Papoose July05.indd - Lake Mohawk Country Club
A Publication of the Lake Mohawk Country Club Since May 1929 July 2015 • Volume 80, Number 7 PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES - LETTER MID YEAR REPORT 2015 As we mark the end of another school year, it is a good time to report on our own progress at Lake Mohawk Country Club. The Reserve Study Task Force and the Strategic Plan Committees, headed up by Phil Marcellus and Harry O’Grady respectively, presented their recommendations to the Board of Trustees in May. We thank them both, as well as their teams of volunteers. You will hear more about these initiatives in the coming weeks. They are both critical to the legacy and the future of our community. The Capital Reserve Fund is necessary to protect the infrastructure of our community. This fund will ensure that LMCC has the dedicated resources to repair and replace buildings, roads, the Boardwalk and other capital assets. The establishment of this fund will reduce financial shortfalls and surprises for all of us. The Strategic Plan is an outline of the big picture plan for the growth and improvements for our community. This plan will ensure that the Membership, the Board of Trustees, the Management Team and all volunteers are working toward the same goals and share the same vision. You will receive a letter to your home outlining the meeting dates and times to discuss both of these programs, which will be voted on at the Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 7 at 9am. We strongly urge you to attend one or more of these meetings. We need your support and want your feedback. Additional projects that are currently underway include*Thanks to the generous donations from local businesses and our Membership, we have raised nearly $30,000 in donations for our Members Room. Work is underway and we look forward to a great room for all of our members to enjoy! In the interim, do visit the new Mohawk Room. * Work continues on the Upper Beach. The treatment of the lake and hydro-raking will continue throughout the season. Thanks to everyone for their work on this project. This is a top priority for all of us. The Lake Committee, under the direction of Steve Waehler, continues to work on a long term strategy for the care and wellbeing of all of our lakes. *Our goal is to bring all Member accounts current. We have established a monthly billing policy, as well as a more effective collection policy. Having all of these accounts up to date serves all Members. We have also successfully transitioned to an in-house accounting system. Further, all of our Beach, Dock and IntraClubs that are using our tax ID number have been integrated into our accounting system. This makes us more compliant, and will enable us to conduct complete financial audit following the 2015 fiscal year. *The Beaches and Docks have developed a set of Standardized Rules and Regulations to July 2015 ensure compliance with our general liability and Directors and Officers Insurance. Intraclub officers will now be properly insured. *THE PAPOOSE has been redesigned to be more informative, with a cleaner design and format. The new Calendar provides a complete listing all the wonderful things there are for you and your family to enjoy this summer. We welcome your ideas for stories and photos! *Board of Trustee Meetings will now be held on the third Monday of each month at 7:30. All are welcome. Meeting agendas are posted on the Members’ website. Thanks you for your continued support. Please email me or your Board Members with any questions or concerns. Be sure to attend the meetings about the upcoming Capital Reserve Study and Strategic Plan. Until then, stop by the Tiki Bar and come to Lobster Night at the BWC. Enjoy the best view in the world! Best regards, Greg Yuskaitis PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES RECAP 2014 MEETING RESULTS *ELECTRONIC VOTING IMPLEMENTED. Hosted by the LMCC House Committee, there were twelve area restaurants that served their signature menu items. Delicious fare, from smoked pork to brie crepes and jambalaya, was enjoyed by all. A silent auction for restaurant gift certificates and locally donated items was held at the end of the day. Major sponsors for the event included Aquatic Technologies, Princeton Hydro, Stop & Shop, Sussex Bank, US Foods and Wilken & Guttenplan. The Country Club and the House Committee partnered with the Sparta Educational Foundation to include the Dragon Boat Festival. This first ever event at LMCC, benefitted Sparta public schools. There were fortytwo teams and the competition was intense. The beautifully carved boats on the Lake were a spectacular sight. The staff of the Country Club made this combined large event run smoothly and efficiently. The proceeds from the Tasting event provided a scholarship of $500 for continuing the culinary education of a restaurant employee. The drawing was won by Villa Capri II and was awarded by Jay Dunn, House Committee Chairman, to Bill Elig, owner of Villa Capri and to his employee Ryan Dannibale. The remainder of the proceeds was donated to Lake Mohawk Country Club to help fund their “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program, along with a contribution to the Members Room Project. A donation was also given to the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation. The House Committee would like to recognize its many hard-working members who made this event possible: Jay Dunn, Chairman, Judy Dunn, Marilyn Salfelder, Chris Cronin, Joe Wehmayer, Jim Wardell, Jan Wardell, Jim Henderson, Lisa Degraw, Robbie Salfelder, JoAnn Jany, Pattie Cronin and Steve Chase. As always, the efficient LMCC staff made it look easy. • 15 LAKE LIVING NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE Every effort will be made to keep inquiries confidential if requested. Now is the time your Club begins to plan its annual, much anticipated and enjoyed Fourth of July fireworks display. This annual patriotic event, which has been held at Lake Mohawk since its inception, has long enhanced the prestige of Lake Mohawk in the wider community and, indeed, the State of New Jersey. We are all aware of the national economic downturn that has, in one way or another, affected all of us. Though impacted as well, Lake Mohawk, as a result of good leadership and management, is in a sound fiscal state. At the same time, good management practice dictates careful oversight of ancillary activities and expenditures. You would expect no less of us. Accordingly, we are asking you to consider being an active participant in this year’s July 4th fireworks display by making a personal donation to this patriotic and entertaining activity. Our goal this year is $15,000. Thank you and Happy Spring! JAY DUNN, TRUSTEE; CHAIRMAN, HOUSE COMMITTEE I AM PROUD TO DONATE TO THE JULY 4TH FIREWORKS DISPLAY AT LAKE MOHAWK __ Bronze $10.00 __ Silver $25.00 __ Gold $50.00 __ Other Name Address Please make your check payable to Lake Mohawk Country Club and mail to: Lake Mohawk Country Club, 21 The Boardwalk, Sparta, New Jersey 07871 19 o r f F l e o t a a t F d e st 2 e h t 015 e v Sa Boat or float on over to Beach 1 ! e F t s t a ’1 ol 5 F for a day of great music, friends and food! I hope you all had a great holiday and are now happily in full summer mode. Memorial Day was such a fun day at Beach 2. There were so many people swimming, fishing, playing volleyball and just enjoying the holiday with friends. Those being said, please remember that parking is for Beach patrons only! We have had situations where there is no one at the beach and yet the lot is full. This will be monitored and violators will be towed. Also, please be considerate of other beach members. Do not throw cigarette butts in the sand, which is disgusting! Please take home all of your trash and throw it out at home, we do not want any unwanted animals hanging around our beach. Lastly, sand toys and boogie boards are there for the enjoyment of all kids at the beach. Please have your children return all the toys to the shed when they are done playing for the day. If you have not already found us on Facebook please do so. We will keep this page updated with LMCC information as 22 well as local events at our beach. Like us at Facebook.com/ lakemohawkbeach2. Enjoy these lazy days of summer and we will see you at the beach! BEACH 3 Submitted by Martin Slouka A t Along with summer comes a little fun at our beach. I am sure Beach 4 will be hopping, so as usual, remember to be courteous to our neighbors during the celebration. We have a couple of announcements for the upcoming months. On Saturday, July 18th at 3 pm, the beach will be hosting a “Sunsets and Steaks” dinner. Come and join us for some delicious food and beautiful scenery. We hope you all have a W happy Fourth of July and enjoy all our community has to offer to A very important reminder to carry out what you carry in, as July 2015 again the trash has gotten to be too much to handle. Always have your member tags and guest tags/wristbands ready to show lifeguards. Tags are required by LMCC and you will be asked to leave the beach if you do not have them. We implore all parents at the beach to please watch your kids and make sure they are not getting in to trouble or using our amenities inappropriately. We have had some issues last month regarding children who are unattended on the beach, docks, and in the volley ball area. Children are not allowed to use the hammock without an adult present - it is not a swing. Please keep off the new retaining wall. Our brand new playhouse had its roof dented and cracked due to children sitting on top of it, there was damage to a water line, and people have been taking private kayaks from the racks and leaving them on the beach. The kayaks are not for public use - they are not owned by the beach, so if they do not belong to you, please do not use them. We all work very hard to keep our beach clean and provide toys and activities for the kids, so we appreciate your cooperation in maintaining all of the wonderful things our beach has to offer. Finally, we would like to send a big thanks to Curt and the LMCC crew for helping fix the Swim Dock that took a beating over the winter, and another to Jose and his crew at Zeefer Landscaping for completing the Save 600 No Expensive Eyedrops UP TO $ HAVE Cataract Surgery with Dr. Liegner Now you can avoid the hassle of expensive post-op eye drops. Summer is here so relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Thank you to everyone who helped at Beach Clean Up, including Julie for tending to her garden and to July 2015 the Figiel boys for spreading the mulch. My son, Riley, and I finally completed our Earth Day project of collecting recyclables along West Shore. Mike Rennie built another canoe/kayak rack and it is full already. The Vreeland brothers are working hard to maintain the lawn. Thank you Brad and Jake! Awesome teamwork everyone. Thank you to the member donations received thus far – Piccirillo, Alberts, Dennehy, Kelly, Purdon, Jeffrey, Figiel, Burke, Salfelder, Tybur, Roessler, O’Neill, Sweet, Cote, Greenberg, M. Vreeland, Gorvan, Mackay, O’Krepky, Puglio, L. Kelly, and Somma via Paypal. Even though Mike and Katie Dennehy are the proud parents of new baby Madison, Mike continues to be our Treasurer so it is not too late to contribute. All residents should have received the summer newsletter; if you did not email [email protected]. The Ice Cream Sale at Sparta Day was a success. Thank you Dan Purdon for spearheading, to the Vreeland and Miller girls for selling, and to Jamie Rennie, who according to Dan, watched over the money box like a Brinks Guard. The Pie Contest at the Memorial Day Picnic was also a hit. A great group of bakers but Tanya Tybur took the prize with a creamy, dreamy, gooey, caramel creation. Thank you Pivko’s for judging! LMCC for a superb Tasting on the Boardwalk and to the SEF for an absolute phenomenal Dragon Boat event. Kudos to our team – OARganized Chaos – who took first place in the first race and third in the next race to finish a surprising 9th overall. We rock! We are looking forward to next year. and hope I get it right. But if our history holds true I do not think it is much of a gamble to say that the first party of the summer was a blast. I hope everyone had a chance to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. Keep an eye on the bulletin board, as well as Facebook, for more happenings at the beach. SLB Members: the beach is reserved on July 4th for you. The fire permit is in the glass case on the shed. Please follow the instructions before lighting one. Remember take all your trash ¬with you. It is a good idea to always have your LMCC ID and beach tags/guest wristbands regardless of where you are in the reservation. Thank you to everyone who has made their beach contribution this year, and for those who have not; it is still a mere $45.00 per family for the whole year..…what a deal! HAPPY VALLEY Submitted by Eric Takach S ince these articles are written a month in advance I sometimes have to take a chance and predict what may happen at the beach, Life guards are now full time and will be enforcing the beach tag policy, so please make sure to have the appropriate member and guest tags when visiting the beach. Lastly, I appreciate everyone’s efforts for keeping the beach clean and organized when you leave, it is a big help. • HAPPY SUMMER! • I also want to congratulate the 25 LAKE LIVING INTRACLUBS YACHT CLUB Submitted by Donald Okner n May 17 sailors gathered and readied their boats but were met with light air that precluded racing. However, May 24 proved to be more accommodating and three Lightning’s competed in two races in which Rich Miner won two firsts followed by Perry Anderson in both races and our newest skipper, Peter Breiling, third. Peter is sailing Tattoo, previously owned by Chuck Chute, who now is concentrating his efforts on his establishment, Black Rock Fine Wine and Craft Beer in Idaho Falls. We wish Peter the best with his “new” boat and Chuck with his new venture. Don Okner crewed for Peter on May 24 because Don’s boat was in “dry dock” with a jib halyard lost in the mast. Fortunately, due to the efforts of Perry Anderson and Don, the jib halyard was retrieved in time for racing on May 31. But alas, a rain storm followed by calm air once again and caused a cancellation of racing. The LMYC was homeport for the 1938 World Champion Snipe skipper, Charles Gabor, in whose memory we still hold our annual Gabor Cup Regatta. This year, June 7 was the date for the regatta followed by the Hawaiian Tiki Makani Party. More about that in next month’s article as this article went to press before the regatta and party. This is the first time the Holland Team is hosting the event and it should be a great time. We have a new Ski Team joining us from Maine, we love new challenges! Just a quick note, we also want to take a moment to remind our fellow boaters that safety is everyone’s responsibility. While we welcome everyone to come to the Boardwalk area to watch us ski, we ask you do so safely, especially if you are arriving by boat. Please be aware of our boats and skiers during practices on O Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:00pm until sundown and Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9am until noon. From my perspective the only thing more important to George was his family - wife Margaret and daughter Meave. It is difficult to separate the work he did for this community from the accomplishments of Fran. We all owe him and the work he put into this community a great deal of respect and gratitude. My sympathies go out to Margaret and Meave. George will be missed by many of us. I, Ed Maske, always regarded George as an outstanding member of our legal community. Both his knowledge of the law and his application of the law were exceptional. Like me, George was an avid history buff and when we weren’t talking law, we were probably discussing the Civil War. One of my fondest memories of George is when he came to visit me in the Union Army camp in Gettysburg at a reenactment 20 years ago. George was an honest and sincere man, who always sought to do the right thing. I will miss him greatly. He was truly one of nature’s noblemen. I, David L. Colfax, was lucky enough to get to know George, his wife Margaret, daughter Meave and his assistant Maureen Rezny as a result of sharing an offi ce with him these past 4 years. George was a champion for the little guy, a resolute believer in the truth, had a brilliant legal mind and was a good man. He actually loved the practice of law, as much as he loved to cook and garden. But the true joy in his life was spending time with his friends, going to New York to visit Meave and his vacations abroad and at Cape Cod with Margaret. While he will be missed and certainly passed away before his time, George lived his life on his terms and to its fullest every day. I, Will Hookway, knew George for a long time, but we became close friends in recent years sharing common interests such as railroading and cooking. George and I rode together in my trackcar on the Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad and the rail through the Lycoming Valley in PA, enjoying the unique trip and taking many photos of the sights along the rail. I introduced George to Les Marmitons and we always enjoyed our monthly drive, and sometimes challenging conversations, to the dinner meetings. Traveling to the dinners will never be the same with that empty seat - I’ll miss him very much. But… George, I’ll eat your share of the dessert! I, David Dumbroff, Esq., met George in 1990 when I began practicing law in Sussex County. Jogging by his office, I would stop in to get guidance on a particular matter I was handling. On other occasions I would stop by his house for perfectly made sandwiches and a moment to just chat. George was a great friend and on occasion has literally given me the shirt off his back. What always struck me about George was his unwavering ethical commitment. He was always a great resource, both knowledgeable and practical. One of the things I always enjoyed about George was his sense of humor which was absolutely fantastic. I recently spent some time with George and while together I mentioned that I had a closing with his office and legal staff, telling him that Margaret did a great job and everything went through smoothly. George held up his hand in a fist and said she was his rock. I will always have that memory of him holding his hand in a fist. I continue to receive guidance from George - I often find myself looking at his real estate attorney review letter which helps me better represent my clients. This will always be part of George’s legacy - his love for his wife and daughter, his many friends and his commitment and lasting influence on the legal community. I, Harry O’Grady, have known George for over 20 years and worked with him closely on Financial issues at the Club. He tirelessly provided his expertise and hard work to support LMCC and make it what it is today. George cared deeply for this community and always provided keen legal advice. He and his wife Suzie married and later moved to Lake Mohawk in 1981. The Beierle Family has enjoyed a long history here. Jack’s father, Russell was a Pay Master for the construction work crews that built the original homes around the Lake. A plaque honoring Russell Beierle is on permanent display adjacent to the Boardwalk clock. Russ and his wife Mary raised their family here on Lake Mohawk. In addition to Jack, four of their five daughters raised their families here and continued the tradition of the Lake Mohawk lifestyle. Jack and Suzie also made Lake Mohawk their family home and that Lakeview home is still the gathering place for all of their children and their grandchildren. Suzette, their daughter and her husband Gene and daughter Elizabeth visit often, but always for the July 4th holiday. Son Jackie and his wife Mary live in Sparta with their son, Brent. Son Fred lives and works in New York City, and often retreats to the Lake for a weekend visit. Suzie says that the summer at the Lake is her favorite time, filled with tradition. She particularly loves the Parade and the Ski Hawks Show. “The 4th of July fireworks get better each year” she says. The family enjoys the sunsets while dining with family and friends at the Boardwalk Club. “When driving down Winona Parkway with its flowering trees, lake style buildings and shops…it reminds me of how special Lake Mohawk is to my whole family,” adds Beierle. • 37 N years SEE HOW AFFORDABLE A PRIVATE GOLF CLUB REALLY IS! All beaches close at 10 PM. BEACH TAGS: Tags/wristbands are required for all and will be strictly enforced. Guest wristbands can be purchased at the club office during normal business hours. When the office is closed, the Boardwalk Club cashier will have a limited quantity for purchase. MEMBERS MUST BE WITH THEIR GUESTS. NEW BEACH SIGNS: NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY signs have been removed and replaced by smaller but more detailed signs. These new signs are more reflective of our community, lake style and culture. Our beaches are private and for our members and their guests only. Therefore, beach tags are required. The club staffs our beaches with Lifeguards from 12 noon to 6PM daily. In order to make sure that our members, their guests and anyone else entering onto our beaches are advised, we have posted new signs. These signs state: “Beach Tags are required. Swimming/Bathing is permitted only at designated protected beaches. Lifeguards are on duty between 12 noon and 6 PM daily. Swimming/Bathing at any other time is discouraged and is at your own risk. A protected beach is one with a manned lifeguard stand. If the stand is not manned, the beach is not a protected beach.” These signs will be located in two places at each beach, one at an entrance and another on the back of the Lifeguard stand. These will be in place from mid-June, when we begin staffing full 40 time until Labor Day. From the day after Labor Day until mid-October, the NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY signs will go back up. These will stay up at all the beaches until we put up our Ice Warning signs. When the Ice Warning signs come down (hopefully in early April!!!!!!) the NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY signs will go back up. We feel that this will offer our members guidance in using our facilities. It will also offer a warning to our members when the beaches are not staffed due to inclement weather, emergencies or inadequate staffing during the latter part of the season as well as during the off season periods. Our Lifeguards will announce that they are going off duty at 6PM and ask for everyone to exit the water. They will record the number of people left on the beach at 6PM and then leave. Swimming and bathing is always at your own risk. We thank you for your support and cooperation. BEACH PARTIES: Each Beach Association has their own Beach Party policy and procedure. However, every Beach or Private Party function must be registered with the Waterfront Director. This is necessary for proper staffing for the event. A Beach and Private Party Registration form is available on line on the club’s website. This form must be submitted at least seven (7) days prior to the event to ensure proper staffing. BIMINI TOPS FOR LIFEGUARD CHAIRS: The East Shore Beaches 2, 4, 5 and 6 traditionally get beaten with sun and wind. We lose umbrellas at these beaches during the summer. Despite gallons of sun block, our Lifeguards suffer a little. In cooperation with Danforth’s, they helped design bimini tops for our Lifeguard chairs. Hopefully, these will be strong enough to sustain the winds and protect our Lifeguards who protect our swimmers. Thanks to Diana and Scott at Danforth’s for helping with this project. July 2015 JULY 4TH FIREWORKS: Once the fireworks begin, all swimmers should be out of the water and in their boats. This is for your safety. During the fireworks, our busiest boating night, swimmers may not be seen by boaters arriving late and trying to find a good spot to watch the show. Be safe and enjoy the show. SWIM LESSONS AND JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING: Please be advised that these programs are conducted Monday through Friday at Beach 1 and Boardwalk from 9 to 11:30 AM from June 29th to August 7th. We ask boaters to please be careful and considerate in this area during those times. MARINE PATROL: The Marine Patrol will be checking boat tags at docks, the Boardwalk and the Marina. Letters will be sent out by the office to those who have expired or no tags. The Marine Patrol will issue warnings first, but if it comes from the office, 1st offense is 50% of your boat registration fee, 2nd offense is 100% and 3rd offense is appearance in front of the Marine Services Adjudication Board. Since this new fine system has been in place in 2013, our compliance rate has increased dramatically. Violations went down from 195 violations to app.40 last year. Thank you for your compliance. There have been reports from some of our vigilant members of nonmembers launching kayaks into our lake. All boats, kayaks, canoes, SUPs, etc. need to have an LMCC boat tag displayed. WATERFRONT LIFEGUARDING COURSE: The Waterfront Lifeguarding course will be conducted for LMCC members only beginning with the prerequisite testing on July 10th. The course will run Monday through Thursday, 8AM to 12 noon from July 13th to July 23rd. The fee for this course is $200.00. Candidates must be at least 15 years old by the end of the course. Please contact Rich Carlson at [email protected] for registration. NAVIGATION BUOYS: Please notify the Marine Patrol if any Navigation Buoy seems out of place. Please pay attention to these regulatory buoys. There are over 75 Navigation buoys on the lake. VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS: If you missed the Vessel Safety Check at the Marina last month, you can contact Rich Carlson at [email protected] and schedule one. These are free, usually taking about 10-15 minutes and upon successful inspection, you may be able to get a discount on your boat insurance. STAND UP PADDLEBOARDS: USCG now defines SUPs as vessels and need to adhere to the state and federal regulations. PFDs must be worn for those under 13. PFDs must be available for all others while on SUP. Inflatables are good if worn by 16 and over. BRIDGE: Bridge jumpers will be reported to the Trustees and Marine Services Adjudication Board for action. This is dangerous and causes liability to the club. Nonmembers may be charged with trespassing. FACEBOOK PAGE: The Marine Services maintains a Facebook page. We continually update it with safety information, lake and beach conditions, weather advisories, swim lesson cancellations, and beach closings. Feel free to visit us. • ATTENTION SKIERS PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SKIING IS NOT ALLOWED BETWEEN THE NORTH END OF MANITOU ISLAND AND ECHO ISLAND. Many of our members are getting on the water with their boards for the first time. It’s great, it’s fun, but do you know what you need to have and do to be legal on the water? The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has determined that SUP boards operated outside a surfing, swimming or bathing area are “vessels” under USCG regulations. The following refers to what that means for you when you’re outside those areas. LIFE JACKETS: • Each paddler 13 years of age or older must have a USCG-approved Type I, II, III, or appropriate Type V (see below) life jacket. It doesn’t have to be worn, although that’s certainly the wisest plan, and one which we strongly recommend. • A child 12-years old or younger must wear their USCG-approved life jacket. • The jacket must be in “serviceable condition,” without rips, tears or deterioration that will diminish its performance. • The jacket must be of an appropriate size and fit for the wearer. • A Type V jacket can be used as long as it’s USCG-approved and applicable for the activity. • Belt pouch-type inflatable PFDs must be worn on the person to meet the life jacket regulation. For other types of inflatable PFDs, check the approval description printed on the unit for restrictions. You must be at least 16 years old to wear an inflatable PFD. • For all life jackets, be sure to read the label to know if special requirements pertain to that device. OTHER REQUIRED GEAR: • A whistle or other sound producing device must be carried to warn other boaters. • If you’re on the water after sunset, you need to have a flashlight, or similar lighting device, to warn other boaters. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: • As the operator of a vessel, you need to follow the Navigation Rules. • You also must register your SUP with LMCC and obtain a valid boat tag. This tells us that the SUP belongs on the lake and if found, we can locate the owner. • However, according to the NJ State Police Marine Bureau, the state of NJ classifies the • SUP as a water sport activity, such as surfing. Therefore, at this time the State of • NJ does not require a PFD on a SUP. Even though the state of NJ does not require a PFD on a SUP, we would encourage those participating in the SUP activity to have a PFD somewhere on the SUP. • Remember, on a SUP board you’re about the most vulnerable person on the water. Watch out for power boats and other crafts; use your signaling devices to help them spot you. • Wearing brightly colored life jackets and apparel in well traveled waterways can be a life saver. Have a great time on the water and above all, boat safe! Attention All Boaters! WARNING AT THE SPILLWAY THE MOUTH OF THE SPILLWAY IS VERY LARGE. WHEN BOATING IN THE AREA OF THE SPILLWAY BE AWARE OF THE WARNING BUOYS AND DO NOT GO PAST THEM. YOU CANNOT SEE FROM YOUR CRAFT, BUT THERE ARE LARGE ROCKS AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE SPILLWAY. ENTERING THIS AREA IS HAZARDOUS AND IS PROHIBITED. 43 44 July 2015 LAKE SAFETY PADDLE SAFE T here has been an increase in paddle sports on the Lake, Paddlers have to know the rules for boating safely. The number one rule is that a PFD/ lifejacket is required to be readily accessible, this means that if you are not wearing the lifejacket it must be within arm’s reach. It is best to wear the lifejacket, especially during busy days, inclement weather and night time. Consider it like wearing a bicycle helmet or wearing a seat belt in a car. Kayaks, canoes and other paddlers should never assume that powerboats can see you on the water, always watch out for power boats. Keep a sound signaling device such as a whistle handy in order to attract attention if needed. At night a white light must be shown toward oncoming boat traffic. Paddlers may carry either a flashlight or lighted lantern that can show a white light in sufficient time to prevent a collision. This is both a federal and state regulation. Always make sure that you tell someone where and when you are paddling, also weather changes quickly so you must get to I F C shore as quickly as possible. Paddle together, it is sometimes more fun and enjoyable when paddling alongside someone or in a group. • WEAR YOUR LIFEJACKET • WATCH OUT FOR POWER BOATS • WATCH THE WEATHER • HAVE A WHISTLE OR SOUND SIGNAL HANDY • ALWAYS HAVE A LIGHT AT NIGHT OR DUSK • ALL POWER BOATS MUST HAVE LIGHTS ON AT NIGHT. Keep Your Children Safe ANY CHILD TWELVE YEARS OF AGE AND UNDER MUST WEAR A PROPERLY FITTED U.S. COAST GUARD APPROVED PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE (PFD) WHENEVER THE VESSEL THEY ARE ON IS UNDERWAY.
