The local Chamber of Commerce is calling on community
members who oppose President Barack Obama’s proposed
expansion of the Pacific Remote Islands National Marine
Monument to send letters of opposition to the President by this
Friday, the deadline to submit public comments.
While there will be no local hearings on the proposal — which
is opposed by the Honolulu-based Western Pacific Regional
Fishery Management Council — a public hearing on the issue
was held in Honolulu Monday, said Nate Ilaoa, who is the
Council’s coordinator in the territory. He said the U.S. National
Marine Fishery Service (NMFS) coordinated the hearing.
He said the Council has been working with the local government and others in the community requesting both the
White House and the NMFS for a local town hall meeting on
this issue so the public can voice their opinion.
“We asked why a town hall meeting was only afforded to
Hawai’i but not American Samoa,” Ilaoa told Samoa News yesterday. “What we have been trying to make the federal government aware of, is that the majority of our people would like to
share their verbal comments, as many of them don’t have access
to the Internet or computers to file their comments online.”

When the local search and rescue team found
the remains of Haris Suleman, hours after the
single-engine plane that he piloted crashed into
the waters off American Samoa, the 17-year
old Indiana teenager “was strapped to a seat
cushion” and there were “burn marks on the
body,” according to the report on a preliminary
federal investigation of the July 22 crash.
The report by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) also says Haris’
father, Babar Suleman, was warned by an
unidentified ground crewman of unstable
weather conditions that day and into the evening hours, before the plane took off from Pago
Pago International Airport.
While the preliminary report was released
yesterday, NTSB investigator Howard Plagens
said the federal probe is ongoing. “General aviation accident investigations can take about six
months to a year depending on each case and
what we need,” Plagens, who is the lead NTSB
investigator in the Suleman crash, told Samoa
News via phone from California.
He also said that he worked with territorial
authorities in the federal probe and that all evidence pertaining to the plane crash collected by
the Department of Public Safety remains in the
territory at this point, but gave no time frame as
to when it will be sent to the mainland.
“All personal items discovered will be turned
over to the Suleman family while any part of the
plane wreckage recovered will be turned over
to the owner of the aircraft,” Plagens said yesterday morning.
Federal Aviation Administration records show
that the aircraft, manufactured in 1976 was registered to Cyrus Air LLC of Plainfield, Indiana.
As previously reported by Samoa News all
items collected from the plane crash by the
search and rescue team, led by DPS Marine
Patrol Division, have been tagged and placed in
the DPS evidence room for federal investigators. While the Haris’ body was found hours
after the plane crash, his father is still missing.

Members of a family of 13 from Gataivai whose home was
destroyed two weeks ago during the flooding and landslides
received a large donation yesterday especially for the kids in
the family. Samoa News staff spearheaded the drive and along
with our readers and advertisers, who were touched by a Samoa
News story that told how the family escaped only with the
clothes on their backs and now have no home to return to — put
together toys, school supplies and clothing for the young ones.
Mrs. Rosalia Mulu, who was interviewed by Samoa News
the day after the landslide, says her entire family of 13 is now
housed at the CCCAS Fagatogo Hall and the government has
been providing support with three meals a day.
Also pitching in is the local chapter of the American Red
Cross and others in the community providing bedding, clothing
and other basic needs.
However, one main issue faced by the family with several
children — six of them belonging to Mrs. Mulu and her husband — is the need to get clothes for the children. “So what we
are doing now is that my children are given the adult t-shirts for
them to wear for the whole day but then at night, I’m concerned
with the cold,” she said. “So we need clothes for the children.”
After hearing last Friday afternoon from Mrs. Mulu —
Samoa News employees stepped forward to help, knowing that
the family’s future is unknown while school will be starting
soon, and the children have no appropriate clothes for school.

THE AM. SAMOA NATIONAL ANTHEM
A House resolution was introduced yesterday
calling on Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga
to address the people of American Samoa
regarding the incorrect singing of the American
Samoa national anthem, and to mandate the
territory’s anthem “Amerika Samoa” be sung
properly. According to the resolution, sponsored by Puletu Dick Koko, “Amerika Samoa”
was officially adopted in 1950 as American
Samoa’s territorial anthem, and it was composed by Napeleon Andrew Tuiteleleapaga
and written by Mariota Tiumalu Tuiasosopo to
identify our history, traditions and our people.
The purpose of the anthem is to give the
people of American Samoa something familiar
to rally behind, whether that it be a cultural
event, the Olympics, or war— it is something
that we as people of American Samoa hold
sacred and divine according to the resolution.
It also says that when the national anthem is
sung, it evokes love for our country and reminds
us what being patriotic is all about. The hope is
that when the time comes and our country needs
us, our national anthem will be a reminder of
what is at stake, and our duty to our country.
“It is important for our anthem to be sung
correctly and for the past several years the
singing of the Amerika Samoa anthem has
been altered. In its original composition the
last stanza “Tautua ma punou ia lou malo ia
manuia ia ulu ola, Amerika Samoa, ole malo
ole sa’olotoga” is sung twice or repeated.
“Currently this last stanza is sung only once.
It is imperative that this is corrected and that
Amerika Samoa imparts a national sense of
unity, and it should be sung and taught as it was
composed so that out future generations will
sing the national anthem proudly to represent
and inspire patriotism for the territory.”
This resolution has been assigned to the
House Rules Committee.

Budget Committee Chairman, Timusa Tini
Lam Yuen, does not chair some of the budget
hearings. She said “with all due respect to the
Senate side, (Maota o Tama) why can’t our
Budget Chair, chair the budget hearings?”
The Speaker responded that Timusa will be
in charge for some of the hearings, and maybe
he was not given that chance last year because
he’s new at being in charge of the budget and
appropriations committee.
RESOLUTION FOR SWAINS REP
TO VOTE IN HOUSE, AGAIN
RETURNED TO COMMITTEE
The joint resolution by nine representatives
to amend the constitution to provide the right to
vote for the delegate from Swains Island in the
Fono has been returned to committee. This was
after several lawmakers raised concerns that
there are so many issues that need to be sorted
before they proceed on voting on this resolution.
During a committee meeting yesterday after
the regular session, House Vice Speaker Talia
I’aulualo Fa’afetai pointed out that this measure
should be discussed as it should be reported to the
House floor for a second reading vote due to time
constraints and the Fono is nearing their closing.
Manu’a faipule, Fetu Fetui adamantly said
that if the Fono moves to amend the constitution
to allow the Swains Delegate to vote, the residents of Swains should also be given the right to
register to vote, and whoever wants to run from
Swains must register the same as every faipule.
Rep Pulele’iite Tufele Li’amatua Jr. pointed
out that there’s one family — the Jennings
family — from Swains, and if they allow the
registration of candidates for Swains Island this
would not be beneficial for the family, as it will
disturb the peace within the family.
Rep Faimealelei Anthony Allen motioned
to allow the resolution be brought for a second
reading. Swains Island Representative Su’a
Alexander Eli Jennings said during yesterday’s committee hearing that there should be
no amendments added to the resolution, and
pointed out that Attorney General Talauega
Eleasalo Ale said amending the constitution
allowing for Swains to vote in the Fono is only
the beginning, as more will come in this matter.
He further pointed out the Bill of Rights is also
very clear that we can make any law that protects land, culture and traditions without violating the constitution. A vote was called for this resolution to be
returned to the committee and the motion was
approved with a vote by 11 lawmakers.
As reported earlier by Samoa News, Swains’
faipule Jennings said “by forcing Swains Island
to put the Delegate up for popular vote without
granting a selected seat in the Senate, I feel this
violates its constitutional right as an unincorporated Territory of the U.S.” Jennings told Samoa News the selection of the
Swains Island Delegate,” is similar to selecting
the Senators — to protect the land, culture and tradition of Swains Island. Allowing it to be put up
for popular vote (as suggested) is like demanding
that our senators be put up for popular vote.”

Aina escaped jail time, but was
slapped with a $5,000 fine for
his role in allowing inmates
to leave the Tafuna Correctional facility for a beer run to
a nearby store.
In October last year Chief
Justice Michael Kruse postponed the sentencing of former
officer Aina for six months, but
did not specify the reason for
his decision at the time. Aina
was one of two police officers
charged on allegations they
allowed inmates at the TCF to
go on a beer run to a nearby
store. Aina has pled guilty to
permitting escape.

Rocky Tua were arrested last
July and were out on bail of
$15,000 on charges of aiding
the escape of a prisoner, permitting escape, and public servant acceding to corruption.
Aina pled guilty to permitting escape and the remaining
charges were dismissed; however Tua fought his case before
a jury, and he was acquitted of
all charges following a threeday jury trial.
Last year Aina apologized
for his actions, noting that he
failed to carry out the oath
that he had sworn to uphold.
He said he also failed the oath
“made to my wife and children, which has led me before
the court.” Aina noted that
he’s remorseful for his actions,
and asked the court for another
chance, pointing out that his
household consists of him
and his wife, and their three
children. He further stated his
wife just started working while
he stays home and looks after
their three minor children.
His wife took the stand and
pleaded with the court to allow
her husband a second chance,
as she just started working as
a teacher. During sentencing last week
Kruse noted that there are a lot
of issues at the TCF pointed
out in the probation report, and
when such issues are brought
forth, the court questions who
really runs the jail — whether
it’s the police or the inmates.
He further stated that with the
problems revealed at TCF,
Aina is the only officer who
was caught, and the only
officer who has admitted to his
actions at the jail.
Kruse said that when he
postponed this matter for six
months it was to allow the
defendant to work with the
government and see in what
ways Aina could assist with the
problems at the jail. Assistant
Attorney General Tony Graf
was questioned about Aina’s
cooperation with the government within the six months
and the answer was yes, he did
cooperate.
During the sentencing last
year, Fiti Sunia who represents
Aina, pointed out the defendant is a good candidate for
probation, given he’s a first
time offender and he’s a contributing member of society.
Sunia also stated that Aina
took full responsibility for his
actions and he didn’t place the
blame on anyone but himself.

“Road Marshal”
considers himself ‘a Director’
Says his car is on 24-hour pass

“I consider myself a director for the Road Marshal’s Division
with the governor’s office and the government vehicle assigned
to me has a 24 hour pass,” was the response by Road Marshal
Alu Fa’amasino, following accusations that he’s using the Road
Marshal vehicle as his personal car.
Samoa News received calls from residents of Pago Pago and
government employees who were out jogging in the morning
around the area where Fa’amasino works at his radio morning
show, saying that it’s not fair that he’s supposed to be patrolling the main road for government cars, yet he’s using the ASG
vehicle to get to his part-time job.
Fa’amasino confirmed that he does work in the morning on a
local radio station in Pago Pago village — at 6am — but before
he goes to the radio station, he’s patrolling the highways around
4am. He says that after his three-hour morning show, he goes
right back to patrolling for government vehicles.
He explained that he’s a political appointee working 24 hours
so his car is seen all the time on the road. Fa’amasino also said
that aside from monitoring government vehicles, he also looks
out for government buildings whose workers have forgotten to
turn off their lights after hours.
To date there are now three road marshals, one for the east,
one for the west, and Fa’amasino who roams in the central area.
OTHER ASG VEHICLE ISSUES
Fa’amasino said he’s glad Governor Lolo M. Moliga is back,
as a majority of the departments are deviating from vehicle policies. “In a majority of the departments, the directors are allowing
their deputies to take the ASG car home, but from the beginning
Lolo strongly emphasized in writing and verbally that only directors take their cars home.”
He told Samoa News yesterday that since Lolo took office he
has put his foot down on the abuse of government vehicles and
the directors need to take heed of that mandate.
Fa’amasino pointed out that in August of last year, Lolo threatened to terminate government employees who continue to violate the government vehicle policies in place and he also issued
a memo saying that directors will be held personally responsible
for any reported violation.
“But it’s sad that the directors are the ones allowing this abuse
to continue,” said Fa’amasino. He also pointed out that others
who are not following the governor’s mandates are in the governor’s office, but he declined to name anyone directly.

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State
John Kerry paid a visit Wednesday to the Solomon Islands in
the South Pacific, where he met the tiny nation’s leaders and
commemorated the ferocious World War II battles fought on
Guadalcanal.
Kerry met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Lilo
and Governor General Frank Kabui to discuss sustainable development, ocean preservation and how the islands’ 600,000 residents are coping with the effects of climate change.
Kerry laid a wreath at the Solomon Scouts and Coastwatchers
Memorial, which pays tribute to Allied personnel and island
natives who observed Japanese movement in the Pacific Ocean
during World War II. It was those scouts who rescued Navy Lt.
John F. Kennedy and his crew after the sinking of PT-109 in
August 1943. Kerry, who’s from Kennedy’s home state, Massachusetts, told Kabui, “We are very tied to you in many ways,
certainly from my part of the country.”
Kerry then visited the Guadalcanal American Memorial,
where he met two American veterans of the U.S. campaign that
began Allied operations against Japanese forces in 1942.
“This was the first moment, right here at Guadalcanal, where
the United States turned from the preparation and aftereffect of
Pearl Harbor into the offensive juggernaut that it became,” Kerry
said. He added, “The tide of battle turned right here.”
Kerry wrapped up his short visit with a trip to the “Bloody
Ridge” battlefield, where some of the fiercest combat in the
Pacific theater took place between American and Japanese forces
in September 1942.
He then left for Honolulu, where he will visit U.S. Pacific
Command headquarters Wednesday night.

DOE CONDUCTING SURVEY
FOR E-RATE APPLICATION
The American Samoa Department of Education Consortium - consisting of public and private schools - is seeking assistance from parents
and legal guardians of students enrolled in the
upcoming school year, regarding the completion of survey forms that will be handed out to
the students to take home when school starts.
Students of Manumalo Baptist Academy
were given theirs on Monday. The information
provided in the survey is, according to a letter
signed by Director of Education Vaitinasa Dr.
Salu Hunkin-Finau, “an absolute requirement
of ASDOE’s E-rate application.”
She explained, “This data is necessary and
crucial so that students, public, and private
schools, receive the services to access the
internet and other telecommunications services
in our schools.” She said the number of surveys
turned in “will determine the eligibility ASDOE
is entitled (or not entitled) to, regarding the
internet usage at all our schools.”
Vaitinasa reminds all parents that information and data provided will be kept confidential
and all surveys are to be submitted no later than
Sept. 30, 2014.
The ASDOE Consortium is required by the
Universal Service Administration Company
(USAC) to complete an annual survey.
Questions on the survey include family size,
household income, and whether or not the individual families are eligible for food stamps, the
National School Lunch Program (NSLP), and
medical assistance under Medicaid.

Clinton is making her presence felt on President Barack
Obama’s summer vacation — in more ways than one.
The potential 2016 presidential candidate happens to be
holding a signing of her memoir from her time as Obama’s
secretary of state Wednesday on Martha’s Vineyard, where her
former boss is on a two-week getaway from Washington.
And while the commander in chief has been trying to balance
leisure time while engaging in global crises, Clinton weighed in
with a magazine interview that distanced herself from some of
his handling of foreign policy.
Clinton called the president at his vacation home Tuesday
to tell him she wasn’t trying to attack him. And her spokesman
says she plans on “hugging it out” with Obama when both are
scheduled to attend an island party Wednesday night for Ann
Jordan, wife of Democratic adviser Vernon Jordan.
The White House initially said Obama didn’t plan to see
Clinton while she was on the island. But after Clinton’s critical
interview was published, the White House said Obama decided
to go to the party.
Clinton, who carried out Obama’s diplomacy in his first term,
described a different approach she would take in places like
Syria and the Mideast and rebuked Obama’s cautious approach
to global crises.
“Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘don’t
do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle,” she told The
Atlantic, referring to a version of the phrase Obama and his
advisers have used privately to describe his approach to foreign
policy.
Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said Clinton has frequently
touted Obama’s achievements and was honored to be part of his
team, despite some differences.
“Some are now choosing to hype those differences but they
do not eclipse their broad agreement on most issues,” Merrill
said in a written statement Tuesday. “Like any two friends who
have to deal with the public eye, she looks forward to hugging it
out when they see each other tomorrow night.”
Clinton’s signing of “Hard Choices” is scheduled at the
Bunch of Grapes bookstore, an independent shop that Obama
often visits to pick up some vacation reading.

last week on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of
a minor.
A phone listing for Talley
could not be found, and police
records didn’t indicate whether
she had a lawyer.
In the past month or so, the
“fire challenge” has increased
in popularity on the Internet.
Participants are supposed to
pour flammable liquids on
themselves and set themselves ablaze, hopefully extinguishing the flames before they
burn the skin.
But it can go wrong easily.
People panic when the flames
quickly spread and aren’t
immediately
extinguished,
then forget to douse themselves with water. Running
also gives the flames more
oxygen to grow. Superheated
air can be inhaled, burning the
inside of the lungs.
Clothes can catch fire on
parts of the body not protected
by the flammable liquid. And
when open flames cause burns,
they are usually second- and
third-degree burns which are
some of the most devastating
injuries that can happen to
someone, said Ernest Grant, a
spokesman for the Jaycee Burn
Center in Chapel Hill.
“It just goes against everything we’re taught from
when we’re young and defies
common sense,” Grant said.
In the past three weeks,
the burn center has treated a
12-year-old and a 14-yearold who burned themselves
severely in the stunt, requiring
extensive surgery and perhaps
leaving them scarred for life,
Grant said.
Several videos have popped
up in recent weeks on Facebook, which is deleting them
as soon as they are reported.
The extent of the trend isn’t
known, but Grant and others
said it can go wrong so easily
that it is dangerous any time it
is tried.
Several cases have been
reported across the country in
the past few weeks, including
a 16-year-old boy in California
who suffered serious burns.
NY law protects the big
cats, bans ‘tiger selfies’
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York’s Internet Romeos will
have to find new ways to attract mates now that it’s illegal to
pose for photos with a tiger, lion or other big cat — a practice
popular on online dating sites but denounced by wildlife advocates as potentially dangerous to both man and beast.
The law signed this week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo prohibits
direct contact between members of the public and big cats at
traveling animal shows and fairs. Animal exhibitors would face
fines for each violation.
So-called tiger selfies have emerged as popular profile photos
on online dating sites, with users — generally young men —
looking to stand out by posting a photo of themselves with the
dangerous predators.
Wildlife advocates say the trend is not only hazardous to
humans but encourages mistreatment of endangered animals.
The big cats are often taken from their mothers as cubs, poorly
cared for and then neglected or discarded when they grow up.
“They breed the cubs, use them for photo-ops, and then
when they can’t use them they breed more,” said Carole Baskin,
founder and CEO of Big Cat Rescue, a Tampa, Florida sanctuary that has more than 100 big cats. “Taking the cub away is a
misery to the cub and the mother, and the cubs aren’t fed properly. They don’t sell tiger milk at the pet store.”
The legislators behind the new law said they hadn’t even
heard of tiger selfies when they crafted the measure and simply
wanted to impose some safeguards on the often unregulated
industry of traveling animal shows.
“I had no idea what a tiger selfie was,” said Assemblywoman
Linda Rosenthal, a Manhattan Democrat. “This is a serious
issue. People who take selfies with wild animals are fooling with
their lives. And it harms the animal because they’re generally
not well-treated. They’re seen as profit-making props.”
Similar laws are already on the books in states including
Mississippi, Arizona and Kansas, where a 17-year-old girl was
killed in 2005 while posing with a tiger for her senior photos.
Baskin said she hopes other states follow suit. She said men
hoping to use tiger selfies to score a date should consider posing
with a domestic feline instead.
“I think women would love that,” she said.
Mother, cousin of
‘The Rock’ injured
in a DUI accident
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in central Florida are
investigating a traffic crash that injured the mother and cousin
of professional wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
According to Clermont police, officers stopped a vehicle
believed to be driven by an impaired driver on Aug. 2.
Police say the driver fled the stop, ran two nearby red lights,
and struck a vehicle driven by a woman identified as Johnson’s
mother. She and a passenger, Johnson’s cousin, were taken to
the hospital with minor injuries.
A police report did not list their names.
Police filed a warrant for DUI and other charges with the state
attorney’s office on the driver of the vehicle that fled the stop.
On his Twitter account, Johnson called the incident completely preventable.
Johnson said his mother, Ata Maivia Johnson, and cousin,
Lina Fanene, were injured in the crash, which he said involved
an alleged drunk driver.
“My first reaction was to find the person who did this and do
unrelenting harm to them. But then you realize the most important thing is that my family lived thru this and we can hug each
other that much tighter these days,” Johnson said in a longer post
Sunday on Facebook.
“Hug your own family that much tighter today and be grateful
you can look them in the eyes and say, ‘I love you.’”
Other members of Johnson’s family said the two women had
attended an event for their family’s charity, the Usos Foundation, that night at Minneola City Hall to raise money for scholarships in the name of The Rock’s grandmother and Ata Johnson’s
mother, Lia Maivia.
The family and other event-goers were travelling to a
local restaurant and witnessed the horrific crash. Afa Anoa’i,
Johnson’s uncle and a WWF champion known as “The Wild
Samoan,” was just a few cars behind.
“You see it happen everyday but when you see it happen to
your family it hits me, it hits me hard,” Afa Anoa’i said.
Anoa’i’s daughter was on the phone with Ata Johnson at the
time and said the call suddenly dropped.
“It was so scary seeing all that debris and the cars were in
such bad shape.”
Both women were taken to South Lake Hospital with serious
injuries. Johnson was later transferred to an Orlando Hospital.
Both are now home recovering.
Fanene has worked as a ring announcer at WWE’s live NXT
shows at Full Sail University, and has trained at WWE’s Performance Center in Orlando.
She posted a photo of herself in a sling.
Family said she suffered a broken collarbone.

Sailing School Vessel arrives for teaching visit

The Sailing School Vessel (SSV) Robert C. Seamans arrived
in the territory this past Monday for a six week stay, and will be
giving college and high school students a chance to experience
classes in nautical and marine science, including marine engineering, oceanography, navigation, marine biology and other subjects related to the ocean and sailing. The Seamans is a 134-foot
steel brigantine and is an oceanographic research/sailing vessel.
Jan Witting, who is the chief scientist aboard the Seamans told
Samoa News college students through their semester at sea program learn about ocean science, the life of the ocean, management, quality and the cultural ties that people living in the islands
have forged with the ocean.
“This is the broad spectrum of things that we are teaching the
college students, but we are looking forward to talking to the high
school students here as well,” he said. He also said that they are
planning to work with the American Samoa Community College
to design a plan to look at water quality around Tutuila on two
different day sails while they are here.
According to their schedule, this coming Saturday August 16
will be an Open House at the dock for the public from 8 a.m. to
12 noon. On Monday August 18, high school students with prior
registration will be going onboard for a short sail where the crew
will be demonstrating some of the marine science navigation
engineering techniques that are taught onboard. “We came here
as part of a voyage that studies the ocean. We have invited some
of the local students onboard and we will be doing some regular
preventive maintenance before going on another long voyage,”
said Captain of the SSV Seamans Pamela Coughlin.
Captain Coughlin noted that the people here are very friendly,
and they are looking forward to the six-week stay here in American Samoa. The Sea Education Association (SEA) crew and students sailed the SSV Seamans from the Phoenix Islands Protected
Area to American Samoa. According to their website, www.sea.
edu, SEA is an educational institution dedicated to exploration,
understanding and stewardship of the oceans as well as the study
of humanity’s relationship with the oceans. SEA offers students
an “interdisciplinary curriculum, on shore and at sea aboard tall
ships,” that provides challenging voyages of scientific discovery,
academic rigor and personal growth.

COURT TO HEAR PLEA
DEAL TODAY ON SEX
CASE FROM MANU’A

will decide on the fate of the plea
deal offered by the government
to Hanipale Malae, facing two
counts of rape, two counts of
sodomy, two counts of deviate
sexual assault, two counts of
sexual abuse first degree, sexual
assault, endangering the welfare
of a child, third degree assault
and furnishing pornographic
material to minors, on allegations that he assaulted three
girls physically and sexually.
The government claims
three girls from Savai’i lived
with Hanipale and his wife in
Manu’a and the incident came
to light when one of the girls ran
away from the defendant’s residence after she was allegedly
assaulted. She was picked up by
Manu’a police officers the next
day and was taken to the hospital
for treatment. While at the hospital, “FS” informed police she
had also been sexually abused
by the defendant along with two
other females who also lived
with him. It’s unclear what kind
of plea agreement the government offered to the defendant,
but the change of plea hearing
is scheduled for today where the
plea agreements will be read in
open court.
One
of
the
victims
Fa’aso’oso’o Sosaiete who initially field a complaint with the
police against the defendant (and
is referred to in that document
as “FS”) is now being charged
with tampering with a witness
and destroying evidence, after
she changed her statement to
the police. Mrs Asenati Malae
(Hanipale’s wife) has also been
charged in connection with this
case, and she’s facing charges
of witness tampering and concealing an offense.
In Asenati’s case, records say
that witnesses and victims were
subsequently taken into the government shelter where alleged
improprieties regarding witness
tampering by Mrs. Malae came
to light. The alleged witness
tampering involves money and
food being given to one of the
witnesses/victim’s mother by
Mrs. Malae, who allegedly also
paid for the mother to come to
American Samoa.
Asenati, according to court
filings, has admitted she “prepared a box of food items”
for Sosaiete’s mother “for her
return trip to Savai’i as well as
a gift in the amount of $500.” As for the charge of concealing an offense, the government claims Asenati admitted
verbally and in a statement that
she “smuggled” a cell phone
into the TCF for her husband.
Sosaiete was implicated when
she contacted the police telling
them she wanted to rewrite her
statement in this case.
COURT DENIES MOTION
TO REDUCE BAIL FOR
LEPUIAI ALLEN MAYER
The Attorney General’s office
is looking at confiscating the five
vehicles, including an aiga bus,
that were allegedly purchased
with the close to $400,000 that
Pacific Shipping Services former
manager Lepuia’i Allen Mayer
allegedly misappropriated while
employed there.
The four vehicles include an
FJ Cruiser, Toyota Tacoma pick
up truck, Sequoia SUV, and an
Echo, along with an aiga bus.
Mayer is charged with embezzlement, forgery and stealing.
During his appearance in District Court Monday, his attorney
Marcellus Talaimalo Uiagalelei
asked the court to reduce bail
from $50,000 to $15,000 or
$20,000, pointing out that he’s
not a flight risk and his family
lives here with their children.
However Assistant Attorney
General Alema Leota recommended to the court that, given
the severity of this specific case,
bail should remain at $50,000.
Ward denied the defense
motion for reduction of bail,
also noting the circumstances of
the case. In the meantime, Allen
will be arraigned in High Court
today, after he waived his rights
to a preliminary examination in
the District Court yesterday.
The hearing is for the court
to determine whether the government has sufficient evidence
to have this case bound over to
the High Court. Full details on

Ferguson seeking
answers after fatal
MO police shooting
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Nights of unrest have vied with
calls for calm in a St. Louis suburb where an unarmed black teenager was killed by police, while the community is still pressing
for answers about the weekend shooting.
Hundreds of residents packed two churches Tuesday evening
for community meetings about the death of 18-year-old Michael
Brown, who was confronted by a Ferguson officer while walking
with a friend in the street near his grandmother’s home.
People also gathered in the streets Tuesday night, shouting
at police. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that police again
fired tear gas into a crowd. One person was injured in a drive-by
shooting, although it was not clear if the shooting was related
to the protests. The Post-Dispatch also reported that a St. Louis
County police officer shot and critically wounded a man who
authorities said pulled a handgun on the officer.
The fatal shooting of Brown has exposed deep racial and economic fault lines in the community. At one church gathering with
dozens of clergy members and elected officials, Missouri Gov.
Jay Nixon urged calm “in the face of crisis.”
“We stand together tonight, reeling from what feels like an old
wound torn open afresh,” Nixon said. “A wound that hadn’t quite
healed right in the first place, and now the pain is just as searing
as when the injury first occurred.”
The other church rally featured the Rev. Al Sharpton, who earlier in the day pressed police to release the name of the police
officer involved — but also pleaded for calm after a night of
looting and vandalism and instances of police using tear gas.
“The local authorities have put themselves in a position —
hiding names and not being transparent — where people will not
trust anything but an objective investigation,” Sharpton said at a
news conference with Brown’s parents.
Ferguson police initially planned to release the name of the
officer, who is on administrative leave, on Tuesday. But they said
death threats to its officers prompted them to withhold it. . Computer hackers have also targeted the city’s website and released
details online about individual city employees.
“If we come out and say, ‘It was this officer,’ then he immediately becomes a target,” Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said.
“We’re taking the threats seriously.”
Police have not disclosed the race of the officer, but witnesses
said he was white. The Ferguson police force has 53 officers,
three of whom are black. Jackson said the city has had trouble
recruiting and retaining black officers. Investigators have released
few details about the deadly encounter, saying only that a scuffle
unfolded after the officer on a routine patrol asked Brown and
another teen to get out of the street on Saturday afternoon. At some
point, the officer’s weapon fired inside a patrol car, according to
the St. Louis County Police Department, which is handling the
investigation at the smaller city’s request.
Several hundred protesters rallied Tuesday morning in the
county seat of Clayton, urging St. Louis County’s prosecutor to
file criminal charges against the Ferguson officer.
Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., said at the news conference to “come together and do this right ... no violence.” President
Barack Obama also urged calm, saying people must comfort each
other “in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.”
Ferguson’s mayor and police chief were among the speakers
at the meeting Nixon attended. Both were welcomed with polite
applause. The forum was intended as an alternative response after
two nights of unrest in which crowds had burned stores, vandalized vehicles, assaulted reporters and taunted officers. Organizers
shared plans for numerous nonviolent responses, such as a prayer
walk planned to mark the one-week anniversary of Brown’s death
and assembling teams of greeters to welcome back students at the
high school from which Brown recently graduated.
The fullest account of Brown’s death so far has come from
Dorian Johnson, who said he was walking home with Brown
when they were approached by an officer in a squad car who
ordered them to move to the sidewalk. Johnson told news crews
that he and Brown kept walking and the officer then reversed his
car “to where it almost hit us.”
The officer, Johnson said, tried to open his door, but it “ricocheted” back. Johnson said the officer reached through the
window, “grabbed my friend around the neck” and tried to pull
him into the car. The officer then reportedly pulled out his weapon
and said, “’I’ll shoot you,’ or ‘I’m going to shoot,’” Johnson said.
When the officer opened fire, Brown was hit, said Johnson,
who hid behind a car. Brown kept running, Johnson said. Johnson
said the officer pursued Brown and fired again. When Brown felt
that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air and started
to get down on the ground. The officer kept firing, Johnson said.
Police have said there is no security or police video of the
confrontation.

Another defense official,
speaking on condition of anonymity to provide additional
details on the sensitive mission, said the extra troops were

ancient mound in northern Greece have uncovered what appears
to be the entrance to an important tomb from about the end of the
reign of warrior-king Alexander the Great, officials said Tuesday.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who visited the tightlyguarded site Tuesday, said the discovery “is clearly extremely
important” and dates between 325-300 B.C.
Alexander, who started from the northern Greek region of
Macedonia to build an empire stretching as far as India, died in
323 B.C. and was buried in Egypt. His fellow royals were traditionally interred in a cemetery near Vergina, far to the west,
where the lavishly-furnished tomb of Alexander’s father, Philip
II, was discovered in the 1970s. But archaeologists believe the
apparently unlooted Amphipolis grave, which is surrounded by a
surprisingly long and well-built wall with courses of marble decorations, may have belonged to a senior ancient official.
Excavator Katerina Peristeri has argued that the mound was
originally topped by a large stone lion that was unearthed a century ago some 5 kilometers from the site. In the past, the lion has
been associated with Laomedon of Mytilene, one of Alexander’s
military commanders who became governor of Syria after the
king’s death. “The excavation will answer the crucial question of
who was buried inside,” Samaras said.
The tomb is expected to be opened in the next two weeks.

a broad path, flanked by masonry walls, which end in a built-up
arch covering two headless, wingless sphinxes — mythical creatures that blend human, bird and lion characteristics.

Ebola survivor
shunned by
boyfriend and
even school
CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — The medical school professors
no longer want Kadiatou Fanta in the classroom. Her boyfriend
has broken up with her. Each day the 26-year-old eats alone and
sleeps alone. Even her own family members are afraid to touch
her months after she survived Ebola.
Long gone are the days when she was vomiting blood and
wracked by fever. And even with a certificate of health declaring
her as having recovered, she says it’s still as though “Ebola survivor” is burned on her flesh.
“Ebola has ruined my life even though I am cured,” she says.
“No one wants to spend a minute in my company for fear of
being contaminated.”
The Ebola virus is only transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of the sick, such as blood, saliva, urine,
sweat or semen. When the first cases emerged in Guinea back
in March, no one had ever confronted such a virulent and gruesome disease in this corner of Africa.
The current outbreak now has killed more than 1,000 people,
according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization. The fatality rate in previous Ebola outbreaks has been up
to 90 percent, though health officials say this time up to half of
victims are surviving.
While there is no specific treatment for Ebola, patients can
be given supportive care such as intravenous fluids to keep them
hydrated. If they can live long enough to develop antibodies to
the virus they can survive, though they could still contract other
strains of Ebola in the future, medical experts say.
Health workers hope that seeing living proof that people can
survive Ebola will encourage fearful communities to get medical care instead of hiding the sick at home where they can infect
relatives.
In Sierra Leone, Sulaiman Kemokai, 20, was released from
an Ebola treatment center on Sunday after spending 25 days
there. He still feels stiffness in his joints but says he is gaining
strength each day.
“When I became sick, I was scared to go to hospital, I hid
from my family, from health workers. After four days I couldn’t
hide anymore, I was too sick. An Ebola ambulance collected me
and took me to the hospital,” he recalls.
But some within his community are reluctant to have any
physical contact with Kemokai. Those released from treatment
centers are no longer contagious, though Ebola can still be
present in men’s semen for up to seven weeks.
Kemokai will have more family support than most: His older
brother and sister also have survived Ebola, while the disease
took their mother’s life.
Fanta, the Guinean medical student, says she was working as
an intern at a clinic in Conakry, the capital, when a patient came
in from the provinces sick with what doctors initially thought
was malaria. She took the man’s vital signs — but as is common
in Guinea — she had no protective gloves or face mask.
About two weeks later, in mid-March, she started having diarrhea and soon was vomiting blood. She says her lasting troubles
began when doctors declared her cured and discharged her from
the isolation ward at the hospital in early April.
Although she no longer had the virus in her bloodstream,
she still was visibly unwell after nearly three weeks in the hospital. Word of her sickness and return spread quickly in the poor
suburb of Tanene where she was staying with extended family.
The boyfriend she used to see every day disappeared when
he heard she had Ebola. Now he won’t take her calls, even
months later.
She tried to re-enroll with her medical school courses at
Gamal Abdel Nasser University. In a sign of just how entrenched
misconceptions are of Ebola, though, even the instructors did
not want her in the classrooms, even though she handed them
her certificate of health.
“I still haven’t taken my exams while my classmates have
moved on to the next level,” she laments. “The professors said
they were going to grade me by telephone.”
Now she’s living off what money her parents can scrape
together to send her from their village, and still dreaming of
when she can resume her courses.
“I want to take care of patients,” she says. “The reason I
am alive today and speaking to you now is because doctors
saved me.”

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) — Although police have now
revealed how Robin Williams committed suicide, the Oscar-winning actor’s fans, friends and even family continue to struggle to
understand why someone who spread so much joy throughout the
world could find so little in his own life that he decided to stop living.
Williams, who made no secret of his decades-long struggles
with depression and substance abuse, killed himself by fashioning a noose out of a belt and hanging himself, authorities said
Tuesday. The frenetic funnyman who starred in such films as
“Mrs. Doubtfire,” ‘’Good Will Hunting” and “Good Morning,
Vietnam,” had announced only last month that he was re-entering
a 12-step program to get his life back on track after months of
nonstop work. His publicist confirmed after he died that he had
been suffering in recent weeks from a serious case of depression.
Still, even family members were caught off-guard when his
body was found in his San Francisco Bay Area home Monday
morning. “I’ll never, ever understand how he could be loved so
deeply and not find it in his heart to stay,” his 25-year-old daughter,
Zelda Williams, said in a poignant statement released Tuesday.
“He was always warm, even in his darkest moments,” she noted,
adding she last saw her father when he recently celebrated his 63rd
birthday. It was a day, Williams recalled, that she and her two
brothers spent “sharing gifts and laughter” with their father.
Marin County Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Boyd said Williams was
last seen alive by his wife, Susan Schneider, who went to bed
around 10 p.m. Sunday. She awoke the next morning and left the
couple’s Tiburon home, thinking he was asleep somewhere else
in the house.
When he didn’t answer a knock on the door a short time later,
his personal assistant found him dead in a bedroom. A pocketknife
was nearby and Williams also had superficial cuts on his wrists.
Boyd said all evidence indicates the actor committed suicide
by hanging himself. A final ruling will be announced after toxicology reports and interviews with witnesses are complete.
The lieutenant declined to say if a suicide note was found.
“We still have people we want to speak with so there is some
information we’re going to withhold,” he said.
Like Williams’ family members, fellow actors and comedians
were devastated by the news.
“I never could have expected this ending to his life and to ours
with him,” said Chevy Chase who noted that he, too, suffers from
depression.
But, Chase added, “I cannot believe this. I am overwhelmed
with grief.”
The circumstances of the death do not help explain what motivated Williams, suicide experts said. Understanding that would
require a detailed “psychological autopsy” that includes the review
of medical and other records, and interviews with family and friends.
These experts stressed that suicide rarely is triggered by a single
factor, such as depression or substance abuse. Typically there are
at least two such influences, often compounded by acute stress,
such as from financial hardship or troubled personal relationships.
“We know from decades of research that there are numerous
factors that contribute to suicide risk,” said Michelle Cornette,
executive director of the American Association of Suicidology.
Word that the actor had killed himself also left neighbors
stunned and grief-stricken in the quiet, waterfront neighborhood
of Tiburon, where Williams was a popular figure.
“I’m shocked. I loved him. I loved his sense of humor. I loved
the spontaneity of his life,” neighbor Johanna Dunning said of
Williams, who was often seen riding his bicycle through the
neighborhood or stopping to joke with kids.
Makeshift memorials of flowers and notes popped up around
the country including on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,
at his home and outside the house in Boulder, Colorado, where
the sitcom “Mork & Mindy” was set.
People also gathered to remember Williams at a bench in
Boston’s Public Garden where he filmed a scene for “Good Will
Hunting,” the film that won him an Academy Award.
Ben Affleck, a co-star and co-writer on that movie, was among
the legions of friends and fans who shared tributes online.
“Robin had a ton of love & did so much for so many. He made
Matt & my dreams come true,” Affleck said of himself and fellow
co-star and co-writer Matt Damon.
“What do you owe a guy who does that?” Affleck asked on
Twitter. “Everything.”
Williams’ family asked that his fans remember him as the
kind-hearted man that he was.
“Yesterday, I lost my father and a best friend and the world got
a little grayer,” his son Zak Williams said in a statement. “I will
carry his heart with me every day. I would ask those that loved
him to remember him by being as gentle, kind, and generous as he
would be. Seek to bring joy to the world as he sought.”

On the night of the flight,
the report says a ground
crewman and his wife met
the pilot and his father at the
airport to support the departure. The crewman asked if
they were going to depart,
and the father replied “yes”,
noting that the “weather was
great.”
“The ground crewman
stated that the wind had been
gusty and strong all day and
evening. He observed the airplane taxi for departure, and
repositioned himself so that
he could observe the whole
runway for the takeoff,” the
report says, adding that as
the plane moved down the
runway, the ground crewman
noted that the “wind was very
strong.”
“The airplane became airborne, but it was moving up
and down and side to side; it
also was not gaining altitude.
At this point, the airplane
had passed the very high frequency omni-directional radio
range, tactical air navigation
(VORTAC), but was still very
low,” it says.
“Before
the
airplane
reached the end of the runway,
it banked to the right towards
the ocean. Over the next few
seconds, the airplane kept getting lower, and then disappeared. He did not observe it
contact the water; he only saw
the [plane’s] lights getting
lower and lower. He observed
no explosion, and heard no
noise,” it says.
The ground crewman is
quoted in the report as saying
that he contacted the airport
duty supervisor to determine
if there had been any contact
with the airplane.
The supervisor responded
that he was waiting for a call
from the pilot after takeoff,
“and the ground crewman
reported that he thought it
went into the ocean.”
Another witness, who was
a couple of miles away sitting
on a seawall facing the airport
reported that the engine was
loud as the airplane was taking
off, the report says, adding
that the witness reported that
it “was unusual that the airplane did not immediately
gain altitude.
He stated that a few seconds after takeoff, the airplane
suddenly went nose down into
the water.”
The report quoted another
pilot—who was very experienced in transoceanic flights
— saying that he had been in
contact with the pilot’s father
for several months during the
planning of the trip, as well as
during the trip.
On the day of departure, the
father indicated that the airplane had 249 gallons of fuel
on board, and anticipated a
11p.m. departure time so that
he and his son could land in
Hawaii during daylight hours,
the report says.
The report also notes a
flight plan had been filed.
The father of the pilot had
purchased two life vests for
them to wear instead of the
gumby suits, according to the
report, which also provides
aviation information on how
the plane was to take off and
how far up the plane would
climb.
NTSB made clear at the
outset of the report, that this
is preliminary information,
subject to change, and may
contain errors.
Any errors in this report
will be corrected when
the final report has been
completed.
Additionally, NTSB investigators may not have traveled
to the site of this investigation, and used data provided
by various sources to prepare
this aircraft accident report.

“We have been told by NMFS to collect letters of those comments and submit them by email, but that does not give residents
equal opportunity to voice their opposition in a town hall setting,
similar to that done in Hawaii,” he said in a phone interview and
noted that the deadline to file comments is Aug. 15 (this Friday).
Ilaoa said the Council has been working closely with the local
Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, talking to people
in the community, encouraging them to write their opposing letters, and they will transmit them via email.

Obama’s proposal would create the world’s largest ocean preserve by expanding the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National
Monument, an ocean preserve that lies between Hawaii and
American Samoa. It encompasses the 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone of seven US Pacific Island Possessions.
“The proposed expansion is opposed by a wide range of
people who believe that the expansion is unnecessary from a
conservation point of view and a grave threat to the American
Samoa economy, because it will make it significantly harder for
the purse seiners who offload in Pago Pago to operate here,”
wrote Chamber of Commerce chairman Lewis Wolman in an
email to Chamber members, adding that the Chamber board will
be issuing a statement of opposition very soon.
Tri Marine International vice president of production Dan Sullivan told Samoa News, “The US built, US flagged purse seiners
that are based in American Samoa fish in some of those areas”
included in Obama’s proposal. “Closing them will therefore have
an effect on their fishing operations. They will have to fish elsewhere. If fishing elsewhere reduces their catch, their deliveries to
the canneries in American Samoa will be reduced,” he said.
The Council, during a June meeting in Honolulu, discussed the
President’s proposal and issued an official document outlining
its concerns. It says that the proposal “would provide no added
conservation benefit to marine resources, but will economically
harm the area’s fishermen and those reliant on Pacific marine

FONO LEADERS ASK FOR REPORTS
BEFORE BUDGET HEARINGS BEGIN
The Directors or Chief Executive Officers of the Enterprise
Funds and Authorities have been asked to provide their profit
and loss statements five days in advance of their scheduled
budget hearings because “it is critical in the review process of
your financial plan for fiscal year 2015,” according to a letter
sent to Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga from Fono leaders.
The letter further says that each department and agency must
provide a current copy of their revised organizational charts that
corresponds with the FY2015 manpower resources figures three
days in advance of the scheduled hearings, which are slated to
start next week Monday. The letter from Fono leaders also told
the Governor that Directors are expected at the budget hearings
and they must dress appropriately.

five years under the condition that he pays a fine of $5,000 and
remains a law-abiding citizen.
The charges were filed in this case after a raid of the prison
by police uncovered numerous contraband items including
beer bottles, a flat screen TV, screwdrivers, tools, fans, and cell
phones — all of which were seized by CID detectives.

4 teens plead not guilty
to killing USC student
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Four teenagers pleaded not guilty
Tuesday to murder charges in the fatal beating of a Chinese graduate student at the University of Southern California.
According to prosecutors, Jonathan Del Carmen, 19, and
Andrew Garcia, 18, Alberto Ochoa, 17, and Alejandra Guerrero,
16, fatally attacked USC engineering student Xinran Ji at around
1 a.m. on July 24, 2014. They entered their pleas at a downtown
Los Angeles courtroom, Los Angeles County District Attorney
spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said. Xi, 24, was beaten with a
baseball bat and a wrench as he walked to his apartment near the
university campus. He made it back to his apartment, leaving a
trail of blood, and a roommate discovered his body hours later.
Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death
penalty against Del Carmen and Garcia, Ardalani said. The other
two defendants are not eligible for the death penalty because they
are under the age of 18. Garcia and the two younger teens were
also charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. All
four are due back in court on Sept. 12.
The fatal beating of Ji reverberated through the university community, particularly among students from China. In 2012, two
USC students from China were fatally shot during an off-campus
robbery also during the early morning hours. In response to Ji’s
death, USC announced last Friday enhanced security measures,
including increased year-round security patrols both on- and offcampus. This fall, the university will also require international
graduate students to complete safety education programs.

Chikungunya Vectors
Dengue and chikungunya are spread only by certain species of mosquitoes; in American Samoa the most important vectors are Aedes aegypti and Aedes polynesiensis
These mosquitoes bite mostly during the daytime, in the morning or late afternoon. On cloudy, calm days they may bite all day.
They come from larvae (tugatuga) that develop mostly in water-holding containers
These mosquitoes do not usually fly very far from where they develop as larvae

an angle so water cannot collect

• Cut/remove tall grass/weeds near house, school, place

• Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, shoes and socks
• Use mosquito net when sleeping—even in daytime;
especially children, infants
• Use aerosol insecticide for mosquitoes indoors; follow
label carefully
• Use larvicide or 10 tbsp/gal liquid hand dishwashing
detergent to spray surface of water in containers that
cannot be emptied or dealt with in other ways. (Do not
spray water used for humans, animals, or plants)

Haitian police recapture
kidnapper who escaped prison
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Police recaptured an
alleged kidnapper who escaped custody during a mass breakout
that authorities believe was staged for him at a prison outside the
Haitian capital, officials said Tuesday.
Clifford Brandt was taken into custody in the Haitian town of
Cornillon, near the border with the Dominican Republic, Communications Minister Rudy Heriveaux said. Brandt, the son of
a prominent Haitian businessman, was in a vehicle with several other prisoners involved in the breakout, said Ed Lozama,
a spokesman Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. “They tried to
escape but were quickly apprehended,” Lozama said.
On Sunday, gunmen stormed a prison in Croix-des-Bouquets
on the outskirts of the capital and wounded two guards in an
attack that authorities believe was intended to free Brandt. In the
ensuing chaos, police said 329 prisoners escaped.
Police have fanned out across the country in search of the
escaped prisoners and appealed for help from the neighboring
Dominican Republic as well as nearby Jamaica, fearing some
may have fled abroad. “The government will not rest until every
single one is in custody,” the prime minister said.
Brandt, who owns a car dealership and whose family has
extensive business holdings in this Caribbean country, had been
in custody since October 2012. He was awaiting trial on charges
stemmed from the kidnapping of the adult children of another
Haitian businessman.

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama
says that while the shooting death of a Missouri teenager has
prompted “strong passions,” people should remember Michael
Brown through “reflection and understanding.”
Obama’s comments came in a written statement about
18-year-old Brown. The unarmed teen was fatally shot by a
police officer Saturday while walking on a street near his suburban St. Louis home.
Witnesses have said the officer was white and Brown was
black. The shooting has prompted violent protests in Brown’s
community.
Obama says he and wife Michelle send their deepest condolences to Brown’s family and community.
He says the Justice Department is continuing to investigate
the situation along with local officials.
The president also called on people to comfort each other “in
a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.”
New Jersey’s gov. Christie
takes Ice Bucket Challenge
NEW YORK (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is
proving again he doesn’t mind a little humiliation. The Republican on Tuesday posted on his Facebook page a video showing
two of his kids dumping a bucket of ice water on his head.
The video is part of the Ice Bucket Challenge, launched by the
ALS Foundation to raise money for fighting ALS, also known as
Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Christie nominates three other people to complete the challenge within 24 hours or donate $100: Democratic New Jersey
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg
and late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon.
Christie has been trying to move past a scandal at home by
drawing laughs, including an appearance on Fallon’s show.
The ALS Foundation reports raising $4 million since July 29
thanks to the Ice Bucket Challenge.
Shots fired at New Jersey
police station overnight
WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. (AP) — An early morning driveby shooting left the outside of a southern New Jersey police station riddled with bullets, but no officers were injured, authorities
said Tuesday.
Police in West Deptford, near Philadelphia, said a dark-colored sedan drove through the parking lot just after 4 a.m., and
someone fired seven rounds toward the building, which houses
the police department and other municipal offices.
Six bullets hit the outside of the building and the seventh
went through the window of the deputy chief’s office, Lt. Stephen Meduri told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Four officers were working at the time, but only the supervisor
was in the station when the shots were fired.
Deputy Chief Sean McKenna said at a news conference
Tuesday that the department had not received threats, but “they
were clearly out to hurt one of our officers.”
Police have video of the suspect’s vehicle, but not of the
shooting. Authorities are trying to enhance the video to gather
license plate and vehicle information. Meduri said it’s unclear
how many people were in the car. He described the bullets as
“large-caliber,” without elaborating.

Obama administration eases
part of lobbying rule
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is
easing a key part of its rule restricting lobbyists from serving
in government. The move comes after a judge ruled against the
administration in a court case filed by several lobbyists.
Under the rule change, registered lobbyists will now be allowed
to service on federal advisory committees if they are representing
an entity, recognizable group of people or state and local governments. They cannot serve only to represent their individual interests. Obama included the original restriction in an ethics package
seeking to restrict lobbyists influence on government.
Family: Missouri shooting
victim had eerie dream
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Relatives of a Missouri teenager
who was fatally shot by a policeman say he had an eerie dream
shortly before his death.
Pastor Charles Ewing said Tuesday that his nephew Michael
Brown Jr. had confessed Jesus as his savior a couple of weeks
before Saturday’s shooting. Ewing said Brown then had a dream
in which he saw a body covered by a sheet and told his family he
believed the world would one day know his name. Ewing said
the public attention surrounding Brown’s shooting has fulfilled
that dream in a way his nephew couldn’t have expected.
Relatives have described Brown as gentle despite his large
size. Cousin Eric Davis said Brown quit his high school football
team before playing a game because didn’t want to hurt anyone.
Fox’s Smith expresses regret
over robin Williams comment
NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News’ Shepard Smith says he
regrets using the word coward while speculating on air what
Robin Williams may have been feeling before his suicide.
Smith made the comment Monday night during coverage of
the Academy Award-winning actor’s death.
“I have no way of knowing the depths of Mr. Williams’ suffering but I never meant to suggest that he acted in any such
manner,” Smith said in a statement. “He was a one-of-a-kind
American treasure and I regret using any word during the hourlong special, reflecting on his extraordinary career, that would
appear I disparaged him in any way.” Smith was speaking about
how Williams’ death might impact his three adult children.
Critics took to social media after Smith said Williams’ children were giving him so much joy, “and yet something inside
you is so horrible or you’re such a coward or whatever the
reason that you decide you have to end it.”
Officials say the 63-year-old Williams hanged himself at his
home in the San Francisco Bay area.
Utah nude sunbather to
fight lewdness charges
FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A 76-year-old man who
police say was sunbathing nude in his backyard next to a church
parking lot in Utah has pleaded not guilty to lewdness charges.
The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports that Myron Lee
Kipp was in a Farmington, Utah, court Tuesday. Kipp pleaded
not guilty to four counts of lewdness involving a child and three
counts of lewdness.
Court documents show a police officer called to Kipp’s house
by neighbors on March 5 could see the man from the church
parking lot. The backyard fence is chain link with no privacy
slats. When confronted, a completely nude Kipp told the officer
it was his property and he could do what he wanted.
Several parents said they and their children could see the man
from the parking lot.
Gunman kills police reporter in Mexico
VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) — A Mexican newspaper says
a gunman killed its police beat reporter outside his home in
southern Oaxaca state.
The newspaper Buen Tono published a story Tuesday on its
website saying reporter Octavio Rojas was shot to death in the
town of Cosolapa, where he lived. Relatives told the newspaper
Rojas was shot by a man who entered his home asking to see a
car the 35-year-old reporter was selling. The newspaper is based
in the city of Cordoba in Veracruz state. It says Rojas covered
police stories and the area along the Veracruz-Oaxaca state line.
Rojas was also the spokesman for Cosolapa’s city council.
The press freedom group Article 19 says the newspaper has
been threatened several times since 2011, including having its
offices set on fire by gunmen.
Suspect dead after
officer-involved shooting
SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (AP) — Officials say an unidentified male suspect is dead and two other people are injured following an officer-involved shooting in San Fernando.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday in the small
town in the northeast corner of the San Fernando Valley.
Officials say two additional unidentified people suffered
minor injuries. They were taken to a local hospital.
Further details on their identities or the nature of their injuries
were not immediately available.
The
shooting,
which
occurred about 3:30 p.m.,
caused the brief lockdown of a
nearby elementary school. LA
County homicide detectives are
assisting San Fernando police
officers with the investigation.
Quake rattles
Ecuador’s capital;
2 deaths reported
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) —
A magnitude-5.1 earthquake
shook Ecuador’s capital and
surrounding areas Tuesday,
causing tall buildings to sway
and sending some people
rushing into the streets. The
government said two people
were confirmed dead and eight
injured outside Quito.
The Department of Risk
Management said the casualties were in the Catequilla area
7 miles (12 kilometers) north
of the capital near the country’s monument marking the
Equator. It did not say how the
deaths and injuries occurred.
The U.S. Geological Survey
said the quake was centered 14
miles (23 kilometers) northeast
of Quito at a depth of 4 miles
(7 kilometers). There were no
reports of widespread damage,
but officials said some roads
were blocked by small landslides. Authorities halted operations at the capital Tababela
airport as a precaution because
of a thick layer of dust thrown
up into the sky around Quito.
Best-of-summer
meteor shower
eclipsed by moon
WASHINGTON (AP) —
The annual best-of-summer
meteor shower peaks late
Tuesday and into the wee hours
Wednesday morning. But don’t
expect to be too wowed.
NASA meteor expert Bill
Cooke said the bigger, brighter
supermoon will interfere with
viewing the Perseids (purSEE-uhds), but it should still
be fun, weather permitting. It
peaks after 2:30 a.m.
Cooke said instead of seeing
as many 100 fireballs per hour,
expect to see about 30. Instead
of just lying on the ground and
looking up, observers will need
to gaze away from the moon.
The meteor show is debris of
the Comet Swift-Tuttle. Cooke
said asking people to watch
the meteor shower is a favorite
pickup line of astronomy nerds.
He said it can be seen online
but is not as good.
a Steer kills an
Austrian farmer
VIENNA (AP) — Police
say a steer killed a farmer
while he was working in its
stall, in the latest of several
deaths or injuries over the past
few weeks caused by Austrian
cattle. A police statement says
the 49-year old victim was
crushed to death Tuesday.
A worker on the farm in
western Austria heard screams
but arrived to find the man
already dead.
The victim was not identified, in accordance with Austrian confidentiality rules.
He was killed a little more
than two weeks after a herd
of cows attacked and killed a
German woman hiking through
their pasture in Tyrol province.
Police said the animals were
apparently riled by the sight of
her leashed dog.
At least two other people
have been injured in Austria by
cattle since that incident.
Magnitude 5.8 quake
strikes Mexico’s
Oaxaca state
NEW YORK (AP) — The
U.S. Geological Survey says a
magnitude 5.8 earthquake has
struck the southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca.
The U.S.G.S. said the quake
struck early Wednesday with
its epicenter 10 miles (16
kilometers) west of Santiago
Pinotepa near the Pacific Coast.
It had a depth of 6.2 miles (10
kilometers).
There were no immediate
reports of injuries.
A magnitude 5.8 quake can
cause considerable damage.
Hoax report: Mountain lion escaped
from pet store
AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — Officers in South Carolina spent
hours searching for a mountain lion on the loose from a
pet store — but police now say
the threat was based on a false
report.
Police say 55-year-old Bill
Lunsford reported the escaped
animal about 1 a.m. Sunday in
Aiken. He said a burglar broke
into a pet store and let the
animal loose.
Police warned residents that
the domesticated, declawed
mountain lion was 3 feet tall
and 100 pounds, wearing a dog
harness.
Aiken Police told WRDWTV that about a dozen officers
looked for the cat for up to 18
hours.
But police now say the
report was a hoax and a mountain lion was never at the store.
Lunsford is charged with filing
a false police report.
It wasn’t known whether he
has a lawyer.
Memorial service
set for boy stabbed
at playground
CALEDONIA
TOWNSHISP, Mich. (AP) — A
memorial service is planned
for a 9-year-old boy who was
fatally stabbed at a western
Michigan playground.
The service is Wednesday
at Cornerstone Church in Kent
County’s Caledonia Township.
A 12-year-old boy is accused
of repeatedly stabbing Michael
Connor Verkerke on Aug. 4 in
Kentwood, near Grand Rapids.
Police say the young victim
ran home and collapsed on the
porch after the stabbing and
died at a hospital.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jimmy Fallon paid to Robin Williams
on the “Tonight Show,” where the late comic made many memorable, seldom-seated appearances.
His voice cracking, Fallon called Williams “the Muhammad
Ali of comedy” on Tuesday and stood atop his desk to declare,
“O Captain, my captain, you will be missed.” Fallon performed
a brief impression of Williams’ fast-talking, riffing delivery, but
mostly let a clip from Williams’ first appearance on the “Tonight
Show” in 1981 speak for itself.
To the delight of host Johnny Carson, Williams jumped into

Sept. 11 war crimes judge
ponders way forward
FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — A war-crimes judge at Guantanamo Bay is pondering the way forward for five detainees
accused in the Sept. 11 attacks after ordering a separate trial for
one of them.
The tribunal reconvenes Wednesday afternoon at the U.S.
naval base in Cuba for more proceedings involving Ramzi
Binalshibh (RAM’-zee bin-al-SHEEB’).
Army Col. James Pohl severed Binalshibh’s case from those
of four co-defendants last month amid concerns that issues,
including questions about his mental health, would unduly delay
progress on the larger case.
Prosecutors have asked Pohl to reconsider his severance
order. They say the issues peculiar to Binalshibh can be resolved
in a timely fashion without trying him separately.
The hearing is being shown on closed-circuit video at Fort
Meade, near Baltimore.

Star-Spangled Spectacular
BALTIMORE (AP) — Tall ships, a Blue Angels air show
and musical performances will be among the highlights of a
weeklong celebration of the 200th anniversary of writing of the
Star-Spangled Banner.
Star-Spangled Spectacular will begin in Baltimore on Sept.
10. Festivities will include stage performances, fireworks, tours
of naval ships and tall ships in the harbor, a Blue Angels air show
and performances by Smokey Robinson, Kristen Chenoweth and
Gov. Martin O’Malley’s Irish rock band, O’Malley’s March.
The celebration will commemorate the writing of America’s
national anthem. After watching American troops withstand a
25-hour land and sea attack to maintain control over Baltimore
in September 1814, lawyer Francis Scott Key penned the lyrics.

2 die after being smuggled
from Mexico in trunk
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say two Mexican men have
been found dead inside a trunk at a San Diego border crossing,
in what authorities believe was a smuggling attempt.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection say the 28- and 20-yearold men appeared to be unconscious and not breathing when
inspectors opened the trunk of a 2012 Dodge Challenger
Tuesday afternoon at the San Ysidro port of entry. The agency
said the men were pronounced dead at nearby hospitals.
Hundreds of migrants perish each year after entering the
country illegally to trek through Arizona deserts and Texas
ranches. However, it is extremely rare for someone to die being
smuggled inside a vehicle.
The driver — a 41-year-old, U.S. citizen who was not named
— was taken into custody.
Commonwealth Bank posts
$8 billion annual profit
SYDNEY (AP) — Commonwealth Bank of Australia, one
of the nation’s largest lenders, has posted a 13 percent increase
in annual profit to 8.6 billion Australian dollars ($ 8 billion) on
Wednesday and expressed cautious optimism for the current
fiscal year.
The 102-year-old bank reported gains in all its core divisions
through the year ending June 30, 2014, with customer deposits
up AU$34 billion to AU$439 billion and accounting for 64 percent of the bank’s total funding.
The bank’s chief executive officer Ian Narev described the
2014 fiscal year as “a period of relative stability in the global
economy, although downside risks remain.”
“We are cautiously positive about the outlook for the 2015
financial year,” Narev said in a statement.
“If the stability in global markets continues, gradual increases
in consumer spending and demand for credit from businesses
over the next year are likely,” he added.

Australia won’t rule out
sending troops to Iraq
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s prime minister
says he’s holding open the possibility of sending a combat force
to Iraq in addition to military transport aircraft to airlift humanitarian aid to refugees trapped by insurgents in northern mountains. Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters in London after
meeting with British officials on the Iraq crisis on Tuesday that
his government wouldn’t rule out taking military action in Iraq.
The suggestion that Australian combat troops could return
to Iraq was widely attacked Wednesday by the government’s
political opponents. But Defense Minister David Johnston
played down the prospect of an Australian combat force, saying
the military had only committed to sending two unarmed C-130
Hercules transport planes for humanitarian aid air drops to begin
within two or three days.
Ohio animal park worker
killed in horse cart crash
BERLIN, Ohio (AP) — A horse-drawn wagon has run over
an animal park worker in Ohio’s Amish country and crashed,
killing the worker and injuring nine passengers.
The Holmes County sheriff’s office says deputies were called
to Rolling Ridge Ranch Animal Park in Berlin on Tuesday
morning. It says Apple Creek resident Orley Miller was operating the wagon and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say Miller stopped the wagon to let passengers
feed nearby wildlife. They say Miller was leaning on the wagon’s safety rail, which broke and caused him to fall backward.
The spooked horses then took off, and the wagon ran over him
and struck a tree. The sheriff’s office says the passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries and no horses were injured.

BOSTON (AP) — A bench in Boston has become a quiet
memorial to Robin Williams, whose Academy Award-winning
performance in “Good Will Hunting” was filmed in the city.
In the 1997 movie, Williams, playing an empathetic therapist, and his patient, a blue-collar genius played by Matt Damon,
have a conversation on a bench in Boston’s Public Garden.
Dozens of people quietly visited it Tuesday. Some left tributes — pinwheels, flowers, bottles of beer, a teddy bear, an
autographed baseball. Some used chalk to write messages on the
walkway. Many were quotes from his performances: “It’s not
your fault,” from “Good Will Hunting,” and, “You ain’t never
had a friend like me,” from “Aladdin.”
Williams died Monday at his California home at age 63.
Authorities say he hanged himself.
Rights groups: flotilla
to break Gaza blockade
ISTANBUL (AP) — A group of human rights organizations
said Tuesday they are organizing a flotilla of vessels that will
attempt to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza later this year.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said it plans to sail to Gaza
“during 2014.” It did not specify how many vessels would participate, but said the flotilla was “a reflection of the growing
worldwide solidarity with the Palestinian people; from the U.S.
to Malaysia, from Scandinavia to South Africa.”
The group said the boats would also be carrying “Palestinian
commercial products purchased by buyers worldwide to complete the work of Gaza’s Ark,” a cargo boat built by the FFC and
Palestinians that the group said was bombed on July 11.
It said it will also organize demonstrations in ports worldwide in coming months.
“Along with other projects, the initiative will support the
right of Palestinians to operate international marine lines in and
out of the port of Gaza,” the group said.
The group organized two previous flotillas, in 2010 and in
2011. During the first, Israeli forces stormed the Turkish ship
Mavi Marmara, killing nine people on board. The incident led to
a breakdown in Turkish-Israeli relations.
US budget deficit running
24.2 percent below 2013
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government ran a lower
deficit this July than a year ago, keeping it on course to record the
lowest deficit in six years. The July deficit was $94.6 billion, an
improvement of 3.1 percent from a year ago, the Treasury Department reported Tuesday in its monthly budget statement. For the
first 10 months of this budget year, the deficit totals $460.5 billion, down 24.2 percent from the same period a year ago.
The Congressional Budget Office expects this year’s deficit
to total around $500 billion, down from $680.2 billion last year.
That would be the lowest deficit since an imbalance of $458.6
billion in 2008, which was a record at the time. The Great Recession and efforts to deal with the financial crisis sent deficits
above $1 trillion for four straight years.
The July imbalance followed a $70.5 billion surplus in June,
a month when government coffers are swelled by quarterly tax
payments. But without the quarterly payments, the government
ran a deficit in July, a month when it has recorded deficits in 58
of the last 60 years.

Pilots strike in Argentina,
stranding many thousands
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina’s government stepped in to halt a brief pilot’s strike that stranded thousands of passengers Tuesday in the country’s capital.
More than 30 international and local flights by state-run
Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral were cancelled or delayed,
including routes to cities such as Miami, Caracas and Bogota.
The Labor Ministry then ordered the two sides to accept
mediation, and union leaders said operations would soon be
back to normal.
The secretary-general off the Association of Air Line Pilots,
Pablo Biro, said the pilots were seeking a 35 percent pay raise to

UN chief urges world to
help in Ebola outbreak
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon is pressing the international community to urgently
respond to a shortage of doctors, nurses and equipment to stem
the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Ban said at a news conference Tuesday that a coordinated
global response is essential.
Ban announced that he has appointed U.N. public health
expert David Nabarro to coordinate the world body’s effort to
fight Ebola after consulting with U.N. health chief Margaret
Chan.
Nabarro has led earlier U.N. efforts to combat infectious diseases, including SARS.
“We need to avoid panic and fear,” Ban said. “Ebola can be
prevented.”
The WHO says more than 1,000 people have died in the Ebola
outbreak in West Africa. The virus was detected in Guinea in
March and has hit Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.
New ID-check system for
military installations
WASHINGTON (AP) — Military installations have a new
system for checking the credentials of people trying to gain
access.
Department of Defense spokeswoman Lt. Col. Valerie Henderson said in a statement that the system, called the Identity
Matching Engine for Security and Analysis, became functional
Friday.
The system matches people affiliated with the Department
of Defense against an FBI database for active arrest warrants. It
also alerts if a person is using a lost or stolen credential or one
that is no longer valid.
Moving quickly to implement the system was one of four key
recommendations made by the Secretary of Defense following
last year’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. The shooter
had a valid credential to gain entry.
Henderson says she couldn’t say how many installations are
using the system.
Prosecutor: Musician’s
$500,000 prize money stolen
NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities have arrested a suburban
New York man on charges he stole nearly $500,000 in prize
money belonging to famed jazz musician Cecil Taylor.
Brooklyn prosecutors say Noel Muir was facing a court
appearance Tuesday.
The Uniondale man is charged with second-degree grand larceny. The name of his attorney was not immediately known.
Prosecutors say Muir is a general contractor who befriended
the noted pianist while repairing a home next to Taylor’s
Brooklyn residence.
In 2013, the 85-year-old Taylor was named a recipient of the
Inamori Foundation’s Kyoto Prize. Muir allegedly accompanied
Taylor to Japan to accept the award and had the money sent to
his bank account instead of Taylor’s.
The award is given annually for achievement in science,
technology, and arts and philosophy.
Long Beach men found guilty of pimping
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A jury has found two Long
Beach men guilty of human trafficking and pimping two women
and a teenager over several months.
The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported Monday that
23-year-old Stacey Winn was convicted of several counts
including pimping, human trafficking, sodomy by use of force,
rape and kidnapping.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office says
Winn’s co-defendant, Eric James Avery, was convicted of two
felony counts: pimping a minor 16 years of age or older and
human trafficking of a minor for a sex act.
Jurors also found true allegations that the 25-year-old Avery
was a member of the Long Beach Baby Insane Crip gang.
One of the victims was a 16-year-old girl who said she had
been working as a prostitute for Avery.
Each man faces more than 30 years in prison.
Holmes lawyers renew bid
to ID source of news leak
DENVER (AP) — Attorneys for Colorado theater shooting
defendant James Holmes renewed their attempt to find out
who leaked information about a “critical piece of evidence” to
a reporter, or to weaken prosecutors’ case if the source can’t
be identified. In a motion filed last week and released Monday,
defense lawyers said the jury pool was tainted and Holmes’ right
to a fair trial was violated by a news story that said days before
the shooting, Holmes sent his psychiatrist a notebook containing
violent drawings.
The defense is asking Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos
A. Samour Jr. to do one of three things: bar trial testimony from
all 14 officers who handled the notebook but denied being the
reporter’s source; block prosecutors from seeking the death penalty; or appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the leak.
The story, by Fox News Channel reporter Jana Winter,
cited unnamed law officers. Holmes’ lawyers argue that whoever it was violated a gag order and likely committed perjury
by denying it when questioned later under oath, undermining
their credibility as trial witnesses. Holmes, now 26, is accused of
fatally shooting 12 people and injuring 70 in the July 20, 2012,
attack on a suburban Denver theater. He pleaded not guilty by
reason of insanity, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. His trial is scheduled to start Dec. 8.
NYC official calls for police body cameras
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City official is calling for
body cameras on police officers as a check on misconduct, citing
last month’s death of a man who was put in a police chokehold.
Public Advocate Letitia James on Monday called for a pilot
program to put body-worn cameras on patrol officers in 15 percent of the city’s precincts, with the eventual goal of outfitting all
patrol with the cameras. “We are living in an increasingly technological world, and we should take measures to incorporate video
cameras into policing to improve public safety,” James said.
Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin ordered some patrol officers
to wear the cameras in a pilot program in her 2013 stop-and-frisk
ruling. A police spokeswoman said Monday that the department
is exploring the feasibility of camera technology.
Indian prime minister claims
Pakistan is waging ‘proxy war’
SRINAGAR, India (AP) — India’s prime minister on
Tuesday accused Pakistan of waging a proxy, terrorist war
because it was too weak to fight a conventional one, a day after
India accused its traditional rival of violating cease-fire agreements in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to provide Indian
troops with more weapons, saying they were suffering more
casualties from “terrorism than from war.”
“Pakistan has lost the strength to fight a conventional war, but
continues to engage in the proxy war of terrorism,” Modi said
in an address to Indian army soldiers and officers in the city of
Leh. He also announced that a national war memorial would be
installed in the region.
The pugnacious comments appeared to mark a reversal from
friendlier tones struck in the days after Modi and his Hindunationalist party won Indian elections in a landslide in May.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was among regional
leaders who attended Modi’s inauguration.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican is urging Muslim
leaders to denounce the “barbarity” of the Islamic State’s attacks
against Christians and other minorities in Iraq, saying their credibility is on the line. The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, the main Vatican office that deals with the
Muslim world, said Tuesday that the forced expulsions and massacres of Christians and minority Yazidis shamed humanity and
couldn’t be justified by any religion.
The office said the “unspeakable criminal acts” — the
beheading, crucifying and hanging of bodies in public places,
the “barbaric practice of infibulation,” the abduction of women
and girls as spoils of war, and the destruction of Christian religious symbols — required a “clear and courageous stance on the
part of religious leaders, especially Muslims.”
Unpaid O.J. Simpson civil
judgment to be auctioned
NEW YORK (AP) — After waiting 17 years for O.J.
Simpson to pay a $9 million wrongful death judgment, Ronald
Goldman’s mother is selling her right to the cash online.
Sharon Rufo listed the judgment Tuesday on JudgmentMarketplace.com. Bidding continues for 30 days, but it can be
bought right away for $1 million. Website founder Shawn Porat
says Simpson’s judgment is worth $24.7 million after interest is
factored in. That’s only if Simpson pays.
The winning bidder takes on the risk of collecting from the
financially strapped ex-football star. He’s been in a Nevada
prison since 2008 on a robbery and kidnapping conviction.
Simpson has paid little of the $33.5 million he owes from the
1997 civil case. A jury acquitted him in 1995 of killing Goldman
and ex-wife Nicole Brown.
