Email submissions to Rhonda Molbeck by the 20th of each month for consideration.
Dear SCHS Community:
With the observance of Ash Wednesday on February 22, we now find ourselves in the midst of the Lenten
season, that time of year when we are asked to take a ‘time-out,’ to put our priorities in order and to
examine ourselves to see if our thoughts, our words, and our actions are really in sync. Is what we profess
consistent with how we live? Is there a difference between what we say and what we do? If so, Lent is a
good time to do something about it, to make a real change in our lives.
During our Lenten timeout, let’s also keep in mind the threefold theme: Listen, Reflect, and Respond. First,
let’s listen attentively to the voice of God in prayer, giving ourselves time to quiet ourselves and think about
what we are doing so that we can both speak to, and more importantly, listen to God. Take some time to
pray.
In conjunction with listening, take some time to reflect. After acknowledging God’s presence and
unconditional love for us, reflect seriously on the effect that ought to have on our lives. Reflect on our
invitation to repent and to renew our commitment to follow the gospel.
After listening and reflecting, it’s time to respond, time to use the gifts and talents we’ve been given to love
and serve others. Throughout the year, there are numerous opportunities for us to respond by getting
involved in service here in the St. Cat’s community as well as in your own neighborhoods.
Throughout the Lenten season at St. Catherine’s, we will be reminded with daily prayer and meditation
about our need to Listen, Reflect, and Respond. A Communion service will be offered each week for those
who wish to attend, and an all-school Mass will be celebrated on Mar. 14. We will also pray the Stations of
the Cross together on Mar. 28.
Meanwhile, student activities go on at St. Cat’s. Congratulations are extended to our Pon Pom and
Cheerleader squads for their good showings at the State competition, and to the Mock Trial team for taking
3rd place in regionals. The cast and crew of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ are busily rehearsing --- show times are
7 pm on March 8, 9, 10, and 2 pm on March 11. Don’t miss it! And we certainly wish our basketball teams
the very best as they try to earn their way to the tournament in Madison. Go Angels!
In the midst of everything else, have a blessed Lent.
Peace,
Andrew Meuler

News From the Guidance Department
Seniors
Please remind your senior students to see their counselor if they are undecided or have questions
about their future plans.
Scholarships for College: There are still scholarship opportunities available for seniors planning
to attend college. Completing the applications and turning them in by the appropriate deadlines is key to
possibly winning one of them. Several local scholarships are currently available. Chances of winning a local
scholarship are greater than they are for a national one. Please encourage your sons/daughters to complete
required forms neatly and accurately.
To learn more about scholarships, students should check the Guidance Bulletins posted in the STEP rooms, or
the school website at www.saintcats.org (Go to Guidance and then follow the links to scholarship bulletins).
Request the appropriate forms in the Guidance Office. Be sure to meet Guidance Department deadlines
which are sometimes earlier than the deadline on the application. Often there are additional sections or
materials for the counselor to prepare, or there is a limit to the number of applications that can be submitted.
Juniors
We are meeting individually with juniors to discuss future plans. We hope to complete our meetings by Easter.
Juniors planning to go on to college are encouraged to take the ACT either in April or June. Students were
given the opportunity to attend a meeting and receive application materials on Feb. 7. Students can also pick
up registration materials in the Guidance offices for the ACT Assessment, the ACT + Writing test and the SAT
test if they did not receive them at this meeting. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THE REGISTRATION
DEADLINES! The deadline for the April 14th test is March 9th. Late registration deadline is March 23rd. The
deadline for the June 9th test is May 4th. Our School Code is 501-920.
The ACT Assessment is required by most in-state and midwest schools. St. Catherine’s is a site for the June
ACT test and our Test Center code is 188860. Students have the option to take the ACT Assessment ($34) or
the ACT + Writing (cost is $ 49.50). Excellent practice questions are available on-line at www.actstudent.org
and at www.TestPrepWI.org. Encourage your sons and daughters to take advantage of these study helpers.
Registration deadline for the May 5th SAT test is April 6th. For the June 2nd SAT test the deadline is May 8th and
the cost is $49. This includes the mandatory writing section. The closest SAT testing site for the May 5th test
date is Park High School (50-240). In June you would have to go to Milwaukee to take the test. Further
information can be found at www.collegeboard.org.
We were pleased that a number of you were able to attend our Junior Parent Meetings held on February 4th and
6th. For the families who were not represented at this meeting the packet of materials will be given to your
junior student during his/her individual conference.
Freshmen Sophomores
This spring we will be meeting with the freshmen and sophomores for some career exploration work.
Wisconsin Leadership Seminar - Sophomore Amy Grycowski has been selected to attend the Wisconsin
Leadership Seminar at Carroll College in June. Amanda Sinnett is our alternate. Congratulations, Amy and
Amanda!

New Scholarship Opportunity for Current Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors

community. Judge Barry was a tremendous leader and civic volunteer, working with – among
other organizations – Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Rotary Club, the Kids First Fund, Carthage College,
Roma Lodge, the Italian-American Society of Kenosha and his church council.
Click here for The Honorable Dennis J. Barry Community Service Scholarship application.
This is a one-time $1,000 scholarship, open to current freshmen, sophomores and juniors, to go directly to
tuition at SCHS. Prior recipients may reapply each year they are eligible. Deadline to apply for this

The Time is Now: 2012/2013 Financial Aid Deadline
Rapidly Approaching
With spring right around the corner, it’s time to start
thinking about the 12-13 academic year. If your family is
going to be applying for financial aid for the upcoming
year, this is the time!
The 2012-13 financial aid deadline to apply is Apr. 14,
2012. You may apply online at PSAS Online Application,
or by picking up a paper copy of the application in the
SCHS main office between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
There is also a student work application included in the paper copy. This needs to be completed and
returned to St. Catherine's for your student to be considered for the program.
The paper copies of the form need to be mailed directly to PSAS and postmarked by Apr. 14, 2012.
Please note that you need to have your 2011 federal taxes completed in order to apply. PSAS is
requesting a copy of your 2011 federal tax return and all supporting documentation (W-2s, SS benefits,
Unemployment benefits, etc.) to be sent along with your application. This means that if you file online
your application will not be complete until all the supporting documentation is submitted. Once received,
PSAS will begin to process your aid request. Aid Award Packages will be sent out to families in
mid-May. Once received, please review, sign and return your accepted award certificate by the deadline
noted on the form.
Please do not miss the aid deadline of April 14, 2012. We can not guarantee funding for applications
received after this date.
If you have any questions regarding our financial aid program, please contact Kory Romel at 632-2785,
ext. 402 or by email.

Open Enrollment Suspended for Choice Due to Limit Being Met
St. Catherine's High School has been approved for the The Parental
Private School Choice Program for the 12-13 year. The number of
student applications for the Parental Private School Choice Program
(PPSCP), however, has exceeded the 500 FTE statutory limit.
Therefore, the state superintendent has signed an order prohibiting
schools participating in the PPSCP from accepting additional PPSCP
student applications.
By Apr. 20, schools will provide DPI with a list of students that have accepted their seats. DPI will
review the information submitted by schools on April 20 and determine if the number of students is below
the 500 FTE limit. If so, schools, like St.Catherine's, will be able to accept student applications in May.

Black & White Ball Update
The days are ticking away until the can’t miss party of the year – The Black & White Ball! This
year’s event promises to wow everyone. We have great items to bid on including a private shopping
experience at Rasmussen Diamonds, a variety of vacation packages from Palm Island, Florida to
Wisconsin’s Northwoods and a private party at Racine’s only ultra lounge, envi. If that’s not enough
to get you excited, how about the chance to dine with royalty in Salem, Germany?!
If you’re planning on coming, take advantage of our Early Angel Incentive. All guests who arrive
before 5:30 p.m. will have their name entered for a chance to win a $200 credit on their evening’s bill.
You can also purchase Golden Tickets for a chance to sit at the exclusive Gold Table, where your

not too late to purchase your Black & White Ball tickets. Tickets are $100/person, which includes
dinner, drinks, dancing and more!
If you’re not sure about attending but would still like to get involved in our signature event, we have a
variety of volunteer roles available. Anyone wishing to help out should come to our volunteer orientation on Wednesday, Mar. 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. For those who are unable to attend but
would still like to volunteer, please contact Tim Weiss at (262) 632-2785 ext. 414.
Don’t miss out on an evening to remember. It’s the one event
of the year where St. Catherine’s parents, alumni and friends
join together in support of student activities and athletics.
2012 Black & White Ball Raffle Update
With the weather outside being far from frightful this winter, our students have missed out on one of
Wisconsin’s finest traditions – the Snow Day! Luckily we don’t have to rely on the whims of Mother
Nature, and we can create our own “snow day!”
We can still reach our goal of $55,000 in ticket sales if each student sells 3 books of raffle tickets
($60). In addition to earning a snow day, the top overall sellers will get to choose from prizes like
prime parking for next school year or an iPad II. We also are still offering a $25 gift card to Olive
Garden or Kwik Trip for every $200 in tickets a student sells.
Here’s a few suggestions for selling tickets:
1). Talk to your parish priest about selling raffle tickets after weekend masses or parish events.
2). Inquire at Walgreens, Pick ‘N Save or another local business about setting up a table for a few
hours on a Saturday or Sunday to sell tickets to shoppers.
3). Give raffle tickets as gifts for upcoming birthdays.
Please contact Tim Weiss at (262) 632-2785 ext. 414 for additional raffle tickets or if you wish to
discuss other sales opportunities. Keep selling so we can earn a much needed “snow day!”

Mar. 31. More details will be announced in future issues

Ten local teams competed at the Regional Mock Trial Tournament held at the Racine County

SCHS had three local lawyer coaches helping our eleven team members learn about the law of
adverse position; we are very grateful for all their help. Thank you to Mary Blandford,

National Honor Society and the Hope Center . . . Teaming up for Fair Trade
NHS and the Hope Center are selling fair trade , coffee and
cocoa, during Lenten Fridays in the SCHS cafeteria during the two
high school lunches.
This supports third world farmers and growers by giving them a fair
price for their product rather than dealing with large food
processing/distributing companies. This also helps depressed areas of
the world and the growers to become self sufficient.
Coffee is $1.25/cup
Cocoa is $1.50/cup
Creamer is also available
Bulk coffee will also be for sale to faculty.
The two stores downtown run by the Hope Center, Just Trade (open 9am-5pm M-Sa) and Cup
of Hope (open 7am-5pm M-Sa), are also having a contest for our STEPs during Lent. The
STEP with the greatest number of students making purchases at one or both of the stores will
receive a free treat of brownies and cocoa at the end of Lent. The address of both stores is 506
7th St.

11:00 a.m. against St. John Vianney
(Brookfield).
The boys' first game is Friday, Mar. 9 at 7:45
p.m. against the winner of St. Mary (Elm
Grove) and Holy Angels (West Bend).
All Padre Serra Tournament games are played
at Mt. Mary College in the Bloechl Center
(2929 North 92nd St.) in Milwaukee. You can
follow the progress of the 8th grade

Coming!
Parents will soon receive more information
about the iPad technology that will be
implemented throughout the high school
and middle school next fall. As is
customary for this time of year, we are in

St. Catherine’s High School was founded in 1864 along the shores of Lake Michigan by the Racine Dominican
Sisters determined to spread God’s message through Christian education. The co-educational institution promotes
diversity and respect while teaching students in accordance with the four pillars of the Dominican Order: Community, Prayer, Service and Study. St. Catherine’s strives to develop the God-given talents inherent in every student
while preparing them with the skills, faith and knowledge needed to achieve life success. St. Catherine’s prides
itself on the immeasurable impact over 16,000 Angel alumni have had on countless communities across the world.
