrying railway
line ran between Greenvale and Queensland
Nickel Industries in Townsville from 1974 to 1993.

transported in massive road
trains measuring up to 55
metres in length.
The population of Greenvale
today is approximately 150.
However, when the original

Greenvale offers a destination full of colour. Its
golden sunsets, the glorious flora and fauna, its
history and its colourful characters are all part of
the friendly atmosphere in this part of country
outback Australia.

This tiny township is located 50km NE of Charters
Towers on the Flinders Highway. Drop into the
Mingela Hotel, a quintessential outback pub,
complete with cat and peacocks. You will need
to turn into Mingela to continue your drive to
Ravenswood and the Burdekin Falls Dam.
BALFE’S CREEK

Balfe’s Creek was the original road and rail
junction for the basalt country further north.
Dairies in the area once supplied milk to Charters
Towers. Between Balfe’s Creek and Homestead is
the turnoff to Thalanga Copper Operations which
produces copper concentrate from surrounding
mining operations. There must be something
in the icy cold drinks at the local pub as there
is many a story of visitors sighting camels,
ostriches, goats and sheep, even after one drink!
Check out the beer can collection. Admire the
mural depicting the town’s history. Have a game
of pool or darts. Meet Tony the Tin Man. The kids
will love the playground and the animal farm.
HOMESTEAD

Gold was discovered to the north of Homestead
in 1883 and was mined intermittently for the
next 50 years. Two hotels, two butcher shops,
two stores, a bank and a cordial factory were
part of the town during the railway era. A sleeper
cutter sawmill operated here until 1970. Between
Homestead and Pentland are the remains of the

Gold was discovered on the nearby Cape River
in 1867 and attracted European and Chinese
gold miners. The railway established Pentland
in 1884, however being some miles from the
diggings caused most services to be relocated
to Pentland, including the old Norwood jail now
located off the highway at the Soldiers Memorial
Hall. Between Pentland and Torrens Creek is the
Burra Range Lookout. Look for the wildflowers
and wattle flowering in spring. Accommodation
is available at the Caravan Park or Pentland
Hotel Motel. Local arts and crafts are available
at the Pentland Art Gallery. Enjoy a dip in the
town pool. Groceries, gas and postal facilities
are at the General Store. Tennis, golf and cricket
available at the Pentland Sports Association and
birdwatchers should visit the wetlands behind
the town.

TORRENS CREEK

Torrens Creek has a long and interesting
history. The creek was discovered in 1862
by the explorer William Landsborough
whilst on an expedition in search of Burke
and Wills. It was named after Sir Robert
Torrens. In 1942 Torrens Creek was utilised
as an ammunition dump aiding the World
War II effort. Call in to hear the stories of how this
little town was almost blown away. While you’re
in the district, make sure you check out White
Mountains National Park, Burra Range Lookout
on the Overlander’s Way, Moorrinya National Park
and the Torrens Creek Exchange Hotel.

Prairie is surrounded by beautiful rolling plains of
Flinders grasses. In the 1870s, Prairie was a main
horse change centre for Cobb & Co Coaches. The
Great Northern Railway reached Prairie in 1887.
Call into the Prairie Hotel and take a look at the
collection of stockmen’s hats and other historical
memorabilia. Hear the story of the wandering
ringer; this ghostly prowler comes from a story
around the 1930s. Check out Prairie Hotel,
Kooroorinya Falls Nature Reserve, 35’ Comet
windmill, Koorooinya/Oakley Picnic Races and
Flinders River Byway 4WD tourist drive.

quite like Hughenden. Rich in fossil remains
and ancient landscapes, from rolling black soil
plains, to dramatic sandstone gorges capped with
volcanic basalt flows; Hughenden will amaze you
with its contrasting, ever changing beauty.

bush a special treat. Basalt walls rise out of the
black soil plains, offering visitors the perfect
vantage point from which they can feast their
eyes on Hughenden and surrounds.

Once, long ago, this country was part of a great
prehistoric inland sea. Muttaburrasaurus roamed
the land with Pterosaurs flying high above and

unearthed.
Supporting a rural area of more than 40,000sq

The new attraction in Richmond along the Heritage Walk
is the CAMBRIDGE DOWNS HERITAGE DISPLAY
CENTRE. This agstone replica is of the Cambridge
Downs Homestead that became a Store and Post
ofce in the late 1800s. The centre showcases items of
historical and cultural signicance including Aboriginal
artefacts, a fully restored Cobb & Co Coach and other
machinery from the pioneering days.
On display are marine fossils from the Crustaceous
period from 100-110 million years ago. Discover your
own fossil at one of the free fossil hunting grounds ask
staff at Kronosaurus Korner for a map or ask about one
IMPRESSIVE LAKE FRED TRITTON has free barbecues,
picnic tables, water park, playground and exercise park
which compliments the 1.2km walking path around its
circumference. Lake Fred Tritton is perfect for boating,
water skiing, jet skiing, shing, swimming and canoeing.
The lake is lit at night for barbecues and walking. Try
your luck at shing for that elusive barramundi or throw
in a crab pot for Redclaw.
