Decatur: One of
Georgia’s Best Cities
The City of Decatur was incorporated on December 10, 1823, just one year after the incorporation of DeKalb County, and was designated as
the county seat. The city is named for Commodore Stephen Decatur, who won fame as a naval
hero in his battles against the Barbary pirates at
Tripoli.
The City of Decatur is four square miles in
size and has a population of 17,800, though its
daytime population swells to 22,000. Decatur
has more than 100 restaurants and shops and
was named Best Mall Alternative, Intown by
Atlanta Magazine in its 19th annual “Best of
Atlanta” competition. Decatur was also named
one of the state’s 10 “Cities of Excellence” by
the Georgia Municipal Association and Georgia
Trend. The award honors the best managed,
most livable cities in Georgia.

The “shingle” represents what we do as
business people in Decatur, regardless of occupation. A shingle connotes a small-town way
of conducting business, trading with friends,
neighbors and passersby.
The acronym “DBA” also stands for “doing
business as.”
The association’s initials are set in the same
logotype used in the City of Decatur logo,
familiar to all within the community.

Association. I hope you find this year’s Decatur Business
Association Directory useful. You’ll see lots more business
DBA President
ads and new members. I encourage you to use the DBA diNeil Dobbs
rectory as your primary resource when you need a merchant
or service. Practically every type of business is represented in the DBA. Whether
you are on the Square, over in Oakhurst or in a shop on East or West Ponce,
you’ll find a business committed to a quality product and personal service.
Membership is open to any business or individual that is interested in the development of Decatur. The strength of our community is based on the viability
of our institutions, both governmental and educational, our citizens and our
businesses. All three are needed and must work together to maintain Decatur’s
vibrancy. Our members give back to the community not only through financial
support but also with the time and hard work they devote to our activities and
events. The community in turn supports our businesses when they do business
with our local merchants.
Our commitment is shown in the close work we do both with the City of Decatur and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority on the many events
and activities.
The Decatur Business Association, through our Education Committee, works
with the City Schools of Decatur in providing tutors for the Partners in Education. We also sponsor the Decatur Education Foundation Book Club, which
provides the funds for students in kindergarten through second grade to buy
books they might not otherwise be able to purchase. The program hopes to instill
a life-long love of reading.
You can help by becoming involved. Come to a DBA meeting, which is usually
the fourth Tuesday of the month at different locations around the city. Patronize
our businesses. Volunteer at one of the many DBA-sponsored functions. Any
one of these three activities really supports the entire community. If you are

Mission
DBA is a membership organization representing businesses, professionals,
financial institutions, arts groups, associated agencies, organizations and private
individuals who share an interest in promoting the city of Decatur. We work with
the Decatur Downtown Development Authority as advocates for the business
interests of the city and promote Decatur as a unique, thriving, small-town experience in metro Atlanta.
Meetings
DBA meets on the fourth Tuesday each month at different locations within the
city of Decatur. The November and December meetings are combined for a special holiday party and held the first Tuesday in December. Meetings begin at 5:15
p.m. with a networking reception. The program begins at 6 p.m. Members receive
monthly reminder emails with the location, sponsor of the meeting, and details
about the scheduled program.
Special Events
The DBA sponsors and supports a full calendar of events, including the Decatur
Beach Party, the association’s annual fundraiser. Other events include Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Easter Egg Hunt, and Breakfast With
Santa. Volunteers are needed for these festivals and events. The DBA also presents the Thomas O. Davis Public Service Award every year to a Decatur public
servant who exemplifies the finest qualities of citizenship. Call 404-371-8386 for

Ongoing Committees
The DBA invites members to get involved in the community by joining ongoing
volunteer committees.
The Membership Committee helps secure new members, welcomes new members, answers questions about membership, and works on ad sales for the DBA
directory.
The Education Committee works in partnership with the City Schools of Decatur
to provide partners in education, mentors and tutoring.

to purchase books for their children to
read and enjoy at home. To make it possible for more Decatur children to own
books, the Decatur Business Association, in partnership with the Decatur
Education Foundation, established the
Book Club Fund. We want to ensure
that all of Decatur’s kindergarteners,
first and second graders, can purchase a
book for their home libraries.

Meetings are free to members and their guests. Business card exchange/networking
begins at 5:15 p.m. Program starts at 6 p.m. Program topics vary, and meetings are
