But it is also a region where human hands have created impressive urban landscapes, road networks or unique water reservoirs, a region that helps supply the entirety of east Slovakia with drinking water. From the northern slopes of Vihorlat in the south to the Poloniny Range in the north and from the eastern slopes of the westernly Slanské vrchy Range to the mountains at the Slovak-Ukrainian border in the east, the forests of the region offer a look at many rare and protected species of plants and animals. The clean, piercing air will refresh your mind and regenerate your body. It is not only tourists, untouched nature lovers, 8 waterside holidaymakers and vacationers that will find the region interesting – mushroom pickers, hunters and anglers will not be dis-appointed either, as well as those visitors that seek historical or technical sights and landmarks. One example of many is the phenomennon of forest railways – narrow-gauges, which once formed a common ambience of this geographic area, but had gradually closed down. Despite that, many of the railway routes leaving their mark in the local country in ways still visible today. Let us therefore start our journey for adventures in this land, where time flows as though it had stopped, where you can leave your stress behind and where – despite the efforts of people – genuine, essentially pure wilderness still dominates and reigns supreme... 9 Humenné Humenné, often referred to as the gateway to Upper Zemplín, lies in northeast Slovakia at the confluence of the Laborec and Cirocha Rivers, with an average altitude of 157 m. Geomorphologically, it is part of the Beskydian Piedmont. The town fulfills a bold vision of a modern urban area with quality conditions for the life of its citizens – with a good economic background, developed industries including construction works and power engineering, public services and transport, as well as a rich cultural, social and sporting life. The inhabitants of the town value the history, customs and traditions of their ancestors, as well as striving to leave their own mark in the existence of the town and the region. The town of Humenné evolved from an early Slavic settlement. However, the 10 location of Humenné was settled already around 1 100 BC, as evidenced by the discovery of artefacts such as bronze swords, hatchets and pendants. The banks of the Laborec and the surrounding hills continued to be inhabited at the start of the common era. A deposit of Celtic coins discovered in the village of Ptičie offers evidence of Celtic-Dacian peoples residing in the vicinity of the future town. The oldest surviving written records about Humenné were made in 1317, Humenné received its official town privileges in 1479. The dominant landmark of the town is its historical manor-house, built at the site of a medieval watercastle. Its history is tightly knit with the Drugeth family, a noble house of Neapolitan origin, that came to the territory of Slovakia with king Charles 11 2 4 1 3 Robert of Anjou. After 1684, the manor of Humenné switched ownership between the Zichy, Wandernáth, Csáky and later Andrássy noble families. The former Franciscan monastery, now a Roman-catholic parish church in the centre of town, is listed as a national cultural landmark of Slovakia. The church represents the easternmost gothic structure in Europe. Other features that might also capture your attention are the town’s reconstructed pedestrian zone with the Fountain of Love and the Stream of Time, the manor-house’s park with its collection of rare tree species and historical sculptures, as well as the centre of town with memorial dedicated to the fallen of the World War II, with the statue of St John of Nepomuk and with memorial of Milan Rastislav Štefánik. The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in classicistic style, accompanied by a 14 chapels of the Calvary, was constructed at the end of the 19th 12 1 The newly reconstructed southern part of Liberty Square (centre) 2 A look at the Humenné manorhouse with its courtyard and the adjoining Park of Peace 3 Church of Our Lady of Sorrows on the Calvary built in 1891 5 4 Park of Peace, home to rare tree species, in particular a specimen of Ginkgo Biloba 5 Wooden Temple of St Michael the Archangel from 1754 with baroque iconostas, moved from its original location in Nová Sedlica to the Humenné Open Air Museum 13 2 3 1 4 century. For the sport-inclined visitors, Humenné offers the town outskirts recreation resort on the banks of the Laborec River and the town’s main sports complex, containing the town lido (which also includes a tobogan and natatoria), sports arena, winter sports stadium and football (soccer) stadium. Humenné forms the natural urban centre of the region. Given its population (almost 35 000), the importance of the town to its vicinity is substantial. It is bolstered by the presence of important institutions of both state and local government, as well as institutions pertaining to culture, education, healthcare or tourism. p 14 1 2 Fountain of Love at the centre of the pedestrian zone, where the town’s inhabitants and visitors can rest and meet friends Traffic circle under the flyover/overpass 5 3 Nighttime view of the Stream of Time with its fountain 4 Hotel Alibaba 5 Statue of Jaroslav Hašek‘s “The Good Soldier Švejk“ at the Humenné railway station 15 Medzilaborce The first written record of Medzilaborce as a town comes from 1543, though the settlement did not carry town privileges at the time. A sawmill and two mills were founded in Medzilaborce in 1612, the first larger shops and inns appeared some 19 years later. The community only received official town status in 1860, concurrently becoming a centre for one of the more than 20 administrative districts within the County of Zemplín. A census conducted in the town in 1869 has offered insights into the composition of local surnames. Medzilaborce became a part of the railway network in 1873 (a noteworthy event was the stopover of emperor Franz Josef I eight years later, during his return trip from Galicia). Afp 16 ter the male line of succession of the Drugeth noble family had died out, the Csáky family became the new owners of the settlement since 1684, themselves later superceded by the Andrássy family during the 19th century, who also owned several estates around the town. A devastating fire in 1900 destroyed almost all of the town’s housing and much of its public buildings, with the exception of the Greek-catholic church. At the start of the 20th century, the town and its vicinity were almost completely lacking in industry and business, the level of schooling was also poor. Medzilaborce became the capital of the eponymous administrative district in 1910. Some of the more significant landmarks of the town include 17 2 4 1 3 the memorials to fallen soldiers of the World War I and II, the memorial to the Czech Company of World War I or the memorial to victims of the Holocaust. Today’s Medzilaborce represent the administrative, cultural and social centre of the local region, where a considerable part of the population is made up of the ethnic minorities of Ruthenians and Ukrainians. It is also one of the smallest districts in both the Prešov Self-governing Region and the country as a whole. The town’s vicinity offers good conditions for individual hiking and sightseeing trips, cycling and car trips, canoeing on the Laborec River or skiing. The local woods are rich on mushrooms, forest fruit and wild animals, the watercourses offer opportunities for fishing. 18 1 Statue of Andy Warhol 2 Traffic circle in the centre of Medzilaborce 3 Orthodox church from 1949 5 4 Miniatures Open Air Museum with replicas of a wooden church and traditional Ruthenian housing 5 Festival of Culture and Sports in the newly reconstructed amphitheatre 19 Snina The first written record about Snina is from 1343 and is connected to the process of the so-called Valachs colonization (it involved the settling of locations by countryfolk specializing primarily in pasturage). The settlement of Snina came into being alongside an important trade route from the Kingdom of Hungary to Galicia, leading along the Valley of the Cirocha River and through Ruské sedlo Valley. This route was known as the “Russian road“ – Porta Rusica. Since the first half of the 14th century, Snina belonged to the noble house of Drugeth. Around this time, the settlement received its first noble residence, then still a wooden structure. In the last third of the 18th century, countess Terézia Zichy 20 (van Dernáth) – the granddaughter of Žigmund Drugeth – oversaw the construction of a new, masoned manor-house at this site. After her death, her 5 sons sold Snina in 1799 – along with the not yet completely finished manor-house – to Jozef Rholl, a businessman from Gemer. His descendants did business in this region until 1857. During this relatively short span of time, in the Jozefova dolina Valley – the location of today’s village of Zemplínske Hámre – the Rholl family founded ironworks (in 1809) and a foundry (in 1841). This is where the casting of the wellknown statue of Hercules, adorning the courtyard of the manor-house in Snina, took place. Present day Snina is a district town with 20 000 in- 21 2 5 3 6 1 4 habitants, with newly reconstructed square, public buildings and with a comprehensively restored classicistic manor-house with an authentic, partially preserved English park. The old town’s cemetery includes the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows at the local Calvary and a Jewish cemetery. The chapel was constructed in 1842 and serves as the tomb of the Rholl family. A local urban cycling route, “Discovering the history of Snina“, offers a comprehensive presentation of the landmarks and monuments of Snina – including but not limited to: the original town square with the Romancatholic church from 1751, the war cemetery of epidemic victims or the remains of the former Snina Narrow-Gauge Railway. 22 1 Statue of Hercules in the courtyard of Snina’s manor-house 2 Fountain at the town square 3 Part of the reconstructed town square 4 Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows – the family tomb of the Rholls 7 5 Roman-catholic Church of the Promotion of the Holy Cross with Sninský kameň in the background 6 Historical park surrounding the manor-house 7 Classicistic manor-house in Snina built in 1781 23 Vranov nad Topľou From an originally small settlement (with the first written evidence dating to1270), Vranov nad Topľou gradually developed thanks to its favourable location into the present form of a modern town, but with various preserved and important cultural monuments. At the town’s centre, on the edge of the newly reconstructed town square, stands the late-gothic Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary, promoted to basilica minor in 2008. Alongside the church stands the monastery of the Paulines. Both structures underwent extensive rebuilding in the 18th century. Frescos, statues of saints or a precious baroque-rococo liturgi- 24 cal set have all been preserved to this day in the basilica. The main altar is decorated with a 17th century painting of the Merciful Virgin Mary, weeping bloody tears at the Calvary. In 2010, a replica of the original baroque sculptural group of Virgin Mary with baby Jesus and St John of Nepomuk was installed in the small park next to the basilica. The original statues, created in the second half of the 18th century by presumably Italian artists, are today located in the Roman-catholic Church of St Francis of Assisi. Another interesting landmark is the town’s old Jewish cemetery. Its oldest tombstones made from sandstone are 25 4 2 5 1 from the second half of the 18th century too. The town of Vranov nad Topľou, the capital of the eponymous district, today represents the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the region. The town has 23 000 inhabitants and has a cadastre area of 3 435 ha. Most of the production plants, banking institutions and service providers are concentrated in the town. The town has recently also opened a new summer lido near the Topľa River. The town’s principal industries include wood-processing and textile industries as well as some mechanical engineering, construction material and plastic production. The FEROVO industrial park, with an area of about 160 000 m² (one of the biggest newly constructed industrial parks in east Slovakia) and offering a capacity of up to 600 new workplaces, allows for prerequisities for the further development of the town and the region. 26 3 1 Basilica minor of the Nativity of Virgin Mary and the Pauline monastery 2 Reconstructed centre of Vranov nad Topľou 3 Basilica minor – main altar 6 4 Statue by sculptor B. The western edge of the village’s cadastre area borders the Water Reservoir Malá Domaša (“Little Domaša“). The oldest written record of the village is from 1317, though the history of Malá Domaša reaches as far as prehistoric times, as evidenced by several paleolithic finds within the vicinity of the village. An important landmark of the village is its Roman-catholic branch church, devoted to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The village cadastre area is also home to a modern fotovoltaic powerplant and a small hydroelectric powerplant. 28 2 3 Look at the village of Malá Domaša Western outskirts of the village border the smaller, countervailing Malá Domaša Water Reservoir Interior of the local Romancatholic branch Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 4 Reconstructed building of the local municipal office 5 Roman-catholic branch Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1724 (its construction was initiated and financed by local landowner Žigmund Pete, the completed church was consecrated by dean Juraj Frater) 29 2 5 3 1 4 Water Reservoir Domaša Situated in the Ondavská vrchovina Highlands, this multipurpose water reservoir came into being during the 1960s by damming the Ondava River and the flooding of 6 former villages in the river’s valley – Veľká Domaša (the former village lending its name to the reservoir), Dobrá nad Ondavou, Trepec, Kelča, Valkov and Petejovce. This man-made lake is 14 km long, has a maximum width of nearly 4 km, covers a total area of more than 14 km² and has an average depth of 18 m. The submontane character of the area, its good climatic conditions, quiet coves, clean water or fresh air make the water reservoir and its 5 resorts (Nová Kelča, Monika – Poľany, Eva – Holčíkovce, Valkov – Tíšava and Dobrá) a very appropriate place for family recreation. Domaša is also known for its annual cycling event “Okolo Domaše” (“Around the Domaša“). 30 1 General view of the Water Reservoir Domaša 2 Recreation resort Eva – Holčíkovce 3 Koliba Monika Restaurant (Poľany) 6 4 Anglers will also be in their element at the reservoir 5 Domaša has some of the warmest average water temperatures among water reservoirs in Slovakia 6 Recreation resort Dobrá 31 2 3 5 1 4 6 Bio lido Sninské rybníky The newly opened bio lido in the town outskirts resort of Sninské rybníky, situated in the wooded environment of the Vihorlat Mountains foothills, is a sought after place for rest and relaxation during the hot summer days. This lido, covering an area of nearly 3 500 m², has three depth ranges – from 10 cm to up to 300 cm. The ranges are separated by piers and the purification of the water works on a basis of the ecology of the natural biotope (water plants and algae), wholly without the aid of chemistry. Various playing fields or courses and playgrounds for children, as well as additional services (cafés, boarding and accommodation facilities) are all at the visitors’ disposal. 32 1 Aerial view of the Sninské rybníky resort 4 Playing field for children with exercise equipment 2 Bio lido during the summer 5 Waterslide 3 Children’s section of the swimming pool with water attractions 6 Water fountain used for cooling of the area during the summer 33 Protected areas The area of Upper Zemplín is exceptionally rich in natural beauty and uniquness. It contains the Východné Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (“The East Carpathians“), the Poloniny National Park (established in 1997, the easternmost national park in Slovakia), the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area (which protrudes into the southern part of the region) and several nature reserves – e. g. Humenská (protecting a forested hillside with several species of flora and fauna), Humenský sokol (the reserve contains interesting limestone formations and manifold flora), Iľovnica (a significant floristic dite with the occurence 34 and natural landmarks of one of the most precious relicts of the flysch belt in east Slovakia), the Vihorlat Primeval Forest (focused on the protection of natural primeval beech woodlands), Chlmecká skalka (where communities of rare thermophilic limestone substrate species occur), Jasenovská bučina (a geomorphologically and biologically immensely precious area with communities of rare plant species), Palotská jedlina (a reserve for the protection of natural mixed fir and beech woodlands), Beskyd (the area is used for scientific research purposes in the forestry and habitat conservation fields of study), Haburské rašelinisko (ideal 35 2 5 3 6 1 4 conditions for reptile species), Jarčiská (protection of rare meadow and fenland plant communities), Mokré lúky pod Čertižným (the location includes several prospering species of marsh and hygrophilous plants), Pod Demjatou (protection of beechwoods), Hostovické lúky (the site has the largest en masse occurence of the Siberian Iris in Slovakia), Stužica, Rožok and Havešová (along with other nature reserves in neighbouring Ukraine, these reserves were inscribed into the UNESCO List of Natural World Heritage Sites in 2007 as “The Carpathian Beech Primeval Forests“), Šimonka (highest hill of the Slanské vrchy Mountains with an elevation of 1 092 m a. s. l.), Oblík (well-known volcanic hummock in the northeastern part of the Slanské vrchy Mountains), Hermanovské skaly (protection of an expansive cliff complex with communities of relict plant species and rare species of fauna) or 36 1 Look at Morské oko in the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area 2 Vihorlat (1 076 m a. s. l.) 3 Look from the Humenský sokol National Nature Reserve at the town of Humenné 4 Hostovické lúky National Nature Reserve – a site with the common occurrence of the protected Siberian Iris 7 5 Pľaša Hill (1 162 m a. s. l.) in the Poloniny National Park 6 Poloniny are also unique thanks to their population of bears 7 Sninský kameň (1 005 m a. s. l.) from a bird’s eye view 37 4 2 5 1 3 Zámutovské skaly (the reserve was founded to protect the outcropping and boulder formations in the local relief, as well as communities of relict thermophilic plant species and preserved communities of rowans). One of the most remarkable ones is the renaissance era manor-house in Humenné, a national cultural landmark along with its adjoining park. Nowadays, it is the seat of the Vihorlat Museum with its exhibits of folk architecture and housing, local history, fine arts, the local environment and natural history, 40 religious artefacts and sites, and a combined gallery and concert hall. The nearby Open Air Museum represents a well-constructed exhibit of folk architecture and housing in the area of the East Carpathians. The exhibit offers a rich look at the historical furnishing that past farmers dwelled and worked in, including typical grannaries, well, blacksmith workshop or water mill. Various types of tools are a testament to the ingenuity of the people in trades like pottery, weaving, broom-making or 41 2 1 3 wheelwrighting. Connoisseurs of history should not forget to pay a visit to the impressive ruins of the medieval castles of Jasenov, Brekov and Čičva, the ancient pilgrimage site at Krásny Brod or the wooden temples of the Eastern rite (Greek-catholic as well as Orthodox) in the villages of Topoľa, Ruský Potok, Kalná Roztoka, Hrabová Roztoka, Jalová, Šmigovec and Uličské Krivé with their rich interior decorations of eastern Christian iconography (the village of Ulič also displays a mini-gallery showcasing collected images of all these churches).
