Nozzle selection is often based upon droplet size.
The droplet size from a nozzle becomes very important
when the efficacy of a particular plant protection chemical
is dependent on coverage, or the prevention of spray
leaving the target area is a priority.
The majority of the nozzles used in agriculture can be classified as producing
either fine, medium, coarse, or very coarse droplets.
Nozzles that produce fine droplets are usually recommended for post-emergence
applications,which require excellent coverage on the intended target area. The
most common nozzles used in agriculture are those that produce medium sized
droplets. Nozzles producing medium and coarse-sized droplets can be used for
contact and systemic herbicides, pre‑emergence surface-applied herbicides,
insecticides and fungicides.
An important point to remember when choosing a spray nozzle that produces a
droplet size in one of the six categories is that one nozzle can produce different
droplet size classifications at different pressures. A nozzle might produce medium
droplets at low pressures, while producing fine droplets as pressure is increased.
Droplet size classes are shown in the following tables to assist in choosing an
appropriate spray tip.
Nozzle selection and maintenance are two of the
most important aspects of accurate and efficient
pesticide application. Selecta offers the largest range
of Agricultural/Horticultural spray nozzles in Australia,
incorporating the leading brands of Lechler and Teejet,
to cover all applications.
Selecta’s Lechler range offers precise German engineering,
proving very popular in the low pressure air induction market (IDK) and
the under tree/vine nozzles (IDKS). Lechler IDK ceramic range received an
innovation award at SIMA 2007, one of the leading agricultural exhibitions
in Europe.
Selecta’s Teejet range from the United States incorporates the
most extensive product portfolio including the famous Turbo Teejet family
(TT’s, TTI (induction) and Twinjets), an extensive range of nozzle bodies and
accessories and recently the AIXR low pressure induction nozzle was released
to market with great success.
There are many types of Teejet nozzles available with each providing different
flow rates, spray angles, droplet sizes, and patterns. Some of these spray tip
characteristics are indicated by the tip number. Each type of spray tip is rated
under different operating conditions. For example, TeeJet® standard flat spray
tips are rated in GPM (Gallons per Minute) whereas the TX ConeJet® hollow cone
tips, which have much lower capacity, are rated in GPH (Gallons Per Hour).
wind speed and spraying
Wind speeds are critical when spraying. If conditions are too windy,
chemicals may not be applied correctly to the target crop leading to poor
results, increased drift and possible off target damage.
The table below offers a simple method of assessing wind speeds,
otherwise can be more accurately measured using the Selecta Wind Meter.

Nozzles and Accessories
Nozzles are generally considered to be the most critical
component in the spraying system chain, and yet the
most neglected. Worn or damaged nozzles result in over
application of expensive chemicals, crop damage and
environmental contamination.
Nozzles should be examined and checked regularly.
Using water, check the amount as measured in the jug against nozzle
data sheet. If the value is 5% or more above that specified, replace nozzle.
Always keep a quantity of spare nozzles with the machine for immediate
replacement when necessary in the field. A visual assessment of the nozzle
discharge pattern will show up any streaking due to damaged nozzles.
Always keep a new nozzle to one side to use as a comparison.

Blocked nozzles should be soaked in clean, warm water with
a mild detergent added if necessary, and carefully cleaned
only with a soft brush or air-line.
Never attempt to clear a nozzle by blowing or attempt to remove stubborn
deposits with pins, wire or other sharp implements.
Clean all filters regularly and replace if necessary. Remember, no matter how
good the associated spray machinery, it is the nozzle quality and condition that
determines just how effectively an expensive chemical is applied.
It is strongly recommended that nozzles are renewed once a
year or at the first signs of deterioration, whichever occurs first.
The cost of renewing a complete set of nozzles is only a fraction of the
potential costs due to chemical wastage and crop damage caused by worn
and damaged nozzles.
The tractor travel speed is the most important variable in sprayer performance.
A 10% change in tractor speed gives a 10% change in application rate.
This can lead to over or under application of chemicals. Determine the speed by
measuring 100 metres then time in seconds how long it takes to cover the 100
metres. If spraying in hilly terrain time distance both up hill and down hill and
average the results.

5. Check the calibration procedure
Use a measuring jug and stopwatch to check the output of several nozzles
across the boom at the recommended pressure. If the outputs vary slightly from
the chart then adjust the pressure in the system to achieve the correct volume.
If nozzle flow rates are greater than 5% above or below the manufacturer’s
charts then the whole sprayer system needs to be checked for leaks, blockages
etc,cleaned out and the calibration process repeated until accuracy is attained.
If after re-checking the variance is still greater than 5%, new nozzles are
recommended. The nozzle charts also allow application rates to be determined if
the tractor speed, the nozzle and the spraying pressure are known.

commonly used for band spraying and
also widely used in Knapsacks. (Do not
confuse this nozzle with the similar

The Lurmark DT nozzles have the
same output as the old sized AN0.5 AN20 nozzles, but when the change

Type 5880 Boomjet Nozzle is used for spraying areas not easily accessed with
a boom sprayer. It combines two off-centre tips and three VeeJet nozzles to
produce an overall wide swath flat spray. The nozzle assembly provides good
distribution considering the wide pattern coverage obtained: however the
uniformity is not as good as with a properly operated boom sprayer. Uniformity
can be optimised by double overlapping spray swaths on successive sprayer
passes. Remember this also doubles the application volume.
Supplied with one additional 1/4” NPT pipe plug and one blank tip for setting
BoomJet to one side only. Also has a 1/4” NPT pressure gauge port.

The Ceramic Hollow cone nozzles are designed for creating small droplets
ideal for foliar of insecticides and fungicides. These hollow cone type nozzles
are constructed with a moulded outer over a ceramic insert that is mated to a
turbulence chamber and counter-swirling device easily separated for cleaning.
The ceramic nozzle allows for long lasting life and the vortexing action in
the nozzle provides a 80° between 3-5 bar, but works well at both high and
low operation pressures. The ceramic hollow cone nozzles are the offered
alternative to the Albuz ATR Hollow cone nozzles.

Nozzles and Accessories
Selecta nozzle holders are the easiest and fastest means
of mounting spray nozzles to booms. Simply drill an
appropriate size hole and clAmp nozzle holder in place.
The range available includes non-drip valves, swivel nozzle
holders, low pressure and high pressure holders and wet
and dry boom nozzle holders.
All are UV light resistant, house most standard size nozzle
tips and feature self aligning quick fit caps for ease of
nozzle cleaning. Applications include boom spraying,
poultry shed lines, car washes, livestock races and
production line cooling. All nozzle holders are supplied less
tip. Merchandise packs of 4 where stated.

Chemsaver Electronic Nozzle body
The Teejet Chemsaver electronic
nozzle body uses a small solenoid to
allow for control over a single nozzle.
Typical application is to fit the end of
the boom, where it can be turned on
and off when needed from the tractor
or vehicle cabin within ¼ of a second.
Its ideal application is for spraying
under fence lines, plantations or wind
breaks where typical spray booms
cannont reach.
The Chemsaver requires a 12 volt
power supply, which can be found on
most vehicles.
• Teejet electric solenoid shut-off valve
• Valve is normally closed for safety
• Coil is rated at 12V, 7 watts
• Maximum current draw of 0.75 Amps
• Valve response time of 0.25 seconds
• All wettable parts are stainless steel
or Viton
• Maximum 100psi (6.8 BAR) spraying
pressure at min voltage 12 volts
Features ChemSaver drip-free shutoff. Requires 10 PSI (0.7 bar) at the

Teejet swivel nozzle bodies are primarily for use with tips employed in row
crop spraying. A locknut holds swivel bodies firmly in position at a selected
spray projection angle so they are not affected by jarring and vibration. For use
at pressures up to 125 PSI (8.6 bar). These are also available in the QJ8600
swivel Quick TeeJet nozzle body assemblies which provide the same spray tip
adjustability of a standard TeeJet threaded swivel plus the quick change and
self-aligning features of the Quick TeeJet System.
