The award marks the third consecutive year the Foundation’s GO GREEN Group was recognized for its environmental practices. Over the past year, the GO GREEN group has been sharing concerns about exposure and health and urging changes to the current practice of using synthetic herbicides in their community’s common spaces. In addition, the GO GREEN Group served as an incubator for the Kentlands Community Garden, which had a successful first growing season in 2010. During Gaithersburg Green Week they have partnered with the Environmental Affairs Committee to co-host a free screening of the documentary film, A Chemical Reaction, which details the harmful effects of chemical herbicides and pesticides. n Photo Courtesy: Kathy McKee Mark your calendars and get your running shoes ready, the Town Crier has learned the favorite community 5K run/walk race will be hitting the streets of Kentlands and Lakelands on Saturday, September 3, 2011. After participating in a few events in the Kentlands for Oktoberfest and Halloween Rocks, we knew the Kentlands is where we wanted to be.” E.nopi Gaithersburg, a learning center for children ages 3 to 12, opened in the Kentlands at 248 Main street on May 5. A grand opening was held on Saturday, May 14. “Whether the child is ahead or behind in school, we make sure every student has a strong foundation to master each new concept introduced,” Fitzpatrick said. “Children love coming to E.nopi because it’s a fun way for them to learn at their own pace. E.nopi is a non-pressure program, and children work better in this kind of environment.” E.nopi Gaithersburg is open six days a week. Tuition is on a month-to-month basis with no contracts. In celebration of its grand opening, the center is offering $100 off the first month’s tuition for new students. For more information and hours of operation, visit www.enopimathreading.com and click on the Gaithersburg link, or find them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/enopi.northbethesda. The supplemental education program originated in Korea about 30 years ago and today has more than 2.5 million children enrolled worldwide. The term “E.nopi” means “eye level” in Korean. The philosophy behind the E.nopi program is to bring the instructional material to the child’s eye level. About two years ago upon the advice from her uncle, an E.nopi owner in New York, Fitzpatrick and her husband opened their first E.nopi center in North Bethesda. The pair made significant personal sacrifices to bring E.nopi to Maryland, investing nearly all of their resources to launch the business. “The E.nopi learning center is a stimulating environment for children that makes learning fun,” said Susie Fitzpatrick, owner and director of E.nopi Gaithersburg. “We focus on boosting self-confidence and independence with our program.” “We sold both of our cars, lived with my mom for about two years, and invested everything we had into opening the first E.nopi in North Bethesda on Nicholson Lane,” Fitzpatrick said. “It was either buy a home or start a business. We chose the latter because ironically we always talked about getting a master’s degree in education.” KENTLANDS Downt own News E.nopi Opens on Main Street Melissa Dahne Lessons are offered for math and English, and the curriculum is aligned with the Educational Standards of the State of Maryland. Students attend the center once a week for one hour per subject. The center provides workbooks for both subjects, and hands-on materials are used in the math curriculum to teach children critical thinking skills. “E.nopi math is unique because we offer critical thinking,” Fitzpatrick said. “This portion enhances the student’s ability to think logically, analytically, and reasonably with patterns, shapes, and problem solving.” www.kentlands.com n May 2011 Kentlands Downtown Partnership Elects Joe Pritchard as President KDP launches map project, Arts & Entertainment plan, and City Election Debates By Paula Ross After exceptional growth and leadership in its first official year of operation, Kentlands Downtown Partnership (KDP), a merchants association created by local Kentlands Downtown merchants and neighbors, is celebrating the results of special elections that fill its Board of Officers. Paula Ross, owner of Andy’s Parties/Great Kids Village, and the driving force behind the formation and growth of KDP, is excited about the newly-elected Board members. With these special elections, Ross has stepped back from President to Vice President. Joe Pritchard, owner of Pritchard Music Academy, was elected President. Ann Derryberry, owner of Chyten Educational Services, will fill the Secretary position. Will Corbin, owner of Corbin Creative Databases LLC, and Joe Allen, Lakelands resident, will remain in their positions as Treasurer and Member-at-Large, respectively. “The most incredible experience of all of this is the fact that we are enhancing the education of our future in the children that come to E.nopi. That experience is priceless, and it puts a smile on our faces every single day,” Fitzpatrick said. E.nopi joins several other family-friendly businesses in the Kentlands. “The Kentlands is a very family-oriented community, and we feel it’s the perfect fit,” Fitzpatrick said. “We always wanted to open a location in Gaithersburg, but we Ross comments, “This is an amazing group of business owners who will take KDP forward 3 with energy and great ideas to reach our goals. Joe Pritchard is very passionate about making Kentlands Downtown a thriving area for business and consumers. He and I have been talking about the potential change-up for a while, as my time has become increasingly stretched with my own business and family. This is a good move for the organization and for me.” “I am excited about the KDP’s current position in the community, and I am looking forward to increasing our downtown’s profile through an increased marketing effort. I’m thankful for the support of Paula, our Board of Officers and our members,” says Pritchard. Upcoming KDP events include a booth at Kentlands Day on May 7 to promote member businesses and a fundraising day and networking event at Star Diner on May 11. Current initiatives include the publication of a community map, exploration of an Arts & Entertainment District designation, and plans to host City Election forums and information sessions later this year. KDP will also support the Main Street Music Festival this summer on the Main Street green. KDP’s mission is to serve the unique needs of the Kentlands Downtown business community and surrounding neighborhoods by creating a more vibrant and thriving Downtown. Members share a vision of KDP as the go-to organization for Kentlands Downtown businesses, providing support and opportunities for our business members to grow, learn from one another, and reach new customers. For additional information about the KDP, please email Joe Pritchard, Paula Ross or any member of the KDP Board. The June Historic Trust meeting date will be held June 1, 2011 at the Kentlands Clubhouse at 6:30 p.m. www.kentlands.com n May 2011 MANAGER’SCorner TREASURER’Report S By Randy Fox, General Manager By Robert Randolph, Community Treasurer Police Advisory Committee The Gaithersburg Police Advisory Committee will hold their regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the Kentlands Clubhouse, Wednesday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m. The Police Department plans on rotating their meeting places throughout the Gaithersburg community in an effort to have more community involvement in crime fighting, etc. The meeting will not be geared to our community specifically; it is just a regular monthly business meeting, with reports from representatives from a variety of Gaithersburg neighborhoods and a report from the Acting Chief of Police. There will be an opportunity for Q & A for residents. With the recent incidents of break-ins and vandalism here, this might be a good time for you to get more informed about our local Police Department and its good work in our community. Financial Highlights Here is a quick overview of KCA’s financial situation as of March 31, 2011, based on CMC’s most recent monthly Financial Report. The corresponding figures from 2010 and 2009 may be of interest for comparison. On KCA’s Balance Sheet, the steady growth in Total Cash and Investments reflects well on the Assembly’s adherence to its longterm Reserve Fund Plan. As of March 31, accumulations in the General Reserve totaled $614,289.62, and in the Recreation Facilities Reserve $693,432.76. Another noteworthy item among KCA ‘s assets and liabilities is Accounts Receivable for Residential Assessments (unpaid assessments) in the amount of $40,780.81, which however is more than offset by Prepaid Residential Assessments totaling $88,927.32. Reported year-to-date total income is below budget, as shown above, but most of this variance is due to timing issues with regard to Town Crier and Community Directory advertising revenue. These numbers should become more meaningful as data accumulate over the months ahead. The over-budget total of YTD expenses is also, according to information provided by General Manager Randy Fox, largely due to timing issues--in particular contract payments made a week earlier than last year and therefore in a different month than the budget anticipated. Of greater substantive interest is a $8,383.25 variance with regard to the Snow Removal Contract, due to the heavy snows in January and February. Despite the unfavorable YTD variances mentioned above, YTD net income is still positive--that is, KCA is living within its means. The year-end prospect is similarly positive on the whole although less so than was anticipated in the budget. The Income and Expense Projection Report section of the March Financial Report calculates the following full-year outcome: Courts Get New Coating The tennis courts and the basketball court will be getting a facelift within the next few days. Each of the courts will have cracks repaired and they will receive a new color coating. Since safety is in the forefront of everyone’s mind, tennis court 2 is closed due to a significant crack that could cause injury. Once we receive confirmation of the repair dates, we will post the court closings on the website and at the clubhouse. Pool Opens Memorial Day Weekend Preparations are continuing for the much anticipated pool opening on Saturday, May 28. The pool hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily and lap swimming is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Organic Turf Testing The KCA Board of Trustees approved a two-year plan to set up test areas for an organic turf program. The results of the organic test program will be measured against the areas receiving synthetic applications and an area receiving no application. Organic applications will be applied to two areas which are the tot lot areas behind the clubhouse and on Kent Oaks Way near the lakes. The applications will be on the grassy areas surrounding the tot lots, and no applications of CONTINUED ON PAGE 9... You may have heard of the recent vandalism in and around the Kentlands®, and the Gaithersburg Police Community Services Office has provided the following tips to assist residents in reporting an incident. The effectiveness of the Gaithersburg and Montgomery County Police Departments’ crime prevention efforts is enhanced by active participation by its citizens. By calling and reporting suspicious persons or activity you not only aid the police departments but you make the community a much safer place to live. Most times, citizens fail to call the police because they do not know what they are being on the lookout for and at other times, citizens are hesitant to call in fear of being labeled as a “nosy neighbor” or “targeted” by those they are calling on. There are two numbers to call to notify the police of an incident and they are: For Emergencies: DIAL 9-1-1 Non-Emergencies dial 301-279-8000 Another way of reporting a crime is online through the Montgomery County Police webpage under “Citizen Online Reporting.” http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/ poltmpl.asp?url=/content/pol/coplogic/ cologic.asp You may report theft, vandalism, identity theft, and lost property using the Citizen Online Boost your business in the Kentlands by reaching thousands of dedicated readers every month! They were able to purchase not only plant material but also items from the beautifully stocked gift shop. It is worth a visit! The Main Street Music Festival returns to the Kentlands starting Thursday, June 16. The festival was founded last year by Joe and Becky Pritchard, owners of the Pritchard Music Academy. The couple sought a way to give back to the Kentlands and Lakelands after their fledgling business received a warm welcome from community members. “The Festival is a lot of fun and a great way to showcase our neighborhood to visitors from outside of the area,” Joe said. The festival will take place on Thursday nights throughout the summer at the Main Street Pavilion. The event is an opportunity for residents to enjoy fantastic music while seeing neighbors and friends, both new and old. With cool temperatures and rain falling, it felt more like winter when close to 100 children arrived at the Kentlands Clubhouse on Saturday, April 16 to enjoy a fun filled breakfast with the bunny and friends. Many of the children arrived with baskets in tow, dressed in their “spring-time best” all in celebration of spring. But the main attraction once again proved to be the arrival of Hoppers who patiently sat posing for photos with all the children. Unfortunately, the rain kept the children from enjoying the annual egg hunt on the lawn, but clowns, facepainting and other fun indoor activities provided by the Clubhouse staff helped keep the children entertained. From the looks of the happy faces in these photos, it’s safe to say a “hoppy” time was had by all. n Photos Courtesy: Kathy McKee Kentlands Town Crier12 www.kentlands.com n May 2011 www.kentlands.com n May 2011 13 Kentlands Town Crier Kentlands Town Crier14 www.kentlands.com n May 2011 Photo Courtesy: Glen Palman F O U NDAT I ON Update By Carrie Dietz, Foundation Director From the Kentlands House and Garden Tour and Kentlands Day and the start of season two of the Community Garden to a successful Team Up to Green Up community clean up and an environmental award, the Foundation has seen a flurry of activity this month. In 2009 she began creating a perennial flower bed that eventually ran the length of the frontage, and moved to enhancing the back of the building in 2010. Because of the location of the property, her efforts have resulted in a transformation of an entrance to the Kentlands from ordinary to outstanding. Ms. Etches has also contributed her gardening knowledge by suggesting better mulching procedures and ways to maintain healthier trees on City streets. Annie Etches, along with Condo President Abe Schneider, was presented her award by Mayor Sidney Katz during the Environmental Awards on May 2. As part of Gaithersburg Green Week, the City of Gaithersburg presented an Environmental Award to Etches for demonstrating outstanding environmental stewardship in the Gaithersburg community, with the goal of inspiring others to pursue similar efforts. The award was presented by Mayor Sidney Katz and members of the City Council at a ceremony held Monday, May 2, 2011, at City Hall. n Gaithersburg Book Festival Children’s Village Offers Literary Fun for Young Readers and Writers By Britta Monaco From award-winning, inspirational children’s authors to family friendly activities, the 2011 Gaithersburg Book Festival Children’s Village is sure to educate and entertain. Kentlands Town Crier20 www.kentlands.com n May 2011 CITY News By Britta Monaco, City of Gaithersburg Consultant Delivers Economic Development Report Last fall City officials approved a contract with Orion Ventures, LLC to explore a variety of strategies and issues related to economic development in Gaithersburg. The seven month contract ran from October, 2010 to April, 2011. Based on input from the Mayor and City Council, the business community, members of the public, and City staff, the consultant was asked to assist the City in refining its short term economic development strategy by focusing on business outreach and consultation, policy considerations, economic development strategic planning, and content development for an economic development-specific website. On Monday, April 26, 2011 at a Mayor and City Council Work Session, Mike Knapp of Orion Ventures provided the City with a report of his research, findings and recommendations. The 48 page document is available for download at http://www.gaithersburgmd.gov/documents/community_development/Econ_Dev_ Report_Final.pdf”. The Economic Development Strategy report identifies current opportunities, challenges, competing policy priorities, and strategies for achieving economic development success in Gaithersburg. Highlighted in the report is the need to build adequate infrastructure for a sustainable community, and the need to promote job growth within the City. “In today’s climate, it is imperative that we be proactive in forging our own success when it comes to economic development,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz. “Our contract with Orion Ventures has given us food for thought, and a solid base from which to move forward.” Economic development initiatives will continue to evolve as the City makes progress in its search for a full time Economic Development Director. Fifty seven applications were received when the position was recently advertised. An internal selection team is screening them, and the interview process will begin soon. For more information on the City’s economic development programs and strategies please contact Deputy City Manager Tony Tomasello at 301-258-6310 or [email protected]. Tony Award Nominee Once On This Island Comes to Arts Barn Stage The story of The Little Mermaid is re-mastered as the Arts Barn Theater presents a KAT 2nd Stage Production of Once On This Island, with music by Stephen Flaherty, and book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. This show is recommended for audiences aged 10 and older. Parental guidance is suggested. Once On This Island is an enchanting musical fable that tells the story of forbidden love between a peasant girl and a rich city boy whom she saves from death. Originally inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, www.kentlands.com n May 2011 the Broadway show transports the story to a Caribbean island where social prejudice divides the island. A group of storytellers tell the tale of the young peasant girl, Ti Moune, who was saved from a flood by the gods as a child and raised by a pair of kindly old peasants. As she grows up, however, Ti Moune longs for a grander life than the one she faces and, inspired by the sight of a young and handsome rich boy driving past in a white car, prays to the gods to grant her wish. The New York Times calls it “A sugar-andcartoon-free answer to The Little Mermaid. A 90-minute Caribbean fairy tale told in rousing song and dance, this show is a joyous marriage of the slick and the folkloric, of the hard-nosed sophistication of Broadway musical theater and the indigenous culture of a tropical isle.” The Arts Barn, Gaithersburg’s premier cultural arts facility, is located at 311 Kent Square Road, Gaithersburg. In addition to theatrical productions staged in partnership with local community groups in its 99-seat theater, the Arts Barn also features an art gallery, two artist-in-residence studios, art classes, camps, workshops, and unique retail from local artisans.
