INTRODUCTION 1.1 In 2012, S.League marked the 17th year of the professional football league in Singapore. 1.2 A total of 13 clubs, including three foreign clubs (Albirex Niigata FC (S), Brunei DPMM FC and Harimau Muda), participated in the Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League in 2012. The 2012 season was Harimau Muda’s first season in the S.League, while it was the second for Brunei DPMM FC, with the latter having previously played in the S.League in 2009. 1.3 The 2012 season went down in history as one of the most competitive, with the fight for the Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League Championship between heavyweights Tampines Rovers FC and Brunei DPMM FC going down to the wire, right up till the very last match-day of the S.League season. 1.4 It was to be Tampines Rovers’ year however, as they pipped Brunei DPMM FC on the final day of the season to retain the S.League title for the second year running. 2 NEW STUDY ON FITNESS TEST FOR S.LEAGUE 2.1 In 2012, the fitness of players took on a higher emphasis. For 2012, the beep test was maintained with a minimum requirement at 13.1 for S.League players and 12.7 for Prime League players. At the same time, a fitness test study was also conducted in collaboration with the Sports Science Institute (SSI). At the end of an extensive study and conducting correlation tests on 30 randomly-picked players from the 13 S.League clubs , it was recommended that a new 2.4 km test will be implemented from the new season in 2013. 2.2 Further trials were conducted for the 2.4 km test and it was decided that for the new 2103 season, the passing timing would be 10.15 min for S.League players and 10.30 min for Prime League players. 3. GREAT EASTERN CHARITY SHIELD WITH S.LEAGUE FANFARE 3.1 As always, the S.League Great Eastern Charity Shield was the curtain- raiser for the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League season. It was contested by the 2011 Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League Champions, Tampines Rovers FC, and the 2011 RHB Singapore Cup Champions, Home United FC. FAS Annual Report (Jan 2012 - Mar 2013) 55 103541 FAS Annual Report.indd 55 8/24/13 11:00 AM 3.2 Tampines Rovers FC defeated Home United FC 2-0, with goals scored by Davor Piskor and Gligor Gligorov. 3.3 In 2012, the traditional pre-season S.League fanfare was held in conjunction with the Great Eastern Charity Shield. The entire S.League family of players and officials, including hundreds of fans, packed the stands at Jalan Besar and were entertained with a lively concert and a lucky draw. Several stalls were also set up selling S.League Clubs’ merchandise, helping to raise more awareness for the competition and participating clubs. 4. DOWN TO THE WIRE 4.1. Tampines Rovers FC retained their crown for the second consecutive year after winning the title in 2011. The Stags staved off a strong challenge from Brunei DPMM FC to win the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League title on the final day of the season, earning themselves entry to the 2013 AFC Cup tournament as well. Both the final day matches had fantastic crowd attendances; both at Jalan Besar Stadium, and overseas at Stadium Negara Hassanal Bolkiah, Brunei. The exciting matches were broadcast “live” on both Starhub (Singapore) and in Brunei, with audiences from both sides following the two matches in two different countries closely. In the end, the Stags defeated Harimau Muda while Brunei DPMM FC slipped to a surprise home defeat to Balestier Khalsa FC. 5 NEW PRIME LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 5.1 Balestier Khalsa FC’s Prime League Team clinched their first Prime League title in their club’s history, boasting the Prime League’s best defensive record along the way. National Football Academy (NFA) Under-18 came close, finishing second with 57 points, while Geylang United FC, the Prime League Champions in 2011, finished third with 57 points as well but with a lower goal difference as compared to the NFA Under-18. NEW SPONSORS - STARHUB LEAGUE CUP 6.1 The League Cup welcomed its new sponsor, StarHub, who has for many years supported Singapore football in a big way. The new format this season includes a Plate tournament. 6.2 Geylang United FC (now known as Geylang International) was the surprise club that caused upsets in its run-up to the final held on 11 August, only to be edged out 0-2 by Brunei DPMM FC in a captivating final. It was Brunei DPMM FC’s second win in this tournament, having won it the first time in 2009. Balestier Khalsa FC won the Plate Championship. 7 CLASH OF THE TITANS - RHB SINGAPORE CUP 7.1 Singapore Armed Forces FC (now known as Warriors FC) won the RHB Singapore Cup after beating a gritty Tampines Rovers FC 2-1 with a dramatic late winner from striker Erwan Gunawan in the final at Jalan Besar Stadium on 28 October. 7.2 The five invited foreign teams that participated were: Loyola Meralco Sparks from the Philippines, Phnom Penh Crown FC from Cambodia, Malaysia’s Young Tigers (Harimau Muda B), Yotha FC from Laos, and KBZ FC from Myanmar who were coached by former Singapore National Team coach P.N. Sivaji. 8. ASIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION (AFC) CUP CHAMPIONSHIP 8.1 Our representatives in the 2012 AFC Cup were 2011 Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League Champions, Tampines Rovers FC and 2011 RHB Singapore Cup Winners, Home United FC. Tampines Rovers were grouped together with Kitchee SC from Hong Kong, Song Lam Nghe An from Vietnam and Terengganu from Malaysia. Tampines Rovers FC was eliminated in the group stages after racking up a total of five points. 8.2 Home United FC was grouped together with Citizen from Hong Kong, Chonburi FC from Thailand and Yangon United from Myanmar. Home United FC progressed to the Round of 16 by finishing second in the group stage. However, their AFC Cup campaign ended when they were defeated 0-3 by Al Shorta of Syria in the later round. The S.League Selection Team was headed by Geylang United FC Head Coach V. Kanakarajan. 9.2 A highly-entertaining match saw the S.League Selection Team take on the Selangor side with good goal mouth action on both sides for the entire match. The final result was 3-1 to the hosts. 9.3 However, it was better news for our Singapore Veterans as they defeated the Selangor Veterans 2-1 in the event curtain raiser. Singapore football legend Fandi Ahmad sealed the win for the veterans with a moment of football brilliance, turning a defender just outside the box before curling in a sublime shot for the win. 10. TRIUMPH IN THE ASEAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION (AFF) SUZUKI CUP 10.1 Singapore won the 2012 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup held from 24 November to 22 December, making it the first and only team to win the competition four times (in 1998, 2004, 2007 and now 2012), including back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2007. Players from both the S.League and LionsXII made up the championship team which brought glory to Singapore football. 11. BRAINSTORMING AND SHARING AT S.LEAGUE SEMINARS 11.1 On 19 May, the S.League fraternity, comprising Club Chairmen and many other football administrators and officials, gathered to brainstorm and suggest ideas and ways to move Singapore football and the S.League forward. The key agenda included ways to improve match attendances and discussing options for a new S.League competition format for the new season in 2013. 11.2 On 26 January 2013, the first S.League “Best Practices” session was held and there were a lot of discussions amongst the Clubs on the following topics, namely Community Outreach, Club Sponsorship and Clubhouse Operations. FAS Annual Report (Jan 2012 - Mar 2013) 59 103541 FAS Annual Report.indd 59 8/24/13 11:00 AM 12. SPONSORSHIP OF S.LEAGUE 12.1 In 2012, StarHub made even bigger contributions and increased their support for Singapore football by becoming the title sponsors for the StarHub League Cup competition. Following a successful tournament, StarHub renewed its sponsorship for the StarHub League Cup in 2013. One of the highlights was the innovative tournament draw, where fans were nominated by the respective S.League clubs to represent the Clubs in the draw and it was telecast “live” on StarHub TV. 12.2 The RHB Singapore Cup has always been the hallmark of the S.League season and 2012 was no exception, with intense competition from the foreign sides complementing the great crowd turnout. 12.3 Many events were held in conjunction with this tournament. This included the novel cup draw where players had to juggle footballs at Bugis Junction; which drew a huge weekend crowd. A TWG tea appreciation session, where partners and sponsors related to Singapore football could network, was also organised at RHB premises, and guests were also introduced to the bank’s range of products and services. 12.4 Several marketing and publicity initiatives were launched to publicise matches, including an RHB Singapore Cup final ticket-giveaway on the S.League Facebook page, which reached more than 10,000 fans. Posters and banners were also put up in several stores in two shopping malls. A tissue distribution campaign to raise awareness to drum up publicity for the Singapore Cup semi-final fixtures was held over two weekends before the final. 12.5 The S.League also worked with sponsors RHB Bank and community partner People’s Association; 10 S.League star players conducted a football clinic for more than 200 children at Jalan Besar Stadium on 30 September. 12.6 Great Eastern also renewed its sponsorship of the S.League for both the 2012 and 2013 Seasons, valued at a total of $1 million. S.League supported Great Eastern’s “Live Great” programme with our renowned and popular football stars like Aleksandar Duric at their events, as well as in many Great Eastern outreach programmes at various schools. Many networking sessions for Great Eastern agents were also organised at the VIP Lounge at Jalan Besar Stadium during S.League match nights throughout the season. One of the key FAS Annual Report (Jan 2012 - Mar 2013) 60 103541 FAS Annual Report.indd 60 8/24/13 11:00 AM highlights was the Great Eastern Charity Shield match, which kicked off the 2012 Season and highlights the Greatwith Eastern Charity Shield match, which kicked off the 2012 Season and was held inwas conjunction the S.League Fanfare. was held in conjunction with the S.League Fanfare. 12.7 12.7 S.League partnered Yeo’s in the annual H-TWO-O Ultimate Champions League and provided S.League Yeo’sfrom in theSecondary annual H-TWO-O Champions League and provided a platformpartnered for students Schools, Ultimate Polytechnics and Institutes of Technical aEducation platform (ITEs) for students from Secondary Schools, Polytechnics and Institutes of Technical to showcase their football prowess. The key highlight was the new “S.League TV” segment, where video snippets of matches and events could be viewed online. 15.2 The three different Facebook pages for the different tournaments were amalgamated to become the “S.League” Facebook page. Fans welcomed the idea with a steady increase of up to 10,000 ”likes” towards the end of the 2012 season, from a starting base of about 3,000. 16. LEVERAGING ON LIONS XII’S SUCCESS IN THE MSL 16.1 The Lions XII participated in their first season in MSL in 2012. The team was made up of players from the S.League, with a majority from the Courts Young Lions. The team performed well to come in second in their debut season in the MSL. Their successful exploits are a testament to the quality of the players in S.League. Some of the notables are Shahril Ishak (Home United FC) and Baihakki Khaizan (Geylang United FC, now known as Geylang International). 16.2 Various cross-promotional campaigns for LionsXII and S.League matches were conducted. This included the sales of LionsXII match tickets which allowed for dual access to selected S.League matches. During the LionsXII matches, regular announcements were also made to publicise upcoming S.League matches. 17 NEW MARKETING INITIATIVES – CREATING THE BUZZ 17.1 To improve the match-day experience, professional cheerleader groups were formed in the 2012 season. The “S.League SuperGals” wowed the crowds in the first half of the season, while the “S.League SuperBabes” took over the reins and continued into the second half of the season. Besides the matches, the cheerleaders became an icon for the S.League, where they performed at all S.League events. FAS Annual Report (Jan 2012 - Mar 2013) 62 103541 FAS Annual Report.indd 62 8/24/13 11:00 AM FAS Annual Report (Jan 2012 - Mar 2013) 63 103541 FAS Annual Report.indd 63 8/24/13 11:00 AM 17.2 Another new initiative to improve the match-going experience involved getting foreign artistes to perform at S.League matches. This included getting the likes of the Me N Ma Girls (Myanmar’s first girl band), and Philippines Idol, Mau Marcelo, to perform at the RHB Singapore Cup quarter-finals to drum up support from the Filipino and Burmese communities for Loyola Meralco Sparks and KBZ FC from Myanmar respectively, as they squared off against each other. 17.3 The Me N Ma Girls were specially flown in for the match, which resulted in a record attendance of almost 3,000 people turning up at the Jalan Besar Stadium to watch the pulsating match between the two sides. Both the S.League and RHB Bank received even more exposure in the region when the band was featured wearing the RHB tank tops in a major Asian business publication article and in a Straits Times Life section article subsequently. 18. KIDDIES’ FOOTBALL TOURNAMENTS 18.1 Mini “Kiddies” football tournaments, involving about 1000 children from various football academies and schools on every occasion were also played before the start of the S.League matches on four occasions. These were great pre match activities where the children had a two-hours’ worth of football fun prior to watching the S.League match thereafter. 19. FIRST XI 19.1 First XI was launched on MediaCorp in 2012, and the S.League collaborated with this highlypopular TV series. From friendly matches with Prime League sides, to cameo appearances by renowned S.League footballers and coaches, S.League was featured in this 10-week series, culminating in the finals on 27 May where an S.League All-Stars Selection played with the First XI Final Team at the Jalan Besar Stadium in front of a capacity crowd of 6,000, in a match that was also broadcast “LIVE” on MediaCorp TV. 20. S.LEAGUE AWARDS NIGHT 20.1 The S.League Awards Night 2012 was held at an unorthodox venue at the ITE College East Campus on 11 November. Though a simple affair, the ambience was perfect as it demonstrated the desire by S.League to reach out to the heartlands, schools and institutes of higher learning as part of its community outreach objective. The ceremony was graced by the FAS Annual Report (Jan 2012 - Mar 2013) 64 103541 FAS Annual Report.indd 64 8/24/13 11:00 AM opportune attendance of the FIFA Ambassador for Hope, Dr. Gabriele Princess Inaara The Begum Aga Khan, who was in town that same evening. 21. COLLABORATIONS WITH NEW STAKEHOLDERS 21.1 The FAS/S.League signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). This MOU paves the way for the affiliation of three S.League Clubs to the three respective ITE campuses in Singapore. The idea was for the S.League Clubs to interact with the ITE students as part of their community outreach and promote a healthy sporting culture, particularly football, and to start to build a fan base with their respective affiliated ITEs. 21.2 S.League also started a collaboration with the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) with the aim of strengthening community partnership. Mr S Devendran, SINDA’s representative, said that SINDA will work with all S.League Clubs to try and a build a way where both could work together in a partnership and come up with ideas to engage the Indian community. The initiatives that were derived subsequently included an invitation to the less privileged children to join the S.League Clubs for the kiddies football sessions on weekends. 22. LOOKING FORWARD 22.1 The S.League Business Unit will continue to work closely with our S.League Clubs, Sponsors and Stakeholders to promote the S.League and further enhance the stadium experience for our fans and partners in 2013 and to continue to raise the profile of the S.League Players and Sponsors and the standard of the S.League.
